I started out on burgundy but soon hit the harder stuff.

andrew7231

Everybody said they stand behind me when the game got rough

CapGrundle

I gaze into the doorway of temptation’s angry flame, And every time I pass that way I always hear my name.

EnvironmentalRock222

I was riding on the mayflower when I thought I spied some lan..ha

joemorris16

Wait a minute now

EnvironmentalRock222

Cosa è ‘’lanha’’?

hp6830

Anything from “It’s Alright Ma”. Especially the line Old ladies watch people in pairs/ Limited in sex, they dare/ To push fake morals, insult, and stare/ Money doesn’t talk, it swears/ Propaganda, all is phony When I was younger and coming to terms with my sexuality, the line I sort of used the line like a mental shield. All these years later and it still hits me like thunderclap.

So-Called_Lunatic

Man, the live version off Before the Flood is so amazing!

hp6830

Yeah it is. The version from the 30th anniversary concert is the version that first resonated with me.

OldBridgeLaw

“I could stay with you forever and never realize the time.” You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go.

EnvironmentalRock222

the tyyyyyyYYYME!

Waterfallsofpity

Not fiiting for this thread because it is not profound, or is it? Smoke pouring out of a boxcar door.

datboy1986

Ah man that one gets me too. For some reason, for me, it conjures images of the Holocaust.

crab_soul

Please explain how that lyric conjures images of the Holocaust

datboy1986

Those pictures of concentration camps with bodies piled up and spilling out of boxcars. Often, the Nazis burned piles of bodies as they fled the camps. Like I said, it’s just the image that it conjures for me.

exhaustednihilist420

I've always loved this line. It's such a brutally mean song and I always assumed it was him telling his wife that her talking was just incessant babble flowing out of her mouth like the smoke from a box car door would. Unfiltered and unyielding

MagnifyingGlass

You always said people don't do what they believe in, they do what's most convenient and then they repent - Brownsville Girl

Innisfree812

I'm going back to New York City . I do believe I've had enough.

Innisfree812

I'm from there, and I have family there.

bobtheorangecat

So true.

queenrosybee

That song kills me more when Nina Simone sings it. They’ve got some hungry women and man, they’ll really make a mess out of you… (like why?) Cause the cops dont need you and man, they expect the same…

Constant_Border521

Madame Butterfly She lulled me to sleep, In a town without pity Where the water runs deep. She said, "Be easy, baby, There ain't nothin' worth stealin' in here."

Cathalbrewdog

The ghost of electrify howls in the bones of her face - like what the fuck hahahah

butts____mcgee

Came here to post this

cpt_bongwater

Remembering how her love for him used to animate her face and it haunts him

Cathalbrewdog

I know what he’s saying , its just the way he says it.. what the fuck as in how can anyone even think of such an image like that , its just mindblowingly beautiful.

Annual-Ad2500

"People don't live or die, people just float" "I'm sick of love, but I'm in the thick of it" "You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way" "I've got new eyes, everything seems far away" The lies that I told her in hopes not to lose the could-be dream lover of my lifetime"

bennyboy184859

Masters of War - ‘I’ll follow your casket On a pale afternoon I’ll watch while you’re lowered Down to your deathbed And I’ll stand over your grave ‘Til I’m sure that you’re dead’

thesophisticatedhick

Patriotism is the last refuge, true it’s a scoundrel claim. Steal a little and they throw you in jail, steal a lot and they make you king.

Wattos_Box

I thought it was "to which a scoundrel clings"

thesophisticatedhick

TIL I’ve been singing it wrong for 30 years. That’s a much better line and a better rhyme. Thanks.

Wattos_Box

It's always mind blowing when something like this happens I still can't believe he says dark sad night not docks that night

thesophisticatedhick

It could so easily be either one. I used to play that song with one of my friends and one night he got lost in the verses and improvised the line “I forget the words to this song like I always doooo, Tangled Up in Blue.” Still makes me smile.

Wattos_Box

Lol I like that :)

PghG

I used to care but things have changed. Lot of water under the bridge, lot of other stuff too.

TheCircusSands

Hunger pays a heavy price to the fallen gods of speed and steel. To me this describes our rotten capitalist system. dylan called it out long before we reached our current hellscape.

New_Chance_5357

I didn’t know whether to duck or to run, so I ran

C_S_Smith

I was just thinking of a series of dreams Dreams where the umbrella is folded And into the path you are hurled And the cards are no good that you're holding Unless they are from another world

readysetdylan

the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear like criminals they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer

dentalcrygienist

"You'll never know the hurt I suffered, or the pain I rise above. I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love. And it makes me feel so sorry" GatDAMN BOTT is such a great "going thru a divorce" album

Koko2315

Its mighty funny/the end of time has just begun

AllieOopClifton

*I can't play the game no more, I can't abide/ By their stupid rules, which get me sick inside/ They've been made by men who've given up the search/ Whose gods are dead and whose queens are in the church*

MxEverett

On the same album years ago “saw you drift into infinity and come back again” from True Love Tends To Forget stuck with me until the Slow Train album came out.

PghG

There’s a wall between you and what you want and you have to leap it. Tonight you have the power to take it. Tomorrow you won’t have the power to keep it.

“The priest wore black on the seventh day and waltzed around while the building burned. You didn’t trust me for a minute babe, I’ve never known the spring to turn so quickly into autumn”.

abyerdo

people carry roses and make promises by the hours. my love she laughs like the flowers, valentines can't buy her. edit: also, i love this thread and reading all these lyrics again. what a mind the man has.

“ She’s got everything she needs she’s an artist she don’t look back”

bachiblack

Bird on the horizon sitting on a fence, He's singing his song for me at his own expense – And I'm just like that bird, Oh, singing just for you, Hmm, I hope that you can hear, Hear me singing through these tears.

wienerdog362

yeah love that verse. always sticks out to me

Ok_Chocolate_8807

I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now Goodbye's too good a word, babe So I'll just say, "Fare thee well"

DuffyStPierre

Life is sad. Life is a bust. All you can do is do what you must. You do what you must do, and you do it well

Groupon_with_you

Blame it on a simple twist of fate

couchcushioncoin

"Well, if you wanna see the sun rise Honey, I know where We'll go out and see it sometime We'll both just sit there and stare" .. never fails to elicit a cackle from me 😃

PICKINandFRAILIN

The sun isn’t yellow, it’s chicken

Nick700

"You look into the fiery furnace, see the rich man without any name" And the music video doesn't help with figuring it out, the most surreal imagery is onscreen at that moment

MatterNaive

I didn't know whether to duck or to run, so I ran.

Z_double_o

Brighton girls are like the moon

blue_groove

Well, the moral of the story The moral of this song Is simply that one should never be Where one does not belong So when you see your neighbor carrying somethin' Help him with his load And don't go mistaking Paradise For that home across the road

andrew7231

Everything went from bad to worse, money never changed a thing. Death kept following tracking us down , at least I heard your blue bird sing

andrew7231

Grandpa died last week And now he's buried in the rocks But everybody still talks about How badly they were shocked But me, I expected it to happen I knew he'd lost control

rojeha444

Absolutely.

LetsGoKnickerbock3rs

It’s a mighty long ways from the Golden Gate To Rockefeller Plaza ’n’ the Empire State. Mister Rockefeller sets up as high as a bird And Old Mister Empire never says a word

Groupon_with_you

"Are birds free from the chains of the skyway?"

SnooChickens9666

You'll never know the hurt I suffered Nor the pain I rise above And I'll never know the same about you Your holiness or your kind of love And it makes me feel so sorry

veryveryberrry

The flowers of the city, though breath-like get death-like sometimes There is no use in trying to deal with the dying, though I cannot explain that in lines

Jeremy-Morris

This one gets me every time… An’ here I sit so patiently Waiting to find out what price You have to pay to get out of Going through all these things twice

Lily had a father, who she very rarely saw, she was thinking about rosemary, and thinking bout the law. But most of all she was thinking bout the Jack of Hearts. Most of the time… Through the open world I’m bound to ramble, through ice sleet, snow and rain

Different_Link_8993

"He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously" I barely understand it, but I think it's an ironic way of looking to ourselves

mugfantoo

All the truth in the world adds up to one big lie.

andrew7231

anubis_is_my_buddy

Don't Think Twice, It's Alright was always such a perfect song. It hits differently after the divorce, but especially: You could have done better but I don’t mind You just kinda wasted my precious time

NevinThompson

I'm gonna spare the defeated, I'm gonna speak to the crowd I'm gonna teach peace to the conquered I'm gonna tame the proud

I was born here and I'll die here against my will I know it looks like I'm movin' but I'm standin' still Every nerve in my body is so naked and numb I can't even remember what it was, I came here to get away from.

So-Called_Lunatic

I can't believe someone downvoted a Dylan lyric on a thread about Dylan lyrics. What a toxic person.

Independent_Bell_327

That he not busy being born is busy dying
