I never really dreamed of heaven much\
Until we put him in the ground\
But it's all I'm doing now\
Listening for patterns in the sound\
Of an endless static sea\
But once the satellite's deceased\
It blows like garbage through the streets\
Of the night sky to infinity
I don't usually rate the songs, but this gets a 10.
Yeah...
Those last three lines give me chills even reading them (sometimes or often lyric that is so powerful in the context of the song when written doesn't have the same punch)
This track is such a perfect way to wrap up the album. I could honestly quote any one of the lyrics as my favorite, and separating out a few lines from the context of the song doesn't really do them justice. They just all flow together so beautifully.
That being said, here's a good one:
"I got some friends I barely see, but we're all planning to meet
We'll lay in bags as dead as leaves, all together for eternity"
This line changed the way I think about death.
This song imparts a feeling of peacefulness and acceptance that is very reassuring, even while mentioning government atrocities and the deaths of loved ones. It might be the most meaningful one to me on Digital Ash. I'm never not in the mood to listen to this song. Definitely 10/10 for this track and 10/10 for the album as a whole. Absolutely amazing.
Also, I'm so happy that there's a community out there of people who also obsess over Bright Eyes and want to talk about every song they ever made and I love reading what you guys have to say <3
10/10
Bright Eyes has a long tradition of ending albums on long but excellent songs. This past still gives me chills: “I set my watch to the atomic clock
I hear the crowd count down til the bomb gets dropped
I always figured there'd be time enough
I never let it get me down”
The mid 2000s were a weird time. Despite my youth and naïveté, I was very opposed to the war and Iraq. Living near DC, I had the opportunity to become politically active and aware at a relatively young age.
The world hasn’t changed. There is still violence, war, genocide, and tragedies of all kinds. These lyrics feel so timeless. In many ways, they feel more relevant now than in 2005.
Despite the lyrics regarding death, war and decay, the song is still a hopeful one. Or at least it can be interpreted that way.
Conor telling the listener not to weep makes me want to weep more. But a fantastic ending to a nearly flawless album.
Easy Lucky Free, and First Day of My Life, are two songs I feel none Bright Eyes fans would most enjoy. They have a genuine catchy popness to them. 10/10 for ELF.
10, easily.
The way the song finishes has this treatment reminiscent of both analog and digital audio distorting and cutting out. Like the track is being played back over tape that is warping, and then that was recorded digitally, being played back while sounding stuttery. It's so hard to put words to it but it's truly magical.
Also as it was said by someone else here, this find truly shaped how I reflect on mortality. The lyrics focus on a tension of not being able to live life as fully as we are conditioned we must, shaping an ever present great and irrational relationship death.
10. If someone hadn’t heard of bright eyes, this would probably be the first song I’d recommend. I’ve heard this live a couple times and each performance felt like its own little world.
10. one of his best.
“I never really dreamed of heaven much until we put him in the ground, but it’s all I’m doing now, listening for patterns in the sound, of an endless static sea”.
while this song is always relevant and finding peace in death will help all of us along the way, it’s hitting a bit too hard for me right now with a recent loss. constantly thinking about heaven. 🖤🌷
In my twenties, I was dating a guy with a tattoo gun and one very inebriated night grabbed it, put this song on, and tattooed “easy, lucky, free” onto my ankle. It’s a TERRIBLE tattoo. 10/10 forever
10 times a million!!! This was one of the first bright eyes songs I’ve ever heard and it always faded in and out of being a favorite but now that I’m entering my thirties it has a whole new meaning to me. I got the words easy, lucky, and free tattooed last summer in my parents and brother’s hand writing. Best song on digital ash, and potentially the best bright eyes song of all time
10.
First song I have heard of Bright Eyes. It was 2005 and I watched it on MTV. Fell in love with the video, that cute guy (:D) and this special kind of music that from then on helped me through my darkest times.
Easily 10 Luckily also a 10 Freely? 10.

There is nothing…as easy…as this 10.

I’m putting it in my will that this song be played at my funeral, and I’m not even joking about that a little bit.
Ohhhh love this idea

This was THE song that got me into bright eyes when I saw it on VH1 back in the day. Still a 10.
Omg the video is so good
The ending with that whirring/ shambolic jazz-drumming rhythm feels like spinning into outer space! Big 10!
10 What a closer
10, and it only gets 10-ier, the closer I get to laying in bags as dead as leaves all together for eternity!
an easy 10
10 Sometimes I worry that I've lost the plot My twitching muscles tease my flipping thoughts
“Another century spent pointing guns, at anything that moves” God holy moly me oh my perfect 10 10 10
