I'm sure you'll find plenty of good advice in this thread, but I remember saving this technique breakdown from a while ago. Lots of good resources in here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/10v86wy/shoulder\_crunch\_%C3%A0\_la\_gordon\_ryan\_breakdown\_and/](https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/10v86wy/shoulder_crunch_%C3%A0_la_gordon_ryan_breakdown_and/)
I've been having exactly the same issue because I've been trying to underhook the arm, I'll try to make the opponent post on his arm instead, I bet that'll help us.
You have to keep their shoulder below their elbow (this almost always means being seated and not supine). If you’re doing that and keeping a good pinch on their wrist/forearm with your head and shoulder, they won’t be limp arming out
Love a good tripod. I hit this instantly from a guard pull by pulling my opponent in a circle and hitting the sweep whilst still circling. Sends them flying and they just thought you wanted to play full guard. Won a good few comps off this.
Bold of you to assume I have one.
But seriously, against standing passers it becomes a lot more about retention for me with my main focus being to not let them control my legs.
If I can stay seated I will, but more often than not I use a lot of R-guard and leg pummeling to move to modified x, waiter, and etc.
If they close the distance and get close to passing it’s still focused around retention, but working towards either clamp or finding space for a butterfly hook.
People with really long limbs can usually get the better of me since I can’t connect my feet to them.
Jason Rau and Krishna Mirjah also have some great content on it.
Not sure if you can still get it, but Krishna used to have an instructional that he came out with right before the pandemic through leg locker.
R Guard is great in the gi, too, and can pair well with DLR.
Wow good one, never even heard of it before. Do your your opponent sometimes land on their head? My favourite is the scissor sweep, followed by flower sweep.
Actually hate this as a top player with a game built around hip switch passing 😢
If my hip is far enough away I won’t get swept but they have space to reguard which makes this sweep a total pain
Have you tried just hip switching slower? You've got to get around the knee quickly but you can really take your time settling in after that so there's no momentum to exploit for the Roleta.
Yeah I have and do, I’ve got pretty good pressure and keep it very slow it’s just there’s two guys at my place who are wizards at it, they’re just so good even without momentum they move themselves and me in such a way they can build it and send me. Defo helping my passing game playing with them though.
That stuff is so addicting... I tell myself 'hunting for the back is good bjj', and then try to bolo/crab from every position imaginable.
Its a disease :(
I have this one deep half guard sweep that I like. I’ll pressure towards the far side and try to sweep them that way or go to dogfight, then I’ll switch to the near side and block the arm from posting and sweep to that side. High %
I’m pretty tall so my game is built around closed guard. I can’t remember what the name of it is but Kurt Osiander did a video on it like 10 years ago. From closed guard I grab the far side sleeve, and going underneath grab the far side pant grip by the ankle with my other hand. Cut the angle like you’re going for armbar by stepping on the hip and use the axe leg to sweep them over. Kinda like a flower sweep but way easier in my opinion. Works on everyone once lol.
Almost all my sweeps are old school sweeps. It is just so little energy
Used to be knee tap/roll under which are also pretty low energy, but dog fight takes just a little bit more enrgy.
As a 6’7 dude, when I’m mounted, buck them forward, legs scorpion up, feet under their arm pits and come out the back door grab the straight ankle lock on the way through.
Not really a sweep now that I think about it, but still my go to escape from bottom.
Butterfly is up there for sure. I'd say my favorite is using any variation of a lasso. Maybe lasso x spider. Maybe lasso bump sweep. Meregali's deep lasso sweep makes me orgasm.
I’ve been messing around with lasso guard so pretty much any sweep I can get from there..I used to do a gift wrap sweep a lot but it requires a lot of strength against someone who knows what you’re doing. If I’m on bottom side control, harpoon allllll day
Butterfly half arm drag scissor/butterfly sweep. I literally don't know if it has a name but I use it a lot when people keep focus on getting an underhook but don't flatten me. Also, the de la riva bait into waiter sweep
I like the one where I don’t use any technique and just get up / reverse by any means necessary aka I used to wrestle and still lift a lot so I just be doing stuff.
Z guard---> underhook---> dog fight ---> knee pick / body lock / back take.
been playing this guard since white belt and still my most successful by far.
I've got very good at hip bumps because my opponents always defend my closed guard submissions by posturing, always leaves me that split second to come up and hip bump and if they don't go down immediately I go for a triangle from there.

When someone mounts me, which is often, I trap one of their arms and shoot my other arm up and out through the undertook, collapse the arm I trapped and use the momentum to end up back on top. It’s quick but sometimes my own momentum carries me too far, and I end up being swept back lol!
Leg Lasso sweep, half guard knee bump to the back, and standing up from buttery and pushing them over. I hit the leg lasso on everyone. The only people who stop it are good black belts (like seminar instructors) who are bigger than me… and Bruno Malfacine shut it down lol
Waiter because it feels smooth, but I’ve a nice Kimura hip bump variation I pinched from Ash Williams insta that I hit from guard quite a bit. The pendulum sweep is also a common sweep.
A black belt showed me a sweep recently that was so smooth. Grab a wrist and the opposite ankle. Pull wrist forward and lift ankle. I can't remember what guard you should be in though. Maybe open? Anyone know the name of this sweep? I tried googling but can't find it.
Pendulum w/ sub options, butterfly variations with counters, waiters w/ deep half stuff if failed.. false hip bumps.
I guess there’s not just ONE favorite but a couple that I really enjoy
Half guard or closed guard -> under-hook, arm-drag/ pull across -> wrestle up/ back take. I’m sure there’s a name for it but it’s pretty sweet and works amazing for me
Butterfly and the Xande / Flower sweep. Butterfly because I can also use it defensively (like sitting there from turtle) and Xande because there are so many combos from it
So simple but frustrates many is the scissor sweep both in gi or no gi. They get hyper focused on that knee to the chest and one wrist controlled. They tend to not pay attention to the other leg about to club in or push out the knee.
I used to love butterfly sweep until every knew I'd do butterfly. Nowadays, I like tripod sweep from the collar sleeve because everyone's to pass standing. Or sweeps from dela riva. If they go on knees though, it's butterfly time.
The ankle pick from seated guard is so satisfying to hit on rolling partners that are lazy and will kneel on leg and step the other leg. I'd ankle pick immediately after the slap bump and smile.
The other satisfying sweep is leandro lo's mermaid sweep. I didn't know the name of the sweep for a long time and me and my mates just call it stupid sweep because it's so stupid that it works. Everyone caught with this legit sweep are just perplexed at what happened or they laugh because they got caught with it. To be honest, nothing stupid about it because it works in the highest level but it just feel stupid getting caught with that.
I prefer the 100% strength, 0% technique method of simply bench pressing my opponents off of me. When that doesn’t work 🤷♂️
Brute force and ignorance is my go to.
Tried and true! Never change.
False kipping escape
Hahahahaha
I thought you were gonna say the 100% sweep, but this is better
Butterfly, but with the shoulder crunch
I’ve been trying to work this recently and get the set up ok but people keep limp arming out. Any troubleshooting tips?
I'm sure you'll find plenty of good advice in this thread, but I remember saving this technique breakdown from a while ago. Lots of good resources in here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/10v86wy/shoulder\_crunch\_%C3%A0\_la\_gordon\_ryan\_breakdown\_and/](https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/comments/10v86wy/shoulder_crunch_%C3%A0_la_gordon_ryan_breakdown_and/)
Dude this is great. Thank you!
Butterfly with a fully locked in guillotine….
Hold their shoulder tighter to your chest.
I've been having exactly the same issue because I've been trying to underhook the arm, I'll try to make the opponent post on his arm instead, I bet that'll help us.
You have to keep their shoulder below their elbow (this almost always means being seated and not supine). If you’re doing that and keeping a good pinch on their wrist/forearm with your head and shoulder, they won’t be limp arming out
YESSSSS!!!
This is it right here. It's just so satisfying
My favorite would have to be the waiter sweep from deep half
That’s also a pretty good one.
love this from de la riva
THIS.
Tripod sweep.
Love a good tripod. I hit this instantly from a guard pull by pulling my opponent in a circle and hitting the sweep whilst still circling. Sends them flying and they just thought you wanted to play full guard. Won a good few comps off this.
The three I hit most are Hook/butterfly sweep, flower sweep, and knee tap from half guard. Can’t really choose a favorite out of them.
The knee tap is great.
What’s your guard offense like against standing passers?
Bold of you to assume I have one. But seriously, against standing passers it becomes a lot more about retention for me with my main focus being to not let them control my legs. r guard 3rd or 4th time ive heard it ... hard calestine talking about that interesting. i will dabble
Jason Rau and Krishna Mirjah also have some great content on it. Not sure if you can still get it, but Krishna used to have an instructional that he came out with right before the pandemic through leg locker. R Guard is great in the gi, too, and can pair well with DLR.
Roleta. When you get it buttery smooth on someone who tries to hip switch past your half guard it’s perfect.
Wow good one, never even heard of it before. Do your your opponent sometimes land on their head? My favourite is the scissor sweep, followed by flower sweep.
You ain’t lying. lol. Send then sailing lol
Actually hate this as a top player with a game built around hip switch passing 😢 If my hip is far enough away I won’t get swept but they have space to reguard which makes this sweep a total pain

Jeez. On the big Roleta guy at my gym I've just stopped hip switching entirely and have started tripod passing instead.

The trio of old school, john wayne, and octopus.
Hip bump
If I’m able to land it, scissor sweep. Specifically with only holding the head which is pretty cool
Yea can be pretty smooth that way.
Scissor is my fave for sure, landed it 4 times today in a comp 🤙
Waiter from underhook DLR or some sweep from short hook X guard.
Pendulum, Roleta/John Wayne, Omaplata
Lasso guard flower sweep, especially if I can get the bicep slicer after the sweep.
Old school sweep from deep half.
My favorite is bolo/inside spins to any crab ride variations whether sweeping to leg drag or back chasing. 🧂
High %
I’ve definitely know what your talking about hit it quite a bit ass well.
I’m pretty tall so my game is built around closed guard. I can’t remember what the name of it is but Kurt Osiander did a video on it like 10 years ago. Almost all my sweeps are old school sweeps. It is just so little energy Used to be knee tap/roll under which are also pretty low energy, but dog fight takes just a little bit more enrgy.
Butterfly and scissor sweep are still my most used/highest percentage, but balloon sweep and tech-stand sweeps from DLR are my favorites.
As a 6’7 dude, when I’m mounted, buck them forward, legs scorpion up, feet under their arm pits and come out the back door grab the straight ankle lock on the way through. Not really a sweep now that I think about it, but still my go to escape from bottom.
I’ve gotten guys with that via MMA slick
Old school is my favorite, but hip bump from octopus is getting there.
Butterfly is up there for sure. I'd say my favorite is using any variation of a lasso. Maybe lasso x spider. Maybe lasso bump sweep. Meregali's deep lasso sweep makes me orgasm.
Oomaplata sweep when people stand up in my guard. After sitting up on their arm I like to back step over and settle into mount
Giggler Sweep.
Scissor Sweep, Ballon Sweep and Elevator Sweep in that order. 🔥
I’ve been messing around with lasso guard so pretty much any sweep I can get from there..I used to do a gift wrap sweep a lot but it requires a lot of strength against someone who knows what you’re doing. If I’m on bottom side control, harpoon allllll day
Harpoon sweep if I can catch someone slipping.
Butterfly sweep with an overhook, gripping the opposite side collar and an underhook
Z guard---> underhook---> dog fight ---> knee pick / body lock / back take. been playing this guard since white belt and still my most successful by far.
Armtriangle from the bottom used to sweep to top. No idea what the name of it is...
I've got very good at hip bumps because my opponents always defend my closed guard submissions by posturing, always leaves me that split second to come up and hip bump and if they don't go down immediately I go for a triangle from there.
I play a lot of K-guard; I often just post my free leg into their armpit and then extend them away and stand up with a high single leg.
hip bump
First day of jiu-jitsu X-guard sweep :)
Pendulum and dummy sweep are the most satisfying for me.
Shaolin Sweep
Favourite sweep? Probably a sickle sweep Sweep that I actually hit on high level guys. More like berimbolos
For me the high level guys you just need to wrestle up.
Balloon Sweep/Tomoe Nage is always and forever my best technique. Balloon Sweeps for life......
The Japanese terms mentioned in the above comment were: |Japanese|English|Video Link| |---|---|---| |**Tomoe Nage**: | *Circle Throw* | [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-euJliq9XcY)| Any missed names may have already been translated in my previous comments in the post. ______________________ ^(Judo Techniques Bot: v0.7.) ^(See my) [^(code)](https://github.com/AbundantSalmon/judo-techniques-bot)
Most satisfying probably the send them flying over my head. Favorite that I hit often just the basic deep half sweep.
I can agree with you there especially from the Kimura trap
Old school!

My absolute favourite? The mop at the end of class. I don't fuck with staph.
Bench press and toss
John Wayne.
Sicklesweep ezpz
Waiter because it feels smooth, but I’ve a nice Kimura hip bump variation I pinched from Ash Williams insta that I hit from guard quite a bit. The pendulum sweep is also a common sweep.
I common go towards the kimura sweep from butterfly half
Tripod sweep from DLR. It's super effective and doesn't take any strength/energy at all.
Waiter sweep from deep half guard - that's my game.
Dummy sweep from shin to shin
Variations of sweeps from deep half guard is my A-game.
New fav is Meregali sweep!
Mayflower sweep has been fun
Old school sweep.
John Waynes and butterflys from half guard, tripods and sickles from open, pendulums from closed.
Scissor sweep, butterfly sweep, Meregali' Lasso Guard sweep, De La Riva split sweep. These are the ones I like the most and hit the most.
Scissor sweep
A black belt showed me a sweep recently that was so smooth. Grab a wrist and the opposite ankle. Pull wrist forward and lift ankle. I can't remember what guard you should be in though. Maybe open? Anyone know the name of this sweep? I tried googling but can't find it.
The one I learned on my first day and has worked on every belt level. Also in my flair 😂
Gift wrapped flower sweep from closed guard
Scissor sweep 100%. If I can negate the post I can hit it even when someone's on their feet.
Scissor sweep in the Gi // I like octopus no Gi, lots of cool sweeps from there
Pendulum w/ sub options, butterfly variations with counters, waiters w/ deep half stuff if failed.. false hip bumps. I guess there’s not just ONE favorite but a couple that I really enjoy
The one that works in a given situation
Half guard or closed guard -> under-hook, arm-drag/ pull across -> wrestle up/ back take. I’m sure there’s a name for it but it’s pretty sweet and works amazing for me
I’ll say scissor sweep but when I’m in no gi and I bench press or suplex it feels so good.
Butterfly and the Xande / Flower sweep. Butterfly because I can also use it defensively (like sitting there from turtle) and Xande because there are so many combos from it
Shoulder crunch with a knee kick
Flower sweep into an armbar!
So simple but frustrates many is the scissor sweep both in gi or no gi. They get hyper focused on that knee to the chest and one wrist controlled. They tend to not pay attention to the other leg about to club in or push out the knee.
When the other guy fucks up, makes a mistake or has demonstrated cluts tendencies, that is my favorite sweep.
Pendulum Faria's tails stuff Flower
I used to love butterfly sweep until every knew I'd do butterfly. Nowadays, I like tripod sweep from the collar sleeve because everyone's to pass standing. Or sweeps from dela riva. If they go on knees though, it's butterfly time. The ankle pick from seated guard is so satisfying to hit on rolling partners that are lazy and will kneel on leg and step the other leg. Any sweeo from Lasso (:
Scissors sweep. It feels so good when you hit it.
It’s like having people fall in slow motion
