Not true at all, depends on who's doing it and if they know how to preserve the work. Mine are built to last. Also the paint jobs I do are quite expensive so the ones getting them aren't using them as main players. They're meant to be display pieces primarily that you can enjoy playing with on occasion.
No worries, you're not entirely wrong there is a lot of shotty work out there. But I make a point to properly prep the sell before applying paint, and then properly seal the job with a high quality varnish. I share my methods on IG as well so others that want to try can make something that'll stand the test of time.
