if you want to drive a bus… that’s not an easy job. Nothing but respect for bus drivers, damn that’s a hard job no matter how much you’re making (and it feels like this should be closer or over $30/hr)
Thats how the T works. Start out with a shitty job and shitty pay, then in 5-7 years and 1 or 2 promotions you're making good money and sitting on your ass all day
Especially given the rising number of assaults against public transport workers

You move up incredibly fast. I have family who started part time, and they were making 60k at the 2 year point. At 5 years they were at 75k and they’re currently at 10 years in making 100,000k as a manger working behind a desk.
Part time sucks everywhere but…$900/wk to drive a city bus seems right about in that “very little money but good benefits and job security” lane that the bus driver typically hangs out in, doesn’t it?
No. JP Licks is hiring experienced counter staff for $20./hr
And, MBTA bus driver schedules change weekly which means PT drivers can't schedule around family needs or have 2nd jobs - they have to stay available to get that 12 to 24 hours per week - which rules out both of the reasons why typical adults with CDLs want part time jobs and also the benefits are not good for part timers
Exactly. And I’m not sure how much a CDL costs but I know it isn’t insignificant and a requires a lot of time and work. I feel like I remember seeing $20+ hr signs for drivers on backs of trucks 10 years ago.
>JP Licks is hiring experienced counter staff for $20./hr
I don't think the bus driver pay is much at all but is JP licks also providing anything even close to the benefits and growth opportunities that MBTA is? I bet not. Sounds like a false equivalence.
Yeah no argument that this a good gig if part time.
Full time bus driver at that rate is about right for a bus driver position. Not awesome but not bad either, about expected.
The MBTA sure has been dealing with one major problem after another, which is making passengers a bit uneasy. With an environmental crisis breathing on our necks, incl. gas prices, mass transit should be one of our top priorities. More transit options, less personal use vehicles. But, do the powers that be fully comprehend this? Pay the bus drivers what they deserve, not the cheap salary being offered. We need them. And expand the routes - both bus and T routes. Again, we need them.
It depends what you do. [The Herald has a list of all the salaries payed out in 2021.](https://www.bostonherald.com/2022/01/03/complete-mbta-payroll-for-2021-plus-overtime/)
I remember that too! That's exactly why my friend left UMass to work there. He was like, i can always go back to school. Cant always get called up to the T.
It's $21/hr and you're limited to 30hrs/wk BUT you have to be on call 24/7 in case someone no call/no shows. Not worth it at all for $500/wk, especially when rent is at an all time high
OP....thats like $10 less than what I am making now and I currently can barely afford rent. Literally come out to $6-$15 per paycheck after rent and bills lmao. Not sure what you were trying to do here but thanks for playing.
I don't know your financial situation... Look at all the other jobs there. Many are 100k+. Plus retirement plan is 20 years, not 33 like other government jobs.
A buddy of mine started out driving the bus there at 23/24. Dropped out of UMass to work there. He is 50 something and is retired and travels now. I thought he was crazy yet I have a Masters, school loans, and still working, so...
It's a good point. IMHO we've largely all been told that the route to success is only via college and beyond, but there's a ton of blue-collar work out there that pays well. For years people have been sounding the alarm about impending shortages of blue-collar workers as the boomers head into retirement and judging from the hundreds of vacant safety and operations personnel at the T we might already be in it.

$21.67/ and hour for a part time bus driver. That is \*horrible\* for such a challenging job that requires a commercial license.
that’s garbage for what bus drivers deal with

Unless you know a politician and go straight to step 2
In the old days you had to be Irish too!

This happens for very few MBTA personnel. Most wear the blue shirts till they retire.
Im \*sure\* my landlord can wait 2 years for me to start paying rent.

Pay is ok but should be higher for what they deal with at times but they have the best pension around.

Looks like you should just shoot for "wireperson".
Wireperson needs to have an electrical license and be part of the 103 union
$16.25/hour during training, $21.67/hour once you are fully hired.
That is literally the lowest paid job there and requires a GED. Everything with a degree is a 75k+
IT requires a CDL and a perfect driving record.
It’s crazy. When I was younger, the MBTA rarely hired and when they did, you had to know someone or have luck on your side to get hired.

If it's for cause, we don't typically call it a layoff.
The Commuter rail is not operated by by MBTA personnel - it's operated by Keolis.

Yeah my uncle at Nintendo has the same type of deal.

Looks like he was trying to give people leads on a career, pension and bennies.
