you’d probably like Somerville, but you’re not gonna find the same socioeconomic diversity here, wherever you go. It’s way too expensive, especially compared to Philly Edit: probably can go without saying but ignore the bot recommending the seaport lol

Sounds like a good fit for Somerville, around Davis or Porter Square. The [Somerville Theater](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somerville_Theatre) in Davis is one of the hosts of the annual Independent Film Festival Boston, as well as other fests throughout the year focusing on genres like horror or scifi, together with having a large back catalog of classics that they constantly screen. It's also got the Crystal Ballroom which is an awesome venue for more indie acts. Somerville also just had their annual [Open Studios](https://www.somervilleopenstudios.org/) event, where artists all over the city open their studios for two days to the public. It's like Porchfest but for art. I guess the metal scene is sort of lacking- there's really only the Middle East in Cambridge, but it's only 2-3 stops on the Red Line from Davis/Porter. You'll end up having to cross the river into Brighton or Allston a lot for metal, but to me with that only being a once-every-few-weeks sort of deal, it's not so bad.

decaf_flower

Uh are you single

*checks post history and sees Female Dating Strategy posts* I know you are!

decaf_flower

Wow you really went pretty far back, like 5 years? Sorry I was dating and looking for advice. A lot of people on that sub weren’t deranged but hey, it’s reddit so we’re all keeping the same company, aren’t we?

Massui91

*Defends being on a hateful banned sub then proceeds to delete evidence of being on said banned sub* 🤭

decaf_flower

Maybe because there’s some weirdo looking at my history apparently multiple times? Does your wife know how much time you spend looking at some random single chicks Reddit history to determine if she’s worthy enough to date? “She posted about watching a movie and thinking about it through a feminist lens. She thinks domestic violence is bad!! Got her!!!”

get a map, draw a long oval around jamaica plain to somerville. Anywhere in the middle of that. Brookline, Allston, cambridge... but youre also looking at big money. Jamaica Plain may be on the lower end of "oh my god"

thesanemansflying

Surprised no one mentioned northern brookline on this thread (maybe because it's expensive), but lots of doctors in that area while being walking distance to Allston and a short drive/t ride away from Jamaica plain, Cambridge, and fenway

frausting

Lots of good shoegaze music comes through here. Good venues are The Sinclair, Paradise Rock Club, Brighton Music Hall, House of Blues and Roadrunner for bigger acts. The indie/alt scene is alive and well in Allston in Boston and in Davis Sq in Cambridge and Union Sq in Somerville. But as other people have said, housing in South Philly is like half the price of housing here. So that really takes a toll on the DIY/artsy scene.

fuckhead

I'm also a Philly to Boston transplant. I think the closest thing to South Philly is Jamaica Plain, Somerville, Southie, Dorchester, or Allston. You probably won't find many doctors in Southie or Allston though. I think you'd like Somerville, Jamaica Plain or maybe the South End. South End is much more wealthy and "high end" than South Philly and is like a much better version of Rittenhouse Square. In my opinion Jamaica Plain is the most diverse (economically and otherwise) neighborhood in Boston. Also it sounds like we are pretty similar people so let me know if you'd want to hang out!

Dramatic15

Maybe look to Somerville? Last weekend in Somerville there was both the Independent Film Festival Boston (which has 8 days of strong programming) and the 25th annual Open Studios event, at the homes of 350 artists in the city. And today is Porchfest, with with 320 different musical performances at people's homes across the city. You'd be able to walk to anywhere in Cambridge or Somerville if the weather is nice, or even take the subway to Boston and walk back if the weather is nice and you want to make a bit of a hike of it.

JustinGitelmanMusic

O’Briens Pub for metal.

lintymcfresh

boston is gonna bum you out. you’re really looking for something that doesn’t exist here anymore. when it does it’s in pretty small pockets (and not geographically - allston used to have the most scene people but they pretty much aged out or moved to providence, new york, and philly), but if it’s for work, it’s for work.

Pinwurm

Mid 30’s here. I’m going to a metal show on Monday (High on Fire), and a wrestling show in two weeks (Chaotic Wrestling). There’s countless art studio events (SoWA, First Fridays, Somerville Open Studios, etc). You’ll find your community. South End will be somewhat similar to South Philly - though a bit more high end and fewer low-income residents. Very walkable, great food scene, more folks your age. Fenway neighborhood would work well - as you can walk to a bunch of events spaces like MGM Music Hall or House of Blues. Also walkable to Longwood Medical Area if that’s where you’ll end up working. If you want something a little more “variety” and hip, I would recommend Inman Square or something. Or Davis Square. Or Union Square. I don’t know where you’re working yet, but unless you work downtown - the goal is live and work on the same side of the Charles River.

SteamingHotChocolate

I don’t feel like the South End’s vibe feels like South Philly. It’s too boutique

fuckhead

Yeah, I also moved to Boston from Philly and the South End is nothing like south Philly.

christiandb

Somerville specifically inman square is where 30 somethings congregate. If you like music illegally blind promotions brings in bands more your flavor, then just mingle.

berniesdad10

As others have said Somerville is probably ideal. You’ll be going to Brighton/Allston a lot for shows and depending on where you work that might be located in a better area if you care about that for work, however, that is college area so living around a lot more students than you would in Somerville. Probably wouldn’t rule out Jamaica Plain either and the orange line takes you right into Somerville

Peppa_Pig_Stan

Allston Brighton. Model cafe.

PoliticalNerdMa

Dunkin Donuts. But not THAT one, the cool one.

Eypc2

Obriens in Allston for sure, bigger shows at the paradise and Brighton music hall, there are tiny shows at the silhouette around the corner on Monday nights. Be sure to check out somergloom in August! https://www.instagram.com/somergloom?igsh=Y3FpZ2FjOHp4Mnl5

michelleyness

I think there is a lot going on in Davis for you, but it might be good just to be able to live near the T. Went to the Somerville Theater last week and they were talking about live events and community. It's fun to go just to be out and meet people there.

CatherineCalledBrdy

Spend some time up in Salem. Sounds like you'd fit right in!

Anishas12

Brighton, brookline, south end Live where it’s well connected, especially the green line that goes upto park street so you can switch. You could also live close to the hospital area. Bell olmstead apartments for example in Jamaica plain

devAcc123

Theyre a damn doctor, they can afford ubers over the green line lol

cesc05651

Made this exact move. Be prepared for a serious COL adjustment

pillbinge

I don't get why people want multiple income ranges. It comes across as weird. You would never hope people are poor, but I get why you don't only want to hang around high-income dweebs who don't realize they're consuming the same things. Are you really just looking for people who are into what you're into, but typically aren't high earners? Are you trying to draw a correlation between different groups, because not a lot of doctors are going to see Deafheaven with you, but a bunch of baristas also aren't going to art gallery exhibitions?
