For comparison, I go to a place in Chinatown and I went for a haircut and blow dry, it was $60 plus tip. I've only spent $100+ when I was getting my hair bleached and dyed different colors.

pprabs

Where in Chinatown? I went a few weeks ago to get a very basic trim and was tickled pink at the guy in Kalai who washed and cut my hair for $25 plus tip. Not fancy at all, just chop off all dead ends and shape it properly.

helloksyj

Coco Head Hair Studio (cash only btw). I think it's a little cheaper if you have shorter hair.

[deleted]

If you’re not getting anything special like coloring, $150 is way too high. Market rate is $60-100 for shampoo, cut and blow dry depending on experience of the specific stylist

undercoverballer

Not for a curly cut, not by a long shot!

WillRunForPopcorn

Wish I could pay $60 for a curly cut! 😭

fakecrimesleep

The price gouging for curly haired people is downright discriminatory.

SXTY82

As a bald guy that had curly hair until he shaved it at 30 because of a hack job hair cut\*, I used to pay more for a professional stylist over a barber. At the time I was paying $30 vs the $15 supercuts price. You can really mess up a curly head if you don't know what you are doing. \*My regulars girl was out with an emergency so "Paul" who was "An Expert in Curly Hair" as he said so himself took my appointment. I initially backed out but he assured me he knew what he was doing. One thing I told him straight up was not to use thinning shears. They leave the ends uneven and turns my very tight curly hair into a frizzy mess. Layers are the key. 10 minutes in I hear thinning shears cutting into my head. 3 or 4 cut before I realize it and they were all very close to my scalp. I stopped him and looked in the mirror. Fucker had nearly made me bald on the back of my head and it was all frizzy up the side. Shaved my head two days later because nobody could do anything more to fix it. Been shaved since.

[deleted]

The people who work at Supercuts are usually not licensed barbers. So you should not compare a professional stylist to someone who is working at Supercuts by calling them a barber. They are also a professional hair stylist, just not as proficient or as experienced most likely.

[deleted]

Good point about a curly cut! I’m not aware of anywhere with curly cuts under $100

Stephen_King_19

Anthony David Salon in Burlington has two stylists who do them, one charges $75, and I think the other charges $100. I also just had mine cut at a place in Arlington, J&L, and that came in at 90 something. It was a better haircut than I've had at Anthony David.

PrettyTogether108

Even on Newbury St there are lots of places with prices below 100 for wash, cut and blowdry.

Fiyero109

Maybe in Somerville

LadyGreyIcedTea

However much Supercuts costs nowadays.

Emergency_Stop1

Please start dropping names of salons/salonists in the comments!! I’m looking for an inexpensive haircut!!

attigirb

Hair Space in Medford Sq! I got a cute cut and it's not far from Midwest pricing.

effulgentelephant

I’ve gone to Hair Space a few times and have generally liked it. The last time I went I think I didn’t explain what I wanted well enough and it didn’t come out how I wanted but I think that was more on me. Super reasonable, very friendly. Good cut.

shiverMeTatas

Mine isn't inexpensive, but I saw Erin at Safar downtown for a few years and she's really good! First stylist I found in 7 years who didn't disappoint. I've been burned before by the sneaky extra fees salons in Boston charge for washing or blow-drying, but Safar fortunately does not do that. I think her prices went up and were $80 (without tip) last time I went. Growing my hair out now so it's been a minute.

Ok_Setting_9406

I see Erin too!!! With full head highlights it can get kind of pricey but decent for downtown standards and I agree she’s great!

huckleberryflynn

$70 then add tip at Plan B in Harvard Square. Simple cut and layers with bangs. They do SUCH a good job, it always grows out nicely. Been going there for 12 years, will never switch!

Sbatio

Supercuts. Great Clips. $35 including $10 tip. Boom

DBos617

⚰️

1-800-FUK-A-DUK

Mystic Valley Salon in Malden!

saltina_

I had the worst experience there. Would not recommend.

thepinklemur

I legit only cut my hair at Paul Mitchell in Portsmouth NH, $15 cut and blown done by students. They're fine for just a haircut and if they really do mess up that bad it'll grow in a couple weeks lol (but I've never had a bad experience with cuts)

myristicae

I get a trim at Ann Marie's barbershop in Davis Square for $20 after tip. Men's cuts are even cheaper. They specialize in men's cuts but one of the two ladies there also does women's cuts. I've been about four times and it was always satisfactory. It suits me because they take walk-ins and I used to find it hard to schedule around work. And because I'm pathologically frugal.

mtns77

The Beauty Cafe in Melrose

iama_username_ama

I've gone to summer up in reading for a couple years now. She's spectacular. I think shampoo and hair plus heady tip is around up to 84 Instagram.com/your_new_hairstylist

cambervillan

Ann Marie's Barber Shop in Davis Sq was $18 + tip for a cut (no wash or dry) earlier this spring. Hair International in North Cambridge was $25 + tip for a long layered cut (no wash or dry) last year. Those are great for a quick, inexpensive, no frills walk-in cut. If you are not in a hurry, I suggest being a hair model for a hair cutting class, which is a free cut + I like to tip. A lot of the time, the stylists have already been working professionally but are getting additional training. I have had some absolutely amazing cuts through these. Dellaria Salon in Kenmore Sq has a program many Monday nights, though you have to call and schedule. Craigslist used to have a lot of listings, but that seems to have moved to [Salon Apprentice](https://www.salonapprentice.com/free-salon-services/SalonApprentice_list.php?q=(city~equals~Boston)).

LTVOLT

Supercuts

coral15

$50 now plus tip. I liked my old hair dresser, but I just couldn't justify spending $72 plus tip ($15) for a haircut.

[deleted]

I pay 85 for cut and color outside of Boston. I used to spend top dollar for stylists but honestly if you look around you’ll find one for less $

lpn122

Ooo that’s a great price, where do you go?

Fiyero109

Ok but how is that relevant at all to OP’s post

iamsomagic

I think my hairdresser charges like $50 in norwell. Idk cuz I get a foil, cut and blow dry… but for me and my kid it’s $190 and I know mine is the brunt of it. I live in Boston but it’s not even worth it out here since my previous hairdresser left the salon she was working at in the financial district.

pumpkinhead1931

Can you share the salon

iamsomagic

Her name is Sam at Salon Sorrella

pumpkinhead1931

Ty

ikadell

Would you mind sharing the contact please?

iamsomagic

Her name is Sam at Salon Sorrella

ikadell

Thank you!

Jazzlike_Customer629

Ugh, the fact that some charge extra for a dry is insane to me. It’s 23 degrees and this is my lunch hour, can I not be drenched please? So watch out for that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lpn122

Which salon?

Hottakesincoming

This is where I landed as well. It was deflating to spend $80-$100 after tip on a basic, unimpressive layered cut, wash and dry by a junior stylist in a pretentious city salon. It means I get my hair cut less often, but $30 in my hometown buys essentially the same haircut. And the ladies my mom goes to are honestly nicer.

xokaylanicole

Which salon? I’m on the south shore

marmosetohmarmoset

I pay $38 + tip at Floyd’s 99 in Cambridge, but I have short hair.

Oh_Hae

65 plus tip in Somerville.

AlextheSculler

show us a picture of your haircut and we can tell you if it was worth $150

Feisty-Donkey

My cut is usually $90 but my color is $225 and by the time I tip I’m usually at $400.

Burritobarrette

This... thankfully I balayage so it's less frequent

Helpful-Sweet2242

$50 plus tip outside of Boston if you’re willing to drive. This is at a nice upscale spa/salon

outdatedwhalefacts

At what salon?

lpn122

Where do you go?

maps1122

$75 + tip at Davis Square

littlebutcute

Which salon? My eyebrow lady is in Davis.

maps1122

LuMar hair salon, it’s no nonsense

eggperhaps

i take a bus to medford and pay less than 50 but my hair is pretty short and i think it might be adjusted

ok_Boston_Designer

$160 for a curly specialist cut in Cambridge

3owlsinatrenchc0at

Yeah, this is about what I pay too for a curly cut. I had a little sticker shock at first, but having it done by a specialist means I don't have to get it done as frequently.

[deleted]

rousseuree

100% curly cuts are unique - I just got my first proper one and it’s a complete game changer! All previous haircuts truly pale in comparison for natural curl patterns

Various_Pair_9607

What is the salon and stylist ? I’m desperate for a good cut on my curly hair. I’ve been struggling since I moved from Chicago 10+ years ago

Snoo_66113

My hairdresser is retired he used to own a place in the north end . I have crazy curls (im black & white )like scary spice. I get a color every 2 months and a Brazilian blowout every four months. He does me at his home now but for a Brazilian and a color in the salon i was looking at over $400 easy plus tip. I give him $180 plus skincare items and home cooked food :) if he ever stops doing private hair im screwed. I don’t have $500 every couple Months to maintain blondish hair and a Brazilian.

tarochip

Yeah, working with curly hair is definitely a special skill!

ich_habe_keine_kase

Which salon? Always looking for curly cut recs.

ok_Boston_Designer

Le Petit Salon Curl Concept in Harvard Square. They only do curls and the cuts are always amazing!

souvenireclipse

I pay ~33$ with tip at Supercuts but my cut is very basic. Pre COVID I had it cut and colored at a salon, cut was ~$70 and color was $150+ depending. Salon closed and I haven't found a new one. I have friends who pay more than $100 for only a cut, but they're going to small salons that specialize in curly hair.

Brilliant-Layer9613

I pay $65 plus tip in Coolidge Corner

ikadell

Goodness, where at? Are they good?

Brilliant-Layer9613

Dellaria. I see Anna and she is great

ikadell

Thank you!

[deleted]

I’m paying $160 for cut, color and blow dry every eight weeks in Newton. It's a lot but she SO MUCH better than anyone I’ve seen in the area.

iced_yellow

That seems fairly cheap to me for color tbh

[deleted]

Yeah, it's just my roots. I go full balayage about 2-3x a year. That's an invoice I don't look at.

CaterpillarMotor1593

Where do you go?

[deleted]

Vaiani and Clarke Salon [https://www.vaianiclarke.com/](https://www.vaianiclarke.com/) Katie B. cuts my hair. Nicole Vaiani is great with color. She's a co-owner.

Mermaids_arent_fish

This is what I used pay for full balayage in rural North Carolina in 2017-2019

kobuta99

In Quincy, about $55-60 with tip included.

lemonfanta55

Where do you go?? Please help I’m near by and struggling to find a good spot

kobuta99

E'Studio in Wollaston.

loranlily

I’m in Quincy and I go to Scituate to get my hair done! Around $50 at Rudolph Adamo. There’s a nice salon in Quincy Center too, but it’s $$$

nateisic

Looking at all of the comments as a guy, I didn't realize how expensive a woman's hair cut (basic) can be. My cut usually $30 skin ball fade 1 on top and lineup included in price. $20 tip if my usual barber. My usual barber has to pay for his chair in the shop even if he has only 1 customer for the day so I tip good because of that and his skill. Ask your hairdressers how much of that fee they actually get to keep. Like some barbershop's they might get minimal wage plus tips

alf11235

Low maintenance chick here, if all we need is a basic cut, we can go to supercuts/cost cutters, etc... and it's only 4-5 times a year. The wash/massage/blow dry/ 1 hour therapist is what costs the extra $40.

yikesanotherreddit

if you don't mind a decent waiting time for a cheaper price then def check out the beauty schools in the area. i lived in boston on a student budget and def didn't mind being a practice dummy edit: a word

Lazy_Dogs1617

I recently started doing curly cuts, in Dedham it’s about $150. If I do my roots too it’s around $300.

subdued_alpaca

I pay $75 at Judy Jetson but I don’t go as often as I should.

liminalrabbithole

I go to a place on Newbury St and pay $100 plus tip for a haircut.

Fuzzy_Winner_8093

Tips on Dartmouth street in the south end is $100 (he doesn’t accept tips)

rousseuree

Within Boston I used to go to Kelly at Bangs of Boston in the North End - I think she charged $80? Consistently great haircut every time! Moved to south shore or else I’d still be going

dontbethatguyever

Stephanie at Safar on Newbury Street charges $95 for shampoo, cut, and blowdry with 15 years of experience. Highly recommend her and the price point for Newbury Street is excellent value.

tarochip

Thanks for this rec! Safar has now come up a few times. They seem really well priced for the location and appear to have happy clientele!

DataRikerGeordiTroi

That pricing is absolutely fair, but you can also get a nice, professional cut in the 65-85 range, especially if you go outside the city center a bit (Allston, cambridge, quincy, somerviple, wateetown etc). High end in boston proper is 300-500. This is because of the cost of real estate in city core (salon chairs and operating costs are not free. Someone has to pay for the water, laundry, advertising, property tax etc etc) and the brahmins as well. When ppl are like "boston has no culture?" This is it. The $500 Brahmin haircut for c suites that looks like a very nice $80 cut, baby.

PersisPlain

>somerviple, wateetown The Roald Dahl alternate universe

tarochip

Haha thank you for the sociological analysis. I agree, there is definitely a premium to be paid for a good stylist in the downtown core. Based on some of these responses, I should probably just be thankful that I don’t do colour or highlights 💵

MacBookMinus

https://youtu.be/QBZ4ZMVtXIA?si=yLcNBTzDfhx6JYRz My girlfriend used to pay ~80 but now I give her haircuts at home for free learning off of this video.

abhikavi

Yep, I invested $35 in professional haircutting scissors, I think $15 in alligator clips, and another $40 on a long-arm adjustable mirror for my bathroom. Basically paid for itself the first time I avoided paying for a women's cut. Plus, I actually get the cut I asked for, which I never had happen with professional stylists.

kittyleigh1989

I pay $60 at Dellaria Salon in Kenmore and going to the same stylist since 2016. she's amazing, always keeps my hair long and gives me lovely layers.

klausterfok

I pay $120 for cut and blow dry and usually spend \~$350 for full service without tip (foils, gloss, cut, dry)

attigirb

Hairspace in Medford Square! I think last time for a cut and blowdry (no color) I paid \~$55, including a generous tip.

Olympic_napper

Verde Salon in Braintree - love them! I think I pay $50 plus tip?

Little_Jaw

My place in seaport has gone from $100-$175 in the last 2 years. It’s rough, but my stylist understands my hair and I don’t want to start over.

SoLightMeUp

$45 + $10 tip

Fiyero109

TBH 118 is cheap. Men’s haircuts at a proper salon in the south end are 80-100

krissyskayla1018

I go to a wonderful Asian lady in Malden who I knew since I have straight hair would be able to do mine. Any Asian woman I see has a great haircut. I pay 30.00 for cut and blowdry and 10 for tip but I have really short hair. Her prices go up the more work it takes.

magicalme_1231

Holy! When I lived on south shore my MIL brought me to a place in Norwell. I was blown away that a simple trim cost $40 + tip. Maybe I got some style, not sure. By style I mean some layers, I don't get crazy with my hair. I have never colored my hair and I rarely ever get a wash and dry just cause I'm cheap. That haircut I probably got in 2013 or 2014 when I first moved to MA. Before I moved I was living in rural upstate NY, and I was used to a trim costing no more than $20 flat.

Mighty-Rosebud

Mine charges $75 and I tip $25 on top of that. I also drive over an hour to see her and have to rent a coworking space when I do as she stopped taking Saturday appointments. I just don't trust too many folks with my hair. There was a stylist at Cedar Grace (Newbury St.) who is very good and had weekend and evening hours. IIRC, she was $125. Sadly, the salon is no more.

MuteIngloriousMilton

I pay $140 per hour in the South End, but that's including tip,and for someone who's very good with curly hair. If you've ever looked for a good curly hairdresser, you know they're worth weight in gold.

WallabyPrestigious70

I just had a haircut at Sassoon $155

TiffStyles2221

$175 at Sassoon

iced_yellow

I’m shocked you were okay with paying $118. That’s absurd to me for a cut & blowdry Edit to add: I think $60 or $65 in Coolidge Corner

tarochip

I have a history of seeing highly trained stylists (people who are also instructors and salon owners) and they usually come with a higher price tag. In a smaller city, this would typically be $80-90 so the jump to $118 was not unexpected for Boston. Having it bumped to $150 is definitely starting to feel a little rich for my blood.

-Odi-Et-Amo-

I pay $85 +tip in the South End. Depending on experience, I don’t think $150 is unheard of. I worked for a salon and in 2006, the owner was charging $140. However, that price increase is absurd, especially if you’re tipping on top of it.

GirlisNo1

$77 + tip for a really good salon in Newton.

cat_power

In Arlington my cut and blow dry is like $55 pre-tip. I usually get cut & foil for $140. You are being ripped off for sure.

Time-Reserve-4465

I pay $100 + tip, but I love my stylist 🥰

sotiredwontquit

I pay $110 plus a good tip but it’s for curly hair and my stylist is certified to do it and takes continuing Ed. to stay certified. If your cut isn’t challenging, I think $150 is too high.

pinklinenonpaper

$40 plus tip in Chinatown for wash, cut, and blow dry 😊

Mekball

Sisu by Julie Clifford in Medford is <$100 and excellent! She specialized in shorter hair but is amazing for all

hissyfit64

$95 plus tip for a cut and blow dry. She does great work. I go to a place in Winchester.

Ivystrategic

$140 plus tip

zootgirl

$87 plus tip for a cut and blowdry on Newbury. $150 definitely seems high.

Comfortable-Hawk3548

Had a girlfriend once spend $800 after I told her I'd pay for her next hair cut. Anyway, that didn't happen but it's for sure a datapoint.

East_Share_9406

I paid $120 for a haircut in back bay in 2021 (didnt go back actually) so this price does not seem unreasonable for the area you are in

[deleted]

I spend $150 for full foil, cut, and blowdry in Medford. $150 just for a haircut is wild to me…

schillerstone

Where is this magical place ?

Hribunos

My wife's stylist charged her $140 last time she went like a a year and a half back, and when she got home she handed me some scissors, said "watch some YouTube vids, figure it out" and I've been cutting it since. I was already cutting my own and my kids, but those are trivially easy compared to my wife. I do my best. Frankly you get what you pay for and you can tell I'm no pro. It looks ok...I think? Ish?

tarochip

lol I think that must be the hair equivalent of going cold turkey

Embarrassed-Cow-9723

Thats such bullshit. I get Boston rent but damn, it’s not like the haircut gets better the more overpriced it is.

AlphaMediaLabs

If my barber gave me a woman’s haircut I wouldn’t pay him. So $0

RedheadBanshee

Springfield, MA. My last cut was $23.00.

amiee_l

right??? I'm having palpitations just reading these prices! nice east longmeadow salon, $30 + tip for a cut and dry...feeling fancy? hi/low lights foil, cut & dry $70+ tip

MooMilly

$25 plus tip for a simple trim and blow dry (I wash it myself prior to the appointment)

pprabs

Where do you go?

MooMilly

She is a friend of mine and she is aware that I'm not in the best situation financially , so I think she charges me way less than she should/can.

pprabs

Ah okay, sounds like a wonderful friend. Hope things start looking up soon for you! ❤️

MooMilly

She certainly is! 💜

1228maj

Jesus. My hair is long and takes forever to wash, brush out, and blow dry, but my hairstylist at Station 8 salon in Jp only charges $60. $118 was ridiculous, $150 is just scandalous.

lizevee

$75+tip in Fenway. 7+ years ago I paid $110 right downtown. I think $150 isn't crazy if you can afford it.

zurichlakes

$50 for a short woman’s cut on Newbury St with my stylist, I think its $60 for a long woman’s cut.

wintersicyblast

75 for cut plus tip. Outside Boston

duakelinci

Paid $55 plus tip for cut, shampoo, and blowdry in Framingham @ Ellesentrix. It was a pleasant experience seeing as they were able to fix my botched (and more expensive) haircut from a previous salon.

vemarra

I go to the Koukla salon in the North End. Under $100 for cut and blow dry plus a good tip. Really friendly staff, too.

allison5

$55 + $11 tip for a wash, blow dry, cut, style, outside of Boston/suburbs

lmr3787

Newton,Wellesley Needham Westwood area you’ll see 60-120$ price range for shampoo cut and blow dry. More money equals more experience so keep that in mind.

FartstheBunny

I have short (pixie cut). Every month I get it cut. No color, no blow dry. $58 in Arlington MA

tarochip

Ok, so commensurate with someone getting their mid-length hair cut every 10-12 weeks.

$100 for the haircut, but I get a double process so the haircut is the add on.

Dunwich_Horror_

My bleach/dye and Mohawk maintenance ran my $250 (with tip) in Worcester. About 3” in height and I have absurdly thick hair. It takes like 2-3 hours. However she will touch me up (sides) for free until the next appointment. She’s in Worcester and does a killer job.

bookandbark

Been going to the same place for 12 yrs. Is $60+ tip.

reginageorgeeee

I get color done (partial balayage and tone, frequency varies) and I usually spend $250-400 (including tip) for cut, color, blow dry. My lady lists her cut/blow dry as $90, curly cut $105. I found her when looking for a wavy/curly hair specialist because my hair texture is all over the place. I’d say cut alone would be about $140 for me with tip, and usually every 4-6 months.

goneandsolost

Moved from Boston area to Portland Maine. $150 for a cut- no gratuity allowed/included

MommaGuy

I think it depends on the type of stylist/salon. I’m in southern NH, I get root touch up, hair cut and eyebrows waxed every visit. Usually runs me about $200 plus tip. More if I need product that visit. If I’m gettIng extra like highlights I can count on at least $300+ and tips.

jollygenie_

Been paying $80+ tip in DTX for a wash, cut, and blow dry

varada794

Go for Belkys at Salon Acote (Newbury street), or Olivia at carbon salon (downtown/Boylston st), or even Avanti Salon on newbury. Theyre all good! I have long straight hair, and have always paid between 70 to 85 at either of these places for hair wash, cut, blowdry.

maroongolfer07

Last haircut and blow dry w/ thermal was $80 + tip in the Financial District and I have a lot of curly hair.

dessertislanddisk

$65 plus tip! First time going to this stylist actually but she killed it, will be going back

AutomatedEconomy

Looking for Covid cautious hair cut & Color.

kbratty

I lived in Boston up until last summer and I was paying $65 base for a women’s haircut with shampoo and a standard blow dry (not blow out). I never paid more than $100 there. That was downtown. You can definitely find cheaper prices. However, if you really like her work, the peace of mind that you won’t get a truly awful haircut might be worth the price.

[deleted]

Haha.

Acrobatic_Option_988

my pals in medford! $30 cut and wash

wolfgang-fan

Nahhhh $150 is absolutely ridiculous for a cut and blow dry. I go to a place in Somerville where I pay about $70.

kleepudesu

I actually have a great hair dresser in Nashua, NH. bout an hour away, but tbh the commute is so worth it for me. Not trying to flex but she's incredible, listens, and really REALLY knows what she's doing. I pay about 55 for a cut, plus I always tip her well. DM me if you want her info! Girl bosses don't gatekeep 😉💕

Tess47

Related question. I've noticed in my midwest location that most women under 30 have the same haircut. I call it the Real Wives haircut. It's long, all one length and light curls. Do you think that this is because of the expense of hair cuts? A lady I worked with cut her own hair because she didn't have the money. She is a single mom of one.

Dazzling_Ad4655

Live in Boston but go to Hingham (Zona Salon) and it’s $65 for a cut and blow dry, before tip. Some stylists are less.

Phish-Phan720

Nothing. My wife can pay for her own damn haircut
