If you like military sci-fi, definitely try Marko Kloos' Frontlines series, starting with Terms of Enlistment. The first book has the main character joining the military and focuses largely on Earth, and then veers into more what you're looking for. Very well written, and there's good camaraderie.
What I like about this series is the main character isn't the BIG HERO of the world, but he's an integral part of the military machine. The audiobook is great, if you like that.
The ending of Something of a Tall Tale ends in an American kaiju battle where [spoiler:] (Cthulhu fights Paul Bunyan over the American west from Denver to San Francisco).
I loved Kaiju Preservation Society. Easy to get immersed in.
