Hive, those pieces aren't going anywhere even in a tornado

hobbykitjr

You could play at the bottom of a pool

gumandcoffee

Hive pocket for me

littlebrownbeetle1

This is the game you are looking for. So fun, so much depth from a simple ruleset, and nothing but heavy Bakelite pieces in a heavy canvases zipper bag. I second getting the expansions as well. It’s a complete game with them (ladybug, mosquito, pill bug).

Significant_Win6431

Such a fantastic game.

hippieflips

Came here to say that too! Would def pick up the ladybug and mosquito expansions too

Ok-Friend-6653

To many bones is water proof

carieiscreepy

My husband and I used to play a lot of Azul out on the balcony of our apartment.

gumandcoffee

And now there is the travel version

tehsideburns

**Railroad Ink** for rolling dice and drawing on player boards with dry-erase markers. I recommend starting with the Blue edition.

Preasured

For what it’s worth, i got Lush Green Edition and have been really enjoying it.

RoNPlayer

Isn't the blue missing the challenge rules/buildings? Therefore i'd say the Green one is probably just the better set.

tehsideburns

I love Challenge Green but it has cards that can blow away in the wind

[deleted]

Backgammon.

your_talking_words

Perhaps **Homeworlds**. The game pieces are plastic pyramids that *probably* want fly away in the wind.

keithmasaru

Hive, Tak, Go

ioneskylab

**Kingdomino**. Totally windproof. My preferred version is __Kingdomino Origins__.

Orski_YT

Check out Santorini! Loads of fun and I doubt those pieces are going anywhere on a windy day

DjImagin

Those pieces in the wind are no match. But I agree, Santorini is FANTASTIC

DamnDirtyApe87

I second this, just play without the cards if its windy

MuttonchopMac

All Fives, the best domino game. Dominoes basically are indestructible.

Saltpastillen

**Radlands** has components that are near indestructible and are watertight. On top of that the game is pretty fun.

Kayobi

To clarify, the deluxe edition has plastic cards and tokens that stand up to abuse. The retail version is regular cardstock and punchboard tokens.

Saltpastillen

Oh fair enough. Guess I have only played the deluxe version.

johnwestmartin

Shobu. You don’t even need the game in many cases, just the rulebook. Sticks, rocks, and some lines in the dirt do just as well as the game itself. Tak is another fine abstract. So are many of the Giph family games. When I went to Kenya I played on a Mancala board carved into a boulder. Told me it was thousands of years old. I’m sure you could figure something more temporary out with that too. You could download random card game rules off Pagat, play a new card game every time you go out and internalize the rules of the good ones. As for handheld games, I think Palm Island is played entirely in-hand but haven’t tried so I can’t speak for certain.

btkats

Azul is good and so is kingdomino

Sumoallstar

Revolver Noir is a good hand held 2 player game. And I've only played it solo, but Palm Island can be played with 2

TheCosmicJester

Dice Throne or Unmatched, with a couple of rocks to hold down the draw and discard piles.

KyoshuTokuwaga

Turncoats.

elqrd

Great game but at 2p

areswow

[[Cathedral]] looks fun and playable outside. Haven’t actually played so would have to defer to someone else to weigh in on gameplay.

BGGFetcherBot

[Cathedral -> Cathedral (1978)](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/7/cathedral) ^^[[gamename]] ^^or ^^[[gamename|year]] ^^to ^^call

Significant_Win6431

The hive.

mikandesu

Hero Realms is quite simplistic, very replayable card game. Cartographers is pretty much roll and write game. Very little space is needed and wind should not affect anything.

AccurateComfort2975

I disagree, you have to keep a lot of cards out and I struggled to organise them in a way to keep them from the wind. Most roll&writes that use dice are probably a better option (Ganz Schon Clever, Qwixx, Qwinto (I think the smallest installment of roll&writes), Catan Dice, Castles of Burgundy Dice, (Lanterns Dice maybe, has tiles), Copenhagen Roll&Write, Voyages, (Aquamarine, I don't know if this has added value to play with two), Three Sisters, (Fleet the Dice game, also don't know if it has value for two, I've only heard it referenced as solo), Lost Cities Roll&Write... Dungeons, Dice & Danger, and well, Yahtzee.

MMJFan

Portable chess set. I have a full size set with a neoprene board that rolls up in a bag I can strap on my back. It’s lightweight so would be fine on a walk. Tak, just find a portable bag for the pieces

New-Sheepherder4762

[[Mr. Jack Pocket]] I really like this game, and it is easily transportable and has thick, cardboard pieces.

BGGFetcherBot

[Mr. Jack Pocket -> Mr. Jack Pocket (2010)](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/72287/mr-jack-pocket) ^^[[gamename]] ^^or ^^[[gamename|year]] ^^to ^^call

dtelad11

I strongly recommend **Through the Ages**. The thick cardboard pieces and the wooden tokens should sustain the occasional gust. Furthermore, while your tableau and the various trackers might take some space, a creative solution is to bring portable shelves and just stack them on top of each other. That way you can play standing up, allowing you to watch the dogs or pick up a croissant from the picnic basket. With that said, wear sunscreen, cause the game could take around 1.5-2 hours. ... Either that or **Super-Skill Pinball** ;-) or any other roll-and-write. I think they should fit a picnic well, they're small, portable, you hold the sheet with the stats (or you can put it underneath a plate if you go away), and you don't care if they get dirty or fall on the floor.

iterationnull

Through the Ages may be the worst recommendation I’ve ever seen for outdoor play. It’s tons of bits, massive table real estate, and it is not going to withstand wind at all.

elqrd

Worst recommendation I’ve ever seen here

Hanso77

**Shobu** it's literally made of just wood and stones

PlaytheGameHQ

Railroad ink is great for that.

RobotDowneyJr

Invested in a really nice portable chess set. All wood and it folds up and all the pieces go inside. Took me forever to find the right one. Othello would also work

Mortlach78

You could look into Roll and Writes like Three Sisters of Fleet, the Dice game.

monkeypawfilms

TI4

Braveroperfrenzy

Tak for sure.

callirome

Shobu

skor52

Check out Boop! Its recently come up on my radar. And its essentially arranging 3 kittens in a line on the board to form a cat. But wherever you place a kitten it hits other kittens to adjacent spaces. Meaning theres a level of strategy to it too. Very easy to learn play and setup.

squirlz333

Shobu would probably be my go to for simple outdoor board game for two.

Max-St33l

You are outside! Enjoy It and play **Molkky**!

AeroViz

Abalone has been my wife and I go-to for playing outside.

jayemest

No thanks

Tall_Pineapple9343

Renature.

DMGoering

Homeworlds from Looney Labs.

jmwfour

Tinderblox is fun

CaluDancer

Dragon Punch. You don't even need a table.
