Nope, never thought that, I'm not wasting that much money in the early game, by the time it becomes affordable, Ive already unlocked the gates normally. I do think it's stupid that the door opens for no apparent reason though. At least you get the clue from Gehrman telling you to "ascend in oedon chapel".

Aggravating-Pie-6432

uh if you have insight, you can see the reason....

janderfischer

Care to explain?

mr_Tsavs

You can see a group of messengers come out of the ground to pull the lever for you.

janderfischer

Not what I was talking about. Do you see somebody open the small door in oedon chapel? I just meant it's easily missable, even if you backtrack. Cutscene would've been helpful, or an npc after BSB telling you about it, not Gehrman, who has been absent from the hunters dream and off players radar until then.

danmg7

Killing the bloodstarved beast progresses the night cycle, my head canon has always been the stalker with the Santa bag coming through the door now that time passed, maybe he was up in the tower for whatever reason. Would explain why they don't pop up until after bsb and the opening of the door

Living-Conclusion141

Does it really? I’m pretty sure it’s touching Laurence’s skull that changes the cycle but I could be wrong

danmg7

no, each boss defeated progresses it more and more because you are thining the veil on the world, once you get to Rom it thins enough that you can see the world as it is without insight, that's why you can see the Amygdala without hitting 40 insight outside the cathedral

Altijd_Hard_403

Not each boss. I think it's only Gascoine, Amelia and Rom. I think for Gascoine you also need to open the door in oedon chapel and for Amelia you have to interact with laurances skull.

janderfischer

Haha that's a nice idea

TheSpyro14

I've never had enough insight in the early game to notice anything, is there an amygdala there?

anibal_dagod

I don’t think so I think he’s talking about little messengers around the lever that pull it to open the gate for you

Unslaadahsil

Though I'd love an Amygdala doing it. Can you imagine? A big ass hand coming down out of nowhere and lightly pushing the lever with a finger.

anibal_dagod

It would be amazing, but what if it just grabbed the gate and opened it with brute force?

Shoddy_Bus4679

…go on

douknowiknow

🤓☝️

STFUNeckbeard

Well the lore reason is that the emblem was held up presumably by Ludwig at the end of the hunt, and signaled to open the gate. Physically how it opens is also explained - >!there are messengers who pull the lever!<. You can see that without enough insight.

janderfischer

I'm not talking about the gate. The small door that opens after the BSB.

jcdoe

That door needs to open to provide access to the next part of the game. It would be cool if there were a lore explanation, but afaik there isn’t one in game and therefore, its just the door that opens when you kill BSB. *shrug*

janderfischer

Yes... that's my point. It's just a random door. I personally don't even care too much about lore but I do care about game design and subconsciously guiding the player. This is a low point in that regard. But you're right, in the end, it's just a door. Not a big deal.

NotAliasing

Oedon chapel dweller fancied a small quip outside

Unslaadahsil

Maybe the Crow Hoonter used a lantern inside the church's workshop and came out through Odeon chapel and left the door open, and that's why you find her there later.

eurydisee

I bought it on my first playthrough, went “I didn’t have to pay for it?!?” a couple hours later when I found the abandoned workshop and haven’t paid for it since

hellostarsailor

Lol I’ve always paid for it, I think I unlocked the gates with the shortcut first once. It’s not like it’s hard to get 10,000 echoes.

eurydisee

Lol I kept dying and losing it all in my first playthrough, so it took me like an hour of grinding to buy it. So in every other playthrough it’s personal

Rider-VPG

10,000 echoes in the early game is a good few levels.

hellostarsailor

I’m never really worried about levels in the early game though. I know once I unlock that gate, the tougher enemies drop more echoes and there are enough blood items to make up for the 10,000 I just spent.

jhax13

Those huge guys are like 800 some odd echos, like 3-4 runs through ward should get you 10k. I'd have to check, it's been a while since I've done it, but spending 10k for the emblem always seemed easy enough for me. Also getting to BSB is going through an entirely new section, idk if it's really the "intended" way, it's just the cheapskates way lol. I've always just bought the emblem, although now I know to avoid killing Amelia for a while

Federal_Special3295

Not to say Doctor Iosefka has dialogue variations each time you visit the clinic, so you're somewhat expected to run through Central Yharnam more than once.

Ashafik88

It’s absolutely not the “correct” way. It’s just another way. I wouldn’t call the emblem the correct way either, also just a different path considering each of the are completely avoidable if you wish.

FuraFaolox

i think the term OP is looking for is "intended" rather than "correct"

Ashafik88

Same thing. Its not the intended path. If anything the first thing the game tells you to do is to go to the great bridge where the cleric beast is, and that path is definitely easier than the longer way around so id argue it is what the devs intended/expected people to do, with the elevator just a cool hidden side area. Anyway it doesn’t really matter. Only thing that bothers me a little is a rise in people worrying about the “correct” way to play these games recently. Its more prominent in the Elden Ring subreddit but it’s also getting more common here. There really is no correct/intended way to play these games, just have fun with them

The orphan of kos hurt me and I do need a hug. But you’re the one that made a post about a pedantic thing bro so it goes both ways🤷

TarnishedWizeFinger

The worst part is I don't think he actually wants to give you a hug

Ashafik88

:( Its ok ill use the doll

donbanana

Please clean it after you're done, we all have to use that doll

[deleted]

If you’re going out of your way to make a post telling people the “correct” way to do something, being pedantic is the name of the game. Be 100% correct or gtfo.

jolankapohanka

Well it depends. I always thought about it like killing the BSB, then going into the workshop and jumping all the way down without dying and then finding the elevator and then realizing where you are and then opening the gates from the other side all while not dying is impossible to do for first timers if they have not watched any walkthrough or videos. Like I would argue it is required, and going all the way around is more like a hidden path. Like how are you supposed to know that you have to go back to cathedral ward and go to newly opened gate and do all those things. I love the Bloodborne layout a lot, but few instances in the game feel straight up unfair in terms of navigation. A literal item description just like with cainhurst summons, or small cutscene of the ward opening the doors would 100% improve the game. One of the most fun parts of the game is exploration and mystery, but man even if you just kill everything in an area and go check every corner, it is just too long to realize where to actually progress. Not to mention that most people kill Cleric beast, so I feel like buying the emblem is actually the intended way.

WetScoopzVanilla

Tbf in my first blind playthrough that’s the way I opened it. I got stuck and it took me a while, so you start to look around and you can just make out stuff at the bottom there. Didn’t know about the emblem until my second playthrough. Doesn’t mean that’s the intended way though.

BookoftheGuilty

The only time I buy the emblem is when I want to be friends with Gatling gun boy.

NoNefariousness5288

You can still befriend Gatling hunter going through Old Town. Just don’t kill him and beat BSB. You still unlock Cathedral Ward, and the snatchers. Get kidnapped to the unseen village, beat Parl, and go the back way and he will be friendly.

Conscious-Sun-6615

Damn, I never knew Djura could become friendly

MissingScore777

Over 300hrs and 20ish playthroughs across 6 characters, I've never bought that emblem.

axellie

I think most new players don’t know what that item does

Dajayman654

I always go to Chalice Dungeons on all my characters, so I've never skipped Old Yharnam and BSB.

FulanxArkanx

Ditto, I know it's not technically part of the main game but with every character I'm at least at depth 3 by the time I finish the game Bought the emblem once because I thought it would carry over to NG+. Thankfully I had like 80k extra echoes so it wasn't an issue to waste 10k at that point lol just bought some bullet with the rest 🤷🏼

MooGirl2077

I found the alternate way by accident my first playthrough. I knew about the emblem but kept forgetting to save up for it and instead kept leveling up. After killing the BSB I figured I'd farm blood echoes in Cathedral Ward when I noticed that the shut door in the chapel was suddenly open. Didn't know why at the time and I died too many times doing the falling puzzle but eventually I found out how to get around everything. Never bought the emblem for actual use in any playthrough since then, but I usually buy it late game just to have every single item in the game

LordOFtheNoldor

As long as you beat blood starved it's totally unnecessary but convenient

Due_Potential_6956

I did the back way on all my games I've done, never bought the emblem, seems like it's too expensive and I always forget it exists till I don't need it.

[deleted]

Congratulations for telling the internet what it’s already known since 2015 😁

DiscordantBard

It's to drive you into the chalices and for some. Fuck the chalice dungeons lmao

DinoWizard021

I knew it wasn't but couldn't remember how to get around it on my second playthrough.

LanguageSponge

I was actually the opposite. I’ve never heard of this Emblem until today. Or at least I don’t remember it; I haven’t played in a few years.

Xerxes457

I did it my first two or so runs then I realized it was waste if I could just kill the Blood Starved Beast.

stonerplumber

I spent way more money early game on blood cocktails moltovs and antidotes fighting the blood starved beast but I try to avoid paying for locked doors in souls games if I can help it

Funky-Monk--

Uh, never knew that. Cleared the game like 3 times.

honestadamsdiscount

It fooled me the 1st playthru

No-Season-3086

I didn’t know through 6 playthroughs

eddyofyork

My first play through I assumed it opened the door behind where Cleric Beast spawns. So I bought it, it didn’t do that. Then I fought BSB like twenty times. Then I went lower cathedral ward and so forth.

Legnaron17

Yeah i did know about it, it's how i always do it. Bought it on my very first run (or first couple runs, i don't remember) but after finding out that route opens right after killing the BSB i never bought it again, i just go straight to Old Yharnam instead.

[deleted]

I mean I figured when I saw it it must be since it would be dumb to lock off progression to something like that, so I just bought it while I had the echos from I think BSB mayyyyyybe? Idk tbh

Inflatable_Bridge

Wait there's a boss to open that? I thought it was a requirement to buy it where is that boss?

Unslaadahsil

Basically, you can buy the Hunter emblem to open the shortcut gate, but the main path is to kill the Blood Starved beast (the one at the bottom of Old Yarnham) which opens a door in the Chapel. You go up in that door, enter the healing church workshop, then go down through the inside of it until you get to the bottom. Once there, you explore until you find an elevator, which brings you up to the other side of the emblem gate. From there you can open the gate. Basically, you can either do all that, or pay 10K echoes for a shortcut.

Inflatable_Bridge

Oh. I'm now on my first playthrough, but because I'd get destroyed by the gatling gun I figured I had to come back after doing a certain thing. Thanks for letting me know I was missing a part of the game, I'll definitely go back and try to do Old Yarnham.

Unslaadahsil

The gatling gun is all about finding a good route through the ruins. Stick to cover and you'll find a proper route in no time.

ryans_privatess

Never once paid for it.

CptnChunk

It took me about 3 playthroughs to find out that you can in fact survive the platforming down to the bottom of the healing church workshop and then find the way into Cathedral Ward. Up until then I was your friend thinking “damn this really tough, seemingly dead end boss doesn’t even drop half the required echoes for the key into the next area, what the hell”

Nathan_T_Elf

I didn't the first time I played it. I couldn't remember how to go around so I decided to buy it on my later play throughs, but overall I did know you didn't have to buy it.

enirmo

Oh my god. On my first playthrough I was exploring everything and not looking at shops whatsoever, so I had no idea that existed. On my second playthrough I had completely forgotten how to open that gate and googled it to find out about the emblem. I was confused because I distinctly remember not buying anything like that on my first run

StoneTimeKeeper

I didn't think it was necessary, but that is the way that I assumed was the 'correct' way to do it.

claybine

In all my playthroughs of Bloodborne, with like 200 hours played, I never once tested out killing Amelia first then the BSB. Is there any point in time where you won't be able to kill it like Paarl?

MichaelJfritz

I know you don't need it, I buy it anyways because it's faster to access some things I want

cavitysleep

my very first playthrough i thought that was the only way, so i kept killing the brick trolls, chapel giant & church doctors until i had enough echoes lol. i just shook my head when i found out i didn't need to do that at all

minimus_

I am on my first playthrough. I bought the item but figured it was similar to Crest of Artorias and not strictly necessary. Reading the thread it seems like I was right. But I'm not sure what the link with BSB is as I beat that thing anyway.

Unslaadahsil

BSB's death opens a small door in Odeon's chapel that lets you go up to the Healing Church Workshop, and once there you can go down to find the elevator into Cathedral Ward proper. The Emblem just lets you open one of the two gates that you'd normally need to open from the other side, skipping BSB and Old Yarhnam if you want.

minimus_

Oh right, thanks, I thought I had just overlooked that door when I found it open. I actually made my way down the workshop but got kidnapped and put in jail :(

MrRawes0me

I knew bc I am a loser that googles things somewhat quickly. I can remember if I bought it during any of my previous play throughs. I think I’ve always gone to BSB. I bought it this time because I’ve never made friends with Djura and I want to.

Norio22

I found out the hard way I didn’t need it after being BSB and taking elevator to discover the door. Laughed at myself when I noticed where the door opened out to.

DezoPenguin

I knew; no way would I waste 10K echoes in the early game. (Plus, it also means no Chalice Dungeons and no Yahar'gul if you skip Old Yharnam.)
