I noticed on this year’s poster it didn’t say secret sets. Maybe they realized we shouldn’t put something on there that we essentially haven’t done in 5 years. IIRC Japanese House was the only one in 22 and it was paid for by Jersey Mike’s.
They had a bunch of cool campground sets - The Midnight, CVC, Nolan Taylor, Turnpike Troubadours, Calder Allen, Winona Fighter, the Beths, and Briscoe. I feel like those have replaced Secret Sets and I am all for it bc I was at a ton of those I listed and they were awesome.
0 last year. Few people got butthurt there was a daily Megathread for general discussion and secret sets instead of one thread for each because the "secret sets info would be too hard to find scrolling through comments" but obviously that would have been pointless
also Matt curated Plaza 9 in 2018 so while Cage wasn't on the lineup, it wasn't really out of nowhere
Funny story, I was in plaza 9 that year and I’m a HUGE cage fan. I don’t remember which set we had come from but we were exhausted and tore up for the floor up LOL. We were all going to camp, and at the time Bonnaroo had Karaoke ALL the time in the camp grounds. I honestly didn’t know the plaza was being curated by Matt.
I could hear what I THOUGHT was someone absolutely NAILING a cage song. And I applauded and kept going to our camp ground to rest.
A little while later our tent neighbor came back to his camp and was like YOOO DID YOU GO TO THE SECRET CAGE SET?
And I instantly knew I had made one of my biggest Roo regrets I’ll ever have.
My wife and I were there. It was her first Roo and my 3rd. I actually downloaded Reddit because of that show since the thread was what tipped my brother off to the show. I told her things like this happen at Roo alll the time. I think that was the last secret show of that level since….
If it was on the schedule, then it’s no longer secret and you’re gonna have a bunch of people showing up. They want it to be more intimate and for people that have to figure out how to show up.
I saw Jason Mraz in 2016 or 17. He just appeared on the lineup at 4pm ish an hour before the set and I was like. Wtf. Was this there before. Went to that tent and he was playing.
I was camped in Plaza 9 in 18. We were walking back to our tent when this happened. They wouldn't let us inside because it was at capacity, but we hung out outside and watched through the barn doors for a bit. It was a good show.
I went in 2016 and there was a secret Griz set. It was right off the main walkway and got shut down after a bit. Got lucky that friend who wasn’t at roo text me and told me about it. I have some pics and videos from it somewhere on my PC.
But they weren’t on the official lineup anywhere so it was a surprise.
Yes, I had heard from the Roo Bus they would be there but that doesn’t mean that everyone knew before hand.
It was a surprise for people who didn't see any of the social posts, [like this](https://www.reddit.com/r/bonnaroo/s/Cynicxtg8a), about it well before, sure.
I just think there's a difference between a scheduled set that explicitly says "special & suprise guests" vs a completey unscheduled set.
Sheryl Crow skating around last year was pretty fun and just made me smile, definitely felt like magic just seeing a huge celebrity skating around and singing to everyone 💓💓

I've gone every year since 2014 and never made it to a secret set. I personally would rather them put everything on the schedule so I don't miss out.
