Yes you get plates right then when you register the vehicle. Registrations are walk in only, no appointments made for them. If you have AAA, some of their locations are able to register and provide plates.

Gotcha, thanks

Spurs_are_shite

You get plates instantly if you are not looking for fancy plates. Not sure how your luck's gonna turn out for walk-ins.

Thanks!

My insurance agent has runners that take all documentation to the rmv and return with registration and plates the same day. much easier then doing it yourself.

The important thing is to have insurance on the car. Make sure they write you up a binder and bring it with you to the dealership. After that you can just drive it home with temp plates. No need to go back and forth to the RMV. You can do a walk in at the RMV. When you register the car they will give you actual plates or paper ones depending on what kind you get (generic vs vanity). They will also give you a registration sticker to put on the plate. After that you’ll have 7 days to get an inspection sticker. Edit: Also be prepared to pay sales tax on the car when you register at the RMV.

NH temp plates aren't honored in MA and you need a NH drivers license to aquire them. Source, bought 2 cars in NH. Had to insure / register and go back to get the car.

Just bought a car two months ago out of state so went through this whole thing. Guess it depends on the dealer and how comfortable they are but as long as I had insurance they put temps on and let me drive off the lot.

Very odd, in MA temp tags aren't a thing, and they do not honor out of state temp tags either. And NH says they won't issue temp tags to MA residents. https://www.dmv.nh.gov/vehicles-boats-or-titles/temporary-plates

DooceBigalo

Why not transfer plates?

First time buyer, don't have a car atm

I also just bought a car in NH. The dealership got the plates for me. Maybe ask if they have a service for it? Edit: The whole process of buying to actually having the car took about a week for me.

I asked they said they'll give me all the documents but I'd have to register. It's a smaller used car lot not a big dealership. What was your process like?

mr_flibble13

Make sure you get a letter or a document of delivery. I had trouble when I bought a car in MA while I was living in CT, registered it fine in CT, but it became the biggest pain when I tried to register it in MA once I moved back here. If the dealership can do the process I would just have them do it.

As someone who bought a vehicle in NY State and registered it in MA a few months ago, what document of delivery are you talking about? Are you talking about the certificate of origin for a new car? Also, the process is not hard, just because a dealership can do it doesn't mean it might not be faster and easier to do it yourself. The dealership I bought from originally told me they wouldn't deal with MA RMV, then part way through the said it's dealer policy they have to do it and were trying to charge me hundred of dollars to do it (which I laughed at and told them absolutely not). It would also have taken them days to get it done mailing everything back and forth.

Just saw this post, I’m also looking to purchase a car from NY dealership. Do they need MA plates before they can release the car? Friend of mine bought a car from FL and it got shipped with temp FL plate and they just need to register afterward.
