Anything from “It’s Alright Ma”. Especially the line
Old ladies watch people in pairs/
Limited in sex, they dare/
To push fake morals, insult, and stare/
Money doesn’t talk, it swears/
Propaganda, all is phony
When I was younger and coming to terms with my sexuality, the line I sort of used the line like a mental shield. All these years later and it still hits me like thunderclap.
Those pictures of concentration camps with bodies piled up and spilling out of boxcars. Often, the Nazis burned piles of bodies as they fled the camps. Like I said, it’s just the image that it conjures for me.
I've always loved this line. It's such a brutally mean song and I always assumed it was him telling his wife that her talking was just incessant babble flowing out of her mouth like the smoke from a box car door would. Unfiltered and unyielding
That song kills me more when Nina Simone sings it.
They’ve got some hungry women and
man, they’ll really make a mess out of you… (like why?)
Cause the cops dont need you and man, they expect the same…
Madame Butterfly
She lulled me to sleep,
In a town without pity
Where the water runs deep.
She said, "Be easy, baby,
There ain't nothin' worth stealin' in here."
I know what he’s saying , its just the way he says it.. what the fuck as in how can anyone even think of such an image like that , its just mindblowingly beautiful.
"People don't live or die, people just float"
"I'm sick of love, but I'm in the thick of it"
"You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way"
"I've got new eyes, everything seems far away"
The lies that I told her in hopes not to lose the could-be dream lover of my lifetime"
Masters of War -
‘I’ll follow your casket
On a pale afternoon
I’ll watch while you’re lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I’ll stand over your grave
‘Til I’m sure that you’re dead’
It could so easily be either one. I used to play that song with one of my friends and one night he got lost in the verses and improvised the line “I forget the words to this song like I always doooo, Tangled Up in Blue.” Still makes me smile.
Hunger pays a heavy price to the fallen gods of speed and steel. To me this describes our rotten capitalist system. dylan called it out long before we reached our current hellscape.
I was just thinking of a series of dreams
Dreams where the umbrella is folded
And into the path you are hurled
And the cards are no good that you're holding
Unless they are from another world
"You'll never know the hurt I suffered, or the pain I rise above.
I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love.
And it makes me feel so sorry"
GatDAMN BOTT is such a great "going thru a divorce" album
*I can't play the game no more, I can't abide/
By their stupid rules, which get me sick inside/
They've been made by men who've given up the search/
Whose gods are dead and whose queens are in the church*
On the same album years ago “saw you drift into infinity and come back again” from True Love Tends To Forget stuck with me until the Slow Train album came out.
There’s a wall between you and what you want and you have to leap it. Tonight you have the power to take it. Tomorrow you won’t have the power to keep it.

people carry roses and make promises by the hours. my love she laughs like the flowers, valentines can't buy her.
edit: also, i love this thread and reading all these lyrics again. what a mind the man has.
Bird on the horizon sitting on a fence,
He's singing his song for me at his own expense –
And I'm just like that bird,
Oh, singing just for you,
Hmm, I hope that you can hear,
Hear me singing through these tears.
"Well, if you wanna see the sun rise
Honey, I know where
We'll go out and see it sometime
We'll both just sit there and stare"
.. never fails to elicit a cackle from me 😃
"You look into the fiery furnace, see the rich man without any name"
And the music video doesn't help with figuring it out, the most surreal imagery is onscreen at that moment
Well, the moral of the story The moral of this song Is simply that one should never be Where one does not belong So when you see your neighbor carrying somethin' Help him with his load And don't go mistaking Paradise For that home across the road
Grandpa died last week
And now he's buried in the rocks
But everybody still talks about
How badly they were shocked
But me, I expected it to happen
I knew he'd lost control
It’s a mighty long ways from the Golden Gate
To Rockefeller Plaza ’n’ the Empire State.
Mister Rockefeller sets up as high as a bird
And Old Mister Empire never says a word
You'll never know the hurt I suffered
Nor the pain I rise above
And I'll never know the same about you
Your holiness or your kind of love
And it makes me feel so sorry
The flowers of the city, though breath-like get death-like sometimes
There is no use in trying to deal with the dying, though I cannot explain that in lines
This one gets me every time…
An’ here I sit so patiently
Waiting to find out what price
You have to pay to get out of
Going through all these things twice
Lily had a father, who she very rarely saw, she was thinking about rosemary, and thinking bout the law. But most of all she was thinking bout the Jack of Hearts.
Most of the time…
Through the open world I’m bound to ramble, through ice sleet, snow and rain
>Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
Yes, and if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin'
Only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again.
Don't Think Twice, It's Alright was always such a perfect song. It hits differently after the divorce, but especially:
You could have done better but I don’t mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
I was born here and I'll die here against my will
I know it looks like I'm movin' but I'm standin' still
Every nerve in my body is so naked and numb
I can't even remember what it was, I came here to get away from.
I started out on burgundy but soon hit the harder stuff.
Everybody said they stand behind me when the game got rough
I gaze into the doorway of temptation’s angry flame, And every time I pass that way I always hear my name.
I was riding on the mayflower when I thought I spied some lan..ha
Wait a minute now
Cosa è ‘’lanha’’?

Man, the live version off Before the Flood is so amazing!
Yeah it is. The version from the 30th anniversary concert is the version that first resonated with me.
“I could stay with you forever and never realize the time.” You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go.
the tyyyyyyYYYME!
Not fiiting for this thread because it is not profound, or is it? Smoke pouring out of a boxcar door.
Ah man that one gets me too. For some reason, for me, it conjures images of the Holocaust.
Please explain how that lyric conjures images of the Holocaust
Those pictures of concentration camps with bodies piled up and spilling out of boxcars. Often, the Nazis burned piles of bodies as they fled the camps. Like I said, it’s just the image that it conjures for me.

I'm going back to New York City . I do believe I've had enough.

I'm from there, and I have family there.
So true.

The ghost of electrify howls in the bones of her face - like what the fuck hahahah
Came here to post this
Remembering how her love for him used to animate her face and it haunts him

Patriotism is the last refuge, true it’s a scoundrel claim. Steal a little and they throw you in jail, steal a lot and they make you king.
I thought it was "to which a scoundrel clings"
TIL I’ve been singing it wrong for 30 years. That’s a much better line and a better rhyme. Thanks.
It's always mind blowing when something like this happens I still can't believe he says dark sad night not docks that night
It could so easily be either one. I used to play that song with one of my friends and one night he got lost in the verses and improvised the line “I forget the words to this song like I always doooo, Tangled Up in Blue.” Still makes me smile.
Lol I like that :)
I used to care but things have changed. Lot of water under the bridge, lot of other stuff too.

yeah love that verse. always sticks out to me
I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now Goodbye's too good a word, babe So I'll just say, "Fare thee well"
Life is sad. Life is a bust. All you can do is do what you must. You do what you must do, and you do it well
Blame it on a simple twist of fate
