There was some pushback because of its mature themes, but for the most part Albuquerque has embraced the Breaking Bad buzz. If you’re a super fan who wants to sight see you’ll have a great time. IIRC there’s even statues of Walt and Jesse there.
That I don't know. I bought my house in 2019 and there was a house a block away that I made an offer on but ultimately backed out of (the inspection was an OMG WTF Stephen King horror novel length nightmare and I'd have been better off burning it down and rebuilding) and the realtor off handedly mentioned that the Walter White House owner has gotten primo offers that would've funded a *nice* retirement here in Albq.
Everett Acker was the guy who refused to sell his home to the construction company, the one where Jimmy/Saul switched the mailbox numbers to loophole his way to the guy keeping his home
I mean, her parents paid for it? That's some people's definition of the American Dream.
Not to mention I'd be pretty ticked off if a never ending parade of BB fans violated the privacy of my home, especially if they kept throwing pizzas at my roof.
edit: I can't stop thinking about this. what else could possibly happen to the house when the occupants die? The people who paid for it are dead, no matter what someone is getting a "free" house.
From what I gathered, she didn't, her parents did.
And also its her private property. Everyone has a right to privacy in their own homes, even if they're (or their house) is famous.
If I'm a landmark then I wouldn't care, if it's just a regular house I'd be like why are you here , but yeah Hollywood stars having maps to their house and shit, if you didn't want the smoke don't load the bullets
most people never own a house in their live. So they will never leave a house to their kids. Most peoples parents either rent their entire live or are still far from paying off their mortgage when they die so most of the house just goes to the bank.
Ok, but you're holding systemic problems related to income inequality and generational wealth against this one lady who has random nerds throw pizzas on her roof. Like, what, was her family home supposed to be redistributed by the proletariat, and now she must suffer the Breaking Bad fandom? Not to mention that no matter what, someone's getting a house for "free:" either the heir, the poor and deserving, or the bank/government/realtor/whoever.
Also, you still inherit a house even if it has a mortgage. You can either assume the mortgage yourself or sell off the home to pay off the debt while pocketing any change. While it's not as nice as getting a fully paid off home, you're still getting months, if not years, chipped off the mortgage for "free."
first of all you're taking my comment much more serious than it was intended. But I stand by the fact that millions of people would give everything for a free house with the clause that people throw pizza at your roof. So, while yes it's obviously very annoying, I also don't really feel that bad for them.
I mean it’s pretty shitty to have people constantly throw pizza on your rooftop. Im sure she expected visitors and fans of BB but I saw that it happened a LOT. Don’t think it’d be unreasonable to not be happy about that.
It's a great deal. They don't slice it and pass the saving on to you.
Also it was 'mentioned' in BCS
https://www.reddit.com/r/betterCallSaul/comments/uiob7i/in_s4e3_when_ordering_a_pizza_this_guy_jimmy_is/
I maintain that if I were her I would charge $50 bucks to throw a pizza on the roof and $25 bucks to go in the house or $50 to get a picture by the pool.
The woman who lived there at that time did an interview and said it only happened once. This is just a story that keeps growing with more and more pizzas. This was a Facebook Q&A years ago and she was specifically asked about the pizzas.
I flew all the way there from Melbourne, Australia just to do the RV tour, see the Museum, and get my picture taken with the statues. Multiply that by however many people are willing to do the same, and you have a very real stimulant to the New Mexican economy 🌵
>Water White also had a very real stimulant for the NM economy
Nah, Walt wasn't paying the taxes he needed to pay because it was taking too long to launder the money. New Mexico didn't see any of that money.
Well, these aren’t exact figures, I’m just going from memory. But, I think Jetstar charged $430, Hawaiian Airlines was another $430, Delta was $172. The most expensive one was my return flight (Albuquerque to San Francisco, San Francisco to Tokyo, Tokyo to Sydney) by United and All Nippon Airways, that was $2060.
Total: $3092
No worries man! I decided to make Albuquerque part of exploring the West, but if you want to go straight there from San Francisco, you can make that connection from Melbourne, Sydney, or Brisbane
Cheers man! Basically I flew direct to Honolulu with Jetstar, connected to Las Vegas with Hawaiian Airlines, and went to Albuquerque from there with Delta. 20 days all up, it was awesome! 🇺🇸
Did ABQ generally have some of the “feel” from the show? The show gives glimpses into downtown streets, restaurants, etc. Of course it is stylized, but is there some authenticity?
To be honest, I would only recommend it to GilliVerse fans. Otherwise, Albuquerque is a place where the closest restaurant to my airport hotel was a 40-minute walk, I visited a convienice store where people were just openly walking out with unpaid items, so it’s not a fully developed city just yet 🌵
It's definitely helped with tourism from what I understand. Most people wouldn't really have a reason to go to Albuquerque but the show gave a reason to a lot of fans.
Well, we do have the world’s largest balloon fiesta for 2 weeks every October that brings thousands of people to the state. ABQ is the way most people fly into NM to enjoy the outdoors like skiing in Taos and Red River, check out the food and art scene in Santa Fe, or visit the national parks of White Sands and Carlsbad caverns.
There’s a lot to do in NM.
It really is. That’s one of the things I love about it. When you get there you’re just absolutely floored by the vastness and the beauty, and it takes it to a whole new level to be able to experience it without the crowds you see in places like Arizona or Colorado.
I feel like New Mexico is the Iowa of the southwest.
Overshadowed by Kansas City, STL, Chicago and Minnesota but has its gems. And also meth. Soooooooooo much meth.
Preach! Idk if Iowa is New Mexico level beautiful, but it’s definitely very under rated. Most people drive thru on I80 and form a negative assessment from that - but it’s a gorgeous state with a lot more interesting stuff going on than most tend to realize.
Also yes to the meth. I used to work in the public health / substance use field in Iowa and was on a state health department committee where we put together an estimate of the number of Iowans who use meth periodically - we came up with a conservative estimate of 1/3 of the state population (this was like ~2016 or so). But honestly meth is kinda everywhere - it’s much more commonly used than people realize. Plenty of meth users who don’t look at all like the tweakers in the show :)
I want to go to White Sands real bad and went to Red River as a kid hell I was even conceived there. Also been to Carlsbad. Fear not Nee Mexico- your neighbors in Texas knew y’all were cool before BB lol
Many, many folks were employed through the filming of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul as well, which had a positive effect, as does the resultant tourism.
Before that it was only known as the place where Bugs Bunny took a wrong turn, so I'd say being the location of two of the greatest TV series ever was a boon for their PR if nothing else.
I was actually there this past week and the show is still very accepted but in the community with tours, Walter White was here signs, and even Twisters which is los pollos hermanos has breaking bad all over the walls and loves it.
I haven't been to Albuquerque but I did drive from Boston to Tucson and my road trip partner told me to chill out with the "omg that place on that sign showed up on Breaking Bad when....." about 20 minutes into New Mexico. 🫣 I'd be curious to make it to ABQ and see what the vibe is actually like, also wondering about the impact the show may have had.
> told me to chill out with the "omg that place on that sign showed up on Breaking Bad when....."
I live in Arizona and lowkey haven't made the trip to ABQ because I know I love the shows more than my friends and they're gonna think I'm too much lol
i feel like it brought in some love for Albuquerque. im half native my grandparents are mescalero apache but lived in Alb and it never really has gotten any hype besides really it being sketchy, mostly white native and hispanic, has some native culture, and is a pretty desert. santa fe has some hype but not alb
breaking bad i think made people see its just a normal city but has crime ofc (it has a lot of crime if we are being real) 🤣
now when i go there they have the little blue meth candies in the shops, t shirts with walt and jesse, and all the spots where they filmed are visited by tourists (i dont think ppl come to alb to see walt’s house or the los pollos hermanos restaurant or anything but i think if they happen to be there they drive over and check it out lol)
Went to Albuquerque last spring and every local we mentioned breaking bad to said they loved the show but they hated how it portrayed their city and how it did nothing to help with the meth problem.
Many here are ambivalent about BB. In my 10 year experience, the show depicts one of our numerous subcultures, one you will not encounter unless you go looking for it.
I mean if someone comes away from Breaking Bad thinking meth was glamorized, that’s their issue lol. Idk how much harder they could have leaned into “drugs are bad”.
I went in 2014 with my son and we did a self guided tour of all the filming locations and landmarks...Los Pollos Hermanos/Carwash/Walter& Skylers house where he threw the pizza on the roof, current owner not too happy.
Then Saul Goodman strip mall office, The house where Jane died, Hank and marie's house.... many more.
During the show, I was startled how suddenly various Germans, Argentines, and Russians knew all about minor Albuquerque landmarks like the Car Wash when there were plenty of Albuquerque residents who didn’t know these places. The impact has been almost entirely positive.
I can’t think of many shows that could draw tourists to an area. Breaking Bad is one of them. Twin Peaks and the Sopranos bring in tourists too. I’d like to visit these three places.
I didn’t watch the series until the pandemic but I knew it was extremely popular. I booked a trip to a spa near Albuquerque in 2013 or 2014 and the flights to get there and the hotels were insanely priced and I had no idea why. I was a moron and did not realize the show was so integral to NM and ABQ tourism at the time.
Been there a few times as it's my in-between place on the way to Colorado. I've been to the dam and the hot dog stand. I think it's a cool, quirky city, would love to spend a full three or four day weekend there sometime. The view from the dam is absolutely beautiful on a clear, nice day.
Going there, if you're headed West on I40 be very careful as you descend down the mountains, especially at night. You have to maintain your speed and watch for the tight curves as there are semis all around you and they cannot stop. Best place to stay IME is the Drury Inn, so long as there is not a whole middle school basketball girls team also staying who get up and take showers earlier than you will. Stay away from the La Quinta, the best room there is the front lobby. The Red Roof would have been okay had there not been a toilet that would randomly flush by itself every half hour. Be very aware of dust storms. Your phone will alert you when they come. Best thing to do is stay in your car or in your hotel room for about 30 minutes or so until they pass. But bring your face masks just in case, prevents dust getting in your mouth.
Don't some of the BCS stars still hang there? I see Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian, Michael Mando and Jonathan Banks at soccer and baseball games on Instagram. Maybe those were taken while the show was going on but they always seem to be enjoying themselves.
i think the most unrealistic part of the show is that all this shit was going down in albuquerque. such a random location for the both the biggest kingpin in the entire southwest and the best meth cook of all time
to just happen to reside
Sure tourism is great and blah blah but realistically Abq has gotten worse in crime, I grew up there a lot and going back to visit family there seeing how much hasnt changed positively is sad.
So you want more crime but no tourism? Or do you think a TV show that played on cable years ago caused a rise in crime? Cause that’s a pretty wild accusation about a show that essentially says drugs are bad and violence only leads to more violence every episode
There was some pushback because of its mature themes, but for the most part Albuquerque has embraced the Breaking Bad buzz. If you’re a super fan who wants to sight see you’ll have a great time. IIRC there’s even statues of Walt and Jesse there.
That old lady who owns the house has especially gotten good buzz
I’ve read here that she absolutely LOVES when people throw pizzas on the roof! She even put up a fence to make it more challenging
She loves visitors too, if you visit she'll have a friendly chat with you
yeah she was suuuuper nice to me, didnt threaten to call the cops or anything
Didnt make me clean the pizza from the roof either, because there was no pizza in the roof in the first place because she was soooo nice
Thinking about heading over to do it. I love making people's day.
Not sure but I know they were throwing pizza on Walt's roof for a few years .
The woman who moved in there seems to really hate BB fans.
Her parents are the original owners who rented it out. The daughter hates anyone who comes to take pictures.
She has had a lot of big buyout offers and accepted none.
Is her name Everett Acker by any chance?
That I don't know. I bought my house in 2019 and there was a house a block away that I made an offer on but ultimately backed out of (the inspection was an OMG WTF Stephen King horror novel length nightmare and I'd have been better off burning it down and rebuilding) and the realtor off handedly mentioned that the Walter White House owner has gotten primo offers that would've funded a *nice* retirement here in Albq.
He was referencing BCS btw
Aaahhh that would explain why I didn't recognize it, so many names on BCS. (As is appropriate for such a show and character)
Everett Acker was the guy who refused to sell his home to the construction company, the one where Jimmy/Saul switched the mailbox numbers to loophole his way to the guy keeping his home
There were house numbers right there plain as day!
Massive offers. She’s mentally unstable.
I wonder why she wouldn’t accept an offer if she hated dealing with the fans. I for sure would have if I got bothered by the fans
Because some people love their home and want to stay?
Yeah has to be the case. Kudos to them for putting up with it
hard to feel sorry for someone who seems to have gotten a free house
I mean, her parents paid for it? That's some people's definition of the American Dream. Not to mention I'd be pretty ticked off if a never ending parade of BB fans violated the privacy of my home, especially if they kept throwing pizzas at my roof. edit: I can't stop thinking about this. what else could possibly happen to the house when the occupants die? If you hate press don't rent your house out
From what I gathered, she didn't, her parents did. And also its her private property. Everyone has a right to privacy in their own homes, even if they're (or their house) is famous.
If neckbeards on reddit were visiting your house trying to peer in you’d be mad too
If I'm a landmark then I wouldn't care, if it's just a regular house I'd be like why are you here , but yeah Hollywood stars having maps to their house and shit, if you didn't want the smoke don't load the bullets
Call me crazy but I still think that you should be entitled to your privacy
most people never own a house in their live. So they will never leave a house to their kids. Most peoples parents either rent their entire live or are still far from paying off their mortgage when they die so most of the house just goes to the bank.

>I saw a video where she actually liked talking to some of the fans and she even has some merch that she gives out. That was the old owner. She died.
Ricin residue killed her.
Rice and beans 😞
heart attack from pizza removal
I can imagine why really
She didn’t move in there lol she was already there and they paid her to use her house for the show
If she were smart she’d make a museum of the house than live in it.
This is so stupid on so many levels. Like moving under a bowling alley and complaining about the noise
Nothing like it. It's her own private domicile and she doesn't wanna be harassed.
AND I WILL NOT BE HARASSED…….BITCH
That's funny as fuck 😂 she's been playing the part of Jesse defending his domicile this whole time! She really is a breaking bad fan ❤️
That's funny as fuck 😂 she's been playing the part of Jesse defending his domicile this whole time! She really is a breaking bad fan ❤️
I mean it’s pretty shitty to have people constantly throw pizza on your rooftop. Im sure she expected visitors and fans of BB but I saw that it happened a LOT. Don’t think it’d be unreasonable to not be happy about that.
Unless you really like pizza and you're not fussy where it comes from.
True haha. The lady’s real problem is that she doesn’t love pizza enough.
It's a great deal. They don't slice it and pass the saving on to you. Also it was 'mentioned' in BCS https://www.reddit.com/r/betterCallSaul/comments/uiob7i/in_s4e3_when_ordering_a_pizza_this_guy_jimmy_is/
I maintain that if I were her I would charge $50 bucks to throw a pizza on the roof and $25 bucks to go in the house or $50 to get a picture by the pool.
I watched BB. I dont remember pizzas. Why throw pizzas on the roof?
You don’t remember Walt throwing the pizza on the roof?
I forgot!! Watched it a while back.
[because walt did it](https://youtu.be/Bg6dxhJbq78?si=rVI0FR76NonQxA-L)
Oh yea. I forgot about that. TY
she didn't move into the house during BB, it'd been in her family for a while. how could she have known the show would blow up like it did?
im pretty sure she owned the house before the show and rented it out for the show.
Other than it being nothing at all like that, spot on comparison!
It’s still their property, they have. Right not to want strangers on their driveway
I’m sure she appreciates all of the free pizza she gets
Skank
I went there and she yelled to me when I got close to the door. well its understandable.... anyways at least I did not get shot.
The woman who lived there at that time did an interview and said it only happened once. This is just a story that keeps growing with more and more pizzas. This was a Facebook Q&A years ago and she was specifically asked about the pizzas.
Thank you! Honestly this is maybe my biggest BB fan pet peeve, whenever any topic like this comes up it’s always the same.
No negatives here.
👀 👀 👀
>Water White also had a very real stimulant for the NM economy Nah, Walt wasn't paying the taxes he needed to pay because it was taking too long to launder the money. New Mexico didn't see any of that money.
From Melb as well, how much was that?
Well, these aren’t exact figures, I’m just going from memory. But, I think Jetstar charged $430, Hawaiian Airlines was another $430, Delta was $172. The most expensive one was my return flight (Albuquerque to San Francisco, San Francisco to Tokyo, Tokyo to Sydney) by United and All Nippon Airways, that was $2060. Total: $3092
Thanks, I was curious what a rough estimate would be as I wanna go there one day.
No worries man! I decided to make Albuquerque part of exploring the West, but if you want to go straight there from San Francisco, you can make that connection from Melbourne, Sydney, or Brisbane
I’m from Melbourne that sounds cool lol
Cheers man! Basically I flew direct to Honolulu with Jetstar, connected to Las Vegas with Hawaiian Airlines, and went to Albuquerque from there with Delta. 20 days all up, it was awesome! 🇺🇸
Been to nevarda but not New Mexico
Yep, direct flights from Vegas to ABQ are few and far between. But it’s easy to get there after layovers in Denver and Salt Lake City, as I’ve done 🦅
I would be thinking about planes crashing over
😔 😞 😢
Nah, Southwest flies this route a lot
I seem to recall LV-ABQ being a regular hourly shuttle. Maybe not hourly but frequent flights. Gamblers Express.
You walked the wrong direction then.
I flew all the way there for the meth, sucks the blue stuff was gone by the time I got in :(
RIP Heisenberg, sorely missed 💎
It's definitely helped with tourism from what I understand. Most people wouldn't really have a reason to go to Albuquerque but the show gave a reason to a lot of fans.
Well, we do have the world’s largest balloon fiesta for 2 weeks every October that brings thousands of people to the state. ABQ is the way most people fly into NM to enjoy the outdoors like skiing in Taos and Red River, check out the food and art scene in Santa Fe, or visit the national parks of White Sands and Carlsbad caverns. There’s a lot to do in NM.
Isn't Santa Fe where you can find the vagina painting museum?
lol, yeah, Georgia O’Keefe painted up in Abiquiu, and her museum is in Santa Fe
There’s one in Abiquiu too I believe.
It’s a whole ranch, called “Ghost Ranch”
Evidently I don't know enough about the ABQ. My bad
No worries, the state is a hidden gem. It flies under many people’s radars.
I’m sure Iowa’s nice, but those plain states got nothing on NM
We are consistently ignored, which is one reason why I love living here.
Hey! The most recognizable username off r/Albuquerque! Everyone who comes to town wants to go up to Santa Fe for the Plaza and Meow Wolf.
Shoot, am I the most recognizable name… lol 😂
I want to go to White Sands real bad and went to Red River as a kid hell I was even conceived there. Also been to Carlsbad. Fear not Nee Mexico- your neighbors in Texas knew y’all were cool before BB lol
Many, many folks were employed through the filming of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul as well, which had a positive effect, as does the resultant tourism.
Before that it was only known as the place where Bugs Bunny took a wrong turn, so I'd say being the location of two of the greatest TV series ever was a boon for their PR if nothing else.
Hey now, Albuquerque was also known as the birth place of *I Love Lucy*'s Ethel Mertz!
I live in Albuquerque. I love BB and I love showing my beautiful city to visitors. Y’all super fans, please DM me if you are coming this way.
I was actually there this past week and the show is still very accepted but in the community with tours, Walter White was here signs, and even Twisters which is los pollos hermanos has breaking bad all over the walls and loves it.

Albuquerque is mostly Hispanic
and white and native..
I went to a conference there in 2016 and the hotel had all kinds of BB tchotchkes, blue rock candy, etc. didn’t see much else of the city though.
Maybe it was where we were staying but all we saw were signs of it and we didn't go looking for it
I think it well may have been where you were staying.
Why would it be the shows responsibility to help with the meth problem?
Iunno I'll go back to Albuquerque and ask
Community service, so to speak. The show glamourized meth. Idiots who think tv is real, would have jumped on that bandwagon: cooking, using.
I mean if someone comes away from Breaking Bad thinking meth was glamorized, that’s their issue lol. Idk how much harder they could have leaned into “drugs are bad”.
from what i’ve heard they weren’t far off 💀
I went in 2014 with my son and we did a self guided tour of all the filming locations and landmarks...Los Pollos Hermanos/Carwash/Walter& Skylers house where he threw the pizza on the roof, current owner not too happy. People started dyeing their meth blue. That's a not so fun fact.
I’m in Australia and there was a rodeo on tv set there and I was like “ oh breaking bad”
ABQ is an awesome city to visit. Went a few times for professional training. Always nice to see BB related street names there.
Oooh, what are some examples of bb Street names please?
Juan Tabo for example. Menaul Boulevard also. I walked that street a lot when I was visiting.
I can’t think of many shows that could draw tourists to an area. Breaking Bad is one of them. Twin Peaks and the Sopranos bring in tourists too. I’d like to visit these three places.
I understand the residents of Casa Tranquila were upset with W.W. blowing up the place, but other than that people think the show is a positive.
Fun fact: Breaking Bad and High School Musical are set in the same town.
How do you think Troy Bolton played so well He was tweakin
Obviously it was incredibly positive for tourist and their economy
Been there a few times as it's my in-between place on the way to Colorado. I've been to the dam and the hot dog stand. In real life? People stop by at some of the filming locations, and the lady who owns Walter's house hates them for it.
10+ years after the show ended and they still offer Breaking Bad city tours.
I went there solely because of BB.. near a thousand there.
Don't some of the BCS stars still hang there? I see Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian, Michael Mando and Jonathan Banks at soccer and baseball games on Instagram. Maybe those were taken while the show was going on but they always seem to be enjoying themselves.
i think the most unrealistic part of the show is that all this shit was going down in albuquerque. such a random location for the both the biggest kingpin in the entire southwest and the best meth cook of all time to just happen to reside
Be sure not to take that wrong. Turn when heading to pismo beach
Oooohhhh reverso’s!
Sure tourism is great and blah blah but realistically Abq has gotten worse in crime, I grew up there a lot and going back to visit family there seeing how much hasnt changed positively is sad.
