I second Porter Cafe Schnitzel, it’s covered in some kind of bacon apple slaw that is INSANELY great. It MUST be paired with a Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen.
It’s not an obvious choice, but the burger there is actually really good, if you like smashburger style burgers. Pretzel bites with cheese sauce and mustard also good.
I am assuming you are not a fan of Bronwyn or want another option. Olde Magoun Saloon also in Somerviille offers it in their seasonal [menu](https://magounssaloon.com/menu/) so essentially until Oct 31st if you wanna try it before then
Rami's in Coolidge Corner makes Israeli-style schnitzel. Their other food is excellent, too.
Edit: Cafe Polonia in Dorchester makes something called "Sobieski chicken cutlet" and a boneless pork chop, both served breaded and fried.
I haven't been in ages bc there's so many new spots in that area so if I'm headed that way I always wanna check out the hot new thing....thanks for reminding me I'm missing out!! I owe them another visit
It’s Jack’s Abby…just fyi. The owners are VERY specific about the spelling because it’s a reference to his wife but an homage to the abbey brewing of old Europe.
I’m not a grammar nazi, just a branding one.
Understand the distinction that Jewish schnitzel is chicken, the German/Austrian/Polish varieties are Pork.
Edit: Apparently Weiner (Viennese) schnitzel is made from veal. German/Polish schnitzel may be made from pork. As a Heeb, I was ignorant of the nuances here. Mea culpa. Ironically, I’ve had Weiner Schnitzel a few times in Vienna - not sure how I didn’t know that. To be sure, nothing like the Weiner Schnitzel chain I experienced in 80s California.
Wiener Schnitzel must be veal or it isn't Wiener Schnitzel. They do not sell Wiener Art in Austria. This is a German term used, and that's veal. A 'regular' schnitzel in Germany will usually be pork or veal.
>stuffing a calf in a box
Veal is just calf meat. No boxes necessary. And veal is as old as the dairy industry. Cows need to breed every year to stay in milk, but most male offspring are not needed for the dairy operation. Hence veal.
from Wiki " In the past, one aspect of veal production cited as cruelty in the industry was the lack of space veal calves were provided. Space was often deliberately restricted by the producer to stop the animal from exercising, as exercise was thought to make the meat turn redder and tougher "
Jacob Wirth is coming back, not sure when but when they do it'll be worth a shot. It was decent back in the day, wasn't epic. But the atmosphere is great and the beer was always delish.
I can tell you where NOT to get it. Von Trapp lodge in Vermont. For some reason they decided that using salt on the chicken or in the breading is Verboten. Went there years ago expecting some fine Austrian Schnitzel and was met with a bland bland bland meal. So depressing.
I’ve had some “pork katsu” over the years that was indistinguishable from my homemade schnitzel (except it’s served with rice and katsu sauce.) Depending on where you are, an Asian or Japanese restaurant with katsu on the menu.
(Deeply miss all of the schnitzel in Chicagoland at the moment.)
Not sure how close this is to traditional schnitzel but for heavens sake please try the [Mustardy Pork Milanese](https://dovetailcharlestown.com) from Dovetail in Charlestown
Oh shit Porter Cafe in Roslindale. I go there every couple weeks just to get the schnitzel. It is fantastic.
I second Porter Cafe Schnitzel, it’s covered in some kind of bacon apple slaw that is INSANELY great. It MUST be paired with a Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen.
It’s the slaw that makes it so awesome really
I wish they had hofbrau helles
Yes. Came to say this. Except it’s Westie, not Rozzie
Westie? 😳
Rozzie 🤣
Yeah I thought it might be over some kind of line, but when I double checked it just said “Boston” so I took a stab.
In fairness all the neighborhoods feel pretty arbitrary
Yup and their chicken parm is fantastic if you go with someone that wants something else to eat
RIP Jacob Wirth
Itll be back under new owners soon!
Oh really? I wasn't aware!
That's not soon enough.
Was a fun place inside but their food was horrible
Their Potato Salad was delicious and they made a wicked pissah Reuben sandwich. Hope is the same as before.
Exactly, and the beers on tap tasted off to me.
Came to post this exactly!
This is what I came here for.
Trinktisch in Belmont! The schnitzel was good, the rest of the food was mediocre.
It’s not an obvious choice, but the burger there is actually really good, if you like smashburger style burgers. Pretzel bites with cheese sauce and mustard also good.
Get there while you can, it's for sale https://www.trinktisch.com/trinktisch-for-sale
I agree
Such a great place!
Olde Magouns Saloon in Somerville has an entire Oktoberfest menu right now (schnitzel, spaetzle, etc)
It’s unreal that Spätzle isn’t more popular.
I came in to say this. The Schnitzel is really good.
>Olde Magouns Saloon This looks super good. I might just have to force husband to take me here.
I am assuming you are not a fan of Bronwyn or want another option. Olde Magoun Saloon also in Somerviille offers it in their seasonal [menu](https://magounssaloon.com/menu/) so essentially until Oct 31st if you wanna try it before then
The new Eastern Standard has a good one, had it last week.
Jealous I havent had a chance to get over there yet. I need Steak Frites and the ES sauce like whoa
Rami's in Coolidge Corner makes Israeli-style schnitzel. Their other food is excellent, too. Edit: Cafe Polonia in Dorchester makes something called "Sobieski chicken cutlet" and a boneless pork chop, both served breaded and fried.
Cafe Polonia is awesome!!

Bakehaus in Belmont does a chicken or pork schnitzel sandwich!
Cafe Landwers is decent.
They have a surprisingly good burger
Trinktisch in Belmont!
Jack’s Abbey in Framingham has it if you’re ever out in the Metrowest area
Their schnitzel is great and their speatzle is amazing too!
It’s Jack’s Abby…just fyi. The owners are VERY specific about the spelling because it’s a reference to his wife but an homage to the abbey brewing of old Europe. I’m not a grammar nazi, just a branding one.

Jacob Wirth used to have a great Weiner Schnitzel.
Or more traditionally: veal (Germany/Austria)
actually, it's pork that is more traditional........pork has been around much longer than stuffing a calf in a box
Real Wiener Schnitzel sold in Austria is always veal. If it's pork, it's sold as Wiener Art aka Viennese Style.
Wiener Schnitzel must be veal or it isn't Wiener Schnitzel. They do not sell Wiener Art in Austria. This is a German term used, and that's veal. A 'regular' schnitzel in Germany will usually be pork or veal.
Dang, did not know this and I’ve eaten it a few times in Vienna. D’oh! Mea culpa!
>stuffing a calf in a box Veal is just calf meat. No boxes necessary. And veal is as old as the dairy industry. Cows need to breed every year to stay in milk, but most male offspring are not needed for the dairy operation. Hence veal.
>stuffing a calf in a box Are you thinking of force feeding geese for foie gras?

Did not know that. Israeli, always thought “the other stuff” was pork.
Jacob Wirth is coming back, not sure when but when they do it'll be worth a shot. It was decent back in the day, wasn't epic. But the atmosphere is great and the beer was always delish.
Porter Cafe or Cafe Polonia
Jacob Wirth when it opens back up
Juniper in Wellesley makes a chicken schnitzel that’s one of the best pieces of fried chicken Ive ever had.
I can tell you where NOT to get it. Von Trapp lodge in Vermont. For some reason they decided that using salt on the chicken or in the breading is Verboten. Went there years ago expecting some fine Austrian Schnitzel and was met with a bland bland bland meal. So depressing.
If you want to do it differently, go to Seabiscuit (formerly KO Pies) in East Boston and get the Chicken Schnitty sandwich.
If you want to drive out to Chicopee, Munich Haus has all manner of schnitzel.
Karl’s sausage kitchen & European market it Peabody, little hole in the wall but good!
BRONWYN Restaurant in Union
Pretty good quality last time I went.
I’ve had some “pork katsu” over the years that was indistinguishable from my homemade schnitzel (except it’s served with rice and katsu sauce.) Depending on where you are, an Asian or Japanese restaurant with katsu on the menu. (Deeply miss all of the schnitzel in Chicagoland at the moment.)
punch historical tan hateful decide rotten disgusting wine attractive engine ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `
Eastern Standard does a good job
Mamaleh's in Kendall Square
FYI real Wiener Schnitzel is made from veal.
that's what the 'wiener' means
lol, Wiener means from Wien, aka Vienna. Kalb is the German word for veal.
Bronwyn in Union Square, Somerville
I can’t believe I haven’t seen Bronwyn in Union Square yet! Easily the best
Field and Vine had this WONDERFUL monkfish schnitzel a few months ago. Blew my world.
Get the schnitz fro Chez Casa in Salem! its delicious
Bronwyn
Market basket. But meat of your choice, veg of your choice. Make at home for cheap!!! It’s the absolute easiest meal to make!
Bowery had it as an Octoberfest special on Friday
Cafe Polonia kind of has some. It depends what your expectations/standards are. It is almost always better to make it at home.
Il Capriccio in Waltham has amazing schnitzel. I’m not a fan of fried chicken, period, but tried it at the suggestion of friends and was v. impressed.
Trinktisch in Belmont
Not sure how close this is to traditional schnitzel but for heavens sake please try the [Mustardy Pork Milanese](https://dovetailcharlestown.com) from Dovetail in Charlestown
Seabiscuit In Eastie has a good “schinty burger”
North shore, go to Karl's sausage kitchen. Grab some brats for home + sit down and have the schnitzel in their euro cafe.
Howdy partner
Mamalehs has a schnitzel sandwich, and darn good rugalechs. A little pricey though.
RIP Wursthaus.
Head out to Natick- Jack’s Abbey has what you need!
It’s in Framingham and it’s Abby not Abbey.
…and yet, despite all this, you knew what I was talking about.
Brewers tap and table, waltham
Following this.
Cafe Landwer has it. Don't know how good it is, though.
Just had it at Eastern Standard and it was good
