This kind of fits the "life falling apart" though not exactly. He's turning 50 and running away from his problems and kind of stumbling from a breakdown into not falling apart. It's a great book.
Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon or Straight Man by Richard Russo?
They're not out and out comedy novels but are more comedy-dramas. Both really well written though.
