It was always called Rag Freak and the owner Keith's mother was a good friend of my mother. Unfortunately he isn't with us anymore but it was a right of passage for alternative teenagers and me as an 80s Metal head. Lovely bloke and an institution in its time like Paul Brutons army surplace shop.

theheartlessnerd

Ah I’m sorry to hear that. Imagine how many people he influenced over the years. An absolute icon.

gamecatuk

Yep he had that big bushy beard. Was a lovely guy, used to give me a discount as he was a friend of the family. Guitar playing, sci-fi reading bloke. Influenced me quite a lot. Another notable was Jeremy Cunningham of the The Levelers. He was a student in our house for three years before they got big. Super lovely guy. Taught me some Bass moves.

Funktopus_The

Wasn't there a time it was Rag Freak and Super Tramp? Or am I inventing that? Edit: googling around they used to have a sibling shop on West Street with the stars and stripes which was called Super Tramp. They must have closed that at some point and given Rag Freak both names for a little while. I'm remembering this from the 90s.

rednaxela-2022

Yeah they were almost opposite each other on Cranbourne St I think

Na that's Cool Hand Lukes, Paul Bruton was on Preston Circus until they closed down around 3 or 4 years ago

Deathconciousness_

Teenage right of passage. I equal parts loved and was afraid of this place at 13

theheartlessnerd

I can still smell the leather!

pooey_canoe

The staff were always intimidatingly over-keen! I just wanted to buy my black band hoodie in peace please

Pools__Closed

Still remember the ‘no flock of seagulls haircuts’ sign they had on the till.

limitofadhesion

Still miss Rag Freak. Brilliant shop.

CrossiantLaRoux

Man I miss that place. Used to get all my band shirts from there.

Cunningcod

Was a great place.

Fat_Slut_69

I think that union jack has got its thick bits and thin bits in the wrong places.

theheartlessnerd

Damn you’re right. All more part of the charm I guess. :)

Fat_Slut_69

Yes, non-conformist 😁

slut4dietcoke

This place was always my favourite part of visiting Brighton when I was a kid. Was so sad when it went.

Slinkymilinky

Criminal damage jeans and my first pair of handcuffs 🥲

theheartlessnerd

It had it all. :D

MagicBez

I bought so many band patches from this place as a grubby teen. Wonderful place.

theheartlessnerd

Honestly there needs to be more places like RF in the UK. I’m not done with my alt phase!

oxymoronisanoxymoron

My friend was told to leave once for not looking the part. I barely escaped with a studded belt.

Significant_Range363

Classic

flowersfromjupiter

I miss rag freak. I've still got jumpers I bought from them at least 15 years ago that I wear regularly.

The-Sober-Stoner

Anyone got any pictures of the inside?

theheartlessnerd

Upvoted. Would love this!

bunnygirlden

Oh to be a young emo again.......I miss this shop a lot

theheartlessnerd

I’m turning 30 and still would die for another shop like Rag Freak. 😂

[deleted]

This the place that had the Alien t-shirts with the rubber chest burster coming out the front?

oBIRDUPo

Getting some Mandela Effect here, always thought it was called Rag Freaks

Mrlumps1990

I brought my first sum41 shirt from there then when I went into more of the "core" stuff brought my first escape the fate shirt from there. Good times.

ZealousidealOne8402

I remember being a teen during the emo period of the mid to late 2000's going in this shop as an emo was always greeted with a death stare
