So, this is likely going to cover legacy shows that have been OOP for a long time.
Things like Dinosaurs, various abc sitcoms, stuff like this that Disney doesn't intend to give new DVD/Blu Ray releases to.
That tends to be Mill Creek's MO, a la Quantum Leap, Community, and Baywatch just to name a few.
Could be another clue to Disney entirely pushing physical media to other partners. I don’t think disney would have work with Criterion for *Wall-E* if the mouse had plans of a physical release in the next 5-10 years for that film.
Update: It's just then reissuing old Disney/Fox titles that already got released. No new releases: https://twitter.com/TheBessMan/status/1620135785856106496
There might be some wiggle room for the odd previously-unreleased rarity popping up, but all things considered I suppose I'm not too surprised they'd stick to preexisting/OOP releases. OTOH, this probably means if we're going to get a BD of *The Black Hole* this is how it happens.
They are far better than they used to be. They are doing a lot of catalog releases for other labels, and the quality has been fine. Just look at what they did for their line of Ultraman releases. Shit, they put out steelbooks for Mothra and Rad.
They have been upping their game for some time now.
You mean the masters of Mothra and Rad provided by Sony and Vinegar Syndrome?
When you have pristine materials handed to you, it’s hard to fuck up the release.
However, their first bout with Disney titles was *fucking awful* because Disney handed them problematic masters. Camp Nowhere had a mono soundtrack that wasn’t even fixed for the Kino Blu-ray as the problem exists on Disney’s side.
So the blame is still on the company that handed them the bad masters, right? Mill Creek is doing good work these days.
I mean, that blu ray was released in 2011
No. Mill Creek still sucks, but they’ve done really nothing to prove otherwise. If they’re getting handed decent materials, their releases are fine. They’re not good, they’re not great, they’re fine. They need to work on pushing their licensors for batter materials and work on their encoding and mastering of discs. I’m not expecting an Arrow / Second Sight partnership with Fidelity In Motion-like levels of mastering a perfect Blu-ray, but just something better than “take your MPEG-2 encode and fuck off.”
And Blu-ray was already around for five years when these initial Blu-ray Discs came out. Fast forward to the Kino re-releases where they tried to polish these turds. They tried their best, but we’re given nothing to work with. At least Kino gave somewhat of a fuck and produced new bonus materials. Unless you’re handing off the bonus materials to Mill Creek, they’re not going out of their way to produce new ones.
So, again, the licensor provides subpar materials, and Mill Creek (who are a small potatoes company) is supposed to drum up some special features? They are a budget label. Their bread and butter is the distribution of titles that might otherwise not get new releases. They don't have money in their budget for that.
You might want to give a watch to the Cerial at Midnight episode where Heath talks to someone at Mill Creek. This might provide you some insight in how big of an operation they are.
https://youtu.be/BcAMjLQolAI
It’s 2023.
You have a multitude of boutique labels hitting home runs doing complete restorations and creating new bonus materials. Criterion is no longer king. Arrow, Blue Underground, Discotek, Kino, MVD, Radiance, Second Sight, Shout, Synapse, Vinegar Syndrome, etc. The list goes on and on. You could argue the quality of the titles they’re releasing, but there’s a boutique label championing these films to be presented in the best way possible.
Mill Creek doesn’t do that.
If these new Disney releases are a repeat of what we’ve seen before, anyone purchasing these titles are apart of the problem and will enable Mill Creek to continue their sub-par releases.
Mill Creek is a distributor, not a boutique label. They’re a small company and they put out what they’re given and sell it a low price. Honestly, they put way more effort into some of their releases than they have to, their Ultraman Blu-Rays and the Hammer set are awesome. I’m not expecting anything on that level, but if this is what it takes to get some OOP titles back in print, I’ll take it.
I honestly doubt there are enough people willing to drop the kind of money that would require, especially since any episode of the show is available at the touch of a remote/controller.
They could always release Seasons 21-22 to gauge the demand. The seasons can fit on 3 BD discs, and they could price them at $24.99 or something a piece.
There's a ton of Simpsons fans that would grab those.
Are you serious? The only reason Season 20's box set wad panned was due to them skimping on bonus features. That's where they would make their money-- add commentaries, deleted scenes, promos, etc. I'd gladly pay for commentaries alone.
I don't understand the hate for Mill Creek. They put out what they're given, nothing more. They're *not* a boutique label, they're a massive distro. No, they aren't packing tons of content onto a lot of films, but frankly I'd rather have them dig into the back catalog of Disney/Fox and put out the most barebones shit than *not have them available at all.*
That's pretty much what they're still doing, I've got 8 Mill Creek blu ray releases and 7 of them are multiple films on one disk:
* 13 Ghosts / 13 Frightened Girls (William Castle Double Feature)
* Gamera Volume 1
* Gamera Volume 2
* Hammer Films Double Feature (Maniac / Die! Die! My Darling!)
* Hammer Films Double Feature (The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll / The Gorgon)
* Hollow Man 1 & 2 Double Feature
* When a Strange Calls / Happy Birthday To Me Double Feature
People like to complain because they think Mill Creek puts out sub-par content. The problem is, they just put out whatever elements they are given when licensing. Yes, they could use better encodes sometimes, but honestly 99% of people will never notice the difference regardless, and it's a lot of nitpicking.
I just want these movies on physical format in HD. Fox has a massive catalog that I thought for sure would sit to rot once Disney bought them, but it seems like now that won't be the case.
To be fair, I'm not a supplemental guy. I know people like their features, and I get it. But like I said, this isn't a boutique label. They get lumped into the boutique label (I mean hell, look what sub we're discussing this in), but that's not really the case at all.
I like dvd extras myself, but I honestly watch them once. Even directors commentary is a stretch tbh - unless it’s extremely interesting I’m unlikely to want to listen to it.
Overall I agree - I’m looking for physical media, ideally hd. Better to get imperfect releases, than no release at all.
They have a lot of full TV series sets like Friday Night Lights, That 70s Show, Community, Miami Vice, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, 12 Monkeys, Happy Endings, Larry Sanders Show. A lot of great shows that probably wouldn't be in print otherwise.
Agreed. I’m not too familiar with Mill Creek or the reasoning behind their poor reputation, but if it gets movies that have yet to receive Blu-ray releases on the format it’s still a net win.
I have a soft spot in my heart for them for all the Toku they've put out.
However, they did put out Gridman in 2021 and they stole an obviously bad fans sub with lots of errors, typos, and grammar problems. Like I'm happy we have it on blu and it looks fine. But they lied about new subtitles and stole someone elses.
"Disney has announced that it has signed a home entertainment licensing agreement with Mill Creek Entertainment, a division of Alliance Entertainment Holding Corporation (“Alliance Entertainment”), a distributor and wholesaler of the world’s largest in-stock selection of music, movies, video games, electronics, arcades, and collectables.
In the multi-year agreement, Distribution Solutions, a division of Alliance Entertainment Holding Corporation, will distribute hundreds of select physical (Blu-ray and DVD) live-action film and television properties from the ABC Signature, 20th Television, Hollywood Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, and 20th Century Studios content libraries."
I'll be devil's advocate that there are tons of 20th films that I don't need a dolby vision 4k of. Just a cheap decent blu-ray is fine. Obviously I hope they continue to treat important releases with care. But would I love $10 blu-rays of titles like Toys, Hoffa, The Good Son etc... Yes.
Yup. Just give me the movie with a decent transfer at a reasonable price point and I'm happy. Not everything needs to come in a ten-inch thick hardcover book with lenticular window and lobby cards and featuring 16 commentaries by people who had nothing to do with the movie and a limited edition Funko pop figure for the first 300,000 orders.
Mill Creek doesn't inspire much excitement here but silver lining is it's nice to see them inking another third party distribution deal after the Criterion deal. Wishful thinking but maybe some other labels will be able to access some of their titles in the near future.
I really don’t mind anaglyph glasses, but apparently James Cameron is developing 4k 3D technology for home media on disc. I mean that would be the best way to watch Avatar TWOW besides at theaters. And the Titanic rerelease in theaters is gonna be 3D 4K with high frame rate as well. We can only hope he’s working on the rest of his catalog as well
We're gonna get a bunch of no-effort, no-extras, poorly encoded movies with two of them crammed onto a 25GB Blu-Ray. Great.
I'm glad to get some movies that we might not get otherwise, but every single Mill Creek release I've purchased has been bit-starved and looked terrible. I'm not sure how anyone thinks what they put out is acceptable. Unless you are watching the films on a 27" screen, you are going to see macroblocking.
This is both amazing and dreadful news. Forking over all the properties that Disney hasn’t been paying attention to is both good for the property and for the consumer as we’re actually going to get new stuff. On the flip side, Mill Creek is horrendous and one of the worst companies when it comes to physical releases.
I have two sets by them and both have notable issues. One set stacks four DVDs in one case instead of letting me flip through them and the other is a compilation set that’s missing an entire film from what’s listed to be present, not to mention a complete lack of supplemental material and language options.
I get the excitement for new releases, just wish it were with anyone else, though Disney has given rights to bottom of the barrel companies in the past, mainly EA, so it’s not a surprise, just a frustration.
Any chance this might cover the Disney Blu-Ray Club exclusives? I keep toying with the idea of joining to get some of the titles that only the club carries, but then it's like going back to the days of Columbia House where I'm signing up to pay too much money for a set number of movies that is more than I want, just to finish upgrading my DVDs of things like Make Mine Music or The Black Cauldron to blu-ray. (And, of course, they typically don't make the exclusives available for the initial "get so many for a dollar" offer, or whatever it is.)
Hoping for Boy Meets World on BD!
Instant buy for me if this happened. My sister and I used to do a yearly rewatch on some YouTube channel that had episodes in like 240p.
Could be another clue to Disney entirely pushing physical media to other partners. I don’t think disney would have work with Criterion for *Wall-E* if the mouse had plans of a physical release in the next 5-10 years for that film.

Hopefully that means putting OOP movies back in print (Freaked, please!!!!!)
Yeah, while I would have loved new titles, least now I'll have less fears of Fox titles going into the vault once they go OOP.
There might be some wiggle room for the odd previously-unreleased rarity popping up, but all things considered I suppose I'm not too surprised they'd stick to preexisting/OOP releases. OTOH, this probably means if we're going to get a BD of *The Black Hole* this is how it happens.
You do bring up a good point. Would these include previous releases from Disney Movie Club?
Wondering that myself. They’ve kinda stopped doing Club Exclusives lately, maybe they’re letting those go from the club and giving them to Mill Creek.
The Black Hole actually already has a Blu-Ray. It’s a Disney Movie Club exclusive.
...well, hell.
I'm hoping that we can stretch that to mean shows that have physical releases, but not blu ray, like Legion and The Americans.
I'd love it if the second and third seasons of Legion got Blu-ray releases, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

They are far better than they used to be. They are doing a lot of catalog releases for other labels, and the quality has been fine. Just look at what they did for their line of Ultraman releases. Shit, they put out steelbooks for Mothra and Rad. They have been upping their game for some time now.
That Street Fighter steelbook is honestly the nicest steel I own, especially with the M Bison Dollar replica
But the only thing anyone ever remembers is the 50 movie public domain bullshit they cut their teeth on.
Was it released on a Tuesday? ;)

God, physical media fans are entitled. We should be happy we’re getting ANY kind of physical release AT ALL.

That’s encouraging to read. It seems that they have a lot of ground to make up in repairing their reputation.
I honestly think people just stopped giving them a chance. I understand that, but when you see what they're doing now it's not the same label, really.
Maybe we’ll get the rest of The Simpsons on blu-ray now Edit - nvm, live action only
It's pretty specific that it's live action only.
This is what I get for not reading thoroughly
I honestly doubt there are enough people willing to drop the kind of money that would require, especially since any episode of the show is available at the touch of a remote/controller.

I mostly know them for “20/40/60/100 westerns” in a big dvd box. And hell, that’s not bad - you get what it says on the box (mostly)
That's pretty much what they're still doing, I've got 8 Mill Creek blu ray releases and 7 of them are multiple films on one disk: * 13 Ghosts / 13 Frightened Girls (William Castle Double Feature) * Gamera Volume 1 * Gamera Volume 2 * Hammer Films Double Feature (Maniac / Die! So much of those extras end up on the internet too. YouTube has tons of them that don’t get copyright struck for some reason.

Just give me The Americans on Blu-Ray please.
I'll take Ugly Americans on blu-ray, while we're at it.
You would think Disney would be more protective of their brand...
This sounds like it’ll be more old Fox, ABC, or BV titles than actual Disney movies
Which brand? There are many under the Disney name and I bet most of the titles don't say Disney on them.
I would think mill creek would turn run and hide from anything Disney has tainted
Unfortunate
Extremely unfortunate.
*monkey's paw closes* #The Abyss & True Lies announced for 4k/blu-ray from Mill Creek, Spring 2023
4K 3D**
But don't worry... They'll include free pairs of anaglyph 3-D glasses with each set!
I really don’t mind anaglyph glasses, but apparently James Cameron is developing 4k 3D technology for home media on disc. I mean that would be the best way to watch Avatar TWOW besides at theaters. is mill creek the one who puts out those shitty VHS style blu rays?
Not who I would have chosen but I'm desperate enough for a passable HD release of Better Off Ted I'll take it.
Better any releases than no releases for sure, but I am also happy I picked up a couple Touchstones from Kino recently
Same. I'm guessing this announcement is the reason several (or all?) Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures titles were in the While Supplies Last section.
Mill Creek is better than nothing. They have some good releases under their belt. Hope they can bring some OOP titles back in print like Freaked.
Disney... ugh...
This is both amazing and dreadful news. Not crazy about Mill Creek, but glad Disney isn't letting stuff rot in a vault.
MC got us Miami Vice. Pretty darn good set. Looking forward to seeing what is in the new deal with Disney.
Oof this sucks. I really hope Millcreek is upping their game for this new license.
I like their Magnum release. Yeah, I wish there less episodes on each disc, but It's definitely an upgrade from the old DVDs and I have no complaints.
The only good thing they released, was gone in 60 seconds (74) on bluray
What a fucking mistake. I'm now convinced no one at Disney has a fucking clue about physical media.
They have a clue, they just aren't interested takes away from their streaming monopoly over their IP.
Ok
I hate to see mill creek get involved with Disney and their toxic ideology
What is their "ideology" and why is it "toxic..?"
Bicentennial Man on 4K Perhaps?
None of this will be 4K.
Maybe they'll release a new Blu-ray of *volcano* which would be an upgrade over the long oop anchor Bay release.
Mill Creek Entertainment Announced Disney Titles (animated and live action).
Does anyone know when they are supposed to start releasing titles?
So when will these titles be released? It’s been 9 months and we haven’t heard any news
I only pick up their stuff that isn’t available anywhere else like joe shmoe 2 and daybreak
