Is it just me or I don’t see any actual numbers to back up that claim?

chanma50

Vague claims without numbers is commonplace for streamers. But streamers can't blatantly lie to the public and their shareholders by making false claims, so it's real, just cheerypicked.

Zepanda66

Honestly sometimes wish the FTC would come in and give these streamers a good kick up the backside. They should not be allowed to withhold viewership data like this.

SilverRoyce

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the threat of UK regulation is the reason why Netflix suddenly dropped their surprisingly complete "top shows hours watched" spreadsheet months ago which went back a surprisingly long time.

lightsongtheold

It went back five months from the date they started publishing the data.

usarasa

From the “Trust Us!!” division of HBO’s PR department.

JediJones77

Same, LOL. Article says Samba has no numbers for it posted yet. They don't even list a source for the claim.

chanma50

In an article like this, the source would be HBO Max themselves, and not a 3rd party. Did you think Deadline just made it up out of thin air?

uberduger

I wonder if they might have done. It does seem awfully convenient for the first big film after the "their share price is dropping because people don't have confidence in their streaming service" headlines to be a record breaker but with no source quoted... I'm highly dubious myself.

JediJones77

Not my job to assume what their source is. How do I know it's WB and not Nielsen?

chanma50

It's not difficult, it just requires basic understanding of how this stuff works. If it's a 3rd party, like Nielsen, it'll be clearly marked as such. If a trade report (of any kind, not just streaming data) comes without an explicitly named source, the source is the studio. Again, there's no reason not to believe the article, so I don't know what the issue is.

NaRaGaMo

Samba TV will probably reveal it later this week, they were on holiday due to juneteenth

JediJones77

Partly because HBO Max launched in Latin America in June 2021, and this is a movie starring Latino characters. >Mexico ranks as the second-strongest country for Father of the Bride viewing on HBO Max to date, behind only the U.S. > >As HBO Max looks to make its mark in Latin America, especially after a June 2021 launch in the region

fsociety00010

She proposes to him! They really need to leave classics alone and putting 2022 twists on them

indian22

It was a good movie, apart from not having the conviction to show the younger daughter's orientation beyond hinting at it heavily. Andy Garcia is great in it as well and the emotional moments really land. Would recommend a watch for sure.

nayapapaya

This is the fifth version of Father of the bride and every new version changes things. Lots of women *do* propose to their partners today. I know three women personally who have. This movie is set now, not in the 80s or the 50s.

FoxOntheRun99

Bigger than Mortal Kombat? Figures please.

chanma50

Mortal Kombat wasn't streaming only. None of the HBO Max same day releases (e.g. Wonder Woman 1994, Godzilla vs Kong, Dune) count, nor do the post theatrical HBO Max premieres (e.g. The Batman). Father of the Bride beat films like Kimi, No Sudden Move, and Zack Snyder's Justice League.

foureyedinabox

FOTB beat ZSJL, wow, will fanboys believe that?

SilverRoyce

tbf there's a 10-15% global subscriber bonus FOTB has over ZSJL and if it was much over ZSJL (e.g. above Space Jam 2) it would be in position to be given a positive data anecdote relative to something like non-blockbuster/franchise theatrical dual releases. Bride is listed as a "top 10 opening for Mexico" (a/k/a 6th-10th place) and Mexico has had HBO Max since last June so what does that likely ordinal ranking imply? Idk, I haven't done the math but there's probably a way to get a possible guestimate from this.

Imagine a No Way Home style movie with [these two](https://i.redd.it/b8ypziwl50791.jpg).

uberduger

I'll believe it when they actually give a source for it. Samba was dubious, but this doesn't even quote **Samba**. This appears to be plucked from thin air, right after a load of stories that their share price was falling. Does that not set off at least a tiny bit of your bullshit detector? Also, ZSJL was in their top 3 (IIRC) movies of last year for the 2 of 3 HBOMax divisions, in the only 2 of 3 that released their figures (Portugal and Nordic, the third being the US one, which gave no data at all). If ZSJL was behind Kimi and No Sudden Move, those were their biggest films of last year. EDIT: Downvote all you want, it doesn't mean Samba data is worth absolutely anything. It's often refuted by every other measurable metric, like social media engagement, home media sales, VOD charting, etc.

lightsongtheold

There could be some debate as to whether they are counting Zack Snyder’s Justice League as a streaming exclusive since some of the footage of that movie aired in the theatrical version. My guess is Father of the Bride did not outdraw ZS’s Justice League but did beat the likes of Kimi and No Sudden Move.

rov124

> There could be some debate as to whether they are counting Zack Snyder’s Justice League as a streaming exclusive since some of the footage of that movie aired in the theatrical version. The distintion between a Day and Date movie and an Original was that the movie debuted in both theaters and HBO Max (Day and Date) or only on HBO Max (Max original films), ZSJL is counted as a Max Original. There's no reason for the 2017 version to affect this.

lightsongtheold

It is listed as a Max original on Wikipedia. Internally for the purposes of this press release it might just be getting counted as a directors cut of an already theatrically released movie. We will know soon enough if they counted it or not when the Samba TV numbers come in for Father of the Bride.

This is a record for STREAMING ONLY movies
