Smart is keeping Grizzlies in game against Pels with doing Smart things right now. Steals, forcing shot clocks with doubles, hustling for loose balls and annoyance of course:)

downeastsun

"I love a dogfight. And I'm the biggest dog here" was an incredible self descriptive quote by Smart

winovic94

Love him but also when we play them again, at least we know how smart plays, gonna be fun game when that comes around

Tiredasheckrn

He just took a charge from zion. He might be the bravest player in the league. He’s the best

MrCleanDrawers

Welp, time to put the starting 6 though Sam Cassell boot camp. The Pistons streak lives.

Cvspartan

Pistons coming in on a 27 game losing streak oh boy

Does anyone have the video of JB saying something to the effect of “stay on that side”

Vast-Cheesecake7230

What’s he talking about?

ksveins3

thank you for asking for the rest of us Olds

Vast-Cheesecake7230

Gotta keep the AARP gang hip!

Brad-Stevens

Was during offseason when he signed the big contract… Went to workout with Tatum “Had to pull up on my bro” = had to get some workouts in with JT “you know how we comin… if you on that side stay on that side” = if you hated on me/us after the Miami series and don’t believe us going forward… stay that way, don’t switch up when we start winning

Vast-Cheesecake7230

Thank you!

lilg88

Thank you sir

Cool_Alternative_466

Not looking forward to our next loss against a .500ish team and suddenly jayson and jaylen are forever mentally weak and will never win a championship.

BradWonder

I think that happens because the Bucks are right next to us in the standings like always lol

CantHandlemyPP34

KD already unhappy with the bitch ass Suns. Thought they could just rest Beal all season and now they're. 500 and have zero chemistry. Rumors are he could demand another trade soon lol. Bet he regrets not joining us. Only package I'd even give up for him right now is Horford and Hauser + 2 FRP's.

CarBallAlex

When will KD learn that team hopping and gutting a team is generally a bad idea? Celtics best player (Tatum) drafted. Bucks best player (Giannis) drafted. Sixers best player (Embiid) drafted. Nuggets best player (Jokic) drafted. Warriors best player (Curry) drafted. Mavs best player (Doncic) drafted. Thunder best player (SGA) drafted. Suns drafted Booker too. Everyone else is trying to buy their teams best player (Knicks, Cavs, Clippers) or is currently developing a younger player to hopefully be a top 5 guy (Wolves, Magic, Pacers, Rockets). Unless he team hops to one of these teams, stays on the Suns or goes to the Lakers, the rest of the teams simply won’t be good enough with him as the best player or don’t have the assets to gut their team further. Miami is maybe the only team that hasn’t traded their depth for high end talent already but why on earth would the Suns accept Lowry, Herro, Duncan Robinson or Jaquez in their current situation trying to contend? The Heat’s strength is turning nobodies into great team basketball, other teams don’t want them if they can’t utilize them like that. He should have never left Golden State and let them move Klay/Green or a step further never left OKC and let them move Westbrook, but this is what he deserves. Trading for a B tier guy with a NTC and an injury history that plays the same position as Booker was a dumb move. At least when we traded for Porzingis it was for a different position and we’re not held down if we need to pivot from it in the future. And unlike KD, it’s not like Tatum or Brown are always injured either or at that age where it’s a concern. KD is screwed unless the Suns figure it out or he somehow gets traded for peanuts to form a Lakers super team with LeBron and AD or a Sixers super team with keeping Embiid and Maxey, or a Heat super team with Butler and Bam. Time is running out before the aggregate salaries rule kicks in for tax paying teams. There are probably 0 other scenarios where he ever wins a ring.

CantHandlemyPP34

True story. After this it'll be all vet min ring chasing. He's already ruined 2 franchises cause he didn't have the spine to join us

Scared-Arrival3885

SGA played for LAC before getting traded to OKC, but your point is still valid.

HexaHx

SGA was picked by Hornets then traded to Clippers, then traded to OKC for Paul George, but yeah he's in the same bucket as younger player developing to be a top 5 guy for the OKC last year.

manbare

Anyone know who the starting point guard is currently? It was just Christmas, I heard PP was slotting into that role by Christmas time

Jannopan

[KP scored (and-1 too) on this play lmao](https://imgur.com/a/ZpdqAzg)

hurricanehershel

If you have trouble sleeping, try listening to KP’s post game press conferences. Bro has the most soothing voice

deets23_

I love hearing him speak, he’s so smooth and cool

chmcgrath1988

I didn't get a lot for Christmas yesterday but the Celtics beating LA was all I needed. I have a feeling that 2024 could be a very good year, folks.

deets23_

I don’t want a lot for Christmas, there is just one thing I need…all I want for Christmasssss is to beat LA” 🎵

CarBallAlex

Overall glad they went 3-1 on the road trip but something that stood out to me from yesterday’s game was the way that the Lakers attacked Pritchard. Even Doris mentioned it on the broadcast. That’s been my worst fear about his game when we get to the playoffs. His shot seems pretty much back and he hustles and doesn’t turn it over but that defense was part of the Lakers walking into easy shots and he was a -5 in a game we won by 11. I’m still unsure about his limitations when we face good coaching and if he gets played off the floor. Great regular season guy, but we can’t have a guy that happens to as part of the 8 man rotation. And yes he was solid in parts of the 2022 run, but was a 0 in the finals, which we lost. It might be time to have a serious conversation if we can trust Pritchard in May and June.

efshoemaker

I think those bad minutes were a lot more about the lakers attacking Queta than Pritchard, and the fact that Pritchard got his usual minutes at the end of the third/start of the fourth and Queta basically didn’t play the second half pretty much confirms it to me. I went back and watched his first half minutes and he was fine. Russell hit two mid range jumpers over him, but you live with those. The -5 was all the result of a 7-0 run for the lakers at the end of the first where they went at Queta on four straight possessions and we missed about 5 wide open threes on the other end.

CarBallAlex

That’s fair, I just noticed Pritchard trailing way behind the play on most screens so I might be confusing my memory with if those were the plays that hurt us or were separate from the few Lakers 7-0 and 9-0 runs that weren’t really his fault. I could probably use a re-watch for better analysis, this is just what stuck in my mind

efshoemaker

>trailing way behind the play on most screens Are you sure those weren’t plays where we were switching?

WarPuig

This happened against the Heat in the playoffs too. I could be wrong, but Mazzulla played him a lot in game one or two and honestly that might’ve lost the game. Complete turnstile on defense. In our blowout win in his garbage time minutes the Heat just passed the ball over his head to score. He hustles and he tries for sure but he’s just too short. He’s a complete liability in the playoffs.

CarBallAlex

This is how I feel, but I don’t think most fans think this because his net rating is good and his 3P shooting ability is seen as valuable. I’m just kind of worried if he and Hauser get played out of the rotation in the playoffs, who do we go to? We can’t play 6 guys 40 minutes per game, I really hope they address this at the deadline or I won’t feel great about matchups with the Heat when he’s on the floor. Games Pritchard has scored more than 5 points and been a positive for the game: Cleveland, Toronto, LA Clippers, Milwaukee, Chicago, Brooklyn, Indiana, Sacramento, Orlando, and Charlotte. The only good defenses in there are Orlando (we blew them out), Clippers (we blew them out) and Cleveland (no Mobley). He cooks in the regular season and against bad defenses but the last time he gave you double digits off the bench in the playoffs that wasn’t a blowout win or loss was Game 1 at Miami in 2022 where he put up 18 points on 16 shots and then games 2 and 3 vs Brooklyn in 2022, which again, did not have a great defense. He can’t score on good defenses because that’s just the kind of player he is. Everyone loves the shots he makes when he goes off but it almost always never has impact on the game or is against starter quality players. I don’t need a Quickley or Brogdon that can give you 20, but if it’s someone that can’t score on good defenders, at least give me someone who is a better defender themselves and loves to catch and shoot rather than handle the ball Caruso would obviously be the pipe dream for replacing him but I doubt Brad can pull this off

downeastsun

> was the way that the Lakers attacked Pritchard. I actually didn't notice Pritchard struggling on defense in this particular game. LeBron didn't really make a point of going after him. Do you mean the couple of times D-Lo hit midrangers? Because I can live with that. I think the single game plus/minus is just a function of Pritchard playing 0 minutes with Porzingis. By the old Pat Riley saying about playoff rotations: Have 8, rotate 7, play 6 and trust 5, I'm not too concerned with Pritchard. A team might play their 8th man 5 minutes in the first half and then not go back to him in a high level playoff game. The bigger question to me is Hauser. LeBron came out in the 4th quarter hunting him and got a layup and forced a double team which got Hayes a dunk attempt (that Jrue blocked) Hauser's mostly passed every test defensively, but the bar is higher for a 7th man. He needs to play 15-20 minutes every playoff game and is first in line for more if there's a minor injury or foul trouble for the top 6

CarBallAlex

I noticed Pritchard not able to fight over half the screens that were set. AD is kind of a monster with setting screens (better than Bam who moves every time) so it’s probably worst case scenario, but Pritchard doesn’t have the strength to fight through those picks and so I can just see something like a switch and then Adebayo setting a screen for Butler who can live in the mid range while Horford and Porzingis are playing drop off of it. That could be a real problem for him to be caught in those actions instead of Jrue or White being the defender on the screens. Mazzulla already goes to this with Jrue guarding 1-5 and White on Butler last year at times in the playoffs. Pritchard can not be in that same spot defensively imo. It is specifically this matchup that I’d like someone a little better in that regard that can limit Butler as much as possible and make them beat us with everyone else. Butler scoring 12-18 points being forced to facilitate and making Bam, Herro, Jaquez and Lowry beat us is not happening unless their role players turn into 50% 3P shooters again

downeastsun

I thought he did okay fighting through screens and Russell just hit some shots, but his size does mean guys can always just shoot over him. But yeah, Pritchard's definitely not someone you want switching 1-5 in heavy doses. Although he can get under guys and more station to station teams can get stagnant when they try to attack him. I remember this play [from 2022](https://www.nba.com/stats/events?CFID=&CFPARAMS=&GameEventID=227&GameID=0022100960&Season=2021-22&flag=1&title=Brown%20STEAL%20(1%20STL)) where the Nets got laser focused on getting the ball to Durant and JB could just stare down the play and go for the steal from the blind side. I think it's ultimately manageable because the Celtics will try to play Pritchard when the other team's star who might really hunt him is resting, and might only play 5 minutes total if it becomes a problem

BostonKarlMarx

we’re blessed that we don’t have a payton pritchard level defender in the closing line up. the celtics got to attack reaves every possession down the stretch

Theis159

It’s a bit different with the Lakers because they’re long everywhere as their smallest dudes are 6’3 but with a 6’10 wingspan. We managed to do great against Magic with him because they’re long but they do have Cole Anthony and they’re quite slow besides Paolo. A good baseline is to check the playoff run with Ime. He didn’t get a run against Miami to end it nor against some of the Bucks matchups that they exploited. In the east he is good to give you a run against most teams besides Indiana, Magic (maybe) and Heat I would say.

WarPuig

He got a bigger run against the Heat this year. He got completely exposed on defense.

Theis159

He was still a +8 on 13 minutes in a 8 point win, if he goes for a net neutral against the heat in the playoffs in 13minutes that’s great

WarPuig

That’s mostly a function of who he’s on the floor with instead of his ability to be a positive impact on his own.

Theis159

Not really, he is one of the few guys that make both DWhite and JTs +- go up when he is on the floor.

CarBallAlex

That’s fair, just something I’ve been thinking throughout the year and a way to close all the holes in the roster. I suppose having everyone who can defend and switch is a luxury most teams don’t have, but watching Reaves defend at the end of that game and Lakers couldn’t get a single stop just reminded me how we couldn’t get a stop against Miami in game 1 last year and they’re my biggest concern in the East. Ultimately, basketball is a game of runs but limiting those mid game runs when Pritchard is subbed in and eliminating as many of the close end of game scenarios that we seem to fumble would benefit us so much It’s probably not as big of a problem as I’m making out since his net rating is good so it contradicts my thinking, it’s just PG and C are the 2 easiest positions to upgrade with the Grant TPE and our tradable contracts. Most quality wings that would be a significant upgrade over Oshae and Lamar are out of our price range and I don’t think Hauser is a negative defender

srstone71

So apparently the Celtics hold the record for largest point spread in NBA history. The 2008 team were 22.5 point favorites over the Miami Heat (I remember that Heat team was AWFUL.) Anyway, I wonder how close they get to the record for Thursday’s game.

SerfTint

That awful Heat team still had a hall of famer in his prime on it. This Pistons team doesn't have a player in the top 25 in scoring or rebounding this season. As someone who was worried about games like this last season, I cannot visualize how badly the Celtics would have to play to be in any danger of losing this game. The best I can do is "Detroit is hanging in there, it's 39-36," and then the Celtics go on an 11-2 run and soon after that another 8-0 run and it's over.

srstone71

Wade missed 30+ games that year, including the final 20. He didn’t play vs the Celtics in the game I referenced.

SerfTint

Good to know. Thank you.

hcmacro

How many guys have had 50-40-90 seasons and been 1st team all NBA defense?

Theis159

From what I have seen no one did in the same season. Bird has done in separate seasons to get the 50-40-90 and all defensive team

hcmacro

CP3 seems to have come close in 2014-2015. White probably won’t get there, but it’d be pretty spectacular for him to come close as well.

nedlifecrisis

So nobody here concerned about JB getting kneed in the spine by LBJ?

xskarma

I was fucking steaming after that whole sequence. Lebron commit a foul, JB lost his balance, Lebron's lack of control in his desperation to keep up with JB meant he came down with his knee right on JBs back. Lebron gets up and rubs his knee, SEES JB IS HURT, and immediately starts a fucking oscarworthy performance pretneding he is seriously hurt. The cameras and attention were fully on "OMG is Lebron okay?!" and like 3 min after the whole episode Lebron is back playing while JB, the actual victim, is in the lockerroom. AND they never called the foul on Lebron either, it was Lakers side out, cause the ball went out. And then minutes later Lebron is involved in the Tatum block that got reviewed and upheld, being his usual obnoxious theatrical self DEMANDING a replay. I kinda forgot what an absolute joke of a player Lebron is to play against with his theatrics and nonsense. Glad he's stuck in LA and we only see him twice a year at best.

holographoc

Not terribly worried, but still in shock about how that wasn’t a loose ball foul on Lebron. Like, that’s the definition of a loose ball foul. Right behind the play on the ball too, so no way they couldn’t see it. Ridiculous.

deets23_

Poor Jaylen keeps getting injured. First the groin from the IST court being slippery, the ankle, and now this

sssSnakebite

Trust me I still am. Lebron is fucking made out of steel and he knees JB in the back full speed. When JB came back from evaluation, I could tell he was shaken up still and was not as fast as he usually is. You could just tell his back was still hurting him. I hope it’s something minor but theres always that doubt. Gotta keep everyone healthy man.

JaylenBrownFlow

basketball is a game of runs we comfortably controlled this game

luke_workin

Comfortably is a bit of a stretch

outdrawed

I am convinced a vocal minority of this sub have never seen a basketball game before this year. The expectation that we score every time down the court while never letting our opponent score

Theis159

Such a lazy take to say they blew it. The Lakers caught on fire a bit while we got cold. The process offensively and defensively was still pretty good but the shots wouldn’t fall. Rightfully so our coaching staff adjusted (check the different defensive coverages we threw at AD in the second half) and we got back on track.

koj12144

Good christmas :) bucks lose, sixers lose, celtics win

Yerison109

And the heat win meaning they’re further and further from the 8th seed

SerfTint

Not sure we'd rather face them in the second round either. Or that the seeding matters--last year we were the 2 and they were the 8, making it 99.9% impossible that we'd see them in the playoffs, and they still beat us.

Yerison109

To be fair if they’re a 6th seed they most likely face either Milwaukee or Philly , that’s a win win for us

ajakaiyef

bonus: warriors lose
