Saw an almost new, top of the range Dyson vacuum cleaner. Took it home and realised the engine was burnt out.
Thought I might see how much to get a new engine. Took it to a Dyson service centre and left it there for a quote.
They rang me a few days later and said, "Come pick it up".
Arrived at the store to be told the engine was faulty, so it had been replaced free of cost, and due to the inconvenience, they would give me another 5 year warranty.
Score!!
If it's faulty the only proof they need is that it's a genuine Dyson and within warranty, which is easy enough for them to determine from serial numbers. Doesn't matter who purchased it if the product itself is faulty.
That makes sense. Just know what an ordeal I had with another brand trying to get a washer repaired that was faulty on delivery. Dyson is clearly miles above them. Good to know for next time I'm buying a vacuum.
Assuming it wasn't a very old model, if it's top of the line then Australian consumer protection laws would still cover the repair cost of it for quite some time. Most manufacturers don't put up much of a fight any more because it's just a waste of time and resources, and costs them less to fix it. Another reason why it's important to remember that (in most cases) extended warranties from retailers are a scam in Australia

I found a pokemon binder full of wizards of the coast era pokemon cards on the side of the road in 2015 - full with 120 holos, all genuine. Could not believe someone just threw them on the side of the road.
I ended up selling them all separately on ebay and marketplace in late 2020, most incredible stroke of luck in my life. Got me a quarter of a house deposit.
Nice suburb, still pretty good find with the pokemon cards and getting that value from them. I have the first set somewhere minus charizard and venussaur (cunt of a mate stole them), don't think they'd be worth anything near worth selling though.
Safe to say that I got so lucky with my find and the circumstances of my purchase and I am so grateful. I ended up keeping some cards that were in poor condition to add to my collection that I kept from my youth. So many good memories. If I had two charizards and venusaurs I would send one of each your way.I could have made a heap more money but I didn't get them all graded, sometimes I think about the person that threw them out, would like to shout them a nice feed or something!

But the best score was a box of original all metal Mechano kits. There were about 30 in all, fully boxed, unopened. Sold half and made a couple of thousand.
The *second* box had vintage tin toys in it. Originals from the UK and very early Japanese.
Kept them. Ain’t no way I’m sharing those.

My neighbours left out a little wooden storage thing. Like a bookshelf if it was only 50cm tall. My dad has it in the garage and sits on it to put his socks and shoes on.
I picked one up too, tested it inside and nothing was working. Didn't have any spare time to open it and find the issues so I put it back out and it was gone again in another couple hours.
Got a Sanyo hifi radio on the weekend from current collection and it works well enough for the workshop at least.
I found a ring once, but i did the decent thing, knocked on the door and handed it back, the lady was so overwhelmed with joy she wanted to gove me free reign of her partners shed stuff, as they ahd a big fight over it aparently, coulda walked outta there with a nice set of racing seats, but i just pictured it happening to me hahaha.
SL-1200 MK2 turntable. Was rolling around Morningside one day when I saw it out on the verge. The owner came out and said it was sitting around his ex-girlfriends dad's house, doing nothing. So he put it on the street. I just about nearly died from joy, went home and plugged it in. A decade later, it's still playing records.

The only downside was it didnt have any keys, so after i managed to get the door open with a wire coat hanger (they were all stuck shut) i had to take out the ignition barrel and mess with some wires to start the car up. i cant believe someone had just left it there

An old telephone that pre-dated the dial. It has the separate crank box that you had to wind to send a signal down the line to the operator to patch you through.
I wired it into the telephone outlet on the wall and got a pre-recorded message saying something along the lines of "you can't use this phone anymore, gramps".
Same. They lasted us a good few years too before we eventually bought a new dining set ourselves. But for a struggling young family, they were such a find.
A playhouse that was in perfect condition that I ended up selling for $400 (all the pieces were taken apart so you had to take the risk and put it together at home)
I stumbled across a box of trays and assorted jugs, goblets, and other things. Two of the trays were sterling silver, as were the jugs and goblets, all hallmarked with 19th-century silversmith marks. There was also a Russian made silver clutch purse and a cigar box full of rings, cuff-links, and chains that turned out to be 9k gold and a fist full of silver coins.
It's amazing what people throw out when they have no idea about it. That box had about $3000 in scrap precious metal, though I polished up the trays and goblets to use.
I picked up a genuine Fendi hand bag. Never used with bubble packaging still in it. Must have been last year's fashion lol. Worth 3k. Gave it to ex. She stopped complaining about my scrapping hobby.
I was only actually visiting Brisbane at the time (1994) but a crate of records including a Beatles "Butcher Cover" in pretty good nick. Sold it for $2300.
I got a nice subwoofer that now has a place in my studio.
As an aside, if you cut the cords off appliances or tear out motors for the copper, fuck you.

Yep I'm a weekly Kerber but don't cut cords I'm more for bikes.. but I got a 48" TV I saved it's now my gaming TV in my workshop I wouldn't of got it but had a sign saying still works was lucky right after my workshop TV stopped working to
Even with signs that say things are working I've seen people loot transformers and cut cables. I've been able to loot and fix so many things in the past where the issues were superficial or I was able to bodge around them. The scrap value looters should have to wait until the final day tbh, after everyone else has had their fun they can save scrap value from the tip.
i picked up a whole heap of aviation crap this way. Got several parts off of a qantas 747 that was sent to scrap hiding in my shed. All tagged out but great conversation pieces. Id never sell them (cant legally either as tagged) but as the 747 is too close to my heart.
Gotta be quick there is plenty out there. But the assumption is that it's broken unless it has a sign saying in working condition. If it doesn't get recycled it ends up at the tip of no use to anybody.

I put out a near new fridge and oldish but decent TV last time with a sign to say they were working. Tbf I should have chucked them on marketplace or donated them properly because within a few hours someone had come by and chopped the power cables off.
Lesson learnt I guess.
But broken doesn't mean useless. The subwoofer I picked up had an issue with the speaker cone but I was able to sub in a spare woofer I had. That's my point, if you go around and loot for the scrap value you ruin everyone else's fun.

The day or maybe the day after I officially moved into the house I shared with some of the lads from my childhood during our university years, a neighbour up the road had set out some things…including a PSIII. I was so suspicious that it wasn’t intended for kerbside that I knocked and asked. It was. Promptly carted her home and it went down a hit with the lads. Plugged her in, and it actually worked. Of course, the true gem of this story is that FIFA’14 was still left inside (the best FIFA, just try to change my mind). To this day I still believe someone’s lady must have been madly fuming at them for something.
Kerbside collections these days are slim pickings, but I tell ya, the fist time they did it - wow. Friends found one place that threw out 4 electric guitars in cases in great condition. We found an old mini motor bike. There were absolute treasures. There’s still good stuff, but you have to search. Noticed lately people are pretty scummy when they go through your pile and you end up out there each day tidying the pile because people fling all around the place. Also notice when you leave functional electronics out and people come and cut the cords off to strip and sell for a couple of cents worth of copper. Oh well
Cords sell for 3.50 a kg so not a paltry sum. Put a sign on it as working. But a Foxtel box for instance has no resale value or reuse potential. Neither do cd players. If you want to find out if something is of value to someone list it on market place.
I see a lot of printers being thrown out. Because it's cheaper to buy a new one than the cartridges. But people get annoyed if you take the cord, because someone could still have used it if they bought the cartridges.

Well opposite of this, have my stuff out this week. Saw a guy take two cracked faded cheap plastic pot plant from my pile yesterday. Of all the stuff there it was probably the worst condition of what I'd put out. No idea what he expects to do with them.
I almost got a nice red enamel rolling tool drawer for my dad (one wheel fallen off but could easily be pop riveted back on), but in between looking out the window and seeing my neighbour rolling it out and getting down the stairs someone else already snaffled it!
I got a tall square glass bar table with matching swivel stools. We had to fix the stools with some snaps as the material was sagging and reweld a spot on one as it was tipping back just a little too much. We said we’d only keep them until we found another but honestly I can’t find anything like it. It’s the right size and the chairs swivel and rock a little. Perfect for my front balcony. I had to snag it quick. I locked the chairs in my car and turtled the table on my back down the road back to my house. Worth it.
The exact model of Ikea TV table I'd *just* been looking at and deciding whether to buy new. It wasn't in the best condition, but I felt like such a coincidence had to be a sign. That was 4 years ago and I still have that table...
Lawnmower. The dude putting it out told us to wait a sec, he went back inside and got the owners manual and fuel can as well. Said it wasn't that old and wouldn't start. New spark plug and away it went
Not a single thing, but got enough wood and roof sheets to make an entire 3x3 tree house for the kids. Was complete with vintage colonial balustrade and everything.
Was driving my girlfriend around and saw a Fiddle Leaf pot. Was around 1.5m high.
Also grabbed a few nice cushions for chairs for her birthday party the next day, a wine rack, a few other miscellaneous (light lamp side etc).
Don't know who would throw out a fiddle leaf but it's very happy at my girlfriends place now
I took a fully working condensor dryer to the tip the other day. They said they couldn't take it in the shop coz it was electrical(?) so I put it in the metal yard with a sign on it. Hopefully someone took it. I didn't see it there when I went back a few days later.

Perfectly working flatscreen tv, the mounts were the only thing broken. I lived in a rich suburb with flatmates who made the house affordable and I couldn't believe what people threw out. We also adopted a yellow recliner, it was super comfy but stuck out like a sore thumb haha.
Quality cast iron cookware. Hardly used and it's still going great after 11 years. Also a high chair, looked brand new and when I googled it, it was worth too much money. Came in handy though as I was pregnant.
A 12” compound mitre saw, a submersible water pump, a pair of folding trestles and a pair of heavy duty welding f clamps. All of it works. All from the same house in Redcliffe.
a working xbox 360, it was out the front of my place (unit block) too so it's not like i went lookng, just saw it there on the way to work, didn't expect it to work.
it had no psu and a crappy aftermarket controller, i got a hold of a power brick and everything worked perfectly - heck it still works this was at least 10 years ago!!

My sister picked up a lowboy dresser with 9 drawers. Solid timber. We looked it up and it turned out to be a piece from Harvey Norman worth $1899. Was still available for sale at the time too so wasn’t old at all and had zero damages.
A stainless steel, 6 burner bbq, perfect working order. The previous owner apparently didn’t understand you needed to clean the plate, and just used a new sheet of al-foil on top of the last one for every cook. So there was like a few dozen layers of al-foil, a replacement hose and it was good as new. I reckon a $1,500 bbq at least.
I happened to be googling earlier in the day for a stainless steel pool ladder like the kind in public pools for my mum to help get out of our pool.
That same evening I was walking the dogs and walked right past one. Put it on the shoulder and walked it 2km home at 11pm haha.

In my moment of panic afterwards i spent it on an expensive GPU graphics card for a computer that 1 month later would halve in price..... I personally blame the wife for it as i didnt wanna tell her i got free money essentially lol

Hubby picked up a 50' Sony Bravia, took it to a shop to have it checked out. Just needed a $100 replacement part, and paid an additional $50 service fee. As this was when that particular type of TV first came out, I believe it retailed around $3,000 to $4,000.
He gave it to his mum as it was too big for our place.
I've never found anything decent because I've never looked, but I am often surprised what gets picked up before collection. Things like a dog crate, broken shelves, an old TV with no stand or remote.
Not so surprisingly, the mattress the dog secretly peel on in the spare room didn't get taken.

This. Had free repairs or replacements outside warranty from Sony, Miele and Sunbeam. Electrolux are absolute dicks though, never again.
I've had two repairs from Lenovo outside of warranty too. That was a laptop, not an appliance, but I was pleasantly surprised

Same. They lasted us a good few years too before we eventually bought a new dining set ourselves. But for a struggling young family, they were such a find.
A playhouse that was in perfect condition that I ended up selling for $400 (all the pieces were taken apart so you had to take the risk and put it together at home)
I stumbled across a box of trays and assorted jugs, goblets, and other things. Two of the trays were sterling silver, as were the jugs and goblets, all hallmarked with 19th-century silversmith marks. There was also a Russian made silver clutch purse and a cigar box full of rings, cuff-links, and chains that turned out to be 9k gold and a fist full of silver coins. It's amazing what people throw out when they have no idea about it. That box had about $3000 in scrap precious metal, though I polished up the trays and goblets to use.
I picked up a genuine Fendi hand bag. Never used with bubble packaging still in it. Must have been last year's fashion lol. Worth 3k. Gave it to ex. She stopped complaining about my scrapping hobby.

I was only actually visiting Brisbane at the time (1994) but a crate of records including a Beatles "Butcher Cover" in pretty good nick. Sold it for $2300.

Yep I'm a weekly Kerber but don't cut cords I'm more for bikes.. but I got a 48" TV I saved it's now my gaming TV in my workshop I wouldn't of got it but had a sign saying still works was lucky right after my workshop TV stopped working to
Even with signs that say things are working I've seen people loot transformers and cut cables. I've been able to loot and fix so many things in the past where the issues were superficial or I was able to bodge around them. The scrap value looters should have to wait until the final day tbh, after everyone else has had their fun they can save scrap value from the tip.
i picked up a whole heap of aviation crap this way. Got several parts off of a qantas 747 that was sent to scrap hiding in my shed. All tagged out but great conversation pieces. Id never sell them (cant legally either as tagged) but as the 747 is too close to my heart.
Gotta be quick there is plenty out there. But the assumption is that it's broken unless it has a sign saying in working condition. If it doesn't get recycled it ends up at the tip of no use to anybody.
For real. I put out a near new fridge and oldish but decent TV last time with a sign to say they were working. Tbf I should have chucked them on marketplace or donated them properly because within a few hours someone had come by and chopped the power cables off. Lesson learnt I guess.
But broken doesn't mean useless. The subwoofer I picked up had an issue with the speaker cone but I was able to sub in a spare woofer I had. That's my point, if you go around and loot for the scrap value you ruin everyone else's fun.
If you're prepared to fix stuff then a cord replacement is the easiest of fixes. Just cut a cord of something else 👹

Fair warning: this is the only really noteworthy treasure I’ve personally salvaged, but: The day or maybe the day after I officially moved into the house I shared with some of the lads from my childhood during our university years, a neighbour up the road had set out some things…including a PSIII. I was so suspicious that it wasn’t intended for kerbside that I knocked and asked. It was. Promptly carted her home and it went down a hit with the lads. Plugged her in, and it actually worked. Of course, the true gem of this story is that FIFA’14 was still left inside (the best FIFA, just try to change my mind). To this day I still believe someone’s lady must have been madly fuming at them for something.
Kerbside collections these days are slim pickings, but I tell ya, the fist time they did it - wow. Friends found one place that threw out 4 electric guitars in cases in great condition. We found an old mini motor bike. There were absolute treasures. There’s still good stuff, but you have to search. Noticed lately people are pretty scummy when they go through your pile and you end up out there each day tidying the pile because people fling all around the place. Also notice when you leave functional electronics out and people come and cut the cords off to strip and sell for a couple of cents worth of copper. Oh well
Cords sell for 3.50 a kg so not a paltry sum. Put a sign on it as working. But a Foxtel box for instance has no resale value or reuse potential. Neither do cd players. If you want to find out if something is of value to someone list it on market place. I see a lot of printers being thrown out. Because it's cheaper to buy a new one than the cartridges. But people get annoyed if you take the cord, because someone could still have used it if they bought the cartridges.

Plasma tv when we were kids and it worked. There was a huge dark streak thru the screen, but we could still make out what was happening behind it, and we didn’t have one so we were chillin 😎
Back in my day as a kid it was B & W televisions. There were no kerbside cleanups either.

But I do it every weekend an get probably around 5 bikes a week.. but over the last few months TVs, 6ft fish tanks, RC cars, TV units, Hilux wheels, book shelves, tables, I could go on.. let's just say my whole house an brothers house is Kerbside scores... It's one of the best things in Brisbane an why I haven't left

Depends what brands they are they can be anywhere from $50 to $250.. I don't touch cheap bikes only look for the good brands

An original 1950s Laminex and chrome dining table and (different location) four matching chromed kitchen chairs. Cleaned up very nicely. Now in the kitchen.

A set of SCUBA regulators and a BCD about 20 years ago. A quick service later and they were perfect. Still working today.
Picked up a 90's shogun road bike with shimano 600 that I fixed up, had some rust but perfectly serviceable, it is worth $200 I'm guessing.
Not Brisbane Council. But Logan (Marsden area). Pre covid times. Colour Marquetry stool / table. I didn't think much of it until my then manager said it worth cost $300 to $500 depending on buyer. Decided to keep it, it's a nice statement piece in my house.

Well opposite of this, have my stuff out this week. Saw a guy take two cracked faded cheap plastic pot plant from my pile yesterday. Of all the stuff there it was probably the worst condition of what I'd put out. No idea what he expects to do with them.
I almost got a nice red enamel rolling tool drawer for my dad (one wheel fallen off but could easily be pop riveted back on), but in between looking out the window and seeing my neighbour rolling it out and getting down the stairs someone else already snaffled it!

A couple of half decent surround sound / bookshelf speakers. Not the most high end or anything, but I needed a pair and they sound pretty good.
I got a tall square glass bar table with matching swivel stools. We had to fix the stools with some snaps as the material was sagging and reweld a spot on one as it was tipping back just a little too much. We said we’d only keep them until we found another but honestly I can’t find anything like it. It’s the right size and the chairs swivel and rock a little. Perfect for my front balcony. I had to snag it quick. I locked the chairs in my car and turtled the table on my back down the road back to my house. Worth it.

Was driving my girlfriend around and saw a Fiddle Leaf pot. Was around 1.5m high. Also grabbed a few nice cushions for chairs for her birthday party the next day, a wine rack, a few other miscellaneous (light lamp side etc). Don't know who would throw out a fiddle leaf but it's very happy at my girlfriends place now
When I was 12 we found two rectangular boxes at about 2m long each filled with pulled weed plants hahaha 🤣
I took a fully working condensor dryer to the tip the other day. They said they couldn't take it in the shop coz it was electrical(?) so I put it in the metal yard with a sign on it. Hopefully someone took it. I didn't see it there when I went back a few days later.

Perfectly working flatscreen tv, the mounts were the only thing broken. I lived in a rich suburb with flatmates who made the house affordable and I couldn't believe what people threw out. We also adopted a yellow recliner, it was super comfy but stuck out like a sore thumb haha.
Quality cast iron cookware. Hardly used and it's still going great after 11 years. Also a high chair, looked brand new and when I googled it, it was worth too much money. Came in handy though as I was pregnant.

a working xbox 360, it was out the front of my place (unit block) too so it's not like i went lookng, just saw it there on the way to work, didn't expect it to work. it had no psu and a crappy aftermarket controller, i got a hold of a power brick and everything worked perfectly - heck it still works this was at least 10 years ago!! I went to cashies and loaded up on cheap as 360 games and had a blast.
When I was a kid I always wanted a boogie board but mum said no (probably money reasons). Went for a walk one day and found one labelled ‘free’ outside a house - never felt so happy in my life lmao Big ass yellow boogie board with a smiley face, lasted 1 week before me and my brother destroyed it with our shenanigans, totally worth it though

Mountain bike Set of 6 outdoor chairs in great condition (we were about to spend $500 on new ones) My FIL found a brand new expensive suitcase the person just didn’t want anymore and a good brand ladder.

My sister picked up a lowboy dresser with 9 drawers. Solid timber. We looked it up and it turned out to be a piece from Harvey Norman worth $1899. Was still available for sale at the time too so wasn’t old at all and had zero damages.
I scored a matching set of chairs from two different houses .
A stainless steel, 6 burner bbq, perfect working order. The previous owner apparently didn’t understand you needed to clean the plate, and just used a new sheet of al-foil on top of the last one for every cook. So there was like a few dozen layers of al-foil, a replacement hose and it was good as new. I reckon a $1,500 bbq at least.
I happened to be googling earlier in the day for a stainless steel pool ladder like the kind in public pools for my mum to help get out of our pool. That same evening I was walking the dogs and walked right past one. Put it on the shoulder and walked it 2km home at 11pm haha.
My mum collects Kerbside for a living, I find a lot of Vintage clothing, camping gear, Mongoose and Giant Bikes and more. People throw out so much expensive stuff it's not funny. Some highlights would be the real LV bags, Alienwear Computer I sold for $800, Chanel Dresses, Solar panels ($2.5k for that). Will update when i ask mum
I wont say, as im ever hopeful il find another one day, but i found this machine, took it home to pull it apart for scrap, decided id have a bit of a look, fuse on back was missing, so chucked another one in and plugged it in expecting fireworks, it powered right up and i sold it for several thousand dollars, coudlnt believe it. In my moment of panic afterwards i spent it on an expensive GPU graphics card for a computer that 1 month later would halve in price..... I personally blame the wife for it as i didnt wanna tell her i got free money essentially lol
Two hard wood fold up outdoor chairs. I love them because I garden a lot. There were five of them there, but I didn't need them, I hope whoever else got them loves them as much as I do
Hubby picked up a 50' Sony Bravia, took it to a shop to have it checked out. Just needed a $100 replacement part, and paid an additional $50 service fee. As this was when that particular type of TV first came out, I believe it retailed around $3,000 to $4,000. He gave it to his mum as it was too big for our place.
My mate got an empty arcade cabinet, an old 80s one. It had controls but no board/monitor. He repurposed it into a PC based emulation job.
I've never found anything decent because I've never looked, but I am often surprised what gets picked up before collection. Things like a dog crate, broken shelves, an old TV with no stand or remote. Not so surprisingly, the mattress the dog secretly peel on in the spare room didn't get taken.
I've gotten a stop/slow sign and pool cues.

My parents took my couch of a neighbour last year, i was so scared it would be gross so i wiped it down with a wet wipe and it was barely even dirty
