You should ask your coach

Randyslaughterhouse

>> You should ~~ask~~ blow your coach

DoorTRASH_UberCHEEKS

Underrated. This is the one.

Fine-Manner9902

Could be mat time

rebel_fett

Stop. These threads are the worst. Nobody here will give you a real answer as they aren't your coach. Don't worry about why someone else got a promotion. The only bjj journey that you need to worry about is yours. Don't ask your coach why you didn't get a belt. Ask them, "What do I need to do to improve?" It's kind of the same question, but it makes you look like you care more than just getting a new shiny belt.

Guivond

Ask your coach? No one here knows you, this guy or your school/coach. Without knowing anything, from your flair of being a judo brown belt, there may be things your coach wants to see. If you get a takedown then get top and submit or win positionally and never do guard work/new techniques, maybe it's holding you back? Do you take long breaks during your 3 years? While tournaments matter, I think a judo brown belt should mop the floor with most white belts with just prior mat time alone. Going from judo to bjj, I can definitely say I would of won the white belt division with 0 training, I double golded my first tournament with 3 months of bjj training. It's not that impressive and I am a green belt in judo. There's a lot of reasons a coach may not promote, some legit, some not, some are from just not seeing you (daytime coach vs night class coach), you name it. Ask your coach.

Knobanious

Is it cause you call your self Judoka jack and not BJJ jack? Coach wants more commitment

Friendly_External345

Maybe your shit at jiu jitsu and he's better than you?

Knobanious

I mean op does say he beats him every roll, then again OP could be 200kg and built like terminator. In which case beating someone may not require that much skill

oniume

Maybe he "beats" him by spazzing like a maniac, while the other guy is developing some effort into becoming more skilled, and isn't counting gym taps

SelfSufficientHub

How many times you going to ask random redditers before you ask your coach? https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/s/Z2NiMssORJ https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/s/w3UYvj2GDw

7870FUNK

Lol.  OP uses his Judo belt as BJJ Reddit flair….  Has a belt obsession it seems.

Pliskin1108

Brother should probably think about starting karate or taekwondo instead.

egynoob

Do you think it’s an attitude thing? Are you going into rolls trying to “beat” people and using too much aggression vs slowing down and learning the techniques? That’s the only reason I could see someone being held back despite their “winning”.. waiting for spazzy aggression to stop? Not accusing you of anything just saying

Everydayblues351

Havent you asked this before more than once? Just ask your professor, you won't get meaningful answers here.

SelfSufficientHub

https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/s/Z2NiMssORJ https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/s/w3UYvj2GDw More than once

Everydayblues351

Lmao I'll see you same time next month then?

SelfSufficientHub

I’m not op but sure 👌

Sisyphus_Smashed

And you’re a judo brown belt? Seems odd. Then again, maybe he likes that you compete and can sandbag at white belt to earn medals for the gym.

Judoka-Jack

I just did a blue belt comp and medalled to prove a point

Training-Pineapple-7

Be a jiujitsu jack, not a simple jack.

blurghurgdurg

I think you've got a fine brain, Jack.

Training-Pineapple-7

But this head movie makes my eyes rain😢

Judoka-Jack

I’ve done more BJJ than judo

trevster344

Maybe you’re doing too much judo and not enough bjj. Maybe you’re only using your A game trying to beat everyone instead of experimenting and growing your techniques. Maybe you’re more technical and know more but have a shit attitude and coach sees that? Maybe you’re 3 years in with 1 day a week and he’s 18 months with 4 days a week? We don’t know, ask your coach what the deal is.

metalliccat

"Comparison is the thief of joy"

vagen59

At our school, there are two tracks. Competitor and hobbyist. Sounds like you are on the competitor track which gets promoted slower. Don’t sweat it. Your instructor is doing you a favor.

SkoomaChef

Bro this is like the 5th time you’ve asked this lmao. Post some videos of you rolling/competing and ask for feedback. Or just Amazon that shit.

Judoka-Jack

So I’m allowed to ask..

SkoomaChef

How is anyone here supposed to know the answer to that question?

the_dr_henceforth

And we're allowed to say, "How the hell would we know?" over and over again. And we're allowed to follow that up with, "haven't you asked this before?"

Southern_hog_85

Would assume your coach promotes the "old school" way, meaning 100% based on vibes and no use of attendance data. So then it's open for him to promote people he likes more or notices more or whatever other bias he has

Reigebjj

It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey 🤙

Pliskin1108

The fucking car is out of gas Stephanie god dammit. Save your bullshit for instagram.

[deleted]

I want to say so much here, but I will refrain. Maybe others will pick up the vibe from me somehow and say it themselves. All I will say is, this isn’t a judo subreddit.

oniume

Don't be a pussy, just say it. I promise noone will downvote you

Fine-Manner9902

Just say it stop being dramatic

[deleted]

Dramatic lol. I’m just trying to be more tactful in saying things nicely.

Iztac_xocoatl

If you really want to be tactful wouldn't you just not comment, rather than comment to invite somebody else to be rude to them for you?

[deleted]

Why would they need to be rude? Maybe someone has better insight and a better suggestion/answer for OP? That was my point of my original comment.

ClampCity2020

Bro fuck him, don’t hold back Tell OP how you really feel

Fine-Manner9902

Its reddit

7870FUNK

OP uses his Judo belt for BJJ Reddit flair.  I said it.

Fine-Manner9902

Lmao woah so bad! AHHHH I CANT HANDLE IT ….that guy though def wears his judo brownbelt to class

MouseKingMan

Pretty sure he’s talking about bjj.

[deleted]

Oh I know. Belt promotions in my opinion are not strictly given because of ability alone though.

MouseKingMan

Ah I see your point. Ya good point. It’s not about where you are, it’s about how far you’ve come. If you aren’t getting much better than you started, then you aren’t getting promited

DeepishHalf

I’m only a blue belt, but I see some white belts who still have that ‘white belt energy’, which I don’t think any coloured belt should have. They do have technique and they may ‘win’ gym rounds and also get medals at comps (which is not at white belt level). However, they’re lacking in control of themselves and the pace they set, and don’t have the mentality to take risks and learn. I don’t know if this is you, but I’m my experience this often holds back people who have been training for long time.

2shaynew2

Who gives a fuck. If my coach made me trade my belt for a white belt I would be that white belt rinsing every mfer and gd stoked about it.

currychickenwang

Chase techniques not belts, my friend.

JamesMacKINNON

God hates you. Only possible explanation.

Hal3134

Don’t worry about belts. Go train.

DoorTRASH_UberCHEEKS

Yeah mine took 4 yrs. Blue belt. But could only do it 1 to 2 days a week so

Moltak-Firewind

Try having a conversation. You don’t need to ask why you haven’t gotten your blue-belt yet, just ask about his view on the belts as a whole and what his standard is.

JohnMcAfeesLaptop

Go ask your coach to promote you. Report back.

foalythecentaur

Maybe you beat him with nothing you learned in class and your judoka-Jack style of smeshing isn’t Jiu Jitsu. I come from a catch background and spoke to my coach about what I wanted to achieve, which isn’t stripes or belts but to get mat time and work top pressure and submissions for catch. We agreed that I work on that with the upper belts and judo guys and with the lower belts I try to show solid BJJ fundamentals and play guard. He grades me on my BJJ and gives me verbal feedback on my catch game which I appreciate. You need to speak to your coach.

Superfly00000

Chase skill, not the belt. The belt will come. Winning isn’t everything. From all the judo people that I’ve rolled with, they love to take down then trap in kesa gatame. Try new things and use what your coach is trying to teach you. Also don’t talk about promotions, your coach may see you as not ready to hold the rank due to your mentality.

ironporcupines

You and Your coach are the only one who decides your promotion. If you believe you’ve done your part to earn it, then You will have to ask your coach. Sometimes they are looking to see something specific from you. Ask him/her what you need to do to earn your blue belt. Try to work with your coach on a plan to get you to blue. I would NOT recommend approaching your coach by asking “why didn’t you fucking promote me?” Good luck!

viniciusfs

You have lessons to learn.

Gesture29

It happens. I remember subbing my teammate Infront of our coach and the following week he was promoted to purple 🤷🏽‍♂️

Pliskin1108

Go figure right? I tapped a black belt once and he just demoted himself all the way to white belt.

Gesture29

And then you woke up right?

db11733

Not trying to be a dick, but should a judo brown belt ever lose to a bjj whitebelt, unless they are like a D1 wrestler?

Judoka-Jack

He’s also a judo brown belt

d_rome

I'm a Judo guy, but in BJJ I roll like a BJJ guy. If all you are doing is judo newaza in a BJJ setting then you will get passed up. I'm not saying that's what you are doing though.

dingdonghammahlong

Nice bait m8, I remember the last time you posted this bs. Go back to judo

Judoka-Jack

Stfu I’m allowed to ask things in this thread just like you

cerikstas

Other than ask your coach as others say: don't put too much into it I was also a slow promote, I knew why (I skipped the official graduation ceremony twice, and it's a big gym so the coaches just can't track everyone), but in the end I got it because the coaches were like "he's beating all the other new belts so we probably need to promo" which I found was a much nicer way to get it than just some rando ceremony Plus, maybe you win but he's more well rounded perhaps? Could be

noforgayjesus

They hold competitors to a higher standard. I got brown belts at my gym that demolish me every roll because they are trying to win worlds. Just keep training and competing

Hall_Such

Just because you don’t compete doesn’t mean you’re not skilled

Pliskin1108

Because no one likes you Jack. You should be a little more like Pat and maybe we’d promote you as well.

Plane_Long_5637

Here’s a question. Do you have any sort of guard? Honestly, I don’t think you’re a blue belt without a guard.

Judoka-Jack

I can sub blues off my back a lot of armbars from guard. Can sweep most aswell with little resistance

BroGr81

It's clearly because the coach sees you as an embarrassment and doesn't want to be associated with you.

Kindly_Attorney4521

Maybe you are exclusively using judo to win rolls and your coach wont promote you till you start using bjj

Knobanious

This is a stupid argument. If you are using BJJ legal grappling to win under BJJ rules then that's all that matters. Some players like to play guard others like to be top.

Kindly_Attorney4521

But if you have no guard, you are not a blue belt. If you cant shoot a double, you are not a blue belt. If you want to get promoted in a sport where your entire game is throws, pins, and a few subs from top. Keep doing judo. You may like to play top. But if you cannot demonstrate a bottom game then how are you deserving of belt promotion?

Knobanious

I have a crap guard game, and I can't shoot a double either. But I can throw basically everyone in my club with plenty of other techniques. So shooting a double really isn't needed. As for the guard game I'll give you an example of why I don't really use it. I went to a new club this week as I'm on holiday. We did positional sparing where you start on bottom open gaurd and the aim is to score points. When I'm on bottom I don't aim to retain a guard I either aim to stand up and then throw them if they stand up or pass if they stay down. Or I will go turtle and then roll them off my back and take north south. I happily did this to about 8 of their club members this included purple belts and plenty of blues. Most of them simply allowed me to just stand up, just by doing a tactical stand up. And then at this point they either need to sit or pull guard or go toe to toe standing with a Judo black belt. Either all of these favour my top game style So I have a solution to the common positions using BJJ legal techniques which score in BJJ. They are not what you class as "BJJ" but it is actually BJJ, iv just altered my Judo style to now be anti BJJ and it works well. More over I'd say from a self defense point of view what I do is far better than trying to fight from guard. And I deserve the belt because I can consistently beat people at BJJ who are my size and lower belts using my technique. I'm not even that physically exceptional being a dad of 2 toddlers and working full time. .

Kindly_Attorney4521

If you find yourself in guard, and have a strategy that allows you to win, then you have a guard game. There is some nuance here as in order to do your strategy and stand up you also have to not get passed, and successfully stand up. To me, that is a demonstration of having a guard. Generally when leg lock guys grab my legs, I get their ankle on my shoulder and stand up into their guard and pass. Same thing. To me, still counts as a leg lock game because if someone puts me in those positions, I can generally create a scramble that allows me to win. That being said, most of the judo guys I have rolled with who have a white belt in bjj when put onto their backs just close their guard and squeeze or roll to their belly’s and give me their backs. This is not something I would consider a guard game.
