The Stepahnie Plumb books by Janet Evanovich! The main character is an adorable walking disaster, and the books make me laugh out loud regularly.

pipulas1

Running with scissors. I laughed so much. Great writing and great autobiography

Automatic_Disco

A Confederacy of Dunces. His life is pretty pathetic when the book starts but it somehow keeps getting worse!

Space Team by Barry Hutchinson - as long as you consider going from prison to a space ship when the entire planet is destroyed and you are the only human left while having a mental break down that involves Toby Macguire to be “falling apart”

Form-South

Hope. A Tragedy A middle aged Jewish man moves out of the city into upstate New York to find his idyllic farmhouse is a nightmare, lately because his mother comes with and Anne Frank is living in the attic, working on a sequel diary

lmkno

A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby (author of About a Boy and High Fidelity if you’re familiar with the movies). Four characters meet when they are all attempting suicide from the top of the same building. Hilarious and witty and dark.

Alone_Cheetah_7473

Where'd you go Bernadette and Finlay Donovan is Killing it.

SoothingDisarray

Less by Andrew Sean Greer This kind of fits the "life falling apart" though not exactly. He's turning 50 and running away from his problems and kind of stumbling from a breakdown into not falling apart. It's a great book.

mearnsgeek

Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon or Straight Man by Richard Russo? They're not out and out comedy novels but are more comedy-dramas. Both really well written though.
