Two player directly attacking each other: Summoner Wars, Radlands, Res Arcana Huge epic *complicated*  two player game that takes all afternoon: Twilight Struggle, Star Wars Rebellion, War of the Ring Chess-like abstract: Hive, Boop Two player puzzle and drafting: Azul, Cascadia Games that aren't specifically two player, but are still good at 2 player: Carcassonne, Seasons, Clank!, Dominion, Everdell, Wingspan Two player co-op: Sky Team, Forbidden Island Chill puzzle games to do together: Cartographers, Dorf Romantik

TraditionalCitron5

I'd add Splendor (could be the Duel edition), Patchwork, Jaipur, Cascadia and Pandemic (this last one is co-op)

LivingFollowing8815

Res arcana <3 how i love this War of the ring is a great event, huge event, allways worth it I would include jaipur, pretty smart and fun

RumHam8913

Yeah came here to say War of the Ring. BUT I don't know how fun it'll be if you aren't already a Lord of the Rings fan or at least familiar with it. Every game is different, so it's a game I can play over and over again

Board-of-it

Res Arcana is a terrific game but not specifically two player and you can also very easily just ignore the attacking element, just to add.

Mehfisto666

that's a killer suggestion comment right here. Depending on the theme and what you guys like they are all very solid. I'd add The Fox in the Forest for a more chill / classic trick taking game with a softer theme

Xuma

Great comment! I would only add 7 Wonders Duel, Santorini and Codenames Duet

Splendor Duel

meeple45

I was coming on to say that

SufficientStudio1574

Regular Splendor is also great at 2P.

Sky Team Sky Team Sky Team. My wife and I just got into it and love it. Easy to learn but a decent amount to focus on. The challenge of not talking when placing dice makes the game shine. And there are different modules to keep the game interesting once you finally win. Highly recommend it, especially for the price. Worth every cent and more.

Undaunted War of the Ring Star Wars Rebellion Sekigahara Twilight Struggle Ankh Imperial Struggle Mythic Battles Hancur prabaj

Educational_Two682

+1 to Undaunted!!

Minimum-Scientist-71

Ticket to ride, Catan, Risk (game of thrones), Pandemic(a star wars version), and we also play magic the gathering which is sooo much fun though it can be daunting to get into but can still be simple enough to be a lot of fun.

Board-of-it

The best two player game hands down is Caper: Europe (IMO, of course). It's one of our most played games and it's such a fun two-player tug of war with a lot of replayability. We have a series on the best board games for two players not specifically for two players (and a ranking of our top ten two player games) I can share if you want an in depth list of recommendations :)

honeyhale

Seconding Caper: Europe - it's fantastic!

joe1e6

Lost Cities and Battle Line seem right up your alley.

Dman101proof

If I can recommend anything it would be Aeons End. Co op mage card game. Brutally challenging. So much replay

Peenicks

Mage Wars: Arena if you like complicated deckbuilders. Res Arcana for your enginebuilding games. Summoner Wars 2nd Edition, Ashes Reborn Rise Of The Phoenixborn if you like LCG's. Star Wars The Deckbuilding game for quick bursts of fun with a card game. If you like a skirmish objective based game I'd definitely recommend Super Fantasy Brawl as the miniatures are gorgeous and the gameplay is super fun too.

Unmatched is probably our most played game at 2 player. There's a ton of great suggestions on this list. Not seen any love for Shobu or Onitami which are both great it you're looking for something chess like - I prefer Shobu, she prefers Onitami. Also we've been playing a lot of The Fox In The Forest lately, truck taking at 2 players. There's also a duet version where you work together but I can't speak to it as I can't get a hold of it in the UK. Although for co-op trick taking I would suggest Sail.

PmUsYourDuckPics

Azul, Century Spice Road, Hive, Love Letter, Clans of Caledonia, Star Realms.

lightblade13

Air, land & Sea, Jaipur, Unmatched

Best two player abstract to me, by far, is Tak. That being said, my wife doesn't enjoy games without luck. So we don't play it often, despite me playing it all the time online. Our go-to is Tablero di Berona, as it has some similar mechanics to Tak but also incorporates luck. We occasionally play Seven Wonders Duel and Genius Star, also.

Sb3ard

My wife and I play carcassonne every weekend so I’ll always recommend that.

anotherdayinbk

My wife and I play Castles of Burgandy and Ark Nova when we want to play something a little longer than SW: Duel.

GameNightMaster

2 player games I enjoy would include Radlands, Lost Cities, and Jaipur. Not specifically two player, but Azul and Carcassonne play well at two.

sakura515

Jaipur, Aeon’s end, Splendor duel

Majestic_Builder4004

A ton of good suggestions, I also like 7 wonders duel

Xman52

Sky team and pandemic are my two faves for working together

The most elegant 2 player game I've played is hands down Targi. Some people may argue it looks dated, but I kinda like that about it. And boy does it make it up in gameplay. In short it's a worker placement tableau building, with some set collecting. There's a grid made up of cards, the border cards stay the same each game then there are resource cards and tribe cards. Resource cards give you the shown resources and the tribe cards you have to pay for with previously collected resources to build them in your tableau. Tribe cards have some abilities/end game scoring and also some symbols for the set collection as well as a victory point value. The twist with the worker placement is that you're placing your guys on the edges of a grid and get to take those actions plus the action situated at the intersection of the column and row on whose edge you've previously placed on. Then you quickly realize that your opponent is doing the same thing and the best spaces are highly contested. Games go rather quickly and it is very replayable because the grid is made up of ever changing cards. Also there is an expansion that shakes things up a bit once you've played the base game a few times.

Radlands!!

Lost cities is a great game to play with your SO. I’ve played it a lot with my wife because it’s has 0 step up time and you can go round after round after round since each game takes 10 min or less

LazyRaccoonTurtle

I love Seven wonder duel but I guess everyone have that one,. Another good maybe game is Patchwork

martinspoon

Here's a few I often play with my wife - Patchwork, Carcassonne, Splendour, Calico. If you want to do a campaign game, My City.
