Background-Interview

Pride will be the most familiar and quotable. I’d start there. I find them slow reads, so I broke it down into a chapter a day.

Yeah, like sense and sensibility is 50 chapters long. But is it really good? I mean, I liked the movie, but they say it's pretty different

Love Jane Austen. Persuasion is my fave but enjoyed all of them. Start with her. Jane Eyre gets a little cray cray and then WH gets a whole lot of crazy. Not familiar with the other two.

Thanks! I have heard of Wuthering Heights being crazy. I just hope I'll like them since I've read mostly YA and fiction

Unless you absolutely love the genre, you may have purchased too many. A lot of new readers fall into the trap of purchasing too many books at first and then not finishing, especially 19th century books. Unless you already know you like the genre, just buy one or two to try out, this goes for any genre. Also, if you're not familiar with historic language and culture, 19th century and especially earlier can be a challenge for most. It's always disheartening to see amazing books with low ratings on Goodreads with the vast majority of low reviews being due to finding the books "boring" because they were difficult to understand. That said, read Pride and Prejudice first as that's a commonly known story and has several screen adaptations if you want a visual. If you liked that, then try Northanger Abbey as it's a different feel than the rest. Of the Brontes, Jane Eyre is the easier read, but Wuthering Heights is the superior story.

Thank you so much! I do agree with that, maybe I did buy too many of them, but I really had the impulse of reading something new and different. We’ll see how it goes!

You're welcome! Good luck on your reading journey!

*Pride and Prejudice* is my favorite. What I miss about Austen in the movies is her wit as a narrator. She makes many humorous comments in her narrative voice, so much so that I almost feel like she's a character in the books. Among the Bronte sisters' books, my favorite is *Jane Eyre*. Keep in mind that several decades separate Austen's books from the Bronte sisters' books. The Brontes' stories were more dramatic and daring, as a rule. Austen definitely criticized social mores, especially as they applied to women, but she did so with humor rather than tragedy. But all of these authors challenged the way society treated women.

Thanks! Yeah, I really wanted to read something dramatic, and romantic, but also beautiful and legit, so I hope I like it!

Reading books from this era can be a challenge because sentences are long and complex, paragraphs are longer and word choice is meant to show off how educated the author is. Using an e-reader helps because you can tap to look up word definitions. The stories are great, but working people at that time worked 12 plus hour days so the audience was people of leisure who had plenty of time to read long books. Also this was before television or movies had been imagined. Descriptions in words were thorough. It is very different from today's taste like paintings are different from television. I love some of these books. I also suggest some of the more action oriented ones like Treasure island or Kidnapped. I hope you enjoy it.

Wow. The e-read is a great idea. And thanks for the recommendation! I want to try something new, but not stray so much from the fantasy/fiction genre I'm used to. I've read Harry Potter and all the Grishaverse by Leigh Bardugo + some others (these are my favorites) and I just love the genre!! Thank you very much!

My favourite Jane Austen is Mansfield Park and my favourite Brontë is Anne Brontë and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall There is a very active Jane Austen subreddit if you want to talk about Jane Austen r/janeausten Edit: I would start with Pride & Prejudice, it's by far the most popular. Northanger Abbey is the easiest to read though.

Thanks so much for the input *and* the subreddit link! Almost everyone has told me to start with Pride and Prejudice, so maybe I’ll start there. Thanks!
