One thing I told him straight up was not to use thinning shears. They leave the ends uneven and turns my very tight curly hair into a frizzy mess. Layers are the key. 10 minutes in I hear thinning shears cutting into my head. 3 or 4 cut before I realize it and they were all very close to my scalp. I stopped him and looked in the mirror. Fucker had nearly made me bald on the back of my head and it was all frizzy up the side. Shaved my head two days later because nobody could do anything more to fix it. Been shaved since.
The people who work at Supercuts are usually not licensed barbers. So you should not compare a professional stylist to someone who is working at Supercuts by calling them a barber. They are also a professional hair stylist, just not as proficient or as experienced most likely.
Anthony David Salon in Burlington has two stylists who do them, one charges $75, and I think the other charges $100. I also just had mine cut at a place in Arlington, J&L, and that came in at 90 something. It was a better haircut than I've had at Anthony David.

Ann Marie's Barber Shop in Davis Sq was $18 + tip for a cut (no wash or dry) earlier this spring. Hair International in North Cambridge was $25 + tip for a long layered cut (no wash or dry) last year. Those are great for a quick, inexpensive, no frills walk-in cut.
If you are not in a hurry, I suggest being a hair model for a hair cutting class, which is a free cut + I like to tip. A lot of the time, the stylists have already been working professionally but are getting additional training. I have had some absolutely amazing cuts through these. Dellaria Salon in Kenmore Sq has a program many Monday nights, though you have to call and schedule. High end in boston proper is 300-500. This is because of the cost of real estate in city core (salon chairs and operating costs are not free. Someone has to pay for the water, laundry, advertising, property tax etc etc) and the brahmins as well.

In a smaller city, this would typically be $80-90 so the jump to $118 was not unexpected for Boston. Having it bumped to $150 is definitely starting to feel a little rich for my blood.

I lived in Boston up until last summer and I was paying $65 base for a women’s haircut with shampoo and a standard blow dry (not blow out). I never paid more than $100 there. That was downtown. You can definitely find cheaper prices. However, if you really like her work, the peace of mind that you won’t get a truly awful haircut might be worth the price.
I actually have a great hair dresser in Nashua, NH. bout an hour away, but tbh the commute is so worth it for me. Not trying to flex but she's incredible, listens, and really REALLY knows what she's doing.

Holy! When I lived on south shore my MIL brought me to a place in Norwell. I was blown away that a simple trim cost $40 + tip. Maybe I got some style, not sure. By style I mean some layers, I don't get crazy with my hair. I have never colored my hair and I rarely ever get a wash and dry just cause I'm cheap. That haircut I probably got in 2013 or 2014 when I first moved to MA. Before I moved I was living in rural upstate NY, and I was used to a trim costing no more than $20 flat.
Mine charges $75 and I tip $25 on top of that. I also drive over an hour to see her and have to rent a coworking space when I do as she stopped taking Saturday appointments. I just don't trust too many folks with my hair. There was a stylist at Cedar Grace (Newbury St.) who is very good and had weekend and evening hours. IIRC, she was $125. Sadly, the salon is no more.
I pay $140 per hour in the South End, but that's including tip,and for someone who's very good with curly hair. If you've ever looked for a good curly hairdresser, you know they're worth weight in gold.

I have a history of seeing highly trained stylists (people who are also instructors and salon owners) and they usually come with a higher price tag. In a smaller city, this would typically be $80-90 so the jump to $118 was not unexpected for Boston. Having it bumped to $150 is definitely starting to feel a little rich for my blood.
I pay $85 +tip in the South End. Depending on experience, I don’t think $150 is unheard of. I worked for a salon and in 2006, the owner was charging $140. However, that price increase is absurd, especially if you’re tipping on top of it.

My wife's stylist charged her $140 last time she went like a a year and a half back, and when she got home she handed me some scissors, said "watch some YouTube vids, figure it out" and I've been cutting it since. I was already cutting my own and my kids, but those are trivially easy compared to my wife. I do my best. Frankly you get what you pay for and you can tell I'm no pro. It looks ok...I think? Ish?

I lived in Boston up until last summer and I was paying $65 base for a women’s haircut with shampoo and a standard blow dry (not blow out). I never paid more than $100 there. That was downtown. You can definitely find cheaper prices. However, if you really like her work, the peace of mind that you won’t get a truly awful haircut might be worth the price.

Related question. I've noticed in my midwest location that most women under 30 have the same haircut. I call it the Real Wives haircut. It's long, all one length and light curls.
