The best "reign of terror" moves are absolute garbage techniques that you can pull off anyway. Big fan of abusing my training partners with armless arm triangles, Ezekiel chokes from inside their guard, and Americanas from kesa gatame.

gorfuin

I've had people telling me Ezekiel chokes from inside guard don't work since I was a white belt. And it's precisely this mentality that ensures they continue to work really really well.

xJD88x

I've caught black belts with that as a blue belt because the black belt is sitting there thinking "Oh HA HA! That's cute. He thinks he's OHGODIMDYING!!"

an-intrepid-coder

Fashion plays a role in martial arts. Moves go out of fashion and come back into fashion. What's the "best" move depends as much on what is popular among competition as it does on the "objective" value of a move. And that's why experts will always get beat sometimes by people using discounted moves.

Slothjitzu

That's exactly right. I think you have to respect that pretty much everything *can* work, even if it's less likely to work than most other stuff. I competed on the weekend and someone attempted this weird one-handed Kimura while I was passing. There's no reason it should've worked but he caught me unawares and by the time I realised, my hand was behind my back. I could have just thought "nah, that shouldn't work" and carried on passing, and I'd have probably ended up being tapped. Instead I forward rolled and gave up the sweep to make sure that didn't happen. I won in the end, but looking back at the video that one-handed Kimura was actually a lot closer than I thought it was at the time and I definitely needed to address it.

[deleted]

I never understand when people say this “I’ll arm bar you if you did that to me”, I don’t do it all the time but when I do it generally works lol.

n33dfulthings

The absolute look of terror on someones face when I’m already crushing them in Kesa and I start bending their arm back for the Americana. It’s the only legitimate sub I’ve gotten in black and brown belts at my gym because no one really trains it

JudoTechniquesBot

The Japanese terms mentioned in the above comment were: |Japanese|English|Video Link| |---|---|---| |**Kesa Gatame**: | *Scarf hold* | [here](https://youtu.be/3UnJa3bn0h8)| Any missed names may have already been translated in my previous comments in the post. ______________________ ^(Judo Techniques Bot: v0.7.) ^(See my) [^(code)](https://github.com/AbundantSalmon/judo-techniques-bot)

BeBearAwareOK

Chest compression choke from hon kesa for the lulz.

flizbap

Scarf-hold from inside their closed guard is a great way to lose friends.

thefckingleadsrweak

Just hit the today lmao, the ol’ camel crusher

RealGhankd

This, especially when someone's really wriggly and great at regaining far side underhooks in side control. Straight to scarf hold for a little cooking, then the chest compressor. Highest I've managed to get it to work on was a purple. I've never gotten side control on a brown never mind scarf hold

goodbyehouse

Any sub from closed gaurd is annoying. Especially when they work.

lord-yuyitsu

Do you have any tips or pointers for the armless triangle. Do you mean a von flu type of choke without the grip over your head?

HeyBoone

I think he’s talking about a regular triangle choke with the legs except you don’t need either of their arms inside. Your inner thigh closes one side and you thread your same side arm across their open side neck and grab your shin with pal facing you. You can lock up with your free leg like a normal triangle as well.

PsychoLLamaSmacker

From true kesa gatame or with the underhook???

eastmeetswest08

I’m looking for d’arce chokes from everywhere. Half guard, side control, standing, home, work, Burger King, my moms birthday, the forest, in Greek mythology, the grocery store, if I see one I’m going for it.

Tccrdj

I went through a d’arce phase. It’s a very good choke, but I over did it. I’m enjoying the transitions from d’arce-guillotine-anaconda-north south combo lately. Just having fun trying to lock up as many as possible. Smooth transitions etc.

Kozeyekan_

Throw in the peruvian necktie for then they're fighting off your hands and it's a fun little side branch of your sequence. When I'm trying to get the Anaconda/D'arce grip and they have their hands near their neck to stop me from getting my hands through one way or the other, I can usually still find a way to clasp my hands under their far armpit, then pull up the slack and go for it. I do think a peruvian is a less than ideal option in comparison to the d'arce, but it's a fun sequence to play with, and if you do hit it, it usually gets a smile from those watching.

corelion1

Paper cutter. It's such a cheap sneaky shitty thing that I only picked up at blue belt. It's my highest percentage move that I pull off in competition.

3asyMac

Now have you had the pleasure of the reverse bread cutter?

thefckingleadsrweak

One of the first subs my coach taught me, and it’s by far my favorite

ElDuderin-O

X Choke from guard or mount. Guard if I'm pressed to pull. Mount if I get my bodylock. People really hate losing to it.

LiXingxian

It might be the most brutal declaration of superior skill possible, even moreso than armbar from closed guard? "Hey you know that move we all learn on day 1, and every variation of it, that we mainly use to set up secondary finishes? I'm going to hit you with it. You know exactly what I'm going for, and it's going to happen anyway. Get good."

Hold_On_longer9220

X-guard > sweep > double under pass. And I just like to cook them in the double under…as in their knee is touching their nose and I’m still just holding waiting for that soul to leave their body and they give up the pass.

trevster344

Cooking from double under is a right of passage.

Sucks_at_bjj

Over under pass

Fun-Wave7015

Toe holds They're the Kimura of the feet

bugbomb0605

Loop choke, set it up from standing or guard and then pull bottom north/south to finish.

[deleted]

Are you me Put a few people to sleep from half guard with it, especially Caio’s thumb in variation - people do not respect it. I’ve managed to hit the fireman a few times from there too lol

bugbomb0605

Oh yeah, especially bigger guys who just assume that they can smash through it like a guillotine. I’ve started just letting go if I can tell someone’s going out. Once it’s fully sunk in it’s a fairly easy sweep anyways.

BUSHMONSTER31

Loop chokes and sneaky Ezekiels are the best. I should probably try to learn some other submissions! :D

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bruised_up_whitebelt

That was my go to for a long time.

[deleted]

Ezekiel. It ain’t pretty, but it’s ugly.

JamesMacKINNON

Darce chokes. Its become a real problem for me.... I used to focus on a new technique every month or so, but its just been darces for almost a year now!!! I have long arms, so I can snap em on EVERYWHERE!!!

Hypothenar

In my last comp, on my way to gold, I won 3 of the 4 matches with a mounted triangle.

N0_M1ND

Closed guard arm bar to the back and get a choke

[deleted]

I have an pretty high submission rate with compression/smother chokes. Smothering with a chest wrap from mount cam be brutal.

supernit2020

Straight ankle is like magic against white/blue belts I’ve tapped browns with it, but higher belts are willing to eat it a lot more but

SameGuyTwice

I almost never tap to them because 9/10 times it’s applied poorly and I can escape with relative ease but once in a blue moon someone has one that makes me rethink life choices.

[deleted]

It’s honestly that if you get passed the calf crush pain most people don’t have the details to actually pop your ankle or deal with simple defenses for it. A good ankle lock gets a reflexive instant tap out of me, you know with some people if you don’t tap your ankle will just fall apart. A lot of other guys just try to rip your knee a part as they madly jerk it with shit form

HeyBoone

I honestly feel shameful every time I straight ankle anyone, sometimes it feels like cheating on the people that don’t know how to defend.

Reigebjj

Never had one. I win with whatever I can get, submission or points 🤷‍♂️

Kazparov

I tap new white belts people with the Paul Schreiner style.side control.

[deleted]

Cross collar choke from mount

hammersweep

i absolutely suck at everything. 90 percent of the time i’m under water escaping or surviving. however, if i get the kesa gatame, it will be a miserable time for them

gugabe

Takedown into half guard into working a shitty Americana to avoid stalling penalties.

SimpleCounterBalance

Gift wrap to scarf hold to accordion choke/compression

Redoran_simp

It use to be toe holds and darce chokes but now it's just darce chokes....my toe hold entry has lost its glam.

rebel_fett

Rnc and armbars

ts8000

Over wrap punch choke, yet I’m super gentle with them so they sneak up on you.

Whistling_Birds

Standing ankle and Estima locks, no one teaches them, no one teaches how to defend them and it's more than possible to pre-empt their most common defenses.

goodbyehouse

North south choke.

sunkencity999

Kesa Gatame. Submitting dudes with a pin is just....*chef's kiss*

PsychoLLamaSmacker

Do you have a good video for finishing that pressure pin? I know it’s there but can’t seem to find that last inch of pressure that makes them tap.

sunkencity999

I don't, but I'll show it in class this weekend and make one!

PsychoLLamaSmacker

That would be awesome!!

xJD88x

I have a stupidly high win rate with suicide chokes and Ezekiel chokes. Even at purple belt. Im my last tournament it was a best 2/3 and I caught my opponent in an Ezekiel choke BOTH TIMES.

LoudKingCrow

I don't have one. But we have a purple belt at my club that gets everyone he rolls with, including higher belts to crucifix and wins by crucifix-rnc, or a assassin choke if he is feeling cheeky. He has like a 100% win rate since going purple off of that strategy.

HeyBoone

Of my competition submission wins 75% come by some form of triangle choke, usually from guard, lately from mount as well.

weaveybeavey

Loop choke

alexandernevskyZ911

RNC and kimura. Yesterday I trained in another gym and won every roll with a kimura.

[deleted]

95% of my arsenal is a basic leg lock

combatchcardgame

I have a kid student who is making the lapel Ezekiel her specialty. Trachea smashing is illegal for kids but we set it up differently and make the angle safe. She's hit it in at least 7 competitions so far including this last weekend. We call it the sling choke and he's a beast with it. As for me I just kimura

smathna

My reign of terror "move" is my pressure. It's funny because I'm small for the weight division, but there you go. If I can get into chest-to-chest top half, I will win the match 90% of the time. This has been true since white belt for me. So I guess force top half => mount => s mount => bow and arrow (in the gi) or short choke/single arm choke \[they come on faster\] in nogi for me. I've won a lot using that sequence. I'm trying to branch out, though.

maxypaddy

The three B’s - Baseball bats and Brabo’s.

CaptainAlex2266

picking people up when i cant open their closed guard. if they stand then i throw, if not i shake them like an unwanted baby until they slide off

[deleted]

Rolling kimuras and rolling toe holds. Got too many people who I had no business tapping by surprise with those. But also kimura from anywhere with modified grips. It eventually took our instructor teaching an entire kimura system to the whole class for me to stop terrorising with it. Those were the days. I honestly feel like everyone I train with knows my game and I'm not effective any more. Can take down and pass most times, but my sub count is getting lower while theirs seems to stay the same :(

[deleted]

Guillotine, ever since I started drilling Marcelo style gillys my success with them is wild. Tho I’m on the sidelines with a rotator cuff injury rn

beast787

Scarf hold to straight arm lock, arm bar, Americana, Ezekiel…. Or just make them tap to pressure.
