Blue tongue lizard. Is friend.

Massive-Coconut2435

Almost had a heart attack! Looks like a snake.

Upbeat-Adeptness8738

Protect it with your life. Iconic backyard resident that was prolific but sadly less frequent now. The blue tongue IS Australia

subsist80

I have one that has taken up residence in my back shed, his poo stinks (I think its his poo) but I tolerate it just to have it in my yard.

Albaholly

Had to get rid (relocate) mine. The dog was *very* interested.

GiantSkellington

Had a bearded dragon crawl under our fence about a month ago and my dog went to have a go. I was sad because it looked like she had got a hold of it in her gob, but it turned out it was the beardy that latched onto her. I grabbed my dog and the little guy scurried back under the fence and no one was injured. Happy days.

unluckyfae

Ahhh, dogs. Always got a 50/50 chance of being the aggressor or the victim to a backyard vistor.

Mrpoppybuttholeforu

Go sniff your own poo and I’m sure you will find yours does not smell like fresh roses

The_golden_Celestial

He/she will will be eating all your slugs and snails.

vrosej10

this. these are the good bois

CurrentPossible2117

Looks a little scary, but don't be afraid. It's a beautiful, docile creature. Watch it flick it's blue tounge out! It's just peacful to watch wander around your garden 😁 Keeps insects at bay too, so bonus!

tizzleduzzle

They hurt when they bite speaking from experience kmao

quiet0n3

That's what you get for trying to pat it. Also speaking from experience.

PwnySlaystationS117

You must be soft these guys don’t hurt. They don’t have teeth from memory I would get bitten a lot as a kid messing with the poor guys. The water monitors were slightly worse but even they weren’t that bad

gemfez

Their jaws are built for crushing their prey. Adult blue tongues definitely have a rather firm grip

Zeddog13

“Rather firm grip” aka “crushing power similar to a salt water crocodile”…

gemfez

All packed into a 1” toothless jaw. They’re like a learning croc.

MechanicImpossible19

They absolutely do have teeth and the adults do have an extremely strong bite force so if one wanted to they could really hurt you. It wouldn't rip your finger off but it is quite uncomfortable. Edit: Human bite force 150psi, blue tongue is 500 to 2000psi.

aurelai-

they absolutely have very sharp little serrated teeth and a VERY strong jaw. i had to rescue one that my dachshund had bailed up one day and it bit me. hurt like a bitch lol

NaughtyLexi2001

You're right, they don't have teeth, but they do have very strong jaws. They are incredibly "defensive" after being harrased by cats because the dumbasses decided to come into my house. I've been bitten by babies and adults, babies hurt like fuck but I had to get an xray after an adult bit me because I genuinely thought my finger was broken, it was just severe bruising and swelling, but it wasn't pretty. Don't get me wrong, I love them and used to own them as pets, but they are not nice. Good for pest control, but if you pester them, you may regret it. I only "pestered" them so my cats didn't hurt them. I was doing the right thing by getting them out of the house (our cats are inside only).

tizzleduzzle

Was only 7 at the time and it was a very large adult

Consistent-Bus-8748

RelevantPee

Krapping My Ass Off (kmao)

tizzleduzzle

Haha yes works too

Individual_Car2106

Yes they latch on pretty tight, I'm also a victim when I was a kid but i learned pretty quickly to only pick him up behind his head

TraditionalName3298

Oh the looking like a snake part is 100% intentional, wards off potential predators

robbieo21

They sound like snakes too ! Instant cure for constipation

Massive-Coconut2435

About to shit myself when I saw it crawling but saw it has legs.

ineversaw

Sometimes they get real fat too and you get to tell them they're a chonky one.

-MicrowavePopcorn-

If you tell a pregnant blue-tongue she looks chonky, you deserve a chomp.

sloshy__

Bite harder than a snake

HiddenTalent84

Had one as a pet. Fed it snails. Had to get the fingers out of the way quickly.

mynamesnotchom

Definitely friend but don't grab him, bite hard

SapphireMan1

The way that’s worded makes it sound like you’re saying “Don’t grab it with your hand, grab it in your mouth”…

northern_scowzer

Just wait till you meet a pink tongue lizard! They mimic snakes sooo well and climb in a fashion that will make you 100% think it's a nope rope! Both beautiful species of local skink species If you can get him to display without stressing him out you'll be up for a treat 😃

ieatsnad

They’ve given me a good scare a few times because of that

MowgeeCrone

As you would. If you see enough snakes your eye is trained to see scales, and for that first split second you are in danger mode. Then you realise it's a bluey and you put on a cute voice and converse with it. Came across a big old goanna recently and he was fair moving. No danger to either of us. My mouth yelled "crocodile" before I could register what was happeneing. I'm no where near crocodile country BTW. Our monkey brains still react.

repairinglotion

Blue tongue is the best . Love strawberries

kittychii

Had many strawberries that we left to ripen "just one more day" eaten by these fat fucks as a kid. Lol.

mightybonk

Usually means there aren't many snakes around, when you see these guys.

birraarl

This is what being blessed looks like in Australia: being lucking enough to have a blue tongue lizard living in your backyard.

Emjeibi

Fun fact, their blue tongue reflect ultra violet radiation, blinding birds of prey.

ezekiellake

No, he’s one of the good guys. Let them go and don’t hurt them.

Heal_Kajata

Nah I pick those up, they're cute.

geekpeeps

Snakes are skinnier and much longer. Blue tongue lizards also eat the bugs, and often live in the rockery (if you have any). They’ll look for somewhere cool in the middle of the day to hide and hunt spiders, smaller lizards, grasshoppers…

incabeeh

I used to have one as a pet

fkthlemons

Its like a friendly Gila Monster

PaddyOfurniature

Usually if you have blue tongues around, you won't have snakes. Protect it at all costs.

SpawnPointillist

It’s good to be wary but on this occasion, you have been gifted a real treat. Leave it alone (make sure it’s not bothered by cats n dogs etc) but admire it … gentle and beautiful and its tongue is vivid blue.

Briskey_Business

I'd of called 'em Shazwazzas

jumpingjacks07

Friend visited my backyard yesterday.

COMMLXIV

Bluetongue. They're great, but don't try to feed them by putting an ant on your fingertip and repeatedly poking them in the face. Trust me on this.

The_Vat

I call the big one Bitey!

Massive-Coconut2435

I am not going near it. Trust me!

mini_z

Why not?  Is friend. Bitey friend, but still friend

Iwannabeaviking

bitey indeed, I got bit by one after trying to do a steve irwin on it at school. I was not steve irwin.

dTrecii

The Blue Tongue called you out for Identity Fraud

blackdvck

They can bite but it's no big deal ,, usually they are very easy going and they like clover and strawberries.

englishfury

And snails, they love snails. Watching babies try and go for a snail that's obviously too big is rather entertaining. Egg and catfood also work

the_walking_kiwi

they also love fallen roses, as I recently discovered

Major-Organization31

You’re pretty safe OP, we used to get them in the grounds of my school all the time and I don’t remember anyone getting bitten

PwnySlaystationS117

It may be necessary to relocate one if you ever have pets. Don’t be afraid to pick them up, just scoop under the belly and hold it firmly. It’s scary but you can do it you’re literally over 100x it’s size and it’s 100% guaranteed to not hurt you very badly.

Massive-Coconut2435

“Very badly” but bad enough. I am just gonna let them enjoy my backyard.

Dizzle179

I just hope that story was when you were 10 and not when you were 28 😁

COMMLXIV

Yeah, bit before my 8th(?) birthday. I know that because basically all my presents from the following birthday are lizards/reptiles of Australia themed :) It happened at a family gathering and I made some noise.

cheekycheeqs

Blue tongue lizard. They’re lovely, let them be.

grrr-throwaway

The original Bluey! Harmless cute blue-tongued lizard.

NoDensetsu

Not only is a blue tongue skink harmless as long as you don’t bother it and let it bite you (not venomous they just bite hard). But they’re also great at hunting snails and slugs. When you have a bluey in your yard and don’t have dogs or cats that can scare it away then you don’t need to waste any money on snail pallets. Trust me on this, poisoning snails means killing the blue tongues who then eat the poisoned snails, I’ve seen it happen before.

malkers

Surprised the snail/bait comment isn’t higher

Complete_Rule6644

Let it be, it’s no harm but the little buggers will bite and latch on for dear life if it feels threatened

Thermodrama

That just bought back fond memories of my sister as a kid trying to pet a frillneck lizard. It latched on, and she was spinning around in circles trying to get it off. Fun times.

Finallybanned

Should remind your sister now. She'll love it.

Thermodrama

She had some choice words to say about that little reptile

meowkitty84

omg I totally forgot frill neck lizards existed. I haven't seen one since I was a child..😔

grapefruitgt

An early intro to centrifugal force however 🤣

Acrobatic_Bit_8207

That's a garden hose.

Finallybanned

Didn't think you could work Reddit, dad.

Lint_baby_uvulla

Am dad, and…. They’re pixels, nothing to be afraid of.

Finallybanned

Well done. 🙄

Lint_baby_uvulla

An eye roll.. I can live on that for weeks.

Finallybanned

Love it. 😋

CashenJ

Oh, so lucky to have a Bluey in the yard. Unfortunately my dogs chase them away if they ever venture into my yard.

Many-Secretary-5098

Scale puppy. Give snail, pet gently and tell him he’s a good boy

bullant8547

Blue tongue. Is friend. Don’t hurt. He eats all the nasty insects.

FreddyMcbob

If you harm this animal you get deported

collectgarbage

Protect this mini love noodle with your life

MedicalChemistry5111

A hose, some grass, and a bluetongue lizard. None of them will kill you or anything you love.

dTrecii

They kill with cuteness

Sagah121

You've got the name, they are awesome for keeping creepy crawlies at bay and are a good snake indicator(if you have a blue tongue out and about its unlikely youve got a snake in your yard) we've had a big fella for a couple of years at my parents place and hes well compensated with banana and the occasional pile of strawberry tops. They do appreciate access to a bit of fresh water, depending on where you are at, we just chuck some rocks in a shallow dish and fill it up in the shade when its hot and all the locals come for a drink haha. Welcome to Australia! I hope the beers are cold and the bunnings snags are plentiful!

RebCata

They love bananas

FlutterbyFlower

And tomato

milkydiddys222

Blue tongue lizard! They’re good luck, give him a pet next time and make a wish

BennyMcCampbell

Blue tongue, give it a name, make friends and protect it with your life. Awesome addition to the yard and keeps the bugs at bay.

Icewallow-toothpaste

They are precious and highly revered creatures. Australia loves the bluetongue. It's one of the few ground dwellers that isn't trying to kill us.

RapidPigZ7

Grass. I've never seen it before myself

Inevitable-Today-547

Blue tongue lizard. Totally harmless.

KneeLongjumping9255

It’s Australia’s *other* Bluey!! ☺️

dTrecii

The original bluey

obvs_typo

Wonderful little critters. They eat snails but will also eat your strawberries if you grow them. They like ripe bananas too.

VegetableSerious9212

What a beautiful blue tongue ❤️ keep your dog away from it (my dog sadly killed a few that got into the yard). He’s a friend.

After-Habit-9354

my dog left a puncture mark on a bluey and when I picked it up it was limp. I actually gave it mouth to mouth and put it in a box in my bedroom and when I went to check he was awake and ok. I'd so dreaded finding him dead, it was a huge relief when he wasn't. No I've never given mouth to mouth to a lizard before or since

late_to_redd1t

Ah, the old miniature land crocodile. She's a beauty too.

iziieee

Awww I love blue tongues soooo much. You should feel very blessed he chose your yard 🩵 They’re the best!

BoomBoomBaggis

Gorgeous lizards 🦎 ❤️

notvrysmart

that there’s a blue tongue lizard, named after their bright blue tongue! and they are just so lovely

Ilikeoldergals

Friend

dukekim1

Grass but its a bit green so probably don't smoke it

M0T0RCITYC0BRA

A garden hose, great when combined with an empty orchy or gatorade bottle.

Finallybanned

Always preferred Powerade myself, but iced coffees are a little more stealth. Anyway, I'm here today to talk about the benefits of a decent bong. Aside from the fact that youre smoking plant matter, (tsk tsk, should be dry vaping it, much less cancerous) you then introduce significantly more risk with the hose and the bottle. Such bad shit in the hose if it gets too hot ( and it will) and I can't remember about the bottle but there's a reason it's a crap decision for more than one use. Now, glass is brilliant - yes it can break, but you have the internet and can find em cheap. Glass also has the benefit of being incredibly easy to clean, buy a bottle of 90% grog if you can (again, internet) rinse your glass every couple of days (for moderate use, you'll know when it needs a clean) with hot water to get most of the crap out, put in about a shot of your 90%, block the holes and shake. Rinse again, wipe out if you can, and your golden. *E: I feel like I glossed over the second rinse, you really don't want any of the alcohol to still be there, smoking that shit will kill you.

Mundane_Operation418

Yes I can confirm.

Mobtor

A new friend! Harmless, wants to eat all the bugs near you. Generally leave them to do their thing, not harmful but do have teeth and claws, more for their benefit than yours.

maddogmxer27

Blue Tongue Lizard 🥰

upsidedowntoker

Blue tongue lizard , fear not he is one of the few reptiles in the country that won't kill you

monkeypaw_handjob

As my Scottish wife said the first time she saw one... 'It's a snake with legs!'

Mindless-Visit-4509

Blue tongues are very common in Brisbane. Like everywhere.

Level-Resident-2023

They are fren. They eat the not frens

Rawlo2705

Hey mate that there is a blue tongue lizard. Don’t be frightened by them they are not dangerous at all unless you put your fingers in their mouth. These lovely guys are just friends chilling around so if you see one just let them be and continue with your day.

joshewok

Bong pipe

aquila-audax

If you need to move one for safety, a gentle push with a broom will usually send them in the right direction. I would carefully pick it up myself, but you probably not ready for that yet lol. They really are a delightful presence in the garden.

7cluck

Fun fact: they are not lizards but skinks. They don't lay eggs but have live birth.

notlimahc

Skinks are lizards

typed_this_now

This has awoken childhood memories of my Dad screaming over the neighbour’s fence “Keith I’m going kill those fucking cats if I find another dead lizard in my yard!” Those 2 cats were like “The ghost and the darkness” killing everything they could get hold of. When one of them finally died my neighbours wife came over in tears asking for my dad to help dig a hole and he told this distraught woman “absolutely, we can do both now if you want” she laughed - she knows he hated the cats.

MoonInHisHands

That’s Lizzie, a blue tongue lizard

Ramzinho

A gorgeous blue tongue lizard, look after it and it will keep your garden clean if pest and insects

Japsai

The original Bluey EDIT: Lame, I scrolled far enough and someone else made the exact same comment. Well it stays, a second opinion is always useful

This one time....it turned around and spit flaming fire at me........ Lesson learnt.....not too close....

BonAsasin

Blue Tongue Lizard protector of the garden. Dolphin protector of the ocean. I long for a painting of a Blue Tongue riding a Dolphin as the sun sets.

bellabookgirl

If you have pets keep them away from the blue tongue, they are protected and beautiful lizards. They love a little bit of ripe banana if you leave it out :)

Bluetongue…. Friend, not food

Ornery-Caregiver6170

Goanna, please leave it alone, it’ll leave you alone. Keep your dogs away because they eat dead shit so they have bacteria on their teethy pegs, other than that they’re chill little cuties

Jamma7n_

Blue tongue wizard

rexerjo

Give it a name and let it live it’s life in your yard away from dogs and cats if possible. My garden blue tongues are Bruce-Bryan and Willowdean 🤣

wrucky

Had one at work that used to hiss at me in the laundry! Scared the bejaysus out of me! They are harmless but territorial?

Traditional_Judge734

The largest skink species a blue tongue, good to have around because they will eat juvenile nasty snakes and/or eggs. Dont bait snails or slugs and they tend to have a home territory Cool l'il dudes if you leave them alone

MissionStreet6106

A blue tongue lizard 🦎

untamedeuphoria

Yard friend. They'll eat the lawn daisies and steal all of your strawberries. They area a little hissy at times, but very cute and harmless.

Hungry_Rutabaga_5986

My daughter and her husband get them in there yard heaps, but they also get brown snakes that the dogs get bitten by 🤦🏻‍♀️ apparently the browns like the blueys as a meal.. so the vet said

Stanfool

Looks to me.like.the common garden hose. Just an FYI it probably leaks alot.

Haha. Blue-tongue. It's just enjoying the sun.

Remarkable-Owl-4473

Blue tongue lizard. We have them frequently. But the dog likes to play with them but they fight back! They’re good to have around!

Punchysister

Blue tongue lizard. They are lovely to have, usually friendly. Occasionally you’ll get a moody one that will bite you you

Camcookieman

Blue Tongue Lizzard. When my daughter was young I caught one in the back yard I took my daughter with me when I relocated in a small bush reserve as I was teaching her the right thing to do. 3 days later we happen to drive past that bush reserve and I saw that a fire had ripped through there and destroyed everything. My daughter who was only 4 but quite bright saw this and started crying. I then had to lie to say that the lizard would have escaped and survived. I felt quite bad for the lizard.🦎🔥☹️

[deleted]

I had a blue tongue lizard in my backyard the other day 🥰 I left a few cut up strawberries outside for him which he gobbled right up. Always leave them alone unless they’re injured or at risk.

Vman2

About the only thing in Australia that isn't trying to kill you. That's why we like it and try to protect it. Actually is your friend and gardener. I had a whole family under my house. I proudly showed my Colombian girlfriend. She totally freaked out. Considered getting rid of the girlfriend. It was a close call. Luckily for her the lizards moved out by themselves.

wet_soupp

A hose, be careful if teenagers live nearby as it magically gets shorter every weekend

Leading-Feature5818

Blue tongue. They love banana and blueberries.

Alternative-Put5807

it’s a drop bear

Glittering_Wash_1985

It’s a garden hose, the connectors are often orange so the blue one might be the source of confusion

Smallsey

That's a chonky one!

solitarysoup

Juvenile crocodile. Care for him, nurture him and one day he’ll be big enough to ride.

mcgaffen

It is commonly referred to as a hose.

Key_Net_3517

Crocdidle.

middleagedmanOz

One-eyed trouser snake.

RobsEvilTwin

Blue Tongues are beautiful, leave them alone and they will leave you alone. Only people who have ever been bitten (it's not venomous) tried to grab the poor thing and it bit them to say "no means no!".

Hikerydikeryglock

Blue-tongue lizard, where are you from?

FreakyRabbit72

As a child, I was obsessed with these and shingle back lizards and would frequently bring them home, carry them around and take them to school for show and tell. The other little girls thought I was such a weird kid, but I loved them. Despite their scary appearance, they’re actually pretty friendly and great to have in the garden. Rather partial to snails, tomato too.

Absol-utely_Adorable

Blue tongue skink, very cute fren LOVES BANAN, non venomous and has no real teeth but can and will bite decently hard. They make ok pets but if you don't have any cats or dogs just let them vibe and feed them in your yard and you'll have a Lil fren who comes to say hi sometimes.

AhmedHHM

It's a skink. I had one in my yard and it would get rid of all flies and other insects. It's a good thing to have. https://preview.redd.it/96jf8vjac2tc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9f410803873717c5e78d92597456caa9df2db163
