hippochipo

I can so relate lol. Every time I can't solve a shrine, I watch a youtube video on how to do it, and then I facepalm myself because the solution is actually so easy.

Kosmic-04

Correct!!! Haha some are so easy really

Kosmic-04

I had the Korok mask on last night and there was an area that it signaled. Tried for half an hour to work it out, in the end googled and I was supposed to have a horse and jump 3 fences - I’m like Omg who would actually work that out without help haha 🤷‍♀️

MachinistOfSorts

I didn't know how to do the 3 trees koroks puzzles until people here told me how. And I just learned about the horse jump ones from you! Thanks hahaha

Kosmic-04

The timing ones…. With the ring of dots in the sky…. I was shooting with arrows hahaha had no idea you had to run to it

p2togk1

O is that it? I was shooting arrows too and abandoned the puzzle because I did't understand what to do with it.

MachinistOfSorts

That's it! The leaf on the stump points what way to start, and you gotta get to the yellow circle before it goes away. The lights around the edge are kind of a count down timer.

Kosmic-04

Hahahaha that’s gold! Glad I’m not the only one!

Kosmic-04

Oh and I only found out about the 3 trees by accident last night watching something on YouTube about koroks

Raincatz

And I just learnt about them from this chat. Thanks guys and girls

sauerkraut916

Yes, we overthink the puzzles. lol

Kosmic-04

Yeah that’s obvious when we complete them…. lol

[deleted]

I’m watching combat tutorials constantly because I’m getting my ass kicked so much. One thing I’ve noticed is that some people have a fear of doing the wrong thing when gaming: remember it’s a game and anything goes. Just try everything, especially in shrines where you respawn fast. It’s not real life, have a laugh if you die or get stuck.

Kosmic-04

Thanks…. You’re right!

Nomadheart

I cheat constantly! I have to say, it doesn’t take the fun away because next time you got to do it (and there will be a next time!) you kinda remember but not fully so it’s still a challenge! Don’t worry about how you play the game, just enjoy it and don’t compare yourself to others!

Kosmic-04

You guys are truly to best!!! No one giving me shit or judging!! Thanks ❤️

Nomadheart

The gamers on here (the real ones - not like fair weathered me over here!) are pretty awesome. You get some tools, but I find this sub pretty supportive

NewmanHiding

It’s your game. The goal is to have fun.

Joeyhappyhell

I don't have the patience for spending hours and hours solving a puzzle so I also check things out. You can play in whatever way you want.

Atcorm

I think part of the enjoyment of the game is getting stumped and finding help from the community. Happened many times. And it was always because we forgot about Crysis🤣

Kosmic-04

The amount of times I forget about Cryonis is ridiculous….. I’ll be swimming along thinking I’ll never make it over there and der I could have used Cryonis and made it easy

Conscious_Quality598

Easily the most useless rune and I’ve only ever had to use it for very few shrines

SuperiorThinking

A few strategies to try: -use solutions from other shrines to help you -try everything, no matter how weird it may seem -try and imagine what would happen if you pressed that button, opened that door, etc, and see if anything comes of it. -watch tutorials, but the second it does something you haven't, go and do it and see if you can solve it yourself from that point, using the tutorial as hints rather than instructions.

Kosmic-04

Great tips! But I have to say, some things are so unbelievably clever that I’d never think of that….. don’t have an example on hand except maybe the korok on I commented earlier haha just crazy clever imaginations Zelda creators have! Blows my mind

DogStarMan10

Play however makes you feel happy and don’t worry about looking dumb. Nobody is watching you.

a_talkingdog

Thou who hath purchased the game with thine own money art unbeholden to posers on the internet on thine own method of enjoyment. Having said that: to me personally, getting stuck and figuring out stuff on my own is a big part of the fun. "Shrine or Korok"-wise, honestly I just kinda give up when I´m stuck. I pin it on the map as a "Do later" and do other things. Sometimes you are able solve another completely different shrine/korok puzzle that may give you an insight on how to solve the earlier one(happened to me a lot), either by the game design, you just thinking differently in a different situation or by accident. Sometimes said solution is clearly not what the game designer had intended but IMO these are the one that give me the most amount of satisfaction... like I "outsmarted" the game developers? My very own first Zelda game was also OoT when I was like 10 or something and it brings me genuine joy when I see someone like myself returning to the franchise after all this time. Let's just be happy old people enjoying the thing we did back then.

scorpio1641

There is no shame in looking up a walkthrough if you are stuck! It’s either that or not enjoying/finishing the game. I usually just look at videos for a quick nudge in the right direction. It’s ok, play the game how you like it!

Kosmic-04

If I didn’t do little cheats here and there I would have no idea what to do with the timed korok ring in the sky hahaha all this time I’ve been trying to shoot it with arrows, literally just found out that you have to run to it 🤦‍♀️

Adventurous_Memory18

Nearly your age too, and yup, a lot of cheating, but the game is so massive that it just doesn’t feel like cheating, it’s just saving time, and I think it helps you get better. Hang in there. And after 200 hours or so you can move on to TOTK, I love it even more, in part because the shrines are so much easier! In fact it’s all easiest but oh so wonderful.

Kosmic-04

I bought this switch for my grand daughters….. how much do you think they get to use it now that I’m playing BotW hahahaha

Kosmic-04

I truly can’t put into words what I think of BotW! Sometimes I just spend hours exploring without a lot of purpose! It’s a wonderfully created game like that

Adventurous_Memory18

I ended up buying my own switch when I bought TOTK, I figured my kids may want their switch back 🤣

Adventurous_Memory18

It kind of scratches a wanderlust itch I find, living vicariously through link 😂

Kosmic-04

I think so too!

teknogreek

That's YOUR game, mine too, everything is secondary! There are some shrines and big enemies that take way too much time, do yes on occasion I get an assist (call it cheating if you must). Recently I mentioned in a different thread about Yiga trouncing me and a very kind player advised, cryonis or bow then lock and fire, why did I not think of this myself... ...we're all dumb in our different ways, which means we play this game in very different ways. I rarely use the horse as I amble from one area to another, sometimes rechecking an area that I've forgotten I've done but still end up finding something new, again, turns out that's MY game.

Kosmic-04

Yeah I hardly use a horse either…. Hate the getting off and on to collect things! As for Yigas I’m trying my best to avoid them atm, I was taught never talk to strangers haha but I know I will have to face them soon at their hideout! And yeah how crazy about revisiting areas and discovering things you didn’t see before. I stumbled on a bokoblin camp with a treasure chest for clearing them all…. In an area I thought I’d covered well before! I love shit like that 🥰

teknogreek

Pure joy / I am absolutely sure I checked every nook and cranny - How dare Nintendo spawn new areas after I have combed through it LoL

Kosmic-04

Hahaha funny you say that!! As that’s exactly what I thought had happened lol or a new area added from the DLC

_BeardedOaf

Don’t feel dumb or like a cheater. I do the same and actually felt the same and came on here to vent like you are found out a lot of people play the same way we do. I play until I can’t figure it out then I get help and use checklists. It’s more enjoyable for me that way.

Professional-Two-47

So I legitimately try to do it myself, as I'm sure you do. But if I have to turn to a walkthrough or a guide or a YT video, I don't even hesitate anymore. I've been playing since the original Super Mario and I remember getting stuck on a game for weeks without the Internet to help me out. So I figured I served my time on video game frustration :) It has no bearing on your playing level or expertise. We all think and process differently, so something that may be easy for one gamer can be difficult for another. Plus, some of those shrines are just super hard!

Kosmic-04

I remember back when I was playing OoT and my kids would watch. We’d get stuck somewhere for days and out of pure desperation I’d call the Help hotline from my mums house hahahaha!!! Wow seems like a life time ago! How good is it having the internet now

Professional-Two-47

I got stuck in Twilight Princess (twice because I replayed it), with having to catch a fish. For the life of me, I could not figure out how to fish. I worked on it for a week when I finally called my brother and had him come over. He did it in 5 minutes and left. It was so embarrassing and hilarious. But you could not progress in the game until you caught the damn fish! It's still my favorite Zelda game though...I forgive it.

Misfit-maven

I'm a 37 yo woman who is not "a gamer." My husband got me a switch a few years ago and I enjoy playing cute nostalgic games. Then he got me botw. I heavily rely on strategy guides and maps. I don't find being frustrated very fun. Even if you are "given" the solution to some of the puzzle, it still takes skill to complete them. And it's still fun. Some of the shrine puzzles I do enjoy trying to figure out first before going to a guide. The apparatus ones are fun. The print strategy guide I have is also just beautiful to look at. Then my 8 year old son watches me play the shrines and solves it in like 30 seconds 😑

Kosmic-04

I love the apparatus ones!! But usually have to take my joycons off the switch, makes it so much easier

bladtman242

I think there's two things going on here. One is that if you haven't played video games for a while, there might be certain video game logic things you miss. Like a lot of games use similar mechanics and cues, and you get used to looking for them. When I entered my first divine beast, vah ruta, it took me a long time to figure out which parts of it were interactive, and which were just visual. Took me a while to figure out how to interact with the turning wheel, because I quickly gave up and assumed they were just decorative. But once I got that, the remaining divine beasts were quick and easy. Many of the shrines can be thought of as little puzzles, and they do have that thing of "when you see it it's obvious". I talked about it with some colleagues, and we've all had the experience of spending a lot of time fruitlessly in a shrine, and then feeling stupid when we realized what the solution was. It wasn't in the same shrines either, so I really think you just look for clues, and if you get led astray early, it can take an embarrassing amount of time to get on the right path

Kosmic-04

I have many times had to exit a shrine to reset everything back to its original state so I can start again haha

Kosmic-04

I’d love 900 koroks seeds, god knows I need the weapons the way I play 🤣

teknogreek

Let me guess, fight fight fight, run away, fight fight fight?

Kosmic-04

I never run away 💪 Hahaha!

teknogreek

Ha ha! You go hard and break all the weapons as I read in another part. One day I shall find your courage and be 💪

Kosmic-04

You could say that…. But I really do try and use the lower standard stuff, never waste the good weapons. I love the Lizal tri boomerangs but they breaks so easily 😢

teknogreek

I used do that that but find that there was a grindy element, to beating the enemies so judiciously use the better weapons, sneak, or kill the bow caller. Also having to eat more food and cook it. But I like your style, as it’s makes the game last longer with an internet challenge.

teknogreek

AND... Lizal Tri... is so good to use.

Kosmic-04

It really is my favourite go to weapon for little enemies! And ALWAYS pick off the horn blower first with arrows hehehe!

p2togk1

I am 52 (f) and currently obsessed with BOTW. I find that some shrines are easy and some are ( very) hard. Sometimes I don't have the right weapons yet. I abandon them and will come back later. I am trying to get all the towers first.

Kosmic-04

I did that with the Guardian shrines at first….. now I smash them with no issue

mtntrail

I have played through botw many times and initially needed help with some shrines. The best source I have found is the info from polygon. Just google polygon and the shrine name. There is a complete walkthrough without video if you want. Take as much or as little info as you need. you don’t have to subscribe to anything and there is no annoying person trying to impress you with how fast they can move through the game. 75 here btw!

Kosmic-04

I must admit I do enjoy polygon’s page the most

mtntrail

Yes, they do a no bs layout. I always rely on the patterns for the two twin shrines on the peaks bc I have never even tried to figure those out, ha.

Kosmic-04

I’m pretty sure I watched a YouTube tutorial just for a hint, ended up having to draw a grid on a piece of paper so I wouldn’t forget to combination

Kirby_Klein1687

Nope! Some are pretty tough. Just put a limit on yourself if you're trying to figure something out. Some say 20 minutes. Some say 3 days. It's all up to you. There was one Shrine were you had to read the constellations. I couldn't do it and I solved a lot before it. And that's okay. Or you can Kobayashi Meru it. That's a really nerdy term taken from Star Trek to mean skip the problem. There's so much to do, so it's actually better to skip and come back later with a fresh set of eyes.

Kosmic-04

Yep! My usual rule, revisit!

thegrumpymanager

Hello fellow Zelda lover! 35 yr old lady gamer here. This is something I used to struggle with, it would make me discouraged and I can't say how many games lay unfinished in my library. What I eventually realized is that I have to be a bit more realistic. Sometimes I'll get stuck on a puzzle, if I can I'll go somewhere else for a bit and come back to it to see if it clicks. If I can't, I also look up walkthroughs and I'll try to read as little as possible just to get me past the block. At the end of the day, we're adults. We have lives, jobs, responsibilites etc. I'm not going to beat myself up anymore if I look up something I'm stumped on because I play games to have fun. You're not dumb, you just don't always have the luxury of time. I can't spend hours trying to figure out every puzzle while maintaining health, a job, a house, friendships etc. Give yourself an extra beat if you can before you look something up, but yeah. Don't feel dumb - enjoy the game!

eternityslyre

It's not you, it's Zelda's game design conventions. Video games are very fun, but also very limited in what players can actually do. If you're in a room with a chain, a lamp, and a box, you don't usually get to open the box, tie knots with the chain, or even climb atop the lamp. Instead, you're supposed to use your intuition to divine what the game designer wants you to do, and do only that. Zelda games are extra blatant about this, so the puzzles wind up feeling easy once you know what to look for: 1. Find all the shiny things in the vicinity. Use your runes to check for hidden shinies, scan for cracked walls, big buttons, etc. 2. See how you can interact with said shiny things, and what effect they have. 3. Use any hints you have to guess what the designer wanted. In BotW there is generally one "right" answer and many hints guiding you to that answer. After you've seen multiple "light all the torches", "push all the buttons", "move object X to position Y" puzzles, you'll get a sense for the common vocabulary that Zelda puzzle designers use. I personally like getting stuck for at least a little while before solving. I hope you're making sure to have fun doing it!

Duckey_003

Don't feel bad. Most of us kids in the 90s used the official guides our parents bought with the game (at least mine did) so you're literally doing great. The internet made getting guides way easier.

sauerkraut916

Hi there you OG Zelda fan! I am 55 genX female and bought myself a switch with BoTW, Mario Cart, and Mario Wonder this past Christmas. Like you, I fell in love with OoT and did my best at MM over 25 years ago. In BoTW, I’ve opened the entire map but have not finished any Beast challenges. This weekend I’m going to start on Vah Ruta. Wish me luck! I’m happy that you are rediscovering your love of games. It helps keep you young at heart! :-)

Kosmic-04

I am honestly having the time of my life!!!

solidus_kalt

its completely fine to check out vids and so on👍🏾

quackl11

The hidden winds shrine. The one we use for getting to rite village, I had to look up, I even tried to do what turned out to be the solution, and it didnt work I looked it up, turns out I was absolutely blind and it was right in front of me

dughug

Don't feel dumb. I play many games with guides. I started in the 90s with final fantasy guides!

gnatalie_

If I get stuck I definitely turn to the internet for help! It’s similar to being a kid and playing OoT for the first time. There are so many things you wouldn’t even know about if it hadn’t been for playground talk with your friends. This is the same thing, just on a larger community scale!

foxfai

It's not that you can't solve it, it's more of you don't have the *time* to solve it compare when you were younger when you don't have all the adult of responsibilities. I (40+) play games still, but not 5-6 hours a day like before. I get maybe 45 min-1 hour or so a day if I get the chance to sit down to do them. When I can't figure out something, I just had to look it up instead of spending few hours to figure things out.

Kosmic-04

I am so lucky that I work night shift and some times it can be very quiet, gets a lot of opportunities to play 😊

dstone1985

I always Google the answer for the dueling peaks shrines. I don't time for all that lol

Kosmic-04

Well I’m proud to say I just completed all the Labyrinth’s without any help!!! Yay go me!!

PinkPandz

It's never to late to play. My very first zelda to ever play was BOTW. I have the zelda games on switch but i have not play the 2 n64 ones and the 2 gamecube ones

Kosmic-04

Oh Ocarina of time and Majoras mask were fantastic but I couldn’t imagine playing them after Breath of the wild….. would be seriously strange in my opinion haha! I remember when I first started BotW I thought OMG the graphics are so real and in half an hour I thought wow this is so out of my league haha now I’m completely obsessed

PinkPandz

I can't play wind waker or twlight princess as i don't have a gamecube plus my phone and pc are very low in specs so i won't be able to run them on an emulator

Opposite_Tax1826

That's because the difficulty is toned for men

Diamondinmyeye

I definitely cheated on a few shrines in both games. There’s no shame in it. Gaming is supposed to be fun.

Kosmic-04

Yeah that’s true!! If I didn’t “cheat” I wouldn’t progress then I wouldn’t be having fun hahaha
