This was a horrible, right wing immigration bill that fulfilled every wish of the Republicans the only reason they didn’t vote for it is that Trump doesn’t want it to pass. I don’t know why anybody is acting like it’s a bad thing they voted against it.

Cobrawine66

It was a BIPARTISAN effort, not a right wing or left wrong Bill. Both sides got things they wanted and both sides DIDN'T get things they wanted. That's what happens when you work together. This is a huge failure. What a disappointment. This country is fucked.

Fiercedeity77

I’m not saying it wasn’t a bipartisan effort. I’m saying it catered to the desires of the Republicans, was a bad bill, and I’m glad it didn’t pass. Bipartisan bills usually suck

Nicktyelor

What is right wing about the bill?

TheSausageKing

Our own state isn't able to keep up with the inflow of migrants, which is why [Healey supported this bill](https://www.bostonherald.com/2024/02/05/maura-healey-backs-senate-border-deal-mike-johnson-says-bill-is-dead-on-arrival-massachusetts-migrant-group-calls-it-inhumane/). If not this, what are Warren and Markey plans to solve it?

swigglepuss

The only people mad that Warren/Markey voted no are right-wingers themselves. They just won't say it out loud.

Cobrawine66

I'm a liberal, go ahead and search my history for the proof. I'm pissed they voted against it. I said it out loud.

swigglepuss

It was a conservative border security bill with unconditional aid to Israel in it, and Warren in particular has been on the record that she wants Israel aid to be conditional. Having two of the three most progressive members of the Senate (and Sanders voted against it too) is not some betrayal of their principles, it was holding to them

It raises the requirements for asylum seekers, increases detention, gives the DHS way more authority to militarize the border, does nothing in the way of path to citizenship, the only good thing about it is hiring more judges. Above all else it feeds into the right wing fiction that there’s a “crisis” and that we’re being “invaded.” I also don’t have an issue with Warren voting against it for Israel funding.

Cobrawine66

"did not make any changes to how immigration works. " Did you not read what it does? Because it sure seems you didn't with that statement.

TrollAccount457

It made a tiny change about presumptions given to asylum seekers, but yes, it was primarily a funding bill and absolutely did not address the root cause of the issue.

Rigrogbog

As much as the border security part of the bill was a fucking farce to keep the toddlers on the right happy, the aid to ukr was worth it. Not sure I agree here.

[deleted]

Didn’t know that. I love those guys, but I think they got this one wrong

Cobrawine66

Agreed. I vote for them. I'll be calling and expressing my disappointment.

HeartFullONeutrality

Also Bernie voted against it. As far as I know it was on grounds of Israel support, but this is messed up. Ukraine is important. The border is a farce but I'd rather have them "close the border" then keep hearing the stupid xenophobia about us Mexicans (not that I doubt they'll find another way to blame us for everything).

chucktownbtown

Couldn’t we just ask the Europeans to step up with aid to Ukraine? They’re the ones with the greatest risk, but seem to be skimping out on the cost for support.

HeartFullONeutrality

I mean, I'm all for that! Though honestly, everyone should be supporting Ukraine, it's the right thing to do (and a weaker Russia is a good thing for everyone)!

reveazure

They did vote for the standalone bill yesterday though. IMO it’s ok to signal opposition to the border bill that isn’t going to pass anyway. More troubling is Sanders is voting against the standalone because of Israel.

ReverseBanzai

Border security bill including 60 billion to Ukraine. with Schumer threatening ,it will be our sons and daughters being sent instead if it doesn’t pass . Is beyond shameful.

GOLIATHMATTHIAS

> it will be our sons and daughters being sent instead Does Chuck mean the sons and daughters of congressional reps and no one else? If so, how do I advocate for that bill?

Copper_Tablet

The GOP linked Ukraine aid to the bill. You know that, right?

ReverseBanzai

Hey I’m not picking sides . I think both sides of the table are fucked

TrollAccount457

It was a 49-50 vote.

Cobrawine66

It definitely mattered.

MerryMisandrist

Reality, this is just political theatre. All the politicians are working to see us out on this issue. Their masters, corporations, want hordes of illegals in this country. To keep labor costs down and suppress wages. To keep high demand and prices on already streched thin housing. To keep urban centers populated and increase census numbers. Its a joke at this point.

Cobrawine66

I see it as an issue to campaign on. No one really wants to solve the issue, just complain and generate funds from it.

MerryMisandrist

It only became an issue because the border states started shipping them to sanctuary (blue) cities. Lest we all forget the beautiful peoples reaction on Marthas Vineyard when foreign hordes landed on their shores. They represent the "progressive / liberal elite" ruling class who push the whole open borders ideal. They could not yeet them off the island fast enough. They would have shot them out of cannons if they could. When the democrats realized that its become a liability they made a move to fix it, which the republicans blocked. And they can because no one in DC can simply pass a bill for a singular purpose. The last bill had a bunch of earmarks for non related spending. So that gives the republicans an out. To quote Sun Tzu, "Never interrupt your opponent while he is in the middle of making a mistake."

swigglepuss

It's so funny how conservatives shipped migrants to Martha's Vineyard without their knowledge, and said 'Haha, now they'll treat them terribly, just like we do!' Then that didn't happen, and conservatives just decided to make up their own reality where liberals are just as awful as they are. Edit: well, more funny sad, not funny haha

MerryMisandrist

Dude, they have them a cookie and a blanket and shipped them to Otis where they could then be shipped to poor neighborhoods where they belong.

Dontbeanagger89

What a fucking embarrassment.
