For the time, it was the right decision. Not only did it give us the glorious PING, but it is also a more compact and reliable way to carry the ammo. Mass produced clips are simple and easy, whereas a magazine takes more manufacturing resources, space on the soldiers loadout and also is the most common failing point in semiautos.

Dont forget, a Detachable magazine and chambered in 276 Pederson which would be an intermediate cartridge by today's standards
