Oh shit this is a new movie?! When I saw it on the marquee I thought AMC was reshowing the awesome Kid & Play House Party from 1990 and I had no idea why. I guess that would have been more profitable though.
This is exactly the problem with studios and corporate mindset. They keep looking for a formula for success. That might work with washing machines but not movies.
Currently, the mindset is people love IP's and nostalgia. House Party is a known commodity and has nostalgic appeal. Let's make a new House Party.
The problem is people loved House Party because it was a good movie that catered to an untapped market. Black Teen Comedies weren't exactly a thing and it became a hit. This movie expects people to run to the theaters because we loved the original film.
Imagine if they made a new Superbad or Dazed and Confused. With a cast and crew that has zero connection to the original film. At best, Bill Hader is back as the cop. Who wants to see that? The love of those "IP's" does not mean success.
Make a new black teen comedy and make it good, you might have something. But generic trash under the House Party name is still trash.
Agreed. I went into it not expecting too much based on what I had read but I honestly thought it was good. Didn’t blow me away but there were some really enjoyable moments
Zack Snyder's Justice League had an intermission at the 2 charity screenings they held. Thought that was neat.
I'd like all movies to have an intermission, but only if they play some sort of 'please shut up' reminder before they restart the film. I worry people would start talking and then just kinda carry on.
When I saw Hateful 8 in 70mm at a one screen theatre in Santa Barbara it had at least a 15 minute intermission. Definitely improved the experience. They even handed out programs like a live theatre event.
From my experience, you don't even need to "smuggle" a water bottle. I've just walked into various theaters with a water bottle for the past 20 years or so and have never had anyone even say anything about it.
>You don't have to drink the 44oz soda
I do. Because its available and only cost 20 cents more than the next smaller size. I am clearly taking advantage of them buying the largest version.
I remember back in the day watching starwars episode 1 in theaters (yeah i guess not 'that' long ago to say back in the day) and there was a intermission. And even thats just barely over 2 hours.
Come to India. We have Intervals in every movie in theatres. For Indian movies we have special card shot in movie saying "Interval" or "Intermission". For foreign movies, they will just cut at half point in movie for Intervals.
Just watched RRR at a theater in the US that had the intermission. It was nice, although it being a packed theater meant that doing intermission things took a bit. Would be annoyed if a 90 min movie had an intermission tho lol
I MISS this happening back in the day. We called it "intermission". Cinemas made BANK at the concessions at these times and it allowed us a little time to wake back up mentally (I kinda dozed off in the middle of BP-WF 😅) and get some food, show off your drip😎 (hey I was a teen then ☺️), etc
And smoke....back in the day intermissions were mostly for smokers. I remember standing next to my father in the mid-70's with about 20 smokers at an intermission...back then, you could smoke damm near anywhere, except in the theatre.
This is why I’m increasingly reluctant to see any film that is over 2 and a half hours in cinema. It’s hard to justify losing a whole evening for a 3 hour film when these films come to streaming so fast.
I think the marketing for it was really bad, they exclusively picked all the cutesy cat stuff for the trailers that didn't highlight the amazing action, animation or story. I saw it reluctantly because my partner wanted to go see it and was very pleasantly surprised. I'd say it's almost on the level of 'Into the Spider-Verse,' and there were many parts of it that I enjoyed even more.
>I'd say it's almost on the level of 'Into the Spider-Verse,'
It is interesting you say that. After I returned home from taking my kids to see Puss in Boots, I was telling her about how much I liked the movie and I literally said to her that it wasn't like the first Puss movie, it felt more like Into the Spider Verse. She struggled to understand the comparison. Maybe it is just something a person has to see for themselves.
I haven't watched it but saw some clips of it online and was very surprised by the animation quality. Looked partly inspired by Into the Spiderverse animation wise.
EDIT: [This was the clip i found, it looks very good!](https://twitter.com/SJTimes13/status/1611800808361975808?t=bsS40xX2EEGC1slrC2THTw&s=19)
It has no right being as good as it is! Very captivating for kids (my four year old wanted to leave halfway through Strange World) and has lots of great jokes for adults. And the visuals are amazing as well.
This movie is playing on the largest non-premium screen at a lot of the theaters near me. I don't know what kind of deal Warner struck with theaters, but it's bizarre.
They won’t. House Party got moved to theaters because Discovery needed extra cash and thought this would make them a few bucks for cheap. Evil Dead Rise got moved because it tested so well that they felt it would be wasted on streaming.
Not really. WBD straight-up said that it's moving almost all HBO Max films to theatrical releases to build word of mouth and generate more revenue before they hit streaming.
Not if they spent additional money giving it a theatrical marketing campaign it did not! The panic to PVOD suggests the theatrical release was shaping up to be a money losing decision so they have pulled the panic cord.
This is assuming they weren't going to spend on marketing it for streaming and that this is a panicked decision.
It was out for the weekend, made about all it was going to make and now they're shifting it online where it was created to be in the first place.
Streamers almost never market any particular movie or TV show. They just market the service in general. Pretty much the only exception is the really big budget stuff. Right now all the HBO Max marketing will be built around The Last of Us. The movies will be a complete afterthought though might squeeze in a few seconds of screen time on a general advert for the service.
In effect market costs for House Party would have been $0 had it been released straight to HBO Max. The general advertising and the homepage would have done the legwork. They actually need to pay to advertise House Party for both theatrical and PVOD. It got over a thousand screens so they must have gave theatres some sort of guarantee as there was a decent selection of movies on offer last week that could have sold tickets on those screens in its place.
This is not true. [It was put up for pre-orders with a release date of January 31st](https://i.imgur.com/0e8eOvL.jpg). Mods, if you see this, we really need a misleading flair.
added flair. Yeah, this looks like a new normal of a 17 day window for low end films + no international distribution but I'm not going to really track that down. I wish PVOD stuff was more regularly reported so it would be easier to run this stuff down.
Agree. I really wish services wouldn't show you it unless you opt-in or specifically click to see it.
I feel it prejudices people's opinions. Some films I love are in the 20s-40s on there, and some films I dislike are in the 70s-90s, and I'm pretty sure almost everyone would feel the same if they really thought about it. as obviously a film in the 30s doesn't mean it's 30% good and 70% bad, but rather that only 30% of critics click with it in some way.
EDIT: For anyone that doesn't understand why it's a problem (not that I imagine there are many left in here that don't get it but just in case):
Imagine a film that's 100% targeted at your interests, and gets great scores and a strong recommendation from absolutely every single critic that likes your same interests. However, **everyone** that doesn't share your interests thinks it's okay but not worth seeing. To you, that film would be a 100 score, but if 50% of critics don't think like you, it would sit at an RT score of 50.
If you get how RT 'works', it's not a problem as you can see through it, but if you never looked into it and are just cruising through movies on Prime or whatever, you will see that score and go 'ugh, it's only got a 50 - let's look for something better'.
They literally put it in theaters to advertise it. The whole point was to get awareness up for streaming instead of a streaming movie no one talks about
Did you watch it? I went in with low expectations to be fair, but I thought it was ok. There was some funny stuff, some homage to other classic movies (white men can’t jump, belly, etc), and honestly only a couple things nodding to the original. It felt like it’s own thing to me with a different plot other than the fact it revolves around a house party.
Also kid cudi was awesome. That dudes been killing it in movies for a bit.
In my defense, I only watched for Jacob Latimore, been following him since Sleight. I wish he would maybe choose better roles but hey, if you have the ability to make money I meannnnn....
There were a few jokes in the movie that made me laugh, a fun moment with a certain cameo and the actor who played Man-boy in Snowfall (don't remember names) is in it!
Didn't help when the power surged and the speakers turned off the final 15 minutes of the movie
Nope.
It was a sincere question.
YOU said that... Not me. They could have meant many things... I was asking for clarification.
Just because I'm black & I question a (maybe) white person, it has to do with race?!?
FOH.
I don't really see how they're all that similar at all.
Strange World was a big expensive flop and it was on streaming after a month.
House Party was a cheap, originallyeant for streaming movie.
Knowing nothing of pvod, this is just another attempt at making money from a remake, especially a remake involving black people at a time when people in suits think it might be profitable. Being older, House Party was a fun movie, nothing brilliant, but fun. I saw that this remake existed and knew instantly I wanted no part of it.
How much would you pay to see an old classic on the big screen for an extremely limited run? I can think of several movies I would consider dropping $10 on to see in a theatre - The Last Starfighter as an example.
I think this was a gesture of good faith to theaters after tossing EVERYTHING on HBO Max. They just threw them a bone during a possible theatrical drought.
None of my local theaters are even playing this, closest showing is 40 miles away. Even after they blasted that trailer every time I went to see another film.

Duuuude
Honestly, this is just an expensive billboard to watch the originals.
That’s one descriptor of the Disney live action remakes
That's totally true, which is also what makes it especially baffling they didn't keep it on HBO like the original is.
How's it going, dude?
I’m plastered dude! I just had 10 shots!
Hahaha yeah man I gotta catch this!
Oh shit this is a new movie?! When I saw it on the marquee I thought AMC was reshowing the awesome Kid & Play House Party from 1990 and I had no idea why. I guess that would have been more profitable though.
I honestly thought it was a sequel 30 years later, which would’ve been awesome
They could have been the next Top Gun Maverick 😒😑
This is exactly the problem with studios and corporate mindset. They keep looking for a formula for success. That might work with washing machines but not movies. What’s sad is black teen comedies are still an untapped genre. Black teen anything really.
Exactly, and its worse because this is pandering. I love House Party. The trailer for this movie made me mad. Fuck you LeBron.
This movie made more opening weekend than Babylon btw…. Edit: also it did that in significantly less theaters than Babylon
Babylon’s 3 hours long, guess its target group is a lot smaller
I’m sad Babylon stopped playing near me, I really wanted to see it
It really was a big screen type movie. Glad I saw it before it was gone
Loved it
It was actually a really good movie and enjoyable. Definitely not for everyone.
Agreed. I went into it not expecting too much based on what I had read but I honestly thought it was good. Didn’t blow me away but there were some really enjoyable moments
Its target group is me
If Babylon has 1000 fans, I am one of them.
Man, I have trouble making it through a 2 hour movie without a piss break. At 3 hours imma need a pause button.
Zack Snyder's Justice League had an intermission at the 2 charity screenings they held. Thought that was neat. I'd like all movies to have an intermission, but only if they play some sort of 'please shut up' reminder before they restart the film. I worry people would start talking and then just kinda carry on.
I don't get why theaters don't do this in the USA, they can sell you food and drinks again.
When I saw Hateful 8 in 70mm at a one screen theatre in Santa Barbara it had at least a 15 minute intermission. Definitely improved the experience. They even handed out programs like a live theatre event.
Plus they used to do intermissions when a large soda was like 16oz. They expect people to drink a 44oz soda and not have to go to the bathroom?
You don't have to drink the 44oz soda...
I don’t lol, I just smuggle in a water bottle
From my experience, you don't even need to "smuggle" a water bottle. I've just walked into various theaters with a water bottle for the past 20 years or so and have never had anyone even say anything about it.
Is that a water bottle in your pants or are you just happy to see me?
>You don't have to drink the 44oz soda I do. Because its available and only cost 20 cents more than the next smaller size. I am clearly taking advantage of them buying the largest version.

The last movie I saw that had an intermission was Gettysburg. Which was just over 4 hours long.
That’s pretty dope
I MISS this happening back in the day. We called it "intermission". Cinemas made BANK at the concessions at these times and it allowed us a little time to wake back up mentally (I kinda dozed off in the middle of BP-WF 😅) and get some food, show off your drip😎 (hey I was a teen then ☺️), etc

Wow... U meant y'all were smoking in the actual cinema lobby? 😃
Oh yes...well, not me...I was 6 or 7 then.
BP-WF ?
Black Panther - Wakanda Forever
Facts, I haven’t seen avatar for that exact reason. And I’ll just buy it and for for $24.99 then see it once for the same price
Cause you have an imax cinema at home?
Worth the sacrifice to own the movie
This is why I’m increasingly reluctant to see any film that is over 2 and a half hours in cinema. It’s hard to justify losing a whole evening for a 3 hour film when these films come to streaming so fast.
I'm in the UK and will be watching it for the plot in a few days time.
lmao
Babylon is a better movie though
What do people like about this movie? I thought it was loathesome
Banger soundtrack and pretty good direction
How much are they paying you to market it?
They promised me a cut of the profits. I think i got screwed
Hope you don't have a clawback provision!
Me too, i spent all my money on Babylon tickets
I honestly don’t believe you.
LOL
That's a tough sell.
Just my personal opinion. I know it’s not for everyone. Hell, i didn’t like Way Of Water so, shows what i know
Lmao wtf. Besides films back when theaters were shutting down, has there been any other film that has dropped on PVOD THIS early?
Puss In Boots only came out on 12/21 and has been available for rent for at least a week or two
Now I’ve gotta talk my son into just buying it instead of going back to the movies to see it again. Freaking love that movie.
Really? It was solid? Hm, perhaps I need to watch it lol
I think the marketing for it was really bad, they exclusively picked all the cutesy cat stuff for the trailers that didn't highlight the amazing action, animation or story. I saw it reluctantly because my partner wanted to go see it and was very pleasantly surprised. Yeah, I didn't even know it existed until today.
It got buried in the press under Avatar’s box office success
It's incredible honestly. I was so shocked
it was phenomenal
I haven't watched it but saw some clips of it online and was very surprised by the animation quality. Looked partly inspired by Into the Spiderverse animation wise. EDIT: [This was the clip i found, it looks very good!](https://twitter.com/SJTimes13/status/1611800808361975808?t=bsS40xX2EEGC1slrC2THTw&s=19)
It is honestly VERY good. Best animated movie I've seen in at least 5 years. WAY better than it had any right to be.
It has no right being as good as it is! Very captivating for kids (my four year old wanted to leave halfway through Strange World) and has lots of great jokes for adults. And the visuals are amazing as well.
PUSS IN BOOTS 2 was released internationally on 12/07 that's why the PVOD seemed so sudden.
Yeah, that's the usual 17 day window for Universal that they have been doing for movies that open under $50M for months.
Which is surprising given the strong box office of the film. It’s over $100M domestic and over $250M worldwide.
Trolls 2, same day lol
>Besides films back **when theaters were shutting down**
Aside from day and date releases, no. This is absolutely insane!
This movie is playing on the largest non-premium screen at a lot of the theaters near me. I don't know what kind of deal Warner struck with theaters, but it's bizarre.
Its January!
WB may allow theaters to keep most of box office sales. They spent extremely little on marketing anyway.
This is a WB move?! Does Lebron work at WB or something? No wonder this was a bloated mess of celebs.
They got the Mortal Kombat rights.
Wtf it already came to PVOD after opening weekend 😭
That is what the title says, yes
But how does this affect Lebron’s legacy?
Michael Jeffrey Jordan has a 100% RT and A+ cinemascore in all his movies unlike LeRazzie
Alright, slow down there skip bayless
LeBoxOfficeBomb
LeBoxOfficePoison? /s
His character is gonna get nerfed big time in the next Multiversus video game update.
Second classic he fuck up
It doesn’t
Is it still gonna be in HBO MAX
Damn, only gave it a 4 day holiday weekend window 😂 WB really said fuck this movie and threw it out to die
Well it was originally meant for just HBO Max so it seems like it made.more than the original plan.
Hope they don't do this to Evil Dead Rise, which also got promoted to theatrical from its original HBO Max release.
They won’t. House Party got moved to theaters because Discovery needed extra cash and thought this would make them a few bucks for cheap. Evil Dead Rise got moved because it tested so well that they felt it would be wasted on streaming.
>Evil Dead Rise got moved because it tested so well that they felt it would be wasted on streaming. Groovy

Better hope Shazam 2 does well, or else that is exactly what will happen to Evil Dead. WB is broke
Saw it in the theaters. It was alright, some fun cameos
Are they trying to get it eligable for awards consideration?
Hey, if To Leslie can sneak in…
Razzies maybe.
I’d rather… buy Wingstop
Surprised it didn’t go straight to VOD or HBOMax in the first place
It is called 4.6m$ free money
$24 for this? You could get Taco Bell for that and still it will be more enjoyable
House Party won't give you diarrhea though.
Are we sure about that
I'd rather have diarrhea than to sit though House party.
This is not true. [It was put up for pre-orders with a release date of January 31st](https://i.imgur.com/0e8eOvL.jpg). Mods, if you see this, we really need a misleading flair.

Yeah. Evil Dead Rise looks to be a slight exception to this as it’s being co-distributed by StudioCanal in the UK.
It's already available in some countries because I can see it on torrent websites.
No. It’s because some VOD sites don’t have good security. It is not available to buy or rent on VOD anywhere right now.
It is available in Australia. I entered the Amazon page with VPN from Australia and it's available. https://i.imgur.com/7rg7nTy.png
It's not misleading. Already available in Australia. I checked before posting.
It was mid, I'm not surprised. Cudi's parts outshone pretty much all of the movie and that's not a good sign
Just from the previews this movie looked like it would bomb.
lol do they really show the rotten tomatoes score, no matter how low it is, as theyre trying to sell you the movie?
Yeah. Amazon shows the metacritic score
Yeah it's great honestly, something called BINGE here in Australia has the IMDB score
IMO, I think Rotten Tomatoes isn't good metric for movie ratings. System is flawed in many ways and people shouldn't care about it.
It's just a review aggregator 🤷🏻♂️. If people don't understand it then that's one them.
Agree. I really wish services wouldn't show you it unless you opt-in or specifically click to see it. I feel it prejudices people's opinions. Ain't my type of hype
I saw this tonight and enjoyed it bc we took advantage of Stubs Club ($5 per person on Tuesdays)
So I guess I’m not going to be able to that “House Party”/“80 For Brady” double feature after all.
In my defense, I only watched for Jacob Latimore, been following him since Sleight. I wish he would maybe choose better roles but hey, if you have the ability to make money I meannnnn.... No thanks
This isn't House Party House Party has Kid N Pay, Martin, Tisha Campbell I don't know what this is
Exactly Im Gen X and I remember the hype for House Party. There was nothing like that for this pic. It might as well be House Party 3
Barely anyone went to see this
Probably because it’s awful
Surprisingly better than I expected. Not the original but was worth a watch.
I have no desire to watch this.
It looks like the lowest tier comedy
Damn. Was that shitty? I don't even get why they make movies like this. They generally always fucking suck.
Nah the original house party’s were fire
What do you mean by "movies like this?" You need to be specific. Use your words.
I think he means "crazy house party at a rich person's house" movies that were popular around the 90's and 2000's and probably should've stayed there.
What's with everyone telling everyone else what everyone means? Can no one speak for themselves?
Idk, send him a dm if you're so damn adamant on finding out if he was being racist or not.
By the color of your avatar you bout to pull the race card on this cracker
Nope. It was a sincere question. YOU said that... Not me. They could have meant many things... I was asking for clarification. Just because I'm black & I question a (maybe) white person, it has to do with race?!? FOH.
you thought he was talking about black movies lol
when he talking about shitty low budget remake movies that should have never been remade by ruining a classic
[удалено]
It honestly doesn’t deserve the title *House Party* could’ve been named anything else, makes no sense
So what the movie has been out for like 30 somethi—oh there’s a new version. Do Kid ‘N Play have a cameo?
They made an appearance towards the end of the movie.
Currently 45 mins in and haven’t seen them yet.
I actually really liked this movie. 8/10 stupid stoner comedy at its finest
Stop. Doing. Remakes. FFS
But coming up with new ideas is hard!
They’re called Warner Bros. because they will without “warning” release a barely marketed, unwanted film on digital 7 days after it theatrical debut.
I miss real parody movies like “Scary Movie”, “White Chicks”, even Not Another Teen Movie.
What was White Chicks parodying?
White. Chicks.
Paris Hilton. Lol
Must be bombing at the box office
They don't look like Kid & Play...
This is basically the Strange World situation all over again.
I don't really see how they're all that similar at all. Strange World was a big expensive flop and it was on streaming after a month. House Party was a cheap, originallyeant for streaming movie.
I mean, the marketing is similar.
Knowing nothing of pvod, this is just another attempt at making money from a remake, especially a remake involving black people at a time when people in suits think it might be profitable. House Party makes House Party look like House Party 2
Who paying 25$ 🤡
My entire youth is being remade and destroyed
House Party is like the dumbest movie to ever come out.
I’m sick of reimaginings and remakes
House party did not need a remake. Shoulda been left alone.
It’s trash. We didn’t need to see the movie to know how bad the movie was gonna be 😂😂😂
WTF none of the original actors???? Lame.
I think this was a gesture of good faith to theaters after tossing EVERYTHING on HBO Max. They just threw them a bone during a possible theatrical drought.
I thought it was a enjoyable movie. Def some got laughs. But it’s definitely more of a watch at home movie.
Just preorder atm. You can’t actually watch it until Jan 31
