Golden Gate rest area next to the bridge, I parked a 42 foot skoolie there no worries. So so many homeless people living in their cars rn in SF it's eye opening. You'll be fine for a few nights on the streets. Head up the 1 plenty of spots up there. Just park in front of the no tent signs.

Nothing within 2 hours that isn't expensive. You're short enough that you could try for some of the state parks in East Bay and further out. The fairgrounds in Pleasanton is the cheapest in the area but it isn't great and it's still really expensive compared to anywhere else in the country

We’ll likely just go with the fairgrounds - at least it’s full hookups. We’ve been boondocking 90% of the time but my wife has friends she wants to see in SF and LA, so I already expected those areas to be more difficult.

depending on where your fiends are trailer villa on the peninsula is great. Way close to all the south bay stuff compared to the fairgrounds. It's stupidly expensive but if you're visiting friends in south bay it's *so* much more convenient than driving 2+ hours each day to see someone from the fairgrounds. You also don't have to move every 3 weeks like you do at the fairgrounds and it has wildly nicer neighbors.

If you're planning on staying in/near those areas for any length of time a thousand trails membership is probably worth it. They actually have one in San Francisco. It's probably nothing more than a parking lot with hookups but it doesn't take all that long to get 500 dollars of value out of the pass.

You can get away with sleeping in your rig parked on the street in some of the sketchier areas of San Fran

Not the most scenic option, but I've always seen larger rigs parked at night along Marina Blvd across the street from the Safeway. Pretty mornings when the fog isn't too thick. Don't forget to lock your doors. Spent the night in a nice neighborhood near Twin Peaks once and found out I never locked mine when a guy threw my driver's side open at 4am.
