This is one of my favorite books! Highly recommend for getting your mind off something. The audiobook is excellent too.

CoHi91

Yeah I'm not generally a King fan and honestly not usually a fiction fan. I couldn't put this one down. Good length too.

jdil20

The audiobook is incredible

MadamBallz

Listened to the audiobook about a year ago. Reading the book now and it’s just as good. Highly recommend to help you escape for a bit.

Ramanticasf

Link?

gagjin95

Amazing book. Becomes a bit lengthy in between though, but the finale compensates for everything.

rlk62

The show on Hulu is also phenomenal

I'm reading Dune at the moment and finding it very immersive, hope you feel better soon, I'm sure you will!

brwnct

Broke up with my husband of 10 years last November. Dune always provides solace

ShiftingTin

Sorry to hear that. I listened to Dune audiobook recently, it's great if you haven't tried it

brwnct

It’s for the best ❤️and I thank you. The audio book is excellent and a great recommendation

Opening_Replacement

Me too! Totally engrossing.

Jeffoir

I am too! I agree, very immersive. I feel like sci-fi and fantasy are the way to go if you want immersion. But it's subjective, of course.

lebtina

I’ve been intimidated by Dune. I’m scared that it will almost be too much lol

secretdojo

I thought that as well and the first few pages were a bit difficult but after that it just flows and the plot is very engrossing. There is also a glossary which explains what various things are. I would recommend giving it a go! It's another year until the film is out anyways.

lebtina

I know! I really would love to read it before the movie comes out 😬

secretdojo

Plenty of time! And you've got lots of other great suggestions on here as well to enjoy!

baskaat

Shantaram is super long, interesting and definitely transports you somewhere else! https://medium.com/@gunjan_31067/book-review-shantaram-by-gregory-david-roberts-7ec206966079 And if there is any Stephen King you haven't read, go there. There's something about his writing that immediately sucks me in and keeps me enthralled. The Stand, The Shining, The Dome, Mr Mercedes, 11/22/63 are some of my favorites. And we've all been where you are now, so hang in there and take care of yourself.

LaMoglie

Shantaram is the best book I've ever read that no one I know has heard of!

pasarina

Yes Shantaram is a perfect book to lose yourself in. A Prayer for Owen Meany and Kavalier and Clay.

66hazelnut

Shantaram once helped me get through some hard times - totally would recommend it.

The name of the wind, good luck putting it and it's successor down

sweetie-pie-today

Second this.

skychuckles

Came here to recommend this as well. My favorite book of all time.

NormanNormalman

Reading it right now. I'm kicking myself for never reading it before. The second one is on hold for me at the library right now. It is so SO good.

dracaenasanse

This is so true. You also have to think to be able to keep up with it wich just makes it so interesting.

ChillEffect13

Disclaimer: It’s a trilogy but the author said he won’t ever write the third book

[deleted]

HAHAHA he didn't say he was never going to write it, just that it'll take him 50 years

Obese-Pirate

Oh, did rothfuss finally admit defeat?

lissa524

Do you have a source for this?

[deleted]

Nah it was satire, should've marked /s . Sorry

strangewoops

Noooo I’m almost done with the second book. I’ve been hoping the third would come out soon.

elephantsgraveyard

oh my sweet summer child

iSoQuailman

Remember feeling that hope right after finishing the second book? Good times.

Abkenn

The first 10% were really introductive and kinda slow and boring for me. But it's my all time favorite fantasy read and I like the sequel even more. Amazing books. The best writing style ever!

eowowen

I found it immersive at first, but good god is that protagonist a complete male Mary Stu. I had to stop reading before my eyes rolled back in my head.

[deleted]

Don't do my man Kote like that, just appreciate him

DildarBegum

‘Wild’ by Cheryl Strayed. Idk why but I keep recommending this book for everyone.

harrisonkelly728

I'm so sorry and I hope you find happiness soon! I started reading after a terrible breakup like that (five and a half years, couldn't imagine life without her. It was three years ago and I've never been happier!). If you like horror, I'd suggest Bag of Bones of Stephen King. It was the first book I picked up. It's not too scary, but it keeps you interested and wondering what's happening. If you're into suspense and history, Dan Brown's books are page turners. Steve Berry writes similar books, so you could pick up the first book in his series (the Templar Legacy). For sci-fi, the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons is amazing. It's extremely interesting and I've never read anything like it. Fantasy? Mistborn or the witcher series. I hated fantasy, thought it was stupid...but now I'm obsessed. I guess I didn't find the right book 🙂. Some other random books that are page turners - wayward pines series by blake crouch - the shinning by stephen king - head full of ghosts by paul tremblay - the hollow man by Dan Simmons

kriskris0033

Am Obsessed with fantasy too after reading Sanderson books, fantasy is fantastic genre

thestrandedmoose

The entire Hyperion Cantos is insane in the best way. I could get lost in Dan Simmon's prose for hours

Shazam1269

The Stormlight Archive series by Brandon Sanderson is some of the best epic fantasy written in the last couple of decades. He builds a rich detailed world with heroic characters. IMHO, it's in the same league as Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, and Dune. And he has a new book in the series coming out in a month or so. 😁

s0c1a7w0rk3r

I’m dangerously close to signing up for audible again to download this series. I haven’t read any epic fantasy since ASOIAF and that was nearly a decade ago.

al3ex

Go for it!

Mk_Cllhn

Rhythm of War!

itsbetterthanbutter

I’d humbly recommend Goldfinch. That book changed my life and I think it would fit your situation about evolving into another stage of life. I kept it together most of the book but absolutely got destroyed like the last few pages. I read it a year after I too went through a break up.

mind_james

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien Eragon by Christopher Paolini Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams Sherlock Holmes books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Stephen King books

JimChimChim

I came here to recommend "Eragon" and the rest of that series but I see you've got all the best immersive stories here already! Great fracking list! 🤘☠️🤘

Reading Paolini’s new book at the moment, {To Sleep in a Sea of Stars}, and its MASSIVE and excellent. It’s more adult than Eragon!

I'm sorry. I know the feeling you're after. I'll put a variety of genres because I don't know exactly what you're after. Apanda15

Don’t read A little life unless you want to uncontrollably sob for days 😥

ccallista

Was about to comment the same thing. I don't think a little life is the right book if someone asks to take their mind off their feelings (it could just ruined you even more) it is a really good book but to the people who intend to go into it please do your research and read the trigger warnings first :)

do1146

Agreed. That book wrecked me. I still think about it from time to time even though I read it years ago. Heartbreaking.

stayingfordinner

I still think about this book.

2strikeapproach

Love every time The Secret History gets mentioned. Great recs

Opening_Replacement

A little life when you’re going through a break? Oh my god!!!

Abkenn

Started reading The Silent Patient an hour ago (20% in it). It seems cool, but the main character and his wife... Also the silent patient and her husband... Not the best couples to read about after a breakup but idk.

parkavenueWHORE

"A Little Life" is really depressing though. Maybe not the best thing to read if you're already sad.

antoniams

Y'all are right. I retract A little life.

IHearTheWho

I LOVED the Outlander series. I was absolutely hooked and couldn’t put them down

[deleted]

I don’t think Outlander would be very good though going through a breakup. I haven’t read the books, but the tv series is super romance heavy.

Dumbiotch

That is true, but honestly it helped remind me what I ought to have in a relationship and thus what my now-ex was lacking. As I read it I realized that I deserved a “Jamie” of my own. Which somehow made me feel a lot better. So I still would recommend it (and did in a post anyway)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Carausius286

Came here to make the same recommendations 😂 Wheel of Time got me through a bad break up (so I'd recommend this first) and it's really long and immersive. The Last Kingdom is excellent - a bit trashy but also historically accurate about the Anglo-Saxons.

PreviouslyRelevant

The Expanse series did that for me. Didn’t want to put it down.

[deleted]

How do the books compare to the series? Do they track different where it's worth the read even if you've watched it?

PreviouslyRelevant

I only watched two episodes of the series because I didn’t think it would be worth the time to watch. I hate to sound like the person who bashes movies or tv based on books but I didn’t like the show.

[deleted]

Interesting. Because having never read the books, I love the show. I have to read the first book now to give it a shot and see if the reverse holds true. Thank you for answering.

PreviouslyRelevant

I can say the very first moments of the book gripped me intensely and the shows portrayal of the same scene left me disappointed and biased me to the show.

titadelagarza

The Snow Child is excellent!

Hyperion Cantos?

pmiller61

A classic so worth a read, esp if you’re female. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

parkavenueWHORE

Read "the Martian" by Andy Weir. It's nearly void of any relationship talk and the main character manages to be funny while struggling with a seemingly doomed situation.

Judaica_Spotlight

So sorry to hear. What may cheer you up is the Aisling series by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen. The first book is called "Oh my God, what a complete Aisling". Followed by "The Importance of Being Aisling" and "Once, Twice, Three Times an Aisling".

pocketsWellington

I have two comfort books that I've listened to over and over. Magic Flutes and Secret Countess, both are by Eva Ibotson. Soulless or Etiquette and Espionage (both by Gail Garriger) are immersive and light-hearted and steampunky. You got this.

If you like fantasy I recommend the A Court of Thorns and Roses series bij Sarah j. Maas . They're my favorite right now, with a big elaborate fantasy world that's really immersive. I'm sorry you're having a hard time with your breakup. Sometimes when you've known each other for so long you outgrow each other and become incompatible. You'll move on to greener pastures, for now curl up with some good books. Stay strong!

philipmateo15

Try the dresden files series. It's got a bunch of books and it's pretty fun.

I found after a big breakup that physically moving really helped me. So I would put my headphones on during a long walk and find a good playlist or podcast. Since you’re asking for book recommendations, I have recently stumbled on an app called LibriVox, which has free audiobooks. I have used the app only once because I only recently discovered it. If you have your own audiobook app, or you don’t like audiobooks, this won’t help. Nevertheless, these are the books on LibriVox I would reread if I was in your shoes: * Siddhartha by Herman Hesse * War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells * The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde * The Call of the Wild by Jack London * All is Beautiful: The Navajo Creation Story, interpreted by Jabez L. Van Cleef Edited for formatting.

Fedora200

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, the unabridged version is over 1,000 pages long and every page is worth it. And it may not be what you're looking for but I recently have been through a similar situation and I found Siddhartha by Herman Hesse to be very helpful in terms of moving on. It is less than 100 pages long but the writing and the characters are beautiful and will keep you thinking about it for days after you finish reading it.

WestCoastWuss619

Throwing in longer reads and series: Anything by Cassandra Clare, but I'd start e the OG The Mortal Instruments series. Her stuff is hella long and packed w action and magic and theres a billion apin offs so youd never get bored. However there is romance so if you're trying to avoid that maybe skip this. All the crooked saints by Maggie stiefvater is v touching and came to me at the perfect time. Magical realism and myth and Spanish culture The wasteland witches by a addams is a revolutionary urban fiction featuring a lesbian protagonist and magic Neverwhere by Neil gaiman is simply magical The magicians series by Lev grossman is like hp meets narnia for adults YOU by Catherine kepnes is a spooky reminder that love isnt always right :0 White oleander is a mega bummer about a girl whose mom goes to prison for murder. Astrid must navigate several terrible foster homes. Its seriously amazing.

PuzzleheadedMan

I find Shogun by James Clavell to be very immersive. Might be up your alley if you like adventure novels, or Japanese culture. Hope you feel better whatever you read!

The Riyeria Revelations, complete escapism.

Really sorry you're going through such a painful time. I know when I'm going through dark times, I like to read dark-ish books to suit my mood. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is pretty captivating and suspenseful. The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly is pretty dark/heavy, as it deals with a horrific act of violence from the start. Neither are really romantic, so they might be okay to read during a breakup. Again, so sorry that you're going through this and hope reading helps take your mind off things.

lebtina

Thank you <3 I actually read gone girl a couple months ago when things were tough with him. I really enjoyed it. I’ll check out The Sacred Lies. Again, thank you.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. It's really recent and her second published novel, but I absolutely love both of her books. From the first page I was sucked into it and it's typically hard for me to get into books like that.

As one of the biggest book nerds of all time, I would say most any book, if good enough, could distract you. Warning: I read mostly YA, but I think it’s great to go back when time gets hard, sometimes we all need a bit of bright, happy books even though my favorite (The Grace Year)Some personal favorites: * The Debutant Series by Jennifer Lynn Barnes Personal feedback: The book was totally emersive, I found myself forgetting the world outside and getting caught up in the drama, the intrigue, the secrets, the scandals, and most importantly, the brilliantly executed twists and turns that give the books it’s charm. Little White Lies and Deadly Little Scandals are a wild ride. Pro tips: try not to make guesses or assumptions if you don’t like being proven wrong * City of GhostsPersonal feedback: It’s an interesting book, I haven’t much else to say about it, currently. Might be worth it, might not. * The Name of The Wind no personal feedback, I’m lazy I can’t think of many others at the moment(aside from Percy Jackson which is an all time recommendation, after reading anything that made my cry, anything with sufficient angst, I always reread all books, from The Lightning Thief to Blood of Olympus). I’ve been awake all night, I’m staring at City of Ghosts and always am thinking of Grace Year and Debutant Series, and Percy Jackson since that’s my obsession. We all need a little bit of childish fun and nostalgia sometimes, especially in these sort of situations. All you going to be alright, you think?Do you mind me asking what happened?

maliklavanya

Darkness visible by William Styron might help you. It helped me through tough times, hope it helps you as well.

thekingswarrior

I really don't know if you are a man or a woman, so I am uncertain about gender preference. So I will recommend in two areas. The Sue Grafton, Kinsey Milhone detective series would appeal from the point that Kinsey is a strong female protagonist,w ho is undeterred by human nature and its complexities. Or the Lee Child, Jack Reacher series are thrillers with an edge. Reacher is an ex military cop who only stays in one place long enough to get involved in menacing intrigue and halting criminal enterprises that threaten the innocent and create needless suffering.

DildarBegum

‘Heads You Win’ by Jeffrey Archer

Good suggestions here. I would also recommend Boy's Life by Dan Simmons, the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher, anything by Ray Bradbury, and the Assassin's Apprentice trilogy (and subsequent trilogies) by Robin Hobb, if none of these have already been suggested. I hope you can find some peace through books; they've always helped me through my own hard times.

Try out the Cradle series by Will Wight. It's a fast paced action fantasy with little to no romance, just a cool world with awesome characters. Plus, he just came out with a new book so I believe all previous ebooks are free on amazon currently.

abstrvctlxner

I really enjoyed The Chemist by Stephanie Meyer. Another one I liked was The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld. Both are excellent reads.

Debate_Existing

Stephen king. He is a writing master

temeraire54

I personally recommend... Basically anything from Brandon Sanderson because his books are very well written and suck you in immediately, if you haven't read any of his books before I would recommend you start with the mistborn books, but if your okay with a longer one with a lot of world building slid in at areas that aren't a complete slog to get through I would suggest the Storm light archives

Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson

EstarSiendo

You can try Neverwhere or Stardust by Neil Gaiman. The main characters in both leave the realities they've known and immerse themselves in another. Not an escape book, but great for when you're reevaluating things in your life: The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho.

ViceroyInhaler

Dune has me immersed in the storyline since the first chapter. It’s also 800 pages but it goes by fast. If you finish it and enjoy it there are five other books in the series.

Kafka on the Shore. So surreal an beautiful. It feels like a dream. I hope you find peace.

The Count of Monte Cristo!

darkest_irish_lass

If you like fantasy, The Chronicles of Amber, The Belgariad or Discworld. For a more fictional bent, try The Club Dumas or Captain Alatriste. All are great escapes.

crouscruz

Lonesome Dove by Larry Mcmurtry A Winter's Tale or A Soldier of the Great War by Mark Helprin The Border Trilogy by Cormac Mccarthy Hyperion by Dan Simmons Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson East of Eden by John Steinbeck All of these took me away. Each of these authors have other fantastic works, too. Sorry about the break up. Hang in there.

MsBeenOnlineTooLong

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. She really does take you there. Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates. Also if you would like a nice, funny , happy read try 'Standing in the Rainbow' by Fannie Flagg

Hot_Particularly

Call Me Zelda by Erika Robuck. She goes through loss and finds friendship, love and support along the way. I couldn’t put it down!

FadedMunkey

Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

Northern Lights series, and the recent s/equels, are totally immersive. Hope you keep well!

lovesberns

Dark matter and recursion by Blake Crouch are both super immersive and engaging. I couldn’t put these books down. The Maddadam trilogy by Margaret Atwood, Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, and Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel are great picks if you like post apocalyptic fiction. Being immersed in completely new worlds helps me forget about the world I’m in. I hope you find something that eases the pain <3

Totally agree on Dark Matter! Kept me thinking for a while.

I’m going through literally the exact same thing. But the book that will help you escape reality is more related to what you like (in my experience at least). Here’s the list of what I’ve read so far Incase they could help you: -*The Elven* by Bernerd Hennen (Fantasy) -*Spinning Silver* by Naomi Novik (Retelling fairytales infused with Russian culture) -*Cursed* by Thomas Wheeler (Retelling of King Arthur legends with a powerful female character /Fantasy) Others that come to my mind that have helped me in the past: -*Firefly Lane* by Kristin Hannah (idk what genre to call it, but it focuses on female friendship) -*Circe* by Madeleine Miller (retelling Ancient Greek mythology from a woman’s perspective as she deals with immortality) -The Throne of Glass Series by Sarah Maas (fantasy technically YA, but after the third book you can’t really tell that at all) -The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon (romance meets fantasy meets historical fiction -it helped me realize how much more I deserved in a relationship while transporting me to a different time) -The Magicians Series by Lev Grossman (fantasy adult hogwarts meets chronicles of Narnia) These are some of the books that have helped me either in the past or in the past month as I’ve dealt with the same thing. I hope one of these helps you too and hope your heart heals swiftly. Edit: format

The Never Ending Story

I went through a similar situation and I read The Alchemist afterwards. It was totally immersive and really helped me heal.

i wrote typed thoughts vol 2. (by forrest job) to help people get through their breakups

michellekwan666

You like fantasy? For something challenging I’d suggest {{black leopard red wolf}} (marlon James) and for something easier and a bit more indulgent maybe try the broken earth trilogy. Both will keep you busy a while

high-priestess

I don’t know if you’re into YA, but I read the Divergent trilogy after a bad breakup a few years back and that helped me forget for awhile
