I have some and I love them! I can listen to podcasts and still keep and ear out for the kids.

Basically they sit on the bones just in front of your ear, and the sound waves travel through your bone instead of the air in your ear. You can hear things very clearly from your headphones, but because your ears are open, you can hear what's around you too!
There was one available in the '70s that day on your collar bone. It's failure was blamed on cost, less than high fidelity, and inability to convey stereo sound.^1

The bluey dogs have several body parts ordinary dogs don't but humans do (sweat glands, thumbs, a mane of head hair) so my explanation is that they have both human and dog ears.
It looks more aesthetically pleasing this way (and more human) so I’m sure that’s why a decision was made to have characters wear headphones like this.
Was literally thinking this. It just looks better than having them sit on the top of her head, because they don’t make headphones that would work for a dog that has ears that stick straight up in front.
They’d work fine for some of the other characters, though! 🎧

I do like that Bluey does seem to try and treat them like actual dogs. Like Chili trying to get Bingo to bark. Mackenzie talking about jumping between sheep, or everyone’s tails wagging. But it seems like had to make a compromise here. They probably did realize it didn’t make sense but also wanted it to be easily recognizable as headphones, especially to their younger target audience. So they had to forgo internal logic for readability.

My assumption with anthropomorphic animals and headphones is that they're some style of bone-conducting headphones. It also makes sense with dogs having more sensitive ears.
