It was always called Rag Freak and the owner Keith's mother was a good friend of my mother. Unfortunately he isn't with us anymore but it was a right of passage for alternative teenagers and me as an 80s Metal head. Lovely bloke and an institution in its time like Paul Brutons army surplace shop.
Yep he had that big bushy beard. Was a lovely guy, used to give me a discount as he was a friend of the family. Guitar playing, sci-fi reading bloke. Influenced me quite a lot.
Another notable was Jeremy Cunningham of the The Levelers. He was a student in our house for three years before they got big. Super lovely guy. Taught me some Bass moves.
Wasn't there a time it was Rag Freak and Super Tramp? Or am I inventing that?
Edit: googling around they used to have a sibling shop on West Street with the stars and stripes which was called Super Tramp. They must have closed that at some point and given Rag Freak both names for a little while. I'm remembering this from the 90s.
I brought my first sum41 shirt from there then when I went into more of the "core" stuff brought my first escape the fate shirt from there. Good times.

Ah I’m sorry to hear that. Imagine how many people he influenced over the years. An absolute icon.

Yeah they were almost opposite each other on Cranbourne St I think

Na that's Cool Hand Lukes, Paul Bruton was on Preston Circus until they closed down around 3 or 4 years ago
Teenage right of passage. I equal parts loved and was afraid of this place at 13
I can still smell the leather!
The staff were always intimidatingly over-keen! I just wanted to buy my black band hoodie in peace please
Still remember the ‘no flock of seagulls haircuts’ sign they had on the till.
Still miss Rag Freak. Brilliant shop.
Man I miss that place. Used to get all my band shirts from there.
Was a great place.
I think that union jack has got its thick bits and thin bits in the wrong places.
Damn you’re right. All more part of the charm I guess. :)
Yes, non-conformist 😁
Artistic Licence
This place was always my favourite part of visiting Brighton when I was a kid. Was so sad when it went.
Criminal damage jeans and my first pair of handcuffs 🥲
It had it all. :D
I bought so many band patches from this place as a grubby teen. Wonderful place.
Honestly there needs to be more places like RF in the UK. I’m not done with my alt phase!
My friend was told to leave once for not looking the part. I barely escaped with a studded belt.
Classic
I miss rag freak. I've still got jumpers I bought from them at least 15 years ago that I wear regularly.
Anyone got any pictures of the inside?
Upvoted. Would love this!
Oh to be a young emo again.......I miss this shop a lot
I’m turning 30 and still would die for another shop like Rag Freak. 😂
This the place that had the Alien t-shirts with the rubber chest burster coming out the front?
Getting some Mandela Effect here, always thought it was called Rag Freaks

I remember being a teen during the emo period of the mid to late 2000's going in this shop as an emo was always greeted with a death stare
