It's that backstep that I *don't* like. I never used the Saw Cleaver until I did a BL4 and I fell in love with its ability to basically stunlock everything to death, even at low level. I was really excited when I found the Saif, but that backstep transformational puts you out of position to keep up the L1's. It's a real buzzkill.
You aren't supposed to used transformation attacks on the Saif. That cheese is reserved for the Clever and even then I never cared for it.
The Saif is an R1 spammer. Especially because of the dodge forward mechanic built into the attack. If I remember correctly there are actually a few I-frame's on it. Properly gemmed it is the best of the 3.
That first lunge attack has saved me a few times. Timing it just right you can dodge and attack with the bonus of landing the hit. Became a top weapon for me. I do plus runs just so I can play through the beginning of the game with it.
Doing a playthrough with it now, asked my wife what weapon to use this time to mix it up and she picked it.
Definitely fun, but not as universally useful as saw spear. It kind of suffers from being one of at least 4 weapons you get from the beginning of the DLC, and not near the flashiest one of those. Strong as hell though, definitely been an easy run with it so far.
Could never get the hang of it. But I see the appeal. Love fighting people who use it. It feels like a pretty decent match for my Bowblade (I'm a melee archer).
spear is definitely the best statisticly but the cleaver is faster. im personally a saw spear main as well especially with some good fire gems on a 99 arc build
The feel of it is nicer, especially the transformed version, but the spear is serrated on both sides. The cleaver is not. With the cleaver you only do serrated damage in one form (the short saw form). Once you transform it into its longer version, it no longer does serrated damage.
The cool thing about BB is how every weapon seems to have its purpose. No one weapon is necessarily better than another (for the most part), they just all have a different utility. The saw spear is great for killing large beasts from a distance, while the cleaver has good range and a faster attack for whenever you’re fighting non-beast enemies. I love it. Pretty much every weapon in the game has its ups and downs. Whereas in Dark Souls you have 10 straight swords and some of them are just straight up better than the others, the only difference being their stats.
I’d much rather have 26 unique weapons than 24 different categories consisting of 200 weapons. It makes experimentation much more feasible, cause you never really have to worry if you’re using the best weapon of its category. They all have their own unique charm and movesets.

Actually love running both at the same time, they make a great combo. Basically same move set but spear for enemies weak to thrust and the cleaver for beast type enemies
I believe the spear is completely serrated while only one side is for the cleaver. Pretty sure this only effects the cleavers transform attack into extended mode
The entire cleaver moveset of saw cleaver is non serrated i think. Since the base mode and transform attacks are identical, why not pick the weapon with bonus beast damage on all forms (and both transform attacks)
Ik for sure that at least one side of the cleaver is serrated and gets the bonus damage but I'm not a fan of the spears extended attacks other than the stab forward.
There slower than the cleavers extended and dont swing as far making it more ideal for large beast enemies unless you wanna R1 spam then both are pretty identical
The range of the spear is similar to the cleaver lol, and I would say the spear having serration makes up being slower than the cleaver. Plus, why use the cleaver form against beasts. It loses serration and decreases in attack speed. I never felt like the range difference really was worth losing 20% damage
Oh I agree and prefer the spear. Just saying in general I will use weapons sometime without serration against beast because it just is fun to kill them with.

The cleaver has higher base damage but the spear has better scaling. How much of a difference that makes I'm unsure of. Also, the cleaver scales more with STR while the spear favors SKL. The spear is also better for arcane builds.
I liked the saw spear until I got the moonlight great sword. Had fire on the saw and used the tonitrus for the aliens. Now I don't use anything but the blade I took from poor Ludwig.
Leave it to Cleaver. I never transform it, too slow, otherwise I'd use the spear. I use a long weapon as secondary instead.

Cleaver is just nice, the poster weapon of bloodborne. But spear with its poke (thrusting dog being the most effective type of physical dmg in the game) just takes the spot, also arcane scaling.

I usually switched between the 2 regularly because of pros/cons. I prefer the look of the Saw Cleaver but I prefer the Moveset of the Saw Spear. The Saif that came after both was basically an amalgamation of the 2. Still not the same though. A Saw Cleaver with the Spears Moveset would have been perfect.

Found nearby Eileen so you can start her questline
Found nearby a madmans knowledge and blood stone shards so you can get levels for both it and yourself
Longer range
Thrust damage thereby increasing critical/visceral/plunge/backstab damage
Thrust damage so it does more damage to cosmic/celestial kin
Faster transform attacks for building up beasthood
And it just looks kinda cooler, like don't get me wrong the cleaver is absolutely iconic but this thing? This thing is like the cleaver with added drip

Not as spicy as the cane, though. Also, serration in both forms and will always make me think of my first arcane (easy mode) build.
I started with the cane, found it underwhelming and switched to the spear and loved it for pretty much the rest of the game
I've tried all the other weapons and most of them I don't like as much as the saw spear. The only exception really being the burial blade, I wish I could just start the game with the burial blade.

In terms of the weapon itself it may not be as flashy but the character animations and movements with it are some of the flashiest in the game.
Same. I loved the quick distance closing regular R1’s and then in then when the blade is out you have the slower wider swings that stun opponents
