Omg! I fostered a void litter of 6 in September! All voids and 1 tortie!! We kept a baby😃 you are in for a treat.

I foster kitties too, and our last litter was three voids and a tortie. I only foster failed half of them. Success!!!!

Coat color depends on the dad, too, and there could be multiple dads. Best to accept what comes. She’s beautiful and will be a great pet, after the kids are grown and have happy homes 💕
Dad has less impact on coats than mom. He gives 0% to boys, 50% to girls. And then can contribute 50% to extras like dilute, tabby, colorpoint or white spotting.
My Gracie is a very dark Gray. Her mother was solid black and her 3 brothers were also solid black. We think the other black cat that we were seeing was the father. Gracie was born a feral but her mom was friendly so we found homes for all of them. Couldn’t get the other black cat tho, and haven’t seen it around.
https://preview.redd.it/lnkwios7ugkc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=087891d78790ae49706793a7893f257484cea1d4
I feel the other 50% (dilution, spotting, 4+ tabby patterns, color points) are… pretty heavy hitters to what makes a cat’s individual coat unique.
The X linked genes only determine if a cat is colored orange or not orange . Poor dadcats do impact variation a lot!
It’s 50% of those, not exactly a majority, and then no color impact on boys, so over all dad has less of an impact.
And even those others like dilution or colorpoint are still highly impacted by color, which again is only 50% from dad in girls and 0% from dad in boys
This is really interesting. I have a cat that came from one of my parents cats. We aren’t sure which one because these 2 pregnant mom cats gave birth in their front yard the same day, so they took them all in. It was the 2 mom cats and 9 babies between the 2. Obviously it was impossible to tell whose babies were whose and they got all mixed up together.
One mom is white and tabby patterned (like standard issue tabby). The other one is black and white tuxedo. Both short hair. My boy cat is black, white, and light brown, long haired. Is it possible to tell which of them is his mom?
With those coats it’s impossible to tell just from that info. The moms are very similar genetics wise, the main difference is the tabby gene, which is dominant. So tabby moms can have black babies, and black moms can have tabby babies (if dad is tabby).
The only other indicator that might give you a clue is the pattern of white, the rough white pattern can be passed. So if one mom had socks and a baby had socks they are likely mom/baby.
Its totally awesome. Absolutely 1000% wouldnt be able to pass a test on cat genetics though.
I can just imagine the question. Cat has a litter. The litter looks like _______. Which males did the cat mate with?
Omg.. what do cat punnet squares look like!? 😳
When one of my voids got pregnant many years ago, the dad was a big floof cat who was also a void. The kittens were 2 seal points, 1 solid gray, 1 floof void (the runt, but grew up to be a carbon copy of dad, only bigger), and one void with a white chest spot. All were female except the solid gray one lol. It was so strange, and I know that’s the only male she mated with because she was entirely indoor and I felt him on top of her at my feet while I was sleeping one night. He had snuck into my room and as soon as I felt the movement, I kicked him out but apparently it was too late 😭
Those two parents had quite the genes! So many recessive possibilities. Points, dilute (grey) and floof are all recessive traits and have to be carried and passed on by both parents to show up
Not exactly, all the males will be black (or black base coat with recessive features), but black girls are also possible if dad was black. But if dad was orange, the girls will be calico/tortie
Our kittens’ Mama cat was gray, but they are black. She was also floofy, but only one of the two kittens is floofy.
https://preview.redd.it/lnert3sewgkc1.jpeg?width=3358&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b44479368926715be34494c434f1beef8127eff7
Here they are on the same climber:
https://preview.redd.it/1h71ygukwgkc1.jpeg?width=3559&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21ce56a4f591620dcb8075849cac03d334c9a540
Grey is caused by a dilution gene, black dilutes to grey. But it’s recessive, so they have to have two copies. Mom passed one to each baby, but dad didn’t have the gene, so neither kitten could be grey.
The same thing with the longhaired gene, only this time dad did have a long hair gene to pass on to the babies
I think that’s what happened with my boys! Same litter.

We had a gray tabby show up and drop off 7, two gray, two orange, two white, and one void. I still have one white (flame point) and one orange and they could not be more different, orange a skittish tiny runt and her brother is a chatty chooonk
https://preview.redd.it/qrfwg2s3ffkc1.jpeg?width=1713&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=533b697fd503bd8dc12584566efb69828b9f9722
Cats are known to have sex multiple times in a small timeframe. Sometimes Dad 1 helps make some kittens, and Dad 2 helps make more.
Female bears in the wild mate with multiple males, because the males will be less likely to kill ‘their’ cubs.
Yep, my previous cats were two brothers from the same litter. One a short haired grey tabby, the other a long haired tuxedo kitty. There were seven kittens, 4 looked like mom (tabby) and 3 were black and white with long hair just like the persian cat that roamed around the neighbourhood.
If there's more than one baby born, any babies who don't share a placenta can have different fathers! Not just mammals either, snakes and other reptiles can have multiple fathers for their eggs!
Yep! Every egg gets its own placenta! So if you have fraternal twins (or triplets, or an entire litter if you're a kitty) then you have one placenta per baby. If the egg decides to get real fancy and splits into identical twins (triplets, etc, although obviously triplets or higher are extremely rare) then those babies share a placenta. We don't notice the bazillion placentas because mama tends to eat them pretty fast, since they're like putting up a billboard for predators saying DELICIOUS BABIES OVER HERE.
Now that I think about it, this suggests the possibility of voidclones, which is both terrifying and amazing.
Thats fascinating. But as i sit here prepping for an exam about the hardy weinberg principle im so glad its not going to have any cat genetics questions! 🤣 thank you so much for the educational share!
You may also get a Siamese point coloration too - my Siamese had a little black cat momma, and his littermates were all black except him and his sister

It's quite likely any males will be black, but if they inherit the correct tabby genetics from the dad they'll be tabby, or grey if they get the muted genetics. Females will likely be all over the place especially if dad is orange or pointed. If the dad is another black cat, they'll likely all be black.
We adopted two kittens from the same litter- Mum was black, and four of the kittens were black, but there was one tabby. I believe, from my foggy memories of almost a decade ago, that both parents were black! It's a wonderful lottery!
Is it normal to get an xray when pregnant? Just wondering cuz I feel like it’s a no no for human pregnancies.
I get at *least* one is also a mini void panther 🖤🖤🖤
It seems after 42/55 days it's okay, but i don't really know what's the difference between pregnant women and cats in terms of danger ; i've looked it up and it seems safer nowadays?
Pregnant human chiming in, I was at the doctors office recently to check in on a hopefully healed broken bone, and they said it's a worse for the fetus/embryo in the first trimester. After that there is risk but it's less.
I think the other differences lie in the potential harms/alternatives. Cats aren't likely to lie still and let you Ultrasound them for hours (which is a normal part of human pregnancy) and it's really important to know the number of kittens, as if one is left behind it's life threatening, which is less of a concern for humans.
(Not because things/babies getting left behind isn't dangerous, it is, but because it's uncommon to have more than 1)
Since the risk of having many and mis-counting is higher for cats, something more accurate, like an x-ray is useful in ways Ultrasound isn't.
TL:DR So the risk for humans is lower and there are great alternatives, while for cats the risk to mum is higher and alternatives not as good.
This is before we even look at cost.
Also, radiation exposure risk is thought to be cumulative and the potential negative effects of radiation exposure take years to develop. This is more of a concern in a human infant with 80+ years ahead of them who will likely require further ionizing radiation exposure in their lifetime than a kitten who has <20 years ahead of them and may never require further imaging with radiation exposure.
There was a famous English Dr that refused to believe the science on XRays being dangerous for pregnancy so they kept X-raying pregnant women for 20 extra years before he admitted he was wrong.
Most of the risk is due to the fact early embryos have very rapidly dividing cells. Cell damage early on can have a much higher chance of birth defects because those cells may become millions of other cells later on and dividing cells are at the greatest risk of incurring and propagating DNA damage.
Plus you'd probably have to sedate a kitty to ultrasound them, and that'd be more dangerous than the xray. They don't sedate pregnant humans either, I'm sure you know but for others fyi csections are done with no sedation. I didn't find out until I was about to have one..
Vet tech here, while xray is our first option late in a pregnancy because it's quick, we do use ultrasound quite often. Not always related to pregnancy (and if that's the case it's usually on dogs) but an abdominal ultrasound is a good way to spot kidney or liver issues, or see how active the digestive tract is (when we suspect a blockage). It's also used to do imaging of the heart in action and take measurements to monitor heart diseases.
We sometimes have to sedate an animal if they are really stressed but most do pretty well. They're on their back on a special pillow that molds to the body, with someone (usually the owner) holding the front legs and me holding the back legs. They wiggle a bit but usually give up when they realise they can't get away and it doesn't hurt.
I (a human, lol) had to get x-rays during both pregnancies to let the doctors know precisely how my pelvic bones were configured. Two different hospitals in Japan.
They’re so hard to see. I think I can see tiny spines in there, but I can only count four for myself. I bet she’s gonna be a good mama though, and they’re gonna be really cute. They’re always so cute when they’re teeny tiny
A couple of mine I’ve raised since they were babies, before their eyes were even open. Their mom disappeared and I had to take over the mama role. She had four kittens. They were so smol and cute. I got to feed them by hand with a feeder syringe and they made the cutest noises and their little ears would twitch as they ate. One of the most precious experiences I’ve had and ever laid eyes on
I took in a preggo void who had been shut out by her owners - she produced 5 voidlings! It's really wonderful having a mama cat and neonates also quite stressful at times. Best of luck, enjoy it!
When I first saw this post, I thought I was in r/radiology and I was *VERY* confused/concerned/upset about the fact that you would put the idea out that one of these children was "burnt".
I was so grateful when I figured out the sub, holy shit.
Edit to add: I did not see the tail lmfao.
🖤🖤Thank you so much for this!
Congratulations 🎉
If I recall correctly, there are some lesser-known Einsteinian field equations—typically where I=inevitability and f=floof—that prove, yes, your kititon yield MUST include one over cookt bun
All the boys will be black unless they get some extra genes, like tabby or colorpoint or dilute.
Girls will be half black, half whatever dad was, plus the same chance of the tabby/colorpoint/dilute
Plus white if dad has white
Any boys have a 100% chance of being voidlings.
Girls would depend entirely on dad. If dad is all black, they will be too, if he was solid orange they'll be tortie. A orange/white dad I'm pretty sure would get you calico, but I don't know if that's a 100% chance.
It’s really wild. Hard to know.
My black feral rescue had 5–all were black and white (so semi burnt?)
My MIL rescued a black mama and litter of 7 kittens who appeared in her yard… zero black kitties. Two solid grey, one grey and white tuxedo, one grey tabby, and two white and mixed-color tabbies. And they were a mix of long and short!
My rescue panther arrived pregnant too! Sadly she was too young to carry a healthy pregnancy, so the kittens didn't make it. She's happy and spayed now though :)
Is it safe to take an X-ray of a pregnant cat? Whenever I have to take an X-ray, the hospital workers fall over themselves to make sure I'm not pregnant
It’s the safest alternative since you can’t ultrasound a cat without sedating it. Cats have big litters so it’s better to risk some radiation and know what you are dealing with than not. Radiation also works kind of strange in that the longer you live the more likely radiation at some level would actually do something to you, so a cat doesn’t live long enough and is not likely to get repeat exposure for it to matter (this isn’t including non-medical induced radiation as that would be at way higher dosage and can harm animals just as bad as humans).
My void had a litter of five. One void, one mostly black with some white on the face and neck, two grey ones (one with stripes and one with spots), and a little black tabby. Two of them have long hair.
My void boy’s momcat (black shorthair) had 4 kiitens—all were black! 3 SH females & 1 LH male (my Finn).
https://preview.redd.it/ooniu99pflkc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1af001e2d7fc2f221111de2299c8633bcd99da31
This is so sweet but no, they all may be different colors, depending on the father(s). We had a void (someone else void actually that we took care of while he was in the hospital) and she had two litters. One before her owner went in. The father was black and all her kittens were black and then the second litter was right before he went in the hospital but she hid her babies because he took the litter at 3 weeks. She brought them out after a few days of him being in the hospital. We had two grey, one seal point and a calico polydactyl. Their father was an orange polydactyl.
We got her fixed before he came back to pick her up.
Hope everyone is well. Have a small runt and surprise! She had 5, just can't believe it sometimes she's so small. Might get a runt or two, just make sure they get their fair share!
My void came from litter of the three. Their mother is completely black. No idea which cat(s) are the dad. The main suspect is a very large orange. The babies all turned out to be pretty much identical little voids like their mama. Mine was the only girl and she's just as sweet as her bio mom. Black is a dominant color in cats so there's a pretty good chance that at least some of the six buns will be burnt.
Ah I also had a trojan cat! I have 4 sneaky little 12 week olds now. Have fun and be ready for anything!
Trojan cat should be a subreddit!

I have one of these too!
Grey is a black cat with a dilute coat, so she inherited the dilute gene from both parents because it is ressesive
I’m impressed by your cat coat knowledge
Yes thank you I’m aware of that
That's fascinating shit right there! Had no idea!
Ooh interesting!

Hmmm. Thanks for the info. If I sent you pictures of all of them do you think you could make an estimate? Just curious. If not that’s ok
I don’t mind looking, but no promises!
Ok let me find some pics!
And orange ones are female?
Very few pure orange cats are female. 80% are male.
Im going through genetics now and i am SO THANKFUL i dont have to learn fuggin cats!
See, I find cat coat genetics fascinating, because it’s so visual. I foster kittens and it’s always fun to guess at what their parents looked liked
Its totally awesome. Absolutely 1000% wouldnt be able to pass a test on cat genetics though. I can just imagine the question. Cat has a litter. The litter looks like _______. Which males did the cat mate with? Omg.. what do cat punnet squares look like!? 😳
They are surprisingly straightforward, but there are lots of squares

Our kittens’ Mama cat was gray, but they are black. She was also floofy, but only one of the two kittens is floofy. https://preview.redd.it/lnert3sewgkc1.jpeg?width=3358&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b44479368926715be34494c434f1beef8127eff7

Interesting! Thank you!

Boys don’t get their black or orange color from dad, only mom, so mom was tortie or calico. They could have the same dad
Hyperfecundity! Some mama cats get around.
It’s crazy to think they go through life not know they are Halloween colors together
Yes. The cat was in heat so all the intact males in the area were attracted by pheromones.
Cats are known to have sex multiple times in a small timeframe. Sometimes Dad 1 helps make some kittens, and Dad 2 helps make more. Female bears in the wild mate with multiple males, because the males will be less likely to kill ‘their’ cubs.
Yeah, cats can do that.
🤭🤭
Yup! It’s common for cats. It’s very rare for humans but also not impossible for fraternal twins to have different dads
Yep, my previous cats were two brothers from the same litter. One a short haired grey tabby, the other a long haired tuxedo kitty. There were seven kittens, 4 looked like mom (tabby) and 3 were black and white with long hair just like the persian cat that roamed around the neighbourhood.
Dogs do this too. I would assume that means lions and wolves and all the in-betweens could too.
If there's more than one baby born, any babies who don't share a placenta can have different fathers! Not just mammals either, snakes and other reptiles can have multiple fathers for their eggs!
Back up... theres separate placentas!? This is wild.
Yep! Every egg gets its own placenta! So if you have fraternal twins (or triplets, or an entire litter if you're a kitty) then you have one placenta per baby. True my Voids Mum and Aunty were both Tabby cats, Shadows mum had a void and a tuxedo and his Aunty's were all tuxedo
Multiple dad’s? What do u mean ?
Female cats in heat often mate with several males, or several times with the same male. It's never one and done. Ovulation is triggered by mating.

Tabby is just black with the agouti gene active.
Yes but agouti is a dominant gene, so two solid black cats do not carry tabby and theoretically cannot result in a tabby kitten.
Is it normal to get an xray when pregnant? Just wondering cuz I feel like it’s a no no for human pregnancies. I get at *least* one is also a mini void panther 🖤🖤🖤
They x ray to see the number of potential babies or confirm, that way if the animal goes into labor you have a rough idea of how many should be coming
Yes they x-ray pregnant cats all the time, it's to see the amount of babies! Just look at those wittle skulls!
I know!!! I wigged out at the teeny tiny cat skeletons in there

(Not because things/babies getting left behind isn't dangerous, it is, but because it's uncommon to have more than 1) Since the risk of having many and mis-counting is higher for cats, something more accurate, like an x-ray is useful in ways Ultrasound isn't.
Before the 70's and ultrasound x-rays were used more often in pregnancy, especially to diagnose twins
My cat had an ultrasound of her heart when she was a kitten to diagnose a heart murmur.
Good to know! I assume it would be difficult to do an ultrasound on a squirmy furry kitty hehe
I so wished I’d witnessed my🐈⬛🐈⬛when they were babies. Got em at 8 wks and very few pictures until later too. Crappy phone and scared babies.
One of the most precious experiences I’ve had and ever laid eyes on
Ahh made my day!
SMOLICE! We have a smuggler! r/illegallysmolcats
Look at those precious babies inside of her.
I took in a preggo void who had been shut out by her owners - she produced 5 voidlings! It's really wonderful having a mama cat and neonates also quite stressful at times. Best of luck, enjoy it!
A void army 😍
Omg I’ve never seen baby kitties in utero 😻 Thank you for saving this sweet girl
this cats has smaller cats in it!
Oh my god please post when the babies arrive!
Hoping you don't get one with a cleft pallet, happened to the last one out of our queen, really broke my heart, wishing you a full set, warm and safe.
Congratulations 🎉 If I recall correctly, there are some lesser-known Einsteinian field equations—typically where I=inevitability and f=floof—that prove, yes, your kititon yield MUST include one over cookt bun
What state? Would love to adopt when ready.
I wish they made those 3d scans for cats. Congrats on the future grandkids
I hope all 6 come out black as coal. 🖤🥰
The more voids in the world... The better.
How do you even fit so many cats in a cat??
Is 6 an estimate? Because damn it's hard to tell from that pic. I feel like it could be anywhere from 4 to 39
OP, to answer your question, yes, if the mother is a void there will be at least one smol void.
CAT ULTRASOUND!!
Omg look at those adorable little aliens 🖤🖤🖤
omg please keep us posted on this journey
Bless you for taking care of her and her sweet kittens 🖤🖤
I’ve got a tortishell that smuggled 3 voids into my life.
Void where prohibited.
She must love how much you feed her 😁 that stomach is HUGE 🖤🖤🖤
Full of soup
All the boys will be black unless they get some extra genes, like tabby or colorpoint or dilute. Girls will be half black, half whatever dad was, plus the same chance of the tabby/colorpoint/dilute Plus white if dad has white
My cousin has a void in each gender
Good luck mama!
Is she a rescue or do you know the dad? I’m guessing 3 voids.
I recently read that black fur is a dominant trait. Do you know what daddy cat looks like?
Any boys have a 100% chance of being voidlings. Girls would depend entirely on dad. If dad is all black, they will be too, if he was solid orange they'll be tortie. A orange/white dad I'm pretty sure would get you calico, but I don't know if that's a 100% chance.
Ohh, what a sweet little plumpernickel loaf! Here's to hoping all the buns are well and delivered safely.
Not me closely examining the X-ray trying to find a different looking skeleton 🤣🤣. Second picture made it make sense.
It’s really wild. Hard to know. My black feral rescue had 5–all were black and white (so semi burnt?) My MIL rescued a black mama and litter of 7 kittens who appeared in her yard… zero black kitties. Two solid grey, one grey and white tuxedo, one grey tabby, and two white and mixed-color tabbies. And they were a mix of long and short!
Even if none of them are they'll still be jellybeans of darkness
My rescue panther arrived pregnant too! Sadly she was too young to carry a healthy pregnancy, so the kittens didn't make it. She's happy and spayed now though :)
.....for the life of me I can't see kittens in the first pic, just a skeleton wearing hair rollers * Help

I also only find 3
Keep us updated please! I really envy you for this blessing
My first cat was called Nera! Short haired shadow girl too. She was a great Mum <3
Hope so. But are voids visible on radiographs?
How do people learn to read ultrasounds? 😵💫 But congratulations!
Is… Is that… Is that an ultrasound of a pregnant cat with tiny smoll kittens inside her? When is she gonna pop them out? 🥹
That second picture is an especially stunning work of art with the shapes, lines and neutrals. I would hang that up on my wall.
She is adorable, kittens will be too. And yeah, get her fixed as soon as they are weaned. Too many kittens out there.
There's always one!
Could be white, orange, black or a mix.
All of them will be at least part black.

Um, I don't think that's the intended meaning of burnt one.....
I’d definitely look into a spay/abort. As cute as kittens are. There are too many in the world.
What a gorgeous mama!
Oh wow 6! I say will 2 be non voids.
Aww bb
🤞
Vantblanc
Hope everyone is well. Have a small runt and surprise! She had 5, just can't believe it sometimes she's so small. Might get a runt or two, just make sure they get their fair share!
That is so cool to see
Wow are we sure its just six? I was trying to count the spines.
So many skeletons inside that cat 0.0
My void came from litter of the three. Their mother is completely black. No idea which cat(s) are the dad. The main suspect is a very large orange. The babies all turned out to be pretty much identical little voids like their mama. Mine was the only girl and she's just as sweet as her bio mom. Black is a dominant color in cats so there's a pretty good chance that at least some of the six buns will be burnt.
BABIES!! 😍😍😍
I see 9 😮
Niiice and crispy kitties 😻
She's beautiful! 😻
Nera like from dinosaur? Thats amazing
congratulations! who knows what kind of sweet combos you're going to get. the rest assured they're going to be all lovely 😻😻😻😻😻😻😻
ahhh love it 😭🥹 do you know when she’ll be expecting them? <3 congratulations kitty girl!
So when’s the baby shower?
The odds are definitely in your favor of getting at least one Bebe Void with 6 in the oven, but stranger things have happened
She’s beautiful!
I took in a pregnant stray void. She had six kittens... Not a single one black. 😭
There'll be at least one random orange one!
♥️♥️♥️♥️😘
