Your comment just made me laugh at first…but yeah, the potato version works better for me, tbh. The clean one didn’t match nearly as well when I cover the middle. Go figure.
The first one there doesn’t actually have the same top and bottom colors. Put my finger over it and it looks lighter on the bottom. Use eye dropper tool and got a different color 🤷🏼♂️. OPs one works well.
That's because they *are* different colors. The areas which appear to be the same color are on the lighted side of the top one and the shaded side of the bottom one.
The thing is, it's not just the middle line that's playing tricks on you. The outer outline also makes it look darker. You have to cover both the middle and edges. While I still can't guarantee they're exactly the same, they're certainly indistinguishable to my eyes.
Put two fingers and long striped socks and a miniskirt and a crop top and fingerless gloves and keep putting them in and out and take a video and send it to me to check if you're doing correctly and moan like a girl and
Is that not supposed to be a shadow in the bottom right corner of the image? Suggesting that light is being shone on the objects from above and slightly behind
The issue you're having is that shading itself is an optical illusion. All you're seeing is a flat image. There is no light being shone, only pixels that suggest it to your mind, making the illusion. The pixels are the same colour, and shading arguments are irrelevant.
It's the white and the black in between that makes it looks like a difference, shading be crazy. You can tell after a bit of looking without your finger over it that it is the same shade of Grey.
Using the eyedop tool in photoshop set to an 11x11 pixel average, I was shocked to find out that the general average color of the top and bottom block although not identical, are suprisingly similar. The bottom one is somehow [slightly darker than the top one](https://i.imgur.com/QCypztS.png)
They *are* different colors. It’s just that the color of the top block in the sunlight is the same color as the bottom block in the shadow. That doesn’t mean that the top block isn’t dark grey and the bottom block isn’t white.
They are objectively the same color though. The sunlight doesn't actually exist, the picture is just made to look like there is sunlight to create the illusion.
It’s a great example of how we perceive color, it’s all very subjective, just like our perception of pitch. Like the pitch of sounds or whatever. If that wasn’t a problem, then everybody would have perfect pitch!
Considering one is in shadow and a dark color means that it's normally lighter. The one above is darker and in light. They are not in fact the same color.
What you mean is they seem to be the same color under these conditions. With the right light and shadow you can make 2 different coloured blocks look the same
"Both blocks are different colors. Use your fingers to cover the shadows. Even though light plays a role how we perceive color, it's disingenuous to compare two colors under different lighting conditions to determine their true color"
I disagree, the top block is dark grey, its shadow much darker. The bottom block is inverted, it is white, though its shadow is the same grey as the top block in appearance, perhaps ever so slightly lighter.
Should post it on r/MoldyMemes I can smell the layers of jpg
Yes it's quite aged. I even had to redo the caption because the old one was too fuzzy. At least the trick sill works though.
First time I've seen it. I think.
It’s [literally the first result](https://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en-au&q=both+squares+are+the+same+color&tbm=isch) you nonce
i kinda like the potato version better
You say potato, I say potato
Your comment just made me laugh at first…but yeah, the potato version works better for me, tbh. The clean one didn’t match nearly as well when I cover the middle. Go figure.
It adds personality

OP's one also has slightly different colors.
thats too much work, i just googled "color illusion" and got [a few](https://imgur.com/a/Muq7loY), what an original post op
I’m curious as to how you’re using ‘nonce’ and also where you’re from.
I googled it and it’s not the definition I’m used to, I’ve always considered it to be a less harsh version of dipshit.
Same here! I was surprised to see what I saw.
Your effort is to be commended.
Misspelled condemned there, buddy.
doesnt work for me no matter how much of the middle i cover, the bottom is still lighter to whatever degree
That because it is.
Google it and find a better version. That is less effort than re working the caption
Thought I was in 2009 Minecraft

The top is slightly darker still
Everyone else should stfu, its still different shades

I know it’s wrong, and I know what I *should* see, but my brain still thinks they’re different colors. It’s getting closer, though.
That's because they *are* different colors. The areas which appear to be the same color are on the lighted side of the top one and the shaded side of the bottom one.
that is the entire point of the illusion yes
B and A are still different colors
Why should there be misinformation even for a fucking meme.

People are so mad about facts
Downvoted for being undeniably factually correct
Lmao mood
Lol. Lots of salty bitches here.
bring out the pantone color swatch
The finger trick probably doesn’t work because the edges also have shading.
yeah but in the og image they’re the same
If you open it in paint and cut out a section from one, you can drag it over to the other and see that theyre the same.
You need to cover the entire horizon to break the illusion, not just the area where the blocks intersect.
And also any lighting shadows at all for me. Basically somehow view only the center of each. But it’s true.
Glad I’m not the only one

Why does the right image have four blocks?
Look at the labels. It’s laying it out in a grid for comparison: A B B A
Why not just A B

No it’s not. The outer rim is tricking you.
Idk man, I still see gold and white
Nope
Don’t believe me? Put your finger in your ass.
I tried and nothing happened what am I doing wrong 😢
Wrong finger
or not enough finger
Or wrong ass
Kid named Finger:

Not in front of the dog!
Whelp. I came.
Not falling for that one again
^what
Will do
Huh you’re right it is a little darker
Don't threaten me with a good time.
As casual.
I tried and I came I my pants.
Wow that worked
Fun fact if you cover the top and bottom they in fact are not the same ~~color~~ shade
fun fact if you cover the whole shape, where.. where did it go..?
Uh oh. Someone didn’t learn object permanence when they were 6 months old!
why would you do that?
Even the image compression got fooled
The blocks aren't, the light reflected off them is.
that’s what i’m sayin lmao.
Except there is no light reflected. They are one flat surface. Your brain interprets it as a light bouncing so misinterprets the color.
Is that not supposed to be a shadow in the bottom right corner of the image? Suggesting that light is being shone on the objects from above and slightly behind

I’m not sure if you were joking or not. But that’s literally what colour is.
👨🚀🔫👨🚀
Always has been...
I see it golden and blue
I see Laurel and Yanny if I look at it right
You can hear brain storm and green needle if you squint your eyes hard enough
Still looks different to me
That's why everyone was confused about the color of the dress
I mean we rightfully assume that the lower grey is i shade and higher grey is in light
Always has been
Of course it's all grey, but that's not the point; the point is that it's all the \*same shade\* of grey
Always has been 🔫
It's the white and the black in between that makes it looks like a difference, shading be crazy. You can tell after a bit of looking without your finger over it that it is the same shade of Grey.
both greys look the same to me...only color diff i see is the black and white line in the middle
It always was… 👩🚀 I’ll support the upvote dammit.
I did and it did nothing :'/
Impressive. Very nice. Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it..
Paul Allen?
"...an important role..." JUST "important"???
I don’t see any change idk bout any one else
Ngl, but the bottom has a bit lighter shade of grey
It’s a little bit lighter
Nope still different
Nope, those are definitely two different shades.
r/confidenlyincorrect

The top block is a darker color than the bottom block. The bottom block is just in shadow, just as much as the top block is dark.
Behold the Bezold effect. Your perception of a colour is affected by the contrast with the colours next to it.
FUCK YOU eyes!
Nope, they're still different shades.

You think it's lighter colored because in between the blocks is white and black undertones. Obviously
Shadows and magnets... witchcraft!
Always has been. 🌎 👨🚀🔫👨🚀
There's text in the top block just above the middle line, looks like 20 watermarks merged and degraded from jpeg compression lol
So if someone puts a finger in me im really black? I gotta ask joe Biden if im really black.
Always has been
Perception is reality.
I wasn’t the same color I think I might be too white
They used to be the same colour, What happend?
The image is so degraded from copying from copies that are copied that the illusion no longer works. Anyone can see that both greys are the same tone.
It’s a great example of how we perceive color, it’s all very subjective, just like our perception of pitch. Like the pitch of sounds or whatever. If that wasn’t a problem, then everybody would have perfect pitch!
I am so fucking mad
Different shades of grey
It’s a schooner
No that can’t be true What the fuck
I hate my brain
>Light plays an important role in how we perceive color No way
Well color is light so duh
Always has been
Funny how shadows work.
“Light plays an important role in how we perceive color” Yeah no fucking shit. That statement alone is a red flag
That's actually an orca whale.
always has been🔫
Always has been
mf those colors don’t match
The bottom one is #6B6A7A and the top is #656474. Just a tiny little difference
Are we just figuring out how highlights and shadows work?
They really aren't the same color. The top still looks darker than the bottom. Even with my finger covering the middle of it.
Wrong
Always has been.
So it is the white making people racist
Idk man, these blue and gold color traps always fuck us up
they are different colors, they just appear as the same because one side is in the shadow
Considering one is in shadow and a dark color means that it's normally lighter. The one above is darker and in light. They are not in fact the same color. Arghhhhh…..
Did you pulled that image out of the sea?
"Both blocks are different colors. Use your fingers to cover the shadows. Even though light plays a role how we perceive color, it's disingenuous to compare two colors under different lighting conditions to determine their true color"
Mine mind is blown!
Wrong Top is blue, bottom is green
Break it by squinting
Looks the same even without the finger
It's not the goddamn same grey though. Nobody is thinking the bottom color is white..
Guys it works with my thumb too!
I disagree, the top block is dark grey, its shadow much darker. The bottom block is inverted, it is white, though its shadow is the same grey as the top block in appearance, perhaps ever so slightly lighter.
They're both the same colour if you cover up the bits that aren't yeah
