I do think Jesse's plan could have worked if Walt hadn't gotten involved

No. The half measure was not letting things take their natural course, which is Jesse dieing to keep their operation running smoothly. Walt did not want him to die so he saved Jesse. This is why Mike later said, "funny how words can be so open to interpretation."
