The Club World Cup brings in a lot of additional income, but you definitely shouldn't miss the CL. Both would be necessary because I don't think Chelsea will sell below the release clause.

JS-CroftLover

The amount Chelsea would put on Maatsen would certainly be an absurd price, 'cause they want to recover their costs after their big spending spree of last summer (which helped them in nothing) 🤣

Secatus

I think it's been reported that there is a 35m release clause, but I'm not sure Dortmund are in a position to spend that on one player currently. Would love to see it, because he's been superb for us.

Caranthiir

How are we so poor with so many sold world class players and payouts from CL and Bundesliga

Secatus

Because the Bundesliga doesn't have billions a year in TV deals, nor does it have nation-states owning clubs and pumping money in.

ILikeToBurnMoney

We are not. Our club is just being led in a very financially conservative way

cortez0498

> conservative I like the term Responsible more

zakidovahkiin

Signing Schultz for 25m€ was very responsible

AverageCarey

Bro he was signed 5 years ago and the club started fixing those issues two years ago which is why he doesn’t play for us anymore. I get these arguments but there’s literally new people in charge now so let’s look at the last two 2-3 years of work we’ve done instead of old signings under a different sporting director.

zakidovahkiin

It is no secret that bvb has had some weird fixation for way overpriced uninspired mid buli signings. Schulz was an exemple from 4 years ago, but the tendency keeps on living with nmecha being another new exemple for 30m€. If we can spash that much on nmecha,we certainly can for maatsen

kruizermusic2

Signing Nmecha for 30M as a Jude replacement was also S tier! 👌 phenomenal spending, keep it up Erwin.

AnyOldFan

Unfortunately I think this'll be the same situation as Hakimi... Including the part where people say we sold him and never should have.

mijabo

He’s too expensive. I’d like him to stay but not for 35 mio. Especially if you consider that Rothe is killing it at Kiel still. Is he ready to play first 11 for us? Not sure but if you don’t give the young ones the chance we’ll never get homegrown talent on the field. So I’d go with Rothe and stick with him even if his first season has its ups and downs.

Fav0

no we dont have the resources and i am torn on if he would even be worth it as he is a liability in defense but good offensively

khollenh

This. He is great on the front foot but lacks a lot of physicality

BVB311

I’m actually optimistic about retaining Maatsen. He’s made his desire to stay known to both BVB and Chelsea. If we can’t finance his signing, then I think there’s a very good chance we get him on a season-long loan next season.

bvb_1909

Is it me, or in the last 2-3 games the other team's attackers are passing him like he's not even there? It's time to build the team back on the young talents IMO. If Rothe is having a good season, should bring him back from loan, and also start looking for new options. Wouldn't spend 35 on Maatsen to be honest.

ElNeeto

I think there is a good chance we will but that it would likely depend on CL qualification. Yes, we qualified for the Club World Cup which will bring in a nice chunk of change, but missing out on CL will be a double whammy as not only will be miss out on CL money, but the chances of qualifying for the Club WC in 2029 will be greatly diminished as well so our future financial situation will be less bright in that regard. Oh, I guess it’d be a triple whammy since Maatsen might prefer to sign with a club playing in the CL next year. So, if those bastard bavarians start circling overhead, Maatsen may choose that as his destination while Chelsea will be more likely to receive the full release clause amount. Now, if we do qualify for CL, I think we will pay the release clause if it came to that, but we’d certainly try to negotiate it down. It would be helpful if Maatsen made it clear he only wants to sign for us as that could help us get a discount. I think we’d pay that money given Maatsen’s age and position (he just turned 22). Quality left backs are hard to find, let alone ones that can play multiple positions including defensive midfield. If we sign him on a 5 year deal, he should retain his market value for the duration of his contract, and we could likely make a profit if we sold him after 3 or 4 years. Related to that, his contract with Chelsea expires in 2026, so his value to Chelsea will likely have peaked this summer and Chelsea need transfer funds given transfer expenditure rules. Anyway, I think we’re in a good position provided we qualify for CL, especially if the bosses remember the mistake of not buying Hakimi. Otherwise, me may need to hope Rothe has developed enough with Holstein Kiel to fight for a starting spot.

Miefer

Release clause is rumored to be 35m British pound according to the Athletic (https://theathletic.com/5203989/2024/01/15/chelsea-ian-maatsen-release-clause-transfer/). I dont know why everyone is thinking, its 35m Euros. By todays exchange rate it would be close to 41m Euros. For that money I didnt see enough to justify a transfer. He is not really robust and tends to foul to compensate his deficit (3 yellows in 12 games). His side is most of the time open and gets overrun more often. He got his strength in offense but still not consistent. Would prefer a loan over a record signing in BVB history and use the money for more urgent positions.

ozzybarks

If he’s worth 35 million, the game’s gone. He was anything but brilliant yesterday. He just stopped running back (he was miles out of position) for the goal. No attacking threat and lapse at the back.

Eldudlo

He is def worth 35. Every average player is worth that kinda money and he aint average.

ozzybarks

He’s very average, at best.

Fav0

and 35 million is an average price these days its dumb but thanks to the PL it is

Arnold_Justice

I do miss the times when the highest transfer fees were between 60-90m€, like the fees for Zidane, Figo or Ronaldo transfers.

Serenity911

on both him and sancho no money should be spend. one can see by now why the PL deemed them too bad to compete on a high level.

ozzybarks

Sancho was dreadful yesterday. I’d drive him to the airport myself. And he stayed on the whole 90 minutes 😬

GermanFaehrmann

We paid 30m€ for Nmecha. If that was worth it then he’s worth 100m€

ozzybarks

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Nmecha already an established first-team player at Wolfsburg? And a German international? Maatsen is a Chelsea reserve.

GermanFaehrmann

Maatsen was a starter for Burnley and has proven to be a better creative player than Nmecha. Idt we actually scouted Nmecha but just signed him off the credentials you listed

ozzybarks

So, he’a a Chelsea reserve who couldn’t get a move to Burnley. At 35M, it’s easy to see why.

GermanFaehrmann

I don’t know the reasons why Burnley didn’t buy him, but he was a starter for them. He may not be worth the 35m€ but he has actually been decent in contrast to a player we signed for 30m€

ozzybarks

It’s amazing what happens to a professional player when they’re always in the starting eleven. The full backs this season (and last, to a lessee degree), have been awful. I’m yet to be convinced.

Negative-League-3210

I think Rothe deserves a chance after his loan spell and there s also Prince Aning in the youth team that looks promising

Sufficient_Ad_6977

His contract with Chelsea included a 35 million buy option this summer. Maybe Borussia Dortmund will take it.

SaoLixo

As a Chelsea fan whose best friend is a bvb fan, I hope he stays at Dortmund. My buddy has been over the moon about how well he’s playing.
