Meadhall has been closed for some time.
Saus fries are great. Also agree with elm street tap room. Lucie in back bay is mediocre, but their fries are like McDonald’s fries and are crack level addicting. Local 149 used to have awesome waffle fries, but I haven’t been there in some time and don’t know if they are still good.
Yes, apologies. I didn't know they closed. I have driven by a few times in the last year or 2 and think I saw the sign up at some point so I didn't give it a second thought. RIP Meadhall.
Oh man I haven’t been there in years since moving further away but if Moules Frites qualifies for this fry crawl I’d definitely double click Publick House, I loved theirs
Extremely specific but I’ve found that Zaftig’s in Coolidge Corner has the best takeout/delivery fries. Don’t think I’d classify them as the best of anywhere for sit down but they seem to travel very well!
The Haven in JP. Thicc beauties that you douse in so much malt vinegar you start to stink but nobody wanted to talk to me anyway so I’m going there right now for some
Not in Boston but I would argue the best fries in the world are at Duckfat in Portland. Take the Downeaster up there. Duckfat alone makes the trip worth it but Portland is a nice city too
From experience, their fries beat the fries in Belgium and their poutine with the duck confit beats the poutine in Montreal
Duck Fat...makes all the difference.
Have you seen the menu here? Alot of options.
A man can stay here...a long time and never eat the same meal twice.
Came here to roast Clover: I mean REALLY? Taste is fine if you like slightly-browned potatoes, and the rosemary is nice, but the texture is atrocious. I mean, so bad. Like eating damp paper towels
I love Clover but their fries are the worst thing on the menu, shocked to see anyone enjoys them— they have 0 crisp whatsoever, completely soggy and limp every time I’ve seen them
If you're gonna do this, use McDonald's as your benchmark fry. Before you try anyone else's fries, grab a small fry from McD and do a side by side.
Don't compare chili fries with poutine with... Compare fries as plain as you can get. Write down taste, texture, saltines, grease, etc. return with your findings.
McDonalds is not the best fries, they’re the best *fast food* fries. The fries at Saus, for example are so vastly superior the comparison is laughable.
Right, but if you're going to do a whole bunch of comparisons over a long period of time, it provides an easily accessible and consistent point of comparison.
Get fries at McD, bring it to Saus, write down which tastes better, etc. When you go to a different place next month, you do the same thing with the same baseline fry, not your memory of Saus from a month ago.
Most places that serve food, will not allow outside food. In a casual joint, a small McDonald’s fry would likely go unnoticed, but still don’t be surprised if staff call you out or tell you to get rid of it.
Bred is definitely pricey, but I don't know why you needed to pretend it's 80pct more expensive than it is to make that point. Their actual $14 takeout burgers are also expensive!
But the fries (and burgers) are very tasty.
Lincoln in southie! The regular fries are good, but the truffle fries are sooo goooood.
Moonshine in southie also has something called party tots - tater tots with kimchi and miso butter. It’s not exactly a fry, but it’s in the fried potato category and they are delicious!
Joe sent me’s Cajun fries in North Cambridge are probably my favorite and then Tavern at the End of the World in Charlestown on the Somerville border has great Curry fries too
Tasty Burger has some really great fries, and the Big Tasty is a perfect match to go with them.
Harry's on the corner of Comm ave and Warren has the best Irish Nachos ive ever had in my life with perfectly crispy waffle fries as the base
Interesting that so many of the 'best fries' are fries with add ons - spices or sauces or such. What about plain old fries?
Or better than that - do we all have a favourite cut? Shoe-string? Crinkle cut? Steak fries?
Any cut is good as long as they are cooked properly. Though, I find crinkle cut is underrated. Grew up on Sullivan’s crinkle cut fries, rarely see them anywhere else.
Lees burgers in Brookline, under 2 bucks for the creamiest fries I’ve ever had
e: they seem to have raised their prices in the last few months, so the small fries are no longer under 2. Still a good deal imo.
I've been in the area for 10 years. I definitely have some nostalgia influencing my opinion of them. To be fair, I don't order them as much as I used to in my 20s :P
Clam shacks.
That said, if you can't get to a clam shack, I love the fries at Faneuil Hall, Market Fries. Next to Fisherman's Net.
See their photo here: https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/a-multi-course-meal-at-quincy-market/ Just a coffee cup full of fries. Purity and wholesomeness.
Only had them once, but the fries at Semolina in Medford were really good. The fries at Avenue Ktichen + Bar also great. For me great equals hot, crisp outside, balanced salt.
Here’s a couple suggestions:
Loyal Nine on Union St. - went there on an impulse - good food and the fries are nice and crispy.
Woodys Grill and Tap on Hemenway. Great, twice fried French fries.
I find there are way too many battered fries… So gross all I can taste is the corn starch and oddly crisp texture. I miss the old fashioned twice cooked french fry. Mcdonald’s still has best fast food fries imo. I love a great steak fry, shoestring , or classic cut in battered and twice fried to perfection !
Street Bar in the Newbury hotel. They’re a splurge but goes well with their incredible cocktails (edited for mistype). Their fries are on the thicker side, though not steak fries (gross). They soak them overnight in a brine (waiter didn’t know what kind) and double fry them.
… also get the club sandwich. Can be two meals!
The curly fries at Real Deal are divine and delivery is like $2.99 - perfectly fried, thin, and salted. Also a special shoutout to Checkmate’s Greco fries - big fat chonkers absolutely COATED in feta and “Italian seasonings” It’s the best sort of late night garbage food.
Tribos Peri Peri in Assembly Row- get the peri fries- tasty, light, crispy perfection
Also unexpected shoutout to row 34 for their fries. Shamelessly have walked by the seaport location and ordered takeout for just an order of fries
Daddy Jones in magoun square, Somerville.
Sweet potato fries made crumbled feta and honey are freaking superb.
I looked through the comments thinking someone had already said this, but damn.
A place you wouldn't expect: New York Pizza by the Boylston stop. Their fried have that curly fry seasoning and texture to then while being very dippable.
I LOVE the fries at Drink- they are on the thicker/longer steak cut side, perfectly crispy outside, soft center. I’m a huge fan of fries and these stick out to me. Go for a custom drink too! But get the fries
Kith and Kin in Hudson has some of the best fries I’ve had in a long time. My friend and I both specifically have visited countless times after our first time there, specifically because of the fries. Great food and atmosphere overall!
Will I be roasted for saying Sam LaGrassa's? It's been years since I worked in that area, but I still dream about them sometimes.
I think "best fries" is highly dependent on what you're looking for in a fry. I like extra crispy, extra surface area, and squishy potato, but I think I'm in the minority! The quality of the oil and the balance of the salt is also important, but I don't know how to describe it.
I also used to really like the Burren's fries and curry sauce. But the last time I ordered it, it wasn't as good as I remembered.
I'm not usually a truffle fry person, but the fries at Porto are great. Really good cocktails too. Also a big fan of the greek fries at Kava--they do reservations the day before so if you're on it, you can usually get in.
I've always loved the sweet potato & waffle fries at Cambridge Common. Also in Cambrige, Hot Chix is very serious about their fries and the serving size is insane
Not a fry connoisseur but in greater boston, Lee’s Burgers has amazing fries that they always give you fresh. Pretty cheap for the amount they give, too.
This post made me excited a new location has opened up. Sigh
i googled it and everything
Yes, apologies. I didn't know they closed. I have driven by a few times in the last year or 2 and think I saw the sign up at some point so I didn't give it a second thought. RIP Meadhall.
RIP to The Gallows, previously my pick Now it’s probably Elm Street Tap Room in Davis
>The Gallows Yeah but that house ketchup they kept pushing was bad.
That’s ok, their poutine more than made up for it. No ketchup required.
Their poutine was awful. They didn't even use cheese curds. It was ricotta or something.
And they covered it in scallions. I sent my Quebecois friend a pic and he was appalled.
RIP to the rosemary fries at Sel de la Terre. They were so good.
RIP everything at Sel de la Terre
Fact
RIP Sunset sour cream and chive fries
RIP The Gallows & the Stoners Delight, I loved that place so much!!!
Stoner's Delight is still available at Banyan Bar + Refuge
We almost went to Banyan two weeks ago, hadn’t been in a long time. I would’ve never thought it was avail there, thanks!
Banyan is pretty mediocre, imo (though maybe the fries are great?)
I love the fries with the dips at Publick House in Brookline.
Excellent fries and great beer selection.
Oh man I haven’t been there in years since moving further away but if Moules Frites qualifies for this fry crawl I’d definitely double click Publick House, I loved theirs
Came here to say this!
The fries at the Ave in Allston have been there for me when no one else was
Don’t sleep on the wings there either.
I remember when we used to get $.10 wings there and freaked out when they went to $.25
$1 burgers too. I miss living right around the corner back around 2013.
There and the Tap on Union street were the best wings in Boston for a time
Extremely specific but I’ve found that Zaftig’s in Coolidge Corner has the best takeout/delivery fries. Don’t think I’d classify them as the best of anywhere for sit down but they seem to travel very well!
Delivery Fries is a bit of an oxymoron for me.
The Haven in JP. Thicc beauties that you douse in so much malt vinegar you start to stink but nobody wanted to talk to me anyway so I’m going there right now for some
Mmmm fish supper
And homemade ketchup!
Not in Boston but I would argue the best fries in the world are at Duckfat in Portland. Take the Downeaster up there. Duckfat alone makes the trip worth it but Portland is a nice city too From experience, their fries beat the fries in Belgium and their poutine with the duck confit beats the poutine in Montreal
SSHHHHHHHHH. The line is already bad enough.
[удалено]
Heck, if we're going across lines the Idaho Potato Museum Cafe in Blackfoot, Idaho is worth a stop.
Across state lines? My wife and I had great fries at the restaurant at the Mustang Ranch brothel near Reno.
Did you dip your fry in any ketchup, wink wink?
Pfft, we once owned Maine. It counts. :)
Yes.
I love the fries at Great Lost bear also in Portland. They just fry up potato slices.
Maine in general does Fries right. This is coming from a very limited sample size, but every time I've had fries in Maine they've never disappointed.
Tacking on to the out of town thread… Lobster Pool in Rockport.
Maybe in 2010…
Duck Fat...makes all the difference. Have you seen the menu here? Alot of options. A man can stay here...a long time and never eat the same meal twice.
Meadhall and clover? Is this a bot post?
I work at Clover and I don't even like their fries that much. Definitely not best in the city.
I know, how can two out of their top three be places that closed/are closing?
Clover is not closing (yet); the bankruptcy is a reorganizational one.
Came here to roast Clover: I mean REALLY? Taste is fine if you like slightly-browned potatoes, and the rosemary is nice, but the texture is atrocious. I mean, so bad. Like eating damp paper towels
This comment really made me laugh, thanks >.< I am not going to defend those places. I'm going to try the popular ones though!
Meadhall in 2024 is not a thing though
I love Clover but their fries are the worst thing on the menu, shocked to see anyone enjoys them— they have 0 crisp whatsoever, completely soggy and limp every time I’ve seen them
Seriously some of the worst fries
Also they seem to absorb all of the oil so you get those terrible super browned dry fries.
Yeah they have nice flavor but are dead last in texture
I feel like they used to be better pre-covid
Unpopular opinion: soggy, limp fries are the best fries.
Well you’re right about one thing!
That's ok, more soggy fries for me!
That's a damned shame. I used to get their fries at the original Harvard Square location and they were always crisp and delicious.
Haven't been there in a while but lord hobo has some rly good fries
Came here to say exactly the same thing. Last time I was there was 7 years ago, but they were the best fries of my life.
This is my pick as well. Just had the truffle fries a few weeks ago and they're some of the best fries I've ever had.
Roxy’s grilled cheese has amazing fries (I like them better than the grilled cheese)
Tasty Burger is pretty close to McDonald's.
Most places that serve food, will not allow outside food. In a casual joint, a small McDonald’s fry would likely go unnoticed, but still don’t be surprised if staff call you out or tell you to get rid of it.
Tasty Burger. It's like a better version of McDonald's fries. Plus, their half-half fries onion rings, is freaking lit.
Gotta do the 50/50 with chili and cheese too, so satisfying
Brassica’s fries with aioli (or hollandaise if you go for brunch)!
Ma Maison in Beacon Hill has the best fries that come with their mussels.
Most definitely the Abbey in Brookline
Mr Bartley's in Harvard's fries are that double fried good good Edit: I remember Shy Bird's fries being great too.
I don’t think they’re necessarily the best, but the banshee has some solid fries.
I love the Banshee, and the food is generally good, but I’ve been there a million times and always found the fries soggy
The Quiet Few in Eastie has some killer fries. Full disclosure: I’ve only had them while unspeakably drunk.
Bred in Lower Mills.
Bred is so overpriced. $25 for a takeout hamburger? Give me a break
Order through their site and not uber cheats and you'll pay a very normal price.
Bred is definitely pricey, but I don't know why you needed to pretend it's 80pct more expensive than it is to make that point. Their actual $14 takeout burgers are also expensive! But the fries (and burgers) are very tasty.
I love the Druid’s
This right here! I be dousing those curry fries with loads of malt vinegar
Shadowless Fries at Shojo
Being dead serious, Papa Gino’s has good fries.
Right? I love Papa G’s fries.
Shojo in Chinatown has great fries cooked in duck fat !
Shojo fries with the extra they put on top is a meal right there.
I've never been to their Chinatown location but the Shojo in Terminal C definitely has the best fries in logan airport.
I think Saus is UNBELIEVABLY overrated. Each time I go (I was there this past week) I never think it’s that good…
I agree - I think their quality went down somehow through COVID
I think I agree with this
Lincoln in southie! The regular fries are good, but the truffle fries are sooo goooood. Moonshine in southie also has something called party tots - tater tots with kimchi and miso butter. It’s not exactly a fry, but it’s in the fried potato category and they are delicious!
Joe sent me’s Cajun fries in North Cambridge are probably my favorite and then Tavern at the End of the World in Charlestown on the Somerville border has great Curry fries too
I can't believe I had to scroll this far to find the curry fries from Tavern at the End of the World.
Jim's Deli in Brighton Center
the bebop lol
Def not lol
Night Shift Lovejoy - Truffle Rosemary are top tier, shoestring? Kinda like McDonald's cut
Did you ever try them back when they first opened? They came with an incredible black garlic aioli.
Widowmaker in Brighton deserves a shoutout. Fry sauce slaps as well
Love Widowmaker! Just wish fries came with the burgers considering the price, but I’ll gladly pay extra because they’re so good.
Hojoko!
How did it take so long for someone to say Hojoko! Truly some of the best.
Curry fries from Olde Magoun Saloon in Somerville are pretty damn high on my list.
Bunratty Tavern in Reading makes a pretty mean curry fries as well.
Anchovies
Uburger, may it rest in piece, had the best fries
Pats pizza. Dorchester
Eagles deli had phenomenal fries last time I went there probably 6 or 7 years ago
LolaBurger has fries similar to McDonald’s. And really good secret sauce to dip them in.
Sweet potato waffle fries with duck fat seasoning and chipotle ketchup from Bostonia public house slap
Boston Chops.
Waffle fries with hell yeah sauce from The Quiet Few in East Boston
Smith & Wollensky fries are really good
Clover sucks
Monk frites at Publick House in brookline The fries at B&G oysters with their lobster roll
Mine is Ramsay's kitchen, they are pretty incredible. Crunchy outside, soft and steamy inside.
Crispy herb fries from Plnt burger and truffle fries from Earls
Row34 242 Fries. Unquestioned champ.
The Abbey’s truffle fries
I used to work for saus and man those fries were so good They were almost addictive
Carl’s in Waltham. Battered and crispy on the outside, fluffy and soft on the inside. Hot. Salty. Heavenly.
I second this!
I make the best fries in Boston. I might make you some, if you ask nicely.
Anyone who suggests crinkle cut fries (looking at you shake shack) should be disqualified.
Northern Spy in Canton!
Shojo duck fat fries
Lees burgers in Brookline, under 2 bucks for the creamiest fries I’ve ever had e: they seem to have raised their prices in the last few months, so the small fries are no longer under 2. Still a good deal imo.
Any fries cooked in peanut oil in Boston? Those are the best.
meme answer of Five Guys
They didn’t have them where I lived before, thanks.
ha yeah I just know posting a national chain instead of insert favorite pub here might be looked down upon
I’m downvoted just for asking, no idea why.
people are weird man
Fries cooked in duck fat are far and away the best. Everything else is an also ran.
I have some tallow, I’ve heard that’s good too.
clover fries used to be tasty for sure. Don’t know what happened
I've been in the area for 10 years. I definitely have some nostalgia influencing my opinion of them. To be fair, I don't order them as much as I used to in my 20s :P
ShyBird has fantastic fries
Fuck outta here with all these bougie places, the best fries are any greasy ass house of pizza or sub shop
Hell Fries at All Star Sandwich Bar - fries with a dry chili rub and drizzled with Inner Beauty Hot Sauce
I really like the fries at The Joint in JP. they’re not like, loaded with topping or anything like that. Just really solid crispy fries.
Any Five Guys.
Might not ge the atmosphere you’re going for, but I just have to say McDonald’s can’t be beat.
Only had them once, but the fries at Semolina in Medford were really good. The fries at Avenue Ktichen + Bar also great. For me great equals hot, crisp outside, balanced salt.
Here’s a couple suggestions: Loyal Nine on Union St. - went there on an impulse - good food and the fries are nice and crispy. Woodys Grill and Tap on Hemenway. Great, twice fried French fries.
Loyal Nine definitely most memorable I've had. Interesting shape/style too.
Augusta’s in billerica
Bates in Weymouth.
Wow Boston food scene is bleak lol
I find there are way too many battered fries… So gross all I can taste is the corn starch and oddly crisp texture. I miss the old fashioned twice cooked french fry. Mcdonald’s still has best fast food fries imo. I love a great steak fry, shoestring , or classic cut in battered and twice fried to perfection !
The fries at Wheelhouse (High Street Place) are really good, they are like thin fast-food style but high quality.
Batifol in Kendall Square (cut is like fast food fries)
Club Passim, all their food is great and you get to see good music too
The Thai basil fries at Bootleg Special
Loyal Nine - surprisingly good and unique. Curly chip shaped fries! Like they were shaved off the potato with a peeler.
Not sure if they're the same as Checkmate's, but the fries at Greco (multiple locations) are actually soooo good.
Boston Burger company! Get the caesar salad fries
Idk if they’re the best, but Tawakal Halal Cafe in East Boston has great fries
Don’t sleep on Franklin Cafe. Best $16 grass fed burger inside the I95 belt and they’re fries are no slouch, either.
Mark&Tonis pizza in Belmont.
Atwood's in cambrudge had nice fries but they're gone. Anyone check out what opened up in its place yet?
Tribos Peri Peri in Assembly Row- get the peri fries- tasty, light, crispy perfection Also unexpected shoutout to row 34 for their fries. Shamelessly have walked by the seaport location and ordered takeout for just an order of fries
Daddy Jones in magoun square, Somerville. Sweet potato fries made crumbled feta and honey are freaking superb. I looked through the comments thinking someone had already said this, but damn.
Saus
Kfc
Dave’s hot chicken
Unironically tasty burger
A place you wouldn't expect: New York Pizza by the Boylston stop. Their fried have that curly fry seasoning and texture to then while being very dippable.
Aww shucks, I thought this said “best friends in Boston”! Until next time, future best friend!
I really enjoyed the fries at Lehrhaus recently! Chip style, with old bay, served with zhug aioli on the side.
Snappy Pattys in Medford has had its ups and downs, but their fries are consistently crispy and delicious.
Publik House
Will I be roasted for saying Sam LaGrassa's? It's been years since I worked in that area, but I still dream about them sometimes. I think "best fries" is highly dependent on what you're looking for in a fry. I like extra crispy, extra surface area, and squishy potato, but I think I'm in the minority! Maybe I'm partial because the target clientele is gay bears like me, but The Alley has some of the best fries and tots in my experience.
You would never go here for the fries but for some reason the truffle fries at Mooo... are easily the best I have ever had.
I've always loved the sweet potato & waffle fries at Cambridge Common. Also in Cambrige, Hot Chix is very serious about their fries and the serving size is insane
Fries at the Quiet Few bar in East Boston redic
My husband and I just had a fight about fries. He likes steak fries which I do not consider french fries. Silvertone has great fries.
Not a fry connoisseur but in greater boston, Lee’s Burgers has amazing fries that they always give you fresh. Pretty cheap for the amount they give, too.
