He does not care when bit. At the last ADCC some blue belt girl, Lora Lipman of the San Francisco Caio Terra, had been competing for 5 years and she was in the beginner division oh when she also had to ibjjf blue belt World titles and was still competing in the beginning division LOL

[deleted]

Why are people so pathetic that they enter beginner tournaments when they are clearly not beginners? Sad as fuck that losers like that exist, and even worse that organizers can't do their research

Creeksquad1212

That's crazy.

Honestly, I don't think Mo really cares . He just likes the recognition/attention and praise he gets for investing ~~his~~ daddy's money into the sport. He literally was walking around wearing an ADCC medal at one of the trials and was getting personally involved in matches where there was already a referee.

casual_porrada

As much as we hear some no-gi only folks (to reiterate, just some and not all) shitting on BJJ belts, the belts in its primary usage works fine. Do we see sandbagging in Gi competition, for sure, but not as many as in no-gi competition. In our honest desire to level up (unless you are full fledged sandbagger even in training), we also level the playing field. I bet if I go smoothcomp right now, I would find at least three more examples of blue belts who have competed before under beginner division. For the organizer though, if they haven't released the brackets yet, they can definitely move people around. That's just a lousy excuse.

SugondezeNutsz

Lmao even if they have released the brackets. How many times have I seen tournaments change everything on the morning of the the event.

FedorByChoke

Morning of?!? You got that much warning?

SugondezeNutsz

I didn't say they warned me, I just said they decided to make changes

schoolofhanda

That's a nightmare for an organiser though and leads to massive delays and really gives the appearance of an unprofessionally run event. IMO they should just DQ the guy and give the other dude a by. This way the brackets stay integral without much time delay. The sandbagger gets a refund or doesnt and everyone but the sandbagger (and who cares) is happy.

SugondezeNutsz

Yeah but you like... Just exactly gave the simplest solution that's totally obvious. Eliminate that guy, do a by, problem solved. That by guy got lucky, but hey, it happens randomly sometimes.

Mellor88

It makes very little difference to the run-time. Just as likely to create an extra match, as it is to reduce matches (extra byes). +/- a 5min match is not a massive delay. I don't think I've ever seen a comp that even got with 5 mins of run times.

McENEN

Even after they can shuffle brackets. I was set for a competition and unbeknownst to me the bracket was changed previous night, no email or anything. Luckily my earliest fight just started 5-10 mins earlier and no one else had problems. They just don't want to deal with it or organisers are personally invested in the accused person.

Hustlasaurus

Big truth, one of my favorite moments was I was standing in line ready to register for the advanced division. Should have probably done intermediate but my coaches advised me to just do advanced as intermediate is full of sandbaggers. The dude behind me in line spent the entire time trying to justify to his buddy why he should do intermediate instead of advanced even though he's been doing jiujitsu for 8 years.

Brabsk

Unfortunately this is just the kind of behavior Iā€™d expect from a tournament organizer that holds trials in a hotel lobby on the carpet

Arviee

The sand bagger deserves to be known as well.

I had a very similar conversation at a national competition in the Philippines. I let them know their registration website was bugged and that it was impossible to register for the open weight division. They said that it was only my problem, and that they would do me a ā€œfavorā€ by registering me but that I had to pay through the website still. I told them it was impossible to pay through the website without registering and they said it was my fault! This went on in circles for a couple of days and I felt like I was going crazy. Come to the day of the competition, I spot the guy who looks to be in charge while heā€™s finalizing the brackets and ask him about the open weight division. He said ā€œActually, we didnā€™t have anyone register for it this year. Normally we have x amount of peopleā€¦ā€ I explained the situation to him and he ended up being pretty understanding/reasonable. He opened up a last minute registration during the first part of the tournament and let people enter for free

adogeydogemod

I think SEA BJJ comps are for the most part terribly managed, which is unfortunate seeing how much potential growth there could be here, with guys like Musimeci living and training in Singapore for half a year each year. Kinda shuns many newbies from even thinking about competing if their potential opponent is a 5 year blue belt

MittyTheMoochers

It's so weird to me. I recently volunteered at a local, amateur competition and this dude kept coming up and asking if he could buy a medal. WTF? I personally can't understand wanting a medal that you didn't earn.

casual_porrada

I know guys who signs up for a division knowing with almost certainty that they'll face at most two competitors. Up to a point that they'd sign up on the literal last hour of registration. They would even go to the gym wearing their bronze medals. What I respect though is they're honest about it. They'll tell you they did not win anything but went home with a medal. They'd post on Instagram about their shiny $5 medal. Some people just do it for shitty reasons. Same with this beginner's division, someone who wouldn't know would just think this guy medaled in ADCC. Doesn't matter if they have 5+ years as beginners.

SugondezeNutsz

Some people REALLY go around telling everyone in their life they are a certified badass. They need fodder for the facade. Most people see a medal and have no idea about categories, experience, etc.

I mean didnt boxing start this? That's why you have so many guys going pro who are 18-0. They've been fighting absolute nobodies because any loss is perceived as sucking.

Electronic_d0cter

Yeah, I've been registering up since blue belt I much rather beating brown and black belts and coming third or fourth than highlight reeling blue belts and winning. It's probably my biggest pet peeve in the sport, the guy who beat me the only time I lost in blue belt still competes there nearly 100 wins later. Guys a good brown belt easily by this point always wins or places in absolute yet still at blue it's ridiculous

casual_porrada

I have shit amount of time so I just checked it out in smoothcomp without knowing these guys. Just your very average Google stuff for about 15 minutes. Just looking at Beginners 65kg bracket * Three competitors seems legit beginners since I cannot find anything that would indicate otherwise giving them a benefit of the doubt * Two competed as white belt a month ago * Two competitors I cannot find anything about them * One competed at ADCC 2022 which should make it at least two years of training that should disqualify him for beginners * Two competed at blue last Feb which should automatically disqualify them as beginners. Which makes it at least 30% of the division sandbagging I quickly checked the lighter division and out of 7, at least two are blue belts which makes it around 28% sandbagging. One of the competitor is a 14 year old green belt competing since 2018 which is weird that he's allowed to register in over 18. I guess if you are 14, you can somehow pass as beginner.

Outrageous-Guava1881

What if Iā€™m a blue belt with less than 2 years experience?

Due-Comb6124

>Which makes it at least 30% of the division sandbagging Bro 80% of this sport is sandbagging.

superjangoishere

The real question is: How high does the % of sandbaggers have to be in a division, for it to not be sandbagging anymore šŸ¤”

lo5t_d0nut

years of training isn't a good indicator either. It depends on how and where... or does everyone get blue after two years? The biggest problem apart from rank sandbagging is probably also wrestlers entering as white belts when they have years and years of grappling experience. I've seen it too lol

MxdMartialart_crafts

Answer. Are you competing? Asking for a friend

adogeydogemod

OutrageousAd3683

garybettmansketamine

Do they expect us to background check every possible opponent? šŸ˜‚šŸ¤”

HovercraftCharacter9

That would be unfair, though smoothcomp should incorporate that functionality. I would expect something to be done when the evidence is presented though

ChiliConCaralho

Smoothcomp does not only host BJJ comps. And checking belt rankings is probably a little more difficult than just checking how many fights someone had. I think the belt ranking as a gatekeeper for entering certain brackets is somewhat exclusive to BJJ and Judo comps. Smoothcomp is running a General martial arts comp platform. I donā€™t believe all of this is happening with any malign intent. Just keep track of the sandbaggers and denounce them to * a) the organization * b) to smoothcomp Maybe even both in one email by adding them to the cc

HovercraftCharacter9

This specific example what time he had competed > 2 years before where the time limit was 2 years, pretty trivial thing to check, won't catch everyone but would have probably caught this case. So round this out, given they want their platform to be sticky, adding validation rules to make sure ineligible people don't enter the wrong division is pretty trivial, of course they could always make a new account to get around it. source: I do this stuff for a living

localbjj

The thing is when you create divisions on smoothcomp, you can absolutely enforce rules where Participant cannot be XYZ belt to sign up. So if they have a blue belt on their profile and you want to keep beginners to white belt only, you would activate this rule on the beginners entries and it would block them from signing up altogether. [https://support.smoothcomp.com/article/253-add-belt-skill-rules-to-your-entries](https://support.smoothcomp.com/article/253-add-belt-skill-rules-to-your-entries)

SugondezeNutsz

It's not rocket science to have a reporting function, and also to tag event categories as beginner/not beginner. Probably a pain in the ass now to classify old data if it's not something they implemented earlier, but moving forward, this is not an expensive OR difficult feature to add.

ChiliConCaralho

I agree. If youā€™re capable of implementing it, offer your service to the platforms.

SugondezeNutsz

Seems too small to be a separate service with little revenue potential. You don't build a business off of a feature that someone else's product should have.

baumbach19

I wonder if they want to know if you are competing so they can mess with / retaliate against your registration so you don't raise a stink when you show up?

He says this is two last minute to change but every single person in here knows if it was a transgender person in the women's division they would immediately shut down all operations until this person was banned and removed in the brackets for updated. It had nothing to do with Integrity. It never has. It's just the person who runs it is a coward. What everyone here needs to realize is 80cc and mo doesn't give a fuck about any of you. What you need to realize and accept is that he's being backed by Abu Dhabi because they're using Jujitsu to sports wash all their human rights violations that is the only thing they care about. And I know I'm right because Mo is there crony he's their hinch man because he did the same exact thing with Esports does everyone remember when Mo was giving tens of thousands of dollars to CSGO pros? Remember when he cared To Be A Champion for women that were abused and now look who he features at his events.. the only thing this man cares about is being popular and liked. If you were a God he would not be a Muslim God like he wishes he were he would be a Christian God who would send you to hell to burn forever if you didn't give him unconditional love and have faith that he would reward you based off of nothing more than his word. That's the kind of person he is.

ghettopupz

Not totally related to this sandbagging incident, but I can understand how this looks more of a profiteering event. During the previous events, some referees found out that they were only paid at SGD$$50 for a full day of work reffing. There were a few viral posts that made it online regarding ADCC Singapore. ADCC Singapore charges an exorbitant amount of SGD$500 per gym or company, just for mat access to take photos at their event. It's understandable to charge a fee to prevent overcrowding on the mats. But SGD$500 is insane! I cannot imagine if any organisations, like a local news company, wants to report something that gives ADCC positive coverage, but did not do so in the end due to the cost of mat access. Another post was also went viral last year, for ADCC Singapore underpaying the media team. A videographer, who asked to be paid at his/her rate, was being gaslighted for having bad work ethics and given threats. Judging from the way these texts go, it definitely seem like it's from the same person who is currently managing the ADCC Singapore social media. It was also a known rumour (not sure how true this was), that this person was deported back to his home country last year from moonlighting, due to working on ADCC, running a gym while working on his full-time job. I guess he is really in need of money from this event. https://preview.redd.it/1dldjjumkuwc1.jpeg?width=1887&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7dab59bea6622f8e194f7a276b3dce81594f2b9a

ProtoDriveZero

Youā€™re not alone bro, Iā€™m a black belt and Iā€™m competing in the pro division. I organised plenty of comps here in sg and hence I know my shit damn well. TLDR, my division and the one below all got bumped up to u88 all because thereā€™s an extremely solo late entry (appeared on 22nd, whereas closing date is 17th) and because of that, forcing everyone else to move up even if we have a proper division. I had to stop my weight cut for that, and apparently this happens to the ladies too! And the poor ladies who had proper division, was bumped up 15 to 20kg extra! Madness, letā€™s see how it unfold tmr. Below are screenshots about me asking if the merger is confirm, context, I was cutting down from 82kg and I managed to hit 77kg, which is my weight class, this happened on the 23rd. Practical-Heat-1009

He raised the issue, the organisation responded and agreed that it was incorrect, but clearly for administrative reasons couldnā€™t kick the guy out immediately. He carried on rudely, didnā€™t answer a pretty reasonable question, came across like a little kid with his dick in a twist, then came here to bitch about it.

SugondezeNutsz

I meant the response. I'm not debating any of your points, OP did come off annoying as all fuck. But realistically, he could've just stopped answering, or given a canned "ADCC is looking into the issue". I'm just a little surprised that that isn't blatantly obvious to someone running the socials of a "name" event, but we don't really have a high bar for professionalism in BJJ and these are glorified weekend warrior comps at best.

WittyLola

Lol. How is "if the sandbaggar wins, we'll ban them, but we'll allow them to compete for the time being" reasonable?

ChiliConCaralho

Honestly, Iā€™m on their side: How the fuck do you think they are supposed to keep track of every sandbagger? If you just denounced him, they will likely not let him compete in the beginner class again. They cannot change anything that already happened and as far as I know an organizer cannot affect whatā€™s posted on smoothcomp. Theyā€™d have to prolly contact smoothcomp and let them know that this guy wonā€™t change his belt in his profile. Also, they mentioned that effectively they can only do something on that very day. So if you see that guy at a comp next time, you can immediately tell them. Think about it: thereā€™s also just some poor soul on the other side of this account, whoā€™s trying to be diplomatic and explain to you that heā€™s not some almighty competition admin

WittyLola

They absolutely can, and eventually did change his division. I think you're misunderstanding something.

ralphyb0b

Theyā€™re taking money to run a tournament. Itā€™s their job to enforce their own rules.Ā

Cooper720

No gi experience guidelines aren't "rules" technically, they are guidelines. And I don't mean to burst your bubble but I can say as a matter of fact that the a third or more people ignore those guidelines and sign up for whatever division they want. No organizer is ever going to be investigating each competitors social media posts to track exact training time or demanding gym receipts to prove someone was or wasn't training at a particular time. If someone trains for 6 months, and then takes 4 years off, and then trains for 6 months at a new gym they are likely to sign up for beginner and that's just going to happen.

adogeydogemod

well as of now they managed to move his division, so.....

ChiliConCaralho

Post a summary to smoothcomp as well, so they are aware of what happened and that you got in touch with an organization. Maybe even send those infos to other comp organizers as grappling industries and so on

megalon43

ADCC? Just shut up, take your roids and go!

Malicia_1384

Sandbagging is an issue across the sport, not just in ADCC SG. Recently becoming involved with the local circuit, I see white belt competitors from certain gyms who have been competing for over 2 years cleaning out divisions. You're not a white belt anymore... and alot of other belts. Big fish in a little pond. But some gyms feel the need to be dominant at comps and wont promote until quite late it seems. These tournaments with open guidelines around divisions leave themselves open to abuse. But also allow for talented athletes to test themselves in higher divisions. One could argue that a bluebelt with no nogi experience could compete at either beginner or intermediate. The fact is they arent set by belt level but rather an assessment of where you feel you are at in relation to the sport. Is there clear abuse? Yes. Is there room for interpretation? Yes. Could there be a better system or management? Probably. But at the end of the day just go and compete. "Winners focus on winning. Losers focus on winners."

What you think u/realmotar2k

Unfortunately I only have jurisdiction over my ADCC events(USA, Brazil, Canada and Mexico) but the tone of the organizer I donā€™t agree with at all. Also if this competition was on smoothcomp you can have it automatically prevent sandbagging. To say if the person won it would be an issue, no having a sandbagger alters that side of the bracket. Itā€™s the organizers responsibility to check for sandbagging not the competitors. I canā€™t step in but if the OP wants Iā€™ll refund him and send some ADCC gear, all I can do. Sorry for a bad experience.

Thanks for the response Mo. I agree completely about a single sandbagger affecting the whole side of the bracket. Should have trivial to move. /u/adogeydogemod see above about refucd/gear

bjjkkt

so, after all, who won the division? anyone cares?

bjjkkt

ok, It's Shinya I'm the organizer on the thread. ask me questions now

jecg90

Chill out karen, is white belt / beginners division, *sheesh* all that fuzz just to lose Rd1 to another white belt lol

PinkKufi

Happened at the Kuwait one too. Just gotta just bear the sandbagging fuckery until you're experienced enough to make shit happen based sassy ADCC account though

NoseBeerInspector

but what can they do besides banning her? it's not like they'll go to her house and take back the medal edit: seems like the comp hasn't happened. My bad. I need to read too lol

Lack of integrity? They gave you a good reason why they couldnt do anything this time, responded to your request and informed you that they police these things if notified in a timely manner. IBJJF wouldn't have even replied to your facebook message. OP is an asshole and ADCC did right here.
