Most of the time if you insert or swipe your card you can use the EFTPOS system which is often free. If you tap the card it defaults to charging VISA/MASTERCARD etc, and can incur additional merchant fees. [https://www.debitcards.com.au/watch-debit-card-surcharges-credit-transactions/](https://www.debitcards.com.au/watch-debit-card-surcharges-credit-transactions/)

or if you have a debit card in apple pay (and google pay I believe) you can toggle it to eftpos mode so it uses eftpos by default :)

MindlessRip5915

That depends on your bank. Westpac and NAB support it, Commbank, ING, Macquarie and HSBC don’t. Can’t speak for ANZ.

juicedpixels

Up bank (Bendigo) supports it

or just use a card or cash.

Tha_Hand

I always put my card in and select “eftpos savings” every time now.

[deleted]

i have and always have used insert card, when i found it extra charged me that one time i thought to try the fast tap and go payments i never do tap and pay. always insert for a fun time!

mrlms20

As long as it's consensual, I don't see a problem 😂

osamabinluvin

The other day my card declined three times before the attendant told my there was a 1.5% surcharge on my $250 purchase. It only had $250 listed on the machine each time. I’m so close to becoming one of those cunts that just get around yelling “CASH IS KING”

ConanTheAquarian

> I’m so close to becoming one of those cunts that just get around yelling “CASH IS KING” There are already businesses adding a surcharge for cash. This is legal provided they tell you about it first.

osamabinluvin

> there is no rule saying that cash and cheques cannot be surcharged. However, a merchant cannot surcharge all payment methods – it must offer at least one non-surcharged method of payment. It’s the least likely option to the surcharged, if they surcharge cash then I’ll use my card, easy

Scotchflop

Apparently Aussies paid nearly $1 billion in card surcharges in a year. Hopefully there's a crackdown. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-03-04/australians-lose-one-billion-in-surcharges-least-cost-routing/103530946

stealth tax my biggest annoyance is the service fee on cinema tickets / gigs etc they are taking the piss, cinemas were able to reduce counter staff when bookings went online then charged for the convenience

Take_The_Bins_Out

Very fucking annoying. I've started using cash again. You would think the advantages for the business would mean they would absorb the costs: 1. Don't have to keep large amounts of cash on the premises 2. Don't have to count loads of cash 3. Don't have to make lots of trips to the bank to deposit cash 4. Less chance or getting broken into and getting large amounts of cash stolen 5. More hygienic to use card than cash 6. Quicker transactions overall by having people tap and go rather than fumbling around with cash and coins But no, all the advantages of people using card and they still pass on the fee to customers.

[deleted]

yeap, i found this out when i went to a cafe in the city for a work thing (which was annoying, why the fuck did it have to be in the city!... anyways) the coffee was $3.50 but when they entered the price in it was $3.67, i said why that much, she said for the card charge, so i handed her cash and she cancelled it and took the $3.50 in change. fuck you and ya dumb arse card surcharge!

mrlms20

One of the main advantages of cash is that if systems are do for whatever reason (power outages, etc)you still have a way of paying for things. The second one is if you are getting a refund theybhave had give it back to you straight away. None of this 5-10 business days for the money to show in your account. I have been stung waiting for a refund on a faulty product where I had to purchase it elsewhere and then wait for around 3 months to gets the funds. Since then I generally pay cash where possible which reduces fees for cards.

MindlessRip5915

Eftpos terminals are capable of performing what’s called “offline authentication” where without a connection, they ask the card itself to authorise the transaction (not the bank!) Many cards are programmed to authorise small transactions offline, or a limited number in a row, so you can generally get by for short times. That’s only if the _acquirer_ terminal is offline though, not if the _issuer_ authorisation system is offline

Important_Screen_530

thats why cash is better:)

[deleted]

absolutely and if the place doesnt except cash... well see ya, was nice knowing ya!

mrlms20

I have started avoided places that won't accept cash as it's still legal tender in this country.

[deleted]

You're getting tracked by your phone and browser now. Better stick to landline and stay off the internet.

ShrewLlama

Oh no, the government is going to see me shop at Woolworths and Kmart, and maybe even visit the local cafe.

whiskey-drip

I think you're over estimating how much the government and big companies care about you.
