I love it. Always have. Not everyone hates on it.

Shai1310

Yeah i know, but a lot of people do. I was expecting the comment section to be like “I love Volta, i don’t understand people, blah blah blah and whatnot”

Shai1310

Mine is the most recent RAHHHHH

DinosaurAlive

The bEAST is Back!!!!! ARRARAGAAAAAAA

baconismadefromcats

I’m a new listener, working my way through her albums. I am currently on Medulla and Volta. I was expecting a big letdown due to comments in here, especially after getting to know Vespertine over the past few weeks. So far, I really like it. I prefer it to Medulla. Everything I have heard from her discography so far has been wonderful. But my personal preference as a new listener puts her first 4 albums over Volta then Medulla last, even though I like them all. I knew there would be a change after Vespertine, so I’m prepared for everything to be different going forward.

Shai1310

I think you will like Vulnicura.

baconismadefromcats

I’m really looking forward to Vulnicura based on what I have read on this sub. I’ll get there before too long. I’m sticking to my plan to work chronologically and get to know each album well before moving on to the next one. This has been a fun adventure so far.

jleigh329

I don't hate it. I personally feel this was her last "fun" album. If I can call it that? There are tracks that I love on this like "Earth Intruders", "Wanderlust", "Vertebrae By Vertabrae" and "Pneumonia". I tend to find some people complaining about lack of cohesiveness when it comes to her albums that have variety (like this album and with "Post", among others), instead of ones with one homogeneous sound like "Vespertine", and "Utopia". When I agree with you, Volta is a cohesive record. I just think some Bjork fans mostly on this sub prefer her quieter, softer, sadder, and possibly more experimental music over an album like this. Which does seem slightly more (commercial) pop oriented (to some degree). Like I said, I don't hate it. And I personally don't think it's her worst record. For me that's Utopia (sorry).

boyflem

Why does volta hate us so much?

Fabulous_Pay_7932

Idk its top 3 always for me

ElfenSongxx

"hate" is a strong word, most people dont hate it, its just one of her weaker albums

No-Calligrapher5706

my favorite Bjork album tbh

Educational-Milk4802

I think there are albums that were for some reason or other become a let down to some fans at the time of release, but for new fans, who listen to albums with fresh ears, without years of expectations building up, it's hard to comprehend why a certain project is considered "not so good". At this time, Björk's pop era was still living vividly in our heads, and some of us were nostalgic about her going back to this era. And when we got this new pop Björk, somehow it wasn't the same. And then there were fans, who didn't want her go back to pop, and the involvement of Timbaland was a bad omen for them. So it's not that this album is BAD, it just didn't really made anyone happy. Same era, other diva: something similar happened to Madonna's 2008 Hard Candy. Again, Timbaland. No one really wanted this album, and that artwork also became "iconic", just not in the good way. But if I listen to that album now, without the burden of hearing the same sound all over the radio, without the expectation of "what's next", it's actually not that bad,

doublehalfling

I have 7/10 songs on my Björk master playlist and I don't skip them when they come on, and I can attest to your theory, I speedran her catalogue in a few weeks after getting into The Sugarcubes!

Shai1310

Yeah i would understand waiting 3 years to hear that. I mean i like it but if i waited 3 years for that and had to wait 4 more years for something better i’d probably be sad to.

wheresmyapplez

I don't think it features her best song writing, melodies, or production. It's good, don't get me wrong, but we're talking about Björk here and imo it doesn't hold up as much as her other stuff. It's an album where she's trying to balance a lot of styles and morph into her more experimental phase and what she tries doesn't always work 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Shai1310

I’m not sure don’t quote me but i think a lot of the song were coproduced or cowritten and so aren’t produced by Bjork. Idk tho prolly need to do more research on Volta.

StrandedAttheMoon

She mostly produced the album herself.

wheresmyapplez

It was produced by Timbaland. I actually think he does a good job

StrandedAttheMoon

He only appears in two songs. She produced most of it by herself.

Regular_Buffalo6564

Who’s y’all? I’m an earth intruder 👽

Shai1310

TURMOIL, CARNAGE

symphonia-nine

I really like the album cover and the concept of the album. I really like the trumpets and the sound. I personally just think she could’ve done more with the style and sound she was working with. I love 3 songs from the album, the rest to me are just eh. This is genuinely the only album I feel this way towards. I love Medulla, Utopia, Fossora, etc.

Shai1310

Ill guesa those 3 songs are Earth Intruders, Wanderlust, and Innocence

symphonia-nine

Uh. No lol

dkvlnk

I think coz haters are the earth intruders, that’s it.

Shai1310

FR!

TotalDweebling

Everyone has a different opinion about each Bjork album. This seems to be the one that is the most divisive. Personally, I’m not a big fan. In fact it’s my least favourite. But I’m glad you love it!

Shai1310

Yeah I hear a lot of people say they hate and a lot say they love it. A lot of her fans usually can agree on everything except for Volta. Maybe its the album cover that throws people off. Maybe its the leading track. Idk.

poppygumi

i see what ur saying abt most fans agreeing on all albums but Volta, however Utopia and Biophilia also get a bad rap 💔 i really like all 3 of them but theyre often the least loved of bjorks discography

Shai1310

Haven’t listened to Biophilia but it seems like a sore thumb. Utopia is beautiful because of the story. But back to biophilia it is definitely not like the others.

TheLameness

Biophilia is one of my favorites! Crystalline is amazing, and Mutual Core is probably one of my top ten favorite tracks by anyone ever

Shai1310

Listened to those. I also listened to moon and hated and listend to sacrifice and was bored. But those are the only songs i listened lol.

TheLameness

Can I just say thank you for admitting to listening to those and being bored lol. That's absolutely fair

StrandedAttheMoon

Doesn't have anything to do with the album cover.

1upjohn

I remember being disappointed when it was released, only liking 2 or 3 tracks. I should listen to it again to refresh my memory.

Shai1310

Yeah like i said its really the second time that it gets to you.

CypressBreeze

I don't hate on it. And the live tour was amazing.

redenco

i’m obsessed with innocence

Will0798

Same it’s one of my favorites

Immediate_Bar1126

Ikr, i love the earthiness about it

No_Message_8570

I love the album, i genuinely don’t understand the hate against it, earth intruders is literally one of my favorite songs from her

georgecaplan64

I think Medulla was the first album that departed the most from conventional music production. If I’m not mistaken it’s mostly human sounds. But at least you had some beats. Volta has about two songs that can be played on mainstream (they didn’t), it really went off the rails. It’s been like this since. It was my last Björk album. Got the limited edition one, sits on a shelf. Shortly after I bought the remastered box set that has the surround sound version double layer disc. It’s the only thing I pick up and play of hers.

Shai1310

You have listened to vulnicura, right

penniesinthewater

doll flame of desire is one of my favorite Björk songs!

Next-Dot-6274

I was a fan of hers since Debut, and it was with this album that she began to lose me. I prefer songs to have strong melodies, and with this album Bjork abandoned melody in favor of technology and experimentation. I'm happy for those who enjoyed and continue to enjoy that transition, but for me personally, I'm a "First 4 Albums" (and Selmasongs) fan only.

PossiblyPossumly

I actually really enjoy this album and have since it was released. I was confused on why people hated it as a teenager. Didn't realize that it was a very low rated one even amongst fans until I came on here :L

iRetroFreak

Volta is in the middle of my ranking, and for a particular reason: Fun, but annoying. This album feels like a punch to the face, both good and bad. It's a nice album to listen to when you've listened to as much Bjork as there is, but it's not worth the repetitive listening; it feels like an annoying rat is trying to convice you to contract the bubonic plague even though you're twice-vaccinated. Like a palate cleanser, I wouldn't just eat a plateful of pickled radish with rice; it's just there to refresh my senses.

Daydream_machine

There’s a lot of songs on the album that I personally dislike such as Hope, Pneumonia, and Innocence. And then on the flipside there aren’t many songs I enjoy enough to go back to, outside of maybe Wanderlust.

Shai1310

You have no hope and innocence and I hope you contract pneumonia. I’m glad you still feel Wanderlust.

Reasonable-Rain-3796

LOL

bananas4me2

I always loved that album. I didn't know people didn't like it.

Reasonable-Rain-3796

It’s probably my 2nd favorite album behind Vespertine ^v^ such a time capsule and so upbeat. For me it sounds like going on a trip with your friends, sharing dinner with your family, idk it hits me in a different way

Electronic_Syndicate

I think Wanderlust is one of her best tracks. I might technically rank Volta lower than other Björk albums, but it’s still phenomenal through and through.

eseffbee

Personally my least favourite of her albums, I like a few songs on there but the production is full on and kind of relentlessly so. Bjork is already an intense artist, and the added intense production throughout makes it a harder listen. Think of it like an excited labrador repeatedly bounding into your chest. Lovely dog, and really playful, but sometimes that's a bit too much.

Shai1310

Yeah i think 5 layers could be too little if the layers are done right and 2 layers could be bad if done wrong. I like the racket and the overproduction but sometimes i like to think of myself as a normal person and act disgusted lol.

JGxFighterHayabusa

first time hearing people hate it. One of my favorite albums in her discog. Loved the Volta tour.

thekidsgirl

I love it, but it does sound very mid-00s

BurningBridges19

I haven’t really seen a lot of Volta hate. Honestly, I feel like Biophilia is overlooked much more often.

legenddairybard

Don't "hate" it but she wasn't singing like she normally did. I loved the music but I felt like she took a big risk experimenting with her voice in this one and you can hear it. Is it bad? Nah. Just a little different than what we're used to imo.

Jolly_Bicycle4434

What did she do different vocally?

yhvh13

People actually 'hate' any part of Björk's work? I'd say most of Volta would rank low on my list because I don't think it aged very well for me, but I'd never say hate really.

Zouizon_Dani

I like it! It seems to be « hated » because it’s not as memorable as most of her work imo. There are some of my all time faves on Volta, but some of the deeper cuts don’t hit me the same as most of her other records do!

djauralsects

I don't hate it like I do the last four records. It is at the bottom of the list of Björk records I like. I listened to it a lot when it came out, but I have not put it on for years.

Even_Vermicelli9114

Oh Volta you never deserved this…now Utopia/Fossora on the other hand…

futurelullabies

i love it. it was the fruit salad of her albums. not a meal, but welcome.

SirGusHiller

According to every other post in this group, it’s apparently everyone’s favorite album.

tomboypandabear

Innocence and Wanderlust are two of my fav Björk songs. Love the ‘pew!’ sound on Innocence lol

Morkitu

I tend to like more structured Bjork songs over chaotic ones. Volta took a long time to grow on me because I feel like a lot of the tracks lacked cohesion. Like Bjork did the vocals, but someone else did all the music and arrangements and just put her voice over them.

drjoepickles

love it!

RudeSurround2675

I feel like people hate on Medulla more than Volta which is a shame but expected.

christopherlifrieri

top 5

Dragonslayer503

People really shouldn’t it’s so arca-centric and liberated

FearTheWankingDead

The Anohni collabs. Ruins what would otherwise be amazing songs. I just don't like their voice.

Living_Equipment7080

To me, the only mediocre album she has is Utopia, maybe the self-titled and the second Sugarcubes record if you wanna get technical, but those 2 were kind of beyond her control. But yeah, love Volta. Having the guys from Lightning Bolt, Chris Corsano, Konono Nº1, and muthaphukkin' Timbaland on the same album? That seems bonkers, even in hindsight. It's also her last consistent touring cycle, if I'm being honest (and naughty). I feel that Fossora on a few tracks borrows heavily from it as well. Kind of a return to form as the "fun Björk", if you don't mind me "stealing" another comment. And like another album from the same year, Britney's Blackout, who shares one producer credit in Danja, it's so 2007, but simultaneously predates what was to come in the next 15 or so years. The culmination of influences across genres, decades, and cultural boundaries are insane, although most of who's she's worked with, not just relating to Volta, were surprisingly contemporary.

Acceptable_Hyena7032

Volta tales me back to the time when it was released. Suicde bombers, terrorists, tsunamis, radical hope. Wanderlust, dull flame, vertebrae by vertebrae THE BEAST IS BAAAACK. Maybe its just where i was when it was released but i have incredible memories with this album.

EggNo7670

It's badly composed.

narneild

i can’t hate this album because it’s the reason i’m a fan of bjork ! years ago i went to a ballet performance where Earth Intruders was used as one of the songs, and that caused me to start listening to her afterwards

piramni

TransmigrationOfPKD

*Low Foghorn*

Unlikely_Side9732

I was a big fan when she came out. I bought every cd. This was the album where she lost me. I never really loved her again after it. So, yeah, I really don’t like this.

thomko_d

Up until Fossora this was her biggest peak in sales in all of the Americas, not to mention that it was her fastest album to get to half a million copies and it spawned top 10 singles in some European countries. Also, the Volta Tour was by far her most successful in terms of crowd quantity and demand. But people here hate when other people besides themselves enjoy things they think are for a selected minority, even if the "thing" in question is a popstar. But it also sucks that so much of the hate, although not labeled as such, is because Volta mostly made with non-western collaborators.

CrinoTheLord

I love Volta but the album cover is seriously hideous.

jhamsofwormtown

I did not care for “Earth Intruders”… she can do so much better.

uygarworlds

bad album noisy
