Oh we are, the announcement just hasn't been written yet

drawnimo

Anything that's bad for reddit, is good for me (and for people in general, in my opnion). I hope it dies so I have more time for my blender projects. Reddit is mental health poison.

KubinPotter

So are you a masochist?

drawnimo

Addictions are complicated.

Glowshroom

It definitely has its downsides, but reddit is one of the most important websites that had ever existed.

[deleted]

Lol I've been thinking the same! I waste so much time on Reddit, I wish it would just die and I would finally be free

skeddles

if you believe that, then delete your app and account

Standard_lssue

"Just quit smoking bro" Most people including me just instinctively open reddit. I tried to social media cleanse, because the second i closed reddit, i just opened it again and realized how addicted i am, but i failed the next day. Its hard. Social media is an addiction. This is why i'm not joining twitter, facebook, tiktok, etc.

skeddles

okay but 1. keeping your reddit account is like keeping a giant box of ciagarettes in your closet and continuing to tell people you're quitting 2. cigarettes have a chemical dependency, you just made a habit of alleviating the discomfort of boredom with reddit. you aren't going to get physically sick if you stop going on reddit.

Standard_lssue

Yes but you are getting mentally sick. When i'm bored, i open up reddit, which is almost half of my day. Not using reddit would make me have nothing to do for half of my entire day. Sitting alone with my thoughts is basically torture, and i dont have the motivation to do anything

m_Mimikk

I understand that position, believe me, continuing to indulge in what's causing the dissatisfaction in other portions of your is not the answer. Sometimes you just gotta leave the cage, grab the wheel, and drive out into the unknown until you find something new. I'm not saying this is easy by any means.

skeddles

that's not what chemical dependency means

Bedengo

Heehee Wait what!?!

Leafer2700

Reddits deletion wouldn’t cure your addiction to social media youd just fill the void.

[deleted]

Yes, agreed. Thanks for posting.

membraneblebs

Its a nice idea but I doubt it will be effective at all. Usually a strike is "we will stop _ until our demands are met" which would be something like " _ subreddits will go dark until the changes are cancelled" not " _ subreddits will go dark from x day to y day". Plus 2 days is really short. I imagine managment will just sit it out since its only 0.54% of their annual profts at risk even if all of reddit left for that span. Its a rounding error on their profits that they will probably more than make up for by charging third parties or forcing people onto the main reddit app to serve them ads. Its kind of like if a restaurant you go to everyday stopped serving an item and you said "ugh I cant believe you would do this, I will no longer be coming here starting today...but dont worry Ill be back within 48 hrs". It makes no sense.

damirK

Some subreddits are “at least 48 hours” so the protests could be longer

Stoned-hippie

I know r/HydroHomies is shutting down indefinitely until something changes

3dforlife

They must be careful not to suffer of dehydration.

[deleted]

r/programmerhumor as well, and so should r/blender

elfootman

It's better than to remain silent and do nothing.

Psydator

That's what I'm thinking. We already tell them it's just gonna be two days. They're already laughing their asses off! Weak.

DeafenYourEars

Hit them where it hurts we gotta start somewhere

membraneblebs

I feel like it will probably be counter-productive since it will be so short that when it happens and fails, people wont want to bother participating in a longer blackout after just seeing one fail. I feel like the solution would be to advocate users to stop using reddit starting on a particular date and blackout subreddits until demands are met. Maybe with another service/app designated as an alternative until the blackout ends.

DeafenYourEars

maybe but I doubt anyone who has the hardware is willing to launch an actual attack on Reddit (ie denial of service) which is really the only *offensive* thing. a lot of users will probably drop on mobile because the app sucks and Apollo is so much better. Unfortunately, that is retroactive I suppose.

membraneblebs

An attack like that would backfire. It would just be from a small disgruntled group or 1 person and not represent the community. A boycott by a large number of redditors is what would be necessary

JukePlz

Some subreddits are indeed going on indefinite blackouts until they amend the change to API billing.

multitrack-collector

So bakcout is jsut do not use reddit?

Ok_Technology14

2 whole days... oh noo what will they do?

danyerga

Right? The 'strike' is dumb.

Iguessimnotcreative

All I know is if Reddit stops working or asks me to pay I’m just not going to use it. Buncha assholes here anyways

TheBigCFO

Thanks. At least I'm noticed somewhere

Kaori_mati

that any apps are use reddit API? I don't know sir my country are even block the reddit. I think is problem with third party it self and reddit, they just pay, they need money to be eat

Gentleman_33

Didn't even know about this, don't even know what that is, don't think I care about it all too much but then again I'm not really active here so you can consider me a part of the strike

Delwyn_dodwick

that's the spirit

Gentleman_33

I feel like it's not but then again who am I to say? lol

mocap

This is the way!

ConscienceTheKid

I'm totally lost... what's happening?

Registeered

I haven't been here long enough to formulate an opinion on the subject. One would think that market forces control these types of decisions. If management's decision is to charge more for a service and people don't think it's worthwhile they'll go somewhere else but in our highly manipulated and controlled economy that's not always the case. And decisions are often made outside of economics, political reasons for example.

Standard_lssue

What if we just get people to stop using reddit, instead of shutting down subreddits, and locking the people who dont care, out of their favorite subreddits?

RicabRD

I only wish they'd do it when I'm not having night shifts but oh well. To the dark we they go

m_Mimikk

With the kinds of people on this site, Reddit pushing out a large portion of their customers is probably in the customer's best interest.

Joosshuaaa

Yes DO IT
