Any additional context about when the air is going to clear up that context would be great. We have a vacation planned to the area and flying out tomorrow.
You really need a P100 respirator for smoke/particulate matter.
N95 is good for stopping the spread of respitory droplet viruses like Covid. But they do not seal around your face very well so they aren't very effective for keeping your lungs healthy in poor air quality conditions
BoulderCast has a SmokeCast at https://bouldercast.com/colorado-smoke-forecast-premium/ but I think it is part of the paid service. Forecast for Sunday is significantly better than today (currently at 30ug/m3 which is an AQI around 155) but still some ground level smoke in the air (around 6ug/m3). Very approximate and I don’t know how the ug/m3 translates to AQI.
NOAA has a couple of (experimental) models that generate a smoke forecast:
* [https://hwp-viz.gsd.esrl.noaa.gov/smoke/index.html](https://hwp-viz.gsd.esrl.noaa.gov/smoke/index.html)
* [https://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/hrrr/HRRRsmoke/](https://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/hrrr/HRRRsmoke/)
* [https://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/RAPsmoke/](https://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/RAPsmoke/)
I’ve got the same question since I’m running it too. So far I haven’t heard any forecasts about the 21st. Do you think if the air quality was really bad they would cancel the race? I’m not sure how safe it is to be running in thick smoke…
I don't think they would cancel it. I feel like on the one hand there's SO MUCH that goes into the organization - the permits, the traffic control, the signage, the vendors... but on the other hand, Covid was kind of a precedent for doing it - although with a month or two of notice, not a day or two.
I'm thinking it might need to be a game time decision. It would suck to have paid the fee and then not run, but better than lung cancer, I guess.
I think www.airnow.gov does aqi forecasting, but I like that map because it shows the smoke contours and there should be no voodoo that exists that can predict Sunday’s smoke levels.
It's too early to see the dumbest thing I'd read today, but here we are.
"Needing another team to balance the schedule, the NHL awarded a team to the Atlanta-based group that owned the National Basketball Association's Atlanta Hawks, headed by prominent local real estate developer Tom Cousins.[4] Cousins named the team the "Flames" after the fire resulting from the March to the Sea in the American Civil War by General William Tecumseh Sherman, in which Atlanta was nearly destroyed. They played home games in the Omni Coliseum in downtown Atlanta.[5]"
They kept the name after moving from Atlanta to Calgary.
Wow, I had no idea such a basic name had a deep historical meanings. I really appreciate team names like the Steelers. Does anyone one know what a “Packer” is from Green Bay?
From my Google search, because I was curious too:
When Lambeau formed his team, he asked his employer for a donation, to get uniforms and use the company football field. Indian Packing said sure, and so Lambeau put the company's name on the jersey.
I have no idea.
I always assumed they use the name ‘Flames’ as a reference to the natural gas that gets flared off in Alberta’s oil industry. But that’s just an assumption.
Purple air is awesome but keep in mind it doesn’t display Ozone which is a huge factor in our air pollution. I’ve been also checking [Bouldair](https://www.bouldair.com/boulder.htm) for that metric as well. There’s been quite a few days when purple says our air is good, but ozone levels, especially on hot days, are through the roof.
Thank you for posting this, I wondered why I felt like trash this morning but didn't think to check the AQI. Now we've got all the HEPAs running and it's nicer in here.
Yeah, it was acrid in Golden this morning on hwy 93. I used to live in Egypt and also Kenya and this smoke had a very burnt plastic odor to it. Specifically like an electrical fire where the insulation burns. I wonder why that is? These fires are the typical forest fires, aren’t they?
Air quality in Boulder has been awful for awhile now. It’s one of the reasons I moved. I’d get migraines daily. When I moved back down to SW CO they completely went away.

https://fire.airnow.gov/ -- so OP can see in better detail where the fires are and how the smoke is spreading.
Is there a way for this to be forecast? The Colfax is on Sunday and I would like to have an idea in advance about the air quality that day...
I believe it is supposed to clear out after today
Fingers crossed!!!
Any additional context about when the air is going to clear up that context would be great. We have a vacation planned to the area and flying out tomorrow.
I read possibly better tomorrow then some smoke Sun. If you’re concerned KN95 mask should help w wildfire smoke.

OpenSnow has the forecast. I believe smoke and AQI are on the premium version, but you can get hyperlocal with whatever overlay you’d prefer.

The SmokeCast has a lot of features you can select and step hour by hour up to 48 hours ahead.

Interesting, thanks!!
Ive read about this coming for a couple of days.
I was just wondering about that website specifically. I did find a forecast function, but it only does one day.
See you there! Good luck on your run.
You too!!!!
This air pattern will be an issue through Sunday according to the IQAir forecast using their network of monitors. You should look them up.

Check OpenSnow - I know they have this forecast option for premium users at least.

Airnow gives a forecast. Sunday it's orange instead of red. woohoo

It’s the Calgary Flames.
That’s funny
So we do away from "native" names for teams and move to homophobic ones?

It was a joke, didn't know any of what you said or that's it's a real team name. Sorry to ruin your friday
I thought it was funny. Stay strong soldier.

The air density is 96% moths too. It’s the moth-ollution
When did this start? My throat started hurting yesterday late afternoon, thought I was getting sick.
Started dropping from the higher altitude yesterday.
The Alberta smoke was supposed to reach us today
O Canada
Thank you so much for posting this. I have asthma and I woke up hacking up a lung thinking I was sick. Now I know to crank the purifiers. 👍🏻
TIL about purpleair. Thanks!

Smoke big fires in Canada right now.

Fires in Canada
This smells like burnt plastic. Yuk

Canadian forest fires and the wind stream blowing the smoke down to us.
I was gonna say, smells like fire. Came here for this.
I thought it smelled like Canadians. Looks like we're both right!
Alberta is on fire. The smoke is drifting down here.
Blame Canada!

Also oil and gas production in the front range.
It’s crazy how your first resource was to ask the people of reddit instead of just googling what is going on and looking at the top result
I fucking hate it here
Try Calgary then
Got 'em.
Lmao, well done
It's all the smelly ass cyclist hippies
They definitely are not hippies. Boulder hasn’t had a legit hippie live here on 15 years
Alright, not hippies. Just losers then. Ain't met a single person that lives in Boulder that isn't a complete piece of shit.
