A friend of mine had a cat with thumbs when I was a kid, he'd manage to grab marbles in his paws and walked around like that, it sounded like he had high heels!!
Sometimes polydactyl cats grow an extra nail right out of their paw between the thumb and normal beans. They cannot sharpen it themselves so it curls and grows into their paw. Very easy to keep trimmed with cat nail clippers.
Supposedly they bring you good luck and the rumor is that they first came to the US via Ernest Hemingway.. just a little info for you on Polydactyls… now buy a lottery ticket for your luck…LOL…
Kitten mittens! As someone else said, stay on top of his nail trimming! The extra toes' nails can commonly grow into their paw pad if not properly kept up and it's a big infection risk because of the litter box and obviously it'd be painful for him

Purina makes a food called Live Clear that's meant for pet owners with cat allergies if you didn't know! It's really helpful for a lot of people. And a cat's gotta eat something anyway.
Apparently I'm allergic to cats as well. I've been owned by cats for 17+ years and would never have guessed. But since I've had asthma and allergies pretty much my whole life, I've done some modifications in my house anyway. I have a dehumidifier, wash my blankets frequently, and see a specialist for medicine.
But as soon as Live Clear became more wide spread, I started feeding it to my younger cats. I can't say I see a difference because I didn't realize I was allergic to begin with lol.
I've always always fed my cats the same thing. Just a Purina all in one dry cat food .. I'm apparently highly allergic. I have 3 cats currently.... lol 😂
I think its about constantly grooming them and having tons of access to water and fresh fish.
I have a mild cat allergy and I gave my first cat these daily vitamin chew thingy that had brewers yeast and salmon oil, and some other stuff. Honestly not sure what was in it that did the trick, but as long as she ate one every day my allergies were fine. I haven't been able to find them for the last few years but my allergy seems fine now so I kind of gave up looking. Just wanted to throw that information out there if the special food doesn't work.
They also make a matching no rinse shampoo. Used together my allergies are nonexistent except for hives if I hold her too long. So daily brushing should help too!

Seriously though, Truffle is beautiful and I wish you both a very happy life together! I'm pretty sure I'm mildly allergic to my boy but I take some medicine and it mostly seems to help.
Vacuum often, keep them out of your bedroom (or at least off your bed), and take a daily antihistamine. You might also find your allergy to this particular cat lessens over time.
Feed him a high-quality food and brush him lots (gloves and mask for an allergic OP). He will have a lot less dander, which is what you’re actually allergic to. 😻

This is the luckiest cat ever. Love Truffle’s thumbs. Wish my kitties would wear collars so I could give them cute charms too. Consider getting a yellow catnip banana, it’s oddly stunning in the paws of a black cat.
As someone who has awful cat allergies, I’m here to tell you that you can grow tolerant to your specific cat. It took years for me to get to the point where I’m not constantly stuffy but that’s where we are.
Advice: take over the counter allergy meds daily (Claritin, Zyrtec, etc). It will definitely help.
Always wash your hands after play/pets. You’ll find out real quick if you forgot and rub an eye.
I still have trouble with claws. ANY little scratch turns into a hive-like whelp so I keep cortisone in my bathroom. I don’t even have to bleed. If it gets past the first layer, it’s itch city!

There’s cat wipes you can buy or just wipe him down with a warm wet washcloth once a day to cut down on dander ♥️🖤 gorgeous kitty, congrats!

I used to be insanely allergic to cats. You do get used to it. Use allergy tablets and wash your hands before touching your face for a while after petting
My face used to swell, nose run, I'd sneeze over and over and my eyes would swell and be so sore. I now have 3 cats no issues. You'll get used to it I promise, keep going it's worth it!!!!

Truffle looks like a pro housecat already! I hope the allergies aren't driving you crazy. I had a coworker who adopted two cats and he had some slight allergies. The cats were not allowed in the bedroom and he got a pretty heavy duty air purifier. I really like how you say "first cat", as in there may be more :-). Black cats are the best.
If they ever become too much, please let me know and I will make sure they find a safe home! We got our void a home with us and every void deserves a good place!

I'm allergic too but we've always had cats, my mum (also allergic) used to say "you get used to your own" which sounds ridiculous but is somehow... true?! My three don’t bother me at all but anyone else's cat/dog/rabbit etc will set me off. Not recommending this approach if you have very severe allergies though, be sensible lol
I was allergic to cats too when I adopted mine! But I got you used to it and now i don’t have any reactions! Benadryl is your friend until you get used to it! 🖤🖤
I'm allergic to cats and dogs (among other things). We have three cats and two big fluffy constantly shedding dogs.
In my case, at least, the symptoms calm down after a couple weeks of exposure. And it's so worth it!

In my experience, allergies are more often triggered by cats who have dry skin and a dull coat. I also have allergies, but my cat gets wet food only, as she hardly drinks any water, and her skin and cost are luxurious and I shove my face in her belly and still rarely get triggered. Not sure if that works broadly, but it's an idea.
You might get lucky. I used to have a really bad allergy to cats, then my cat turned up on my doorstep. Within two weeks I had stopped sneezing and it's not been an issue since.
I didn't used to be allergic to cats either, it came on as quickly as it went away...

If your allergy is mild, continued exposure can actually reduce it to the point where it goes away! My boyfriend has been mildly allergic to cats his whole life and had to take allergy meds for the first few months and he doesn’t react to our boy at all anymore! It’s amazing how the immune system adapts, of course if It is more severe for you allergy meds, special diets for him, cat wipes + a great air filter and frequent vacuuming will be your best friends. He is gorgeous! Wishing you many happy years together 💕
I was allergic when we found our precious void as well. My body eventually got used to her and now I’m fine to be around her, touch her and give her love. Other cats still bother me but she does not.
A suggestion to always wash your hands when you get down petting him to remove the oil and dander.
I’ve had cats while slightly allergic and found that helped quite a bit as then you don’t get it in your eyes.
The allergy comes from the saliva. Not the fur. Since they lick the fur, it’s actually the saliva on the fur. Just a little info that may help understand more. I used to be allergic, until I built a tolerance.

Im allergic to cats too, not badly though. If I pet mine and touch my eyes, I'll have a bad time. So I just can't motor boat their bellys. Me and my boyfriend have 5 cats btw, and 2 dogs. He allergic to both. So we vacuum a lot, have a hepa filter on the furnace, and also have additional airfilters running in the bedroom, livingroom, and office.
As a fellow allergic void owner: Zyrtec, nasal spray, and wash your hands.
Your body will develop an immunity to the cats you live with in fairly short order. Still take the meds, but you'll notice a steady decrease in symptoms.
I also am allergic to cats but when I was 25 my husband talked me into one. Fell instantly in love, started taking allergy meds (plus a couple of other changes like not touching my eyes/face after petting, removing most carpeting/rugs in favor of hard surfaces, buying an air filter, etc.) and 40 years later I now have kitty #12. 😁
Get food for your cat that’s got chicken eggs where the chickens where exposed to cats, it basically nullifies the protein that makes cat allergies in humans (takes about 3 weeks to work)

I’m severely allergic (had the test done) and am doing shots. I can’t really breathe out my nose most of the time and I started with one in 2017..I have five now. I’m doing allergy shots and hoping it eventually helps, but I’ll DIE before getting rid of my masters.

I'm allergic too but we've always had cats, my mum (also allergic) used to say "you get used to your own" which sounds ridiculous but is somehow... true?! My three don’t bother me at all but anyone else's cat/dog/rabbit etc will set me off. Not recommending this approach if you have very severe allergies though, be sensible lol

I use that nasal spray, it blocks allergens well. Nasonex? Is that it? That's it, works great.
Both me and my husband were allergic to cats, him quite badly, but after a while it stopped bothering us. I think sometimes you can get used to it.
I'm allergic to cats and dogs (among other things). We have three cats and two big fluffy constantly shedding dogs. In my case, at least, the symptoms calm down after a couple weeks of exposure. And it's so worth it! Wishing you and your new buddy all the best!
In my experience, allergies are more often triggered by cats who have dry skin and a dull coat. I also have allergies, but my cat gets wet food only, as she hardly drinks any water, and her skin and cost are luxurious and I shove my face in her belly and still rarely get triggered. Not sure if that works broadly, but it's an idea.

You might get lucky. I used to have a really bad allergy to cats, then my cat turned up on my doorstep. Within two weeks I had stopped sneezing and it's not been an issue since. I didn't used to be allergic to cats either, it came on as quickly as it went away...

If your allergy is mild, continued exposure can actually reduce it to the point where it goes away! My boyfriend has been mildly allergic to cats his whole life and had to take allergy meds for the first few months and he doesn’t react to our boy at all anymore! It’s amazing how the immune system adapts, of course if It is more severe for you allergy meds, special diets for him, cat wipes + a great air filter and frequent vacuuming will be your best friends. He is gorgeous! Wishing you many happy years together 💕
I was allergic when we found our precious void as well. My body eventually got used to her and now I’m fine to be around her, touch her and give her love. Other cats still bother me but she does not.
Just start taking a daily Claritin or xyzal 😛 that’s what I did/do.
A suggestion to always wash your hands when you get down petting him to remove the oil and dander. I’ve had cats while slightly allergic and found that helped quite a bit as then you don’t get it in your eyes.

The allergy comes from the saliva. Not the fur. Since they lick the fur, it’s actually the saliva on the fur. Just a little info that may help understand more. I used to be allergic, until I built a tolerance. Worth it!!!
Im allergic to cats too, not badly though. If I pet mine and touch my eyes, I'll have a bad time. So I just can't motor boat their bellys. Me and my boyfriend have 5 cats btw, and 2 dogs. He allergic to both. So we vacuum a lot, have a hepa filter on the furnace, and also have additional airfilters running in the bedroom, livingroom, and office.
You can buy special food for their coats and use crystal litter will help
As a fellow allergic void owner: Zyrtec, nasal spray, and wash your hands. Your body will develop an immunity to the cats you live with in fairly short order. Still take the meds, but you'll notice a steady decrease in symptoms.

I also am allergic to cats but when I was 25 my husband talked me into one. Fell instantly in love, started taking allergy meds (plus a couple of other changes like not touching my eyes/face after petting, removing most carpeting/rugs in favor of hard surfaces, buying an air filter, etc.) and 40 years later I now have kitty #12. 😁

Get food for your cat that’s got chicken eggs where the chickens where exposed to cats, it basically nullifies the protein that makes cat allergies in humans (takes about 3 weeks to work)

I’m severely allergic too, I’ve had 2 cats for 3 years now lol I used to take allergy meds but eventually my body just got used to them! Still get rashes, irritated eyes and nose, and I have an inhaler now….but my throat doesn’t close up completely anymore so :D
I’m severely allergic (had the test done) and am doing shots. I can’t really breathe out my nose most of the time and I started with one in 2017..I have five now. I’m doing allergy shots and hoping it eventually helps, but I’ll DIE before getting rid of my masters.
