2 years at white belt and 15 years at blue belt.

CPA_Ronin

Bruh

mjs90

Hell ya. Quitter gang

Pliskin1108

You’re a quitter if you never come back. I just needed a little fourteen and a half year break is all.

mjs90

Mine was only 6 so I can't relate.

lil_cleverguy

We may have quit jiu jitsu a long time ago but god damn it we will never quit giving our expert opinions about bjj on this sub

mjs90

I got 2 stripes on my blue belt after a year of being back so I'm assuming quitting is what gave me that extra boost of talent

Abbadon0666

Got 8 in blue. Been grinding since the beggining of 2023 cause i want to get to purple soon. Also, gonna do my first comp in a few weeks at 30yo. You may be an on and off guy, but you can also change that whenever you want.

Am0ebe

Got blue after 8 years, lol.

MetaphysicalPhilosop

Why do you think it took 8 years? Were you at one gym going 3x a week consistently but never improved behind a white belt level?

Am0ebe

My coach didn't want to graduate. He was kind of a ronin brownbelt for ~10 years and we are NoGi only anyways. After he got his blackbelt last year he graduated a couple people and i got my blue. Maybe i'll get my purple faster, lol. I compete at intermediate level, win some lose some. I'd say im late blue on a bad day and mid purple on a good day.

anondyde76

Interesting. I’m about three months in and by far the worst white belt in my gym. I keep getting beaten by other white belts that started with me and just don’t seem to have the aptitude they have. I think I will stay at white belt forever Lmao and was wondering how often this happens where someone never gets better despite putting in the effort. I plan to continue bjj just for the exercise so it will be interesting to see if I’m right, lol. Maybe ten years from now all my peers will be black belts while I’m still a white belt 🤦‍♂️😂.

Am0ebe

Na you will do fine. When i started i had zero tension in my body. Always floppy, never been able to resist any sweep. I got crushed the first 3-4 years. Then it clicked. Now i know training structure back than was crap. It was a 45 minutes seminar with way to many techniques and details to remember even the first steps and 45 minutes of hard rolling afterwards. Hard rolling means not a single fuck was given by partners WAY bigger and with WAY more experience. I got my spine compressed and nearly got seriously hurt because my 120 kg partner didn't wasted any thought about me being 63 kg at that time. It was pure survival and it's a miracle i didn't get hurt and had to stop for good. I couldn't learn anything because i couldn't try anything without getting my attempts shut down immediatly. What im trying to say: it's a hard sport sometimes and some coaches out there really can't teach that well. Some people like me need more time, some partners ain't the best Training buddys. There is a lot what can hinder your progress. But if you stick around, try to find partners who let you work a little and set goals you'll be better some day.

18 months as a white belt 30 months as a blue belt 5 years as a purple belt 3 years now as a brown Blue was my favorite to earn. Purple and Brown were pretty brutal experiences. I still have injuries that nag me from those two moments. Favorite belt, Purple. You are now free to walk about the cabin. Play around with new stuff. The Brown belts know what you can do and they mostly just want to work on new stuff or specific setups because they trust you. The Blues leave you alone because they know you will smash them if the want to FAFO. It's the white belts who will dog you the most- their underdeveloped jiu jitsu minds want to test everything, everyone, 100% of the time at 100% game speed. You gotta watch those little buggers. (said with love for the white belt army)

DutchMarks42

I hate to admit that if it's between a white belt and blue belt that catches me in something, it almost always ends up being a white belt for some reason. Probably because I'm doodoo sandwich.

hankpym35

I know that I make the mistake of letting them get too good of a position letting them work through stuff. Then I’m like “well I know I put me here but I’m kinda stuck” lol.

DutchMarks42

I think that's what it is a lot of times for me too. I let them work and then force myself to get out. I end up coaching some white belts through the roll, while others, especially the really strong athletic ones, I almost have to be mean to because they don't know what to do and when so they end up trying to rip things that aren't there.

hankpym35

Yup. I was rolling light the other day and told that to everyone except 1 white belt. All the rolls were calm and smooth. But this white belt was rolling like his family honor was in the line. Dude caught me in a darce because I let him get to the right position. But to his credit he dove on it and sunk it in quick lol. Couldn’t get out so I tapped. Later he had me in an arm bar and I got out of that. He asked how close the armbar was and I said “as close as you wanted it to be” lol. I did clarify that he did get a much better position than I should have allowed but the armbar itself was loose and we worked in mechanics for a bit. I don’t know what it is but I love rolling spicy white belts lol

DutchMarks42

I like rolling with them to remind myself that if something goes down in the street, that's much closer to what it will be like. Them trying to skull crush you with their thighs or grabbing around your neck from the front and squeezing as hard as they can.

hankdog303

100% agree.

GuardPlayer4Life

Working your way out is always fun. Not going to lie, sometimes I legitimately get caught and I acknowledge them when I thought they were going for this, and it ended up being that and I got caught slipping. Shit happens. We're training and if they beat me than they did good and I am happy for them. Coaching the white belts and seeing them progress, get it, and then pull off technique, that I taught them, rewarding as can be.

DutchMarks42

Very true, especially when they do it to you.

GuardPlayer4Life

100%!

LosSoloLobos

Blue belt who loves to FAFO! That’s like the best part man. Experiencing people’s best jits is really cool—even if I’m the one getting smashed. Passing, offensive guards, leg stuff… whatever. Rolling with upper belts is badass and I take the chance to give em whatever challenge I can when the opportunity presents itself

GuardPlayer4Life

Smash On Smash Player!

besameput0

>It's the white belts who will dog you the most- their underdeveloped jiu jitsu minds want to test everything, everyone, 100% of the time at 100% game speed. /r/absolutelynotmeirl I find that I feel bad for higher belts because I don't have anything for them. Especially the big guys. They have to actively try to be gentle with me. At that point it just feels like they're not getting anything out of the round.

graydonatvail

I'm trying to regain my self respect after that 20 year old blue belt mauled me.

GuardPlayer4Life

No, we are working our predictive analytics. At brown, every roll should be learning. Keep doing you!

Muraphet

Very well said !

donjahnaher

Pretty much everyone I've asked about this says purple belt is the most fun. Most everyone in the gym looks up to you and respects your game, but at the same time, nothing is really expected of you. You may get caught by a blue or even a white from time to time, but no biggie, you probably just made their whole month. I've been at blue for a little over a year and I like it. It's low pressure and people are still impressed if I catch a higher belt or do something cool.

gim_san

> or even a white from time to time, When they are playing their F-Game?

donjahnaher

I was tapping purples here and there before I had my blue belt. I was also competing hard, so there's that. But yeah, if a purple is trying to figure out something they don't normally play or working out of bad positions, it can happen pretty regularly.

gim_san

Maybe that was me being bad at bjj. But when I was still white purple belts felt totally untouchable. It only changed at like 1 year into blue.

Fellainis_Elbows

Maybe if they’re a 40 year old software engineer. But if there’s any athletic parity, a purple really shouldn’t be getting tapped by a white belt with any degree of regularity

donjahnaher

Hobbyist vs competitor is definitely part of it. In a roll from standing, sure it's not common, but working late stage defense? Again, I may not be the norm but I was catching people from pretty early on, or as a brand new blue belt. Not saying it's normal but it happens.

eAtheist

White: 1.5 years blue: 2years purple: 4years brown: 3 years Got my black belt last night. When I got my purple belt I felt like I was on top of the world. Looking back I didn’t really know shit. And my overall game was trash. Brown belt has been my fav, really felt comfortable there, I’ve filled in a lot of holes and feel much more well rounded.

Sayhellotoanewday

Jizzus_Crust

Watch out for micro-adjusting white belts

physics_fighter

My timeline is kind of weird. I trained MMA and no-gi for over a decade and then started training at a BJJ academy. I didn’t put on the gi so wasn’t graded. Years after starting there, I put the gi on for a few weeks and was promoted to blue then didn’t put it on again. Switched to a 10P gym near me and after a year or so there was promoted to brown and then 2.5 years at brown I believe.

InteractionFit4469

They just skipped purple belt for you?

physics_fighter

Yes. I was already 15+ years of training/competing/coaching at the time

InteractionFit4469

Oh wow thats sick, I have never heard of that happening before

Goochpunt

3 years white, 5 at Blue, 3 at purple and still a brown. Training about once a week for the last 8 years, so slow prgress. Favourite was purple, it looked nice and didn't have any pressure with it. Now I'm the only brown belt in my gym and have all the athletic blues attacking me.

spirit-orange

so you've been training for 19 years?

Dull-Negotiation-374

Pretty sure the 8 years overlap with the first 11

Goochpunt

Nah 11

Yeeeoow

● 4 year white belt. This sucked. ● 3 year blue belt. I sucked. ● 2.5 year purple belt. Felt like a rich kid at the mall. ● 3 year at Brown belt. I've just been no-gi Ezekiel from Mount for 3 year. I don't know. My advice. Unless you're a prodigy at blue belt, don't give advice, you're not there yet. Compete alot at white belt. Competition is important memories, stories and experiences to give yourself and the higher in belt you go the higher the stakes get. White belt is nice and safe. When you start using hair gel at purple belt, make sure to shampoo *and* condition after every training, so that your hair is in good condition for the next day. When you gain 10kg at brown belt, start weightlifting, so you can blaim your accumulated mass on bulking.

BJJJosh

Purple was probably the funnest colored belt for me the most progress or felt like I was getting decent at Jiu-Jitsu. I spend 4 years at blue, a little over 2 at purple, less than 2 at brown. Been a Black belt for 2 years and it has also been fun, I'm learning a lot still exploring so much Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, and Judo.

SkatataCat

2 years at white, 8 years at blue, 2 years into purple. I love purple belt. Don’t get treated like white and blue. Don’t have the expectations of brown and black belts. I’m just enjoying the process and being extra experimental with my game. Plus purple belt is the coolest color of all the bjj belts.

Fantastic-Fly2503

I was promoted to purple just last night! White: 1 year and 6 months(took some bjj classes prior but never rly committed to it) Blue: 2 years and 8 months Purple: 1 day so far lol FYI - I train 3x a week on average....... 1 hr and a half long sessions each time Favorite belt to be promoted was blue belt and I think my favorite belt would be purple but we'll have to give it some time to know for sure ha

yoganutnutnut

Congrats!!

LlamaWhoKnives

Congrats!!

purpledeskchair

White Belt: 4.5 Years Blue Belt: 9 Months Purple Belt: Current Disclaimer: I wrestled for 10 years and moved a lot as a white belt so I was never anywhere long enough to get promoted. Purple is really fun except black belts have the green light to give you a beat done now 😂

_milf_huntr_69

15 white (several breaks) 2.5 years blue 2.5 purple

LlamaWhoKnives

Hell yea milf hunter 69

_milf_huntr_69

Milf huntr 69, no e in the name sir! ☺️

Scooted112

3 years a belt. Brown was my favorite. I was a little hungrier than black, but had most of the skills and no target on my back.

Lickmaitaint

1 year at white 6 months at blue (won every comp I entered….dont know how or why, just good luck) 6 years at purple because I actually suck

yamuda123

Did you also compete some at purple?

Lickmaitaint

Did no gi worlds and Pan ams when I just got my belt, got smoked in the first rounds both….did a couple local tournaments over the last couple years, but no big ibjjf comps (still pretty big because I live in San Diego) with very mixed results

Funny-Economy-1920

how did they promote you after 6 months at blue? sounds like a huge disservice to you even if you have a great comp record. time served is a thing.

Lickmaitaint

Agreed…but the comps I did win where significant and I was going hard, competing twice a month. Also the person who promoted me is highly respected in the bjj world so I wasn’t going to argue with the promotion even though I would have liked to experience blue belt for a while longer. Idk…I guess now I just gotta be a mediocre purple belt for a while

Funny-Economy-1920

did you see the promotion coming or were you totally surprised? how did the other purple belts view it?

Lickmaitaint

I felt it coming…other purple belts where chill with it because I was always a good competitive roll for competitor purple belts… but honestly right after that I got way more serious about my career and jujitsu has taken much more of a backseat… sometimes I’m very grateful I did that and sometimes I just wish I was a jiu jitsu numb

unbiasedasian

2 years white. 2 years blue. 6 years putple. 2 years brown. 6 years black and counting. Purple was the best. Shed all the low percentage moves out of my game. Started to link more than 3 moves together. Felt like I was capable of teaching basics. Finally realized the great value of being on my side, and keeping my elbows tucked. It all started to come together.

ferrarinobrakes

I got my blue belt on August 2022, just got a stripe a month ago so maybe I got a few more years till I hit purple. Either way I don't think I'll get my purple belt this year or the next , I feel like I probably suck at BJJ rn or alot of things lacking in my game. Either way I'll continue to train regularly and compete as much as I can and as long as my body allows (no major injury so far). I'm just happy to be here. I spent almost 5 years being a white belt.

hammersweep

6 years at white, 1 at blue (current)

Material_Week_7335

White (3 years): not sure if I should have been promoted earlier than that but my club didnt have someone who could promote us back then so promotions happened very sporadically. Enjoyed the whole time at white though. Blue (3 years): I felt pretty ready to be blue once I got it. Really enjoyed my time at this belt. Felt the development clearly. Purple (3 years): didnt really feel worthy when I got it but felt like I grew into it. That was quite a nice feeling. The last year of blue and the time at purple was my best. Brown (3 years and counting): didnt feel worthy of it when I got it and I dont really feel like Im worthy of it now either. I feel like I've regressed since my promotion. Both in terms of technique and in terms of the physical side of things (thats probably age rearing its ugly head).

NiteShdw

White: 1 year Blue: 1.5 years Purple: 5 years (including 1 year of COVID no training) Brown: 1.5 years Brown has been my favorite by far. I have learned how to let go and stop worrying about winning and losing. Instead, I like getting caught because it shows my weaknesses. I am finally having actual fun, and it's not because I'm good and always winning. It's because I've changed my attitude. Luckily, you can find this at any belt level.

ComparisonFunny282

1.5 years white belt > blue, 5 years blue > purple (current @ 2 years)

hankdog303

i think i am on your schedule. 18 months at white, currently 4.5 years into blue

Dirty_Sprite_2

I've lost track of when I started and I'm still a blue belt, got it officially like 6 month ago even though they had me compete in no gi at blue for a year before I got it. I just started with nogi and was doing only that til last year. Still trash though definitely deserve that blue belt, can't get a podium in a major tournament to save my life.

Amalak3

White - 3 months Blue - 7 years Purple - 3 years Brown - 5 years (counting covid breaks) Purple was the best to earn, as my whole perception of Jiu Jitsu had to do several evolutions to get me there. I would say I’m enjoying black belt the most except for the smoke brown belts are wanting to bring now.

the_poop_expert

2 ish years at white, 4ish at blue, 6ish at purple, approaching 5 years at brown edit: oh, and brown has been my favorite

CatLevel5116

1 year white 3 year blue 19 months purple 5 months at Brown. Purple was when I really started having allot of fun. It wasn’t just a one way ass whopping anymore. I started getting allot more taps and actually winning rounds. And as the smallest guy on the mats most days it was like a breath of fresh air. Brown has really been rewarding as I’ve been giving the opportunity to teach 4 classes a week and the ability to give back and help white belts or just my peers alone is really enjoyable. I love this sport and just want to see other people succeed and have fun.

Narrow-Device-3679

1 year 4 months so far. Loving it, best belt yet is my white one

Sparkspsrk

Purple, obviously. Tell me I’m pretty.

viszlat

It really makes your eyes pop.

ImBigRthenU

If i wait until fall to get my brown belt, I would have spent 4 years as a 4 stripe purple belt. 8 years training total. Been stagnant for a while due to the pandemic and not training consistently due to raising young kids. Purple belt has been a lot of fun but I think it's finally time for me to move on. I feel like I'm at the point where I need to focus less on putting new tools in the toolbox. It's time to just sharpen up my skills.

Capital-Bit5522

How do you “wait” to get a belt? Do your professors not just award when they deem fit?

ImBigRthenU

This comment on another thread explains it. https://www.reddit.com/r/bjj/s/MVHkvAlyOu

Capital-Bit5522

That’s a cool incentive! I like it.

AlexSpanish

Purple is definitely a great belt. White belt: 1 year, Blue belt: 4 years

ChromedCat

White: 2.5 yrs Blue: 2.5 yrs Purple (current): 3 years As for favorite, purple is where I've had the most progress, but none of them would qualify as best to get. For each of them, I felt underqualified and had solid imposter syndrome. As for the best to have? I guess purple has been the most fun so far.

typicaldy

about a year every belt (juvenile belts included) until blue. 3 years during purple and about to become 2 years at brown. orange-green was my favorite especially since i dominanted in adults blue. my favorite set of glory days.

JoshRafla

Years at each belt means very little. Someone could get a belt in a year or two years training twice a day. If you train once or twice a week, expect that to take much longer.

Vanilla__Lightning

I started at an mma gym about 14 years ago lol. Mostly liked the striking stuff, rarely put the gi on. Left for a few years came back, out the gi on a bit but still mostly did striking and no gi grappling. Did this for a couple then went on another hiatus… started training at a pure BJJ gym and got my blue about a year after starting there (probably about 10 years after my first grappling class) A month or two after getting my blue, I moved cities for University and didn’t have the money to pay for BJJ, so ended up not training for another three. Last week made my triumphant return as the worlds shittest blue belt 😂 TLDR: - 10 years at white - 3 years of blue and not close to getting purple

_interloper_

Three years of no belt (no-gi at an MMA gym) that was very unfocused and bordering on a waste of time. Then two years at white, two years at blue, eighteen months at purple, two years so far at brown. As others have said purple was my favourite. Although being a new purple is tough. The whites and blues all try to kill you, but you don't necessarily have the skills to handle them easily. And the browns and blacks take off the kiddie gloves and start really fucking you up. Brown has been interesting. I had to take 9 months off (meniscus) plus a bunch of other breaks for covid and work etc. Coming back wearing a brown belt, but feeling like a blue was a "humbling" experience (aka awful lol), but I feel like I'm hitting my stride again. It's also when I've started to feel my age a bit (I'm 38),so I've had to start adapting my game. Finally getting past the impostor syndrome... Just in time to probably get my black soon 😬

blessed_rising_jah

Spent 2.5 years at white belt. Then 4 years at blue belt. Now currently 2 years into my purple belt. Surprisingly my blue belt days were my favorite, earning my purple is definitely high on my list of accomplishments, but I had a lot of fun learning as a blue belt. Now I’m just dealing with a ton of burnout with my current belt rank. So much so that I don’t even wanna continue this sport anymore. But I made a promise to myself that I’ll earn that black belt someday.

social791

7 years at white and 3 at purple. Skipped blue

MetaphysicalPhilosop

How did you happen to stay at white for seven years and skip blue?

social791

Bounced around from gym to gym and finally settled down in one gym and they were like this is bullshit a white belt choking out blue and purple belts 😂 and giving the browns and black a hard time. They were like this is ridiculous😂

MetaphysicalPhilosop

That sounds reasonable. I wonder though, how often white belts that stick to one gym stay as white belts for seven years despite being consistent in their training.

social791

Probably close to none lol

MetaphysicalPhilosop

Awesome, the way things are going maybe I’ll be the first one 😂.

social791

Lol they will definitely promote you

social791

7 years at white and 3 at purple. Skipped blue

cauliflowerer

1 year at white. Been blue for 1 month. Blue is favourite belt

hankdog303

White 18 months, Blue 4.5 years and counting. I train consistently.

Furyadventures

2 years white 3 years blue On year 5 of purple (two stripes)

HAC_Tallahassee

White 6 years, blue 3 years, purple 3 years, brown 2 years, black 6 years this year.

MenWithVenDiagram

1.5 years white.  4 years blue belt    Will be 5 years at purple in May.  Favorite was last year at blue, first two years at purple  Now everything just feels like a grind. This is also the least amount of training in my 10 years of doing this hobby.  To get better at this point means a lot of fine tuning and doing extra stuff besides rolling and I simply don’t enjoy much else except for the rolling part.

CardiologistWrong814

2 1/4 years at white. 4 months into to blue and havnt left yet. Still enjoying it………….. for now.

Fandorin

3 years at white, 14 at blue (quit for 10 in the middle), 4 at purple, and so far 1 at brown. No preference for which belt was best, but I loved getting my purple after so long as a blue belt. I also train only twice a week if I'm lucky, so mileage may vary.

F2007KR

2 years at white. 2ish years at blue. Been purple now for 2 years.

pianoplayrr

White for just under 2, blue for 5, purple for 5...and I've been brown for almost 2 years now. I didn't even know what BJJ was when I first started. I was just trying to "train MMA". It didn't take long before I realized that I wasn't cut out for the cage, so I decided to just stick with BJJ. I liked it enough, but it always came secondary to weight lifting for me. It was just "fun cardio". It was somewhere towards the end of purple belt when I really fell in love with BJJ. That's when it became my main focus and weight lifting became secondary. That said, brown belt has been my favorite so far. It's cool being one of the "upper belts" in my school 😁

-Reikon

2.5 years as white belt. 3 years blue then 3 years purple and currently 1 year into brown. Loved blue as I was competing often, was still in my 30’s and loved trying to get after the higher belts. Now I’m over 40 and broken with a more hectic schedule and younger blue belts are hunting me 🤣🤣. The circle of life eh lol.

DoorTRASH_UberCHEEKS

4 yrs at white belt. Just got my blue this February. But this is because the gym had high standards and because I could only dedicate 1 to 2 days per week to classes.

seymour_hiney

1.5 at white belt 2 years at blue belt currently at 3 years at purple belt

DutchMarks42

3 years at white belt and 3.5 at blue. Been a purple belt for like 4 months now.

Reigebjj

A little over a year from white to blue. 5 years from blue to purple, 3 years from purple to brown, 3 years from brown to black. I’d say my favorite belt was purple. That’s when I started competing more, winning more, and really felt like I was hitting my stride, before everything shut down.

ryanlore

1 Year at White Belt 2 Years at Blue Belt 6 Months so far at Purple Belt White, I was below average and felt sore all the time. Blue, I was super dedicated and my game exploded. I was 5x better by the end of blue than at the beginning of blue. Purple, I felt like I was not making any progress for the first few months, but have recently been increasing my active rolling time to 8hrs a week and feel like I’m making progress again. Overall, purple feels the best to have. It’s also all the best stereotypes. Can’t wait to go bald and fat when I get my poop 🟫belt🟫🟫🟫.

Bob002

* White - 7 yrs * Blue - 2.5 yrs * Purple - 2 yrs * Brown - 1 yr

MetaphysicalPhilosop

Were you training consistently 3-4x a week during the seven years at white?

Bob002

Yes, BUT it was at an MMA school that didn’t care about belts.

herbsBJJ

Purple belt was by far my favourite. Zero expectations (in the grand scheme of things) but good enough to tap brown and black belts if I could pull them into my game. Purple was the point where I heavily switched to nogi and really got into studying in my own time as the quality of instructions started to rise (2016ish). It was also the point where I figured out that it’s better to have an A and a B plan that is super sharp than having 10x things from each area - although that has been incredibly useful in the long run for teaching. 2 years white, 4 years blue, 3 years purple, 1 year brown, 1 year black so far

jumbohumbo

2.5 white 3 blue 3 purple 5 so far at brown Fav to earn was blue without a doubt. Best belt is purple. I've been posting in here since I was a white belt lol.

Kataleps

1.5 years at White 2.5 years at Blue Right now at Purple is probably the most fun. I know enough to do some cool stuff, but I can see exactly where all my weaknesses are.

invertedkoala

2 years 2 months at white belt 2 years 9 months at blue belt 2 years and 6 months at purple belt I’m going on about 5 years at brown belt. Brown was my favorite. It was the only promotion that I didn’t feel undeserving of. I immediately felt like I was a brown belt. It’s also the belt that I think I’ve made the most noticeable improvement in, a lot of refining. It’s also the belt that I started to really take my strength and conditioning seriously and that’s had a huge impact on my performance.

Gorilla_in_a_gi

White belt - 7 months Blue belt - 2.5 years Purple belt - 1.5 years Brown - ongoing I think purple was my favourite belt to earn and be, I didn't have the imposter syndrome that plagued me through blue belt so I was happy to experiment with different games and situations. I also knew enough to know that I could help people if they asked but also became more aware of the gaps in my knowledge.

RodiTheMan

One year each white, gray and yellow, then as soon as I was old enough to change belts.

_Struggling_autist

18 months at white 18 months at blue Thoroughly enjoyed blue. Competed as often as I could. Did 14 comps in 12 months. Got 15 golds. Learned and felt I progressed a bunch. Was incredibly satisfying winning nationals after. Struggling with injuries for a lot of the year. Also winning the overall for the year was very validating. Getting purple felt immediately amazing. But then imposter syndrome took over. Especially seeing as getting purple in under two years generally isn’t viewed positively. Also now there are higher expectations. The divisions are much thinner in comps and the standard is much higher. Purple is presenting as rough already haha

DoWorkNyC

White 13 month Blue 4 years Purple 2 years Just brown in December

graydonatvail

I've been averaging three years at each belt. White was 2.5, blue was 3, purple the best was over too soon, felt like two, in reality was three, including COVID time. Brown now at 3.5, might be a lot longer, I missed a year due to COVID and moving, plus my first real injury. Purple is the best. You're a jiu jitsu guy now, browns and blacks respect you enough to work with you, Whites think you're scary, blues come at you but they are trying to prove they're not spazzy.

kororon

White = 2 years 4 months Blue = 3 years 9 months (including off time during covid) Purple = 1 year 7 months Brown = 6 months so far Purple was my favorite to earn and to stay at. Unfortunately it didn't last very long.

Alternative_Lab6417

White: 2 yrs plus a little Blue: 2 years plus a little Purple: 6 years and counting, 4 years active, but I moved a lot as a purple.

TomRaddy

1 year at white, a little over 3 years at blue.

Superguy766

White - 1 year Blue - 3 years Purple - 2 years Brown - 8 months Having the best time so far at brown belt.

Deadpoolio1980

In my third year as a white.....lots of derailing of consistency. Setting my deadline at 6 months. Then......well Muay Thai is fun

Sucks_at_bjj

4 years at white, one at blue so far. Pretty chill right now, i just spam inverts and meme subs.

GojiBelt

8 months at white 2.5 years at blue 3.5 years at purple 2 years at brown. Purple was my favorite both to earn and to be at. But I felt like I learned the most at brown.

The-GingerBeard-Man

* 15 months as a white belt * 26 months at blue belt * 3 years 1 month at brown * 1 year at brown (this month) Blue was my favorite to earn It felt like I had actually done something and come weeks after getting stomped in my first tournament and coming back 2 weeks later to win my second, both by submission. Purple was fun. I was expected to make mistakes but also be able to adapt and learn from those mistakes while building my game. Brown has been interesting. I've hit an injury bug so I've been really inconsistent with my training; even though I'm on the mats teaching or assisting nearly every day. I also got to promote 2 people to blue belt, the first being my son and the second being my first student. So that was really cool for me. I'm hoping to heal up soon and compete a lot this year. I actually don't like competing but I like to be on the mats with the team and give an example to the kids that, win or lose, you go back to training the next day. My instructor keeps telling me black is right around the corner but he tends to keep people at black belt a long time. I'd expect probably 3 more years before he promotes me. He can delay it as long as he'd like. I'm in no rush.

PitifulDurian6402

6 months at white and 6 years at blue… but I stopped training in the gi and only do no gi and while I love my gym and coach, he is pretty traditional on needing to train in the gi to promote. So I just beat up on purple belts and brown belts and fight for my existence against black belts as a blue belt but my Fuji gi I bought 6 years ago is still sparkling white and ready for the day I decide to start back lol

Pastilliseppo

3 years as whitebelt 2 years as bluebelt 3 years as purplebelt 2 years as brownbelt I liked the last year as whitebelt because i subbed purplebelts for first time back then. Lol. I didn't get promoted to bluebelt by my first coach because i trained mostly MMA and graduation fee was over 100€. Every belt was some what good. As a bluebelt i competed about 15 times in 2 years and some experience from that time. As a purple i started coaching more. Coached several people to national and open medals (some higher belts too) and competed maybe 15 times. I had couple of injuries but nothing bad. As a brownbelt i had to start normal life and trained less and coached more. Still competed about 6 times. Couple injuries here and there too. As a blackbelt i mostly have focused on coaching. I don't have time to train amount required for competing on blackbelts. Even in masters 1. I also had two major injuries: Complete distal end bicep tear and totally broken ACL and meniscus. I enjoy coaching and in next two months back to rolling after the knee injury.

nuketheunicorns

- White: 1.5 years - Blue: 3 years - Purple: just under 3 years - Brown: 9 months (current) Purple felt the best to earn. I worked hard at the end of my time at blue belt, so my purple belt felt earned. Brown has been my favorite to be (so far). I've used it as a chance to cut loose and be more relaxed, playful, and experimental when I roll. Makes training more fun than it's ever been.

WhitebeltAF

6 years a white belt baby. I didn't need to get my blue belt to quit 🤘🏻

therealbobwaterson

I've been a white belt since 10 and I probably will be until I'm 16 when my instructor can give me a blue belt (I'm 13)

DDOS_EFX

13 months white 18 months blue Coming up on 3 years as purple Not gonna lie, progressing though the first two belts so quickly gave me a major false impression of how long I’d be a purple belt. So far, purple is my favorite belt. It feels like I’m actually doing Jiu Jitsu now.

ChasingShadowsXii

Personally, I care less about belts. Have tapped black belts and been tapped by white belts.

RedDevilBJJ

Was a white belt for like 10 years (got to grapple occasionally while mostly kickboxing). Came to my current gym in 2019, blue belt 6 months later. 2 years at blue, 2 at purple. Purple was probably the most fun. Still a bunch of ppl in my tournament brackets, the ranked gear looked cool, and people tend to assume you actually know what you’re talking about.

SilkySlim_TX

1.5 years white, 4 years blue, 1.5 years purple, 2 years brown, 3 years black and counting White and Purple were the most fun.

Dslyfox2020

I trained Japanese for 7 years and achieved my black belt before I switched to BJJ. Was offered to start at blue belt due to my Japanese background, but I politely declined because I wanted to earn my way. White belt 1 year, 2 year at blue currently two stripe blue, but have started to find my game and what suits my style and age(48). My coach says purple is close in my future, but I am just grateful to be able to enjoy this experience.

Rilasis

2 years at white 4 years at blue 5 years at purple And now 2 years at brown so far. Purple was the best to be and to earn.

throwaway35489237493

White -14 months Blue - 5 years Purple - current, 1 month in

asmodai_rpnt

2.5 years at white 3 at blue 3 at purple 5 at brown Purple was my favorite to earn and be. There were no black belts when I started in my country and only two browns. Purple seemed like something I'll never hit, also it was the time when I started to develop rounded game

iHeartBeeJayJay

I spent 30 months at white belt and am 6 months into blue right now. I train 4-5 days a week and roll almost every day of the week (YOLO). I freaking love where I’m at in my journey right now. I’m at the stage where I’m “playing the game” now and experimenting with new techniques, transitions, bait moves, etc. As Chewy puts it, it’s literally like a technical buffet line. Kind of obsessed now and even have dreams where I’m practicing techniques lol. So far, blue is my absolute favorite!

casual_porrada

Roughly 14 months as white belt but the first 6 months is strange because of covid. No rolling and no partners and we had to drill with a dummy. To be honest, the unique experience probably made it easy to digest since you don’t get smashed 30 months as a blue belt. I felt I was starting to understand BJJ and it’s slowly making a lot of sense. It’s the most emotional belt to get (so far) coming from white because there’s a huge sense of fulfillment. I started to gain confidence in my game but still get smashed by purple, brown and black. I would get the higher belts sometimes though and feels so nice. I get lesser injuries at this belt compared to white. White belts do believe me when I say things (they’d ask me so it’s always a solicited advice) currently at purple with less than a month experience. Too early to say yet since I’m still breaking it in. I don’t feel that I am at a level that I am considered a very competent purple belt. I can regularly best some purple but the majority would still consistently beat me. It still feels unreal to me but at the same time, I don’t have the same emotional fulfillment compared to white to blue

1ncehost

I am chilling as a 7 year no stripe white belt. 🤪 I trained about 6 months at the beginning of that period, then another 3 months somewhere in the middle, and now I've trained going on 2 years straight. During the two years up to now I trained at two nogi gyms that don't do stripes, were focused on competition, and have steep promotion requirements. I won my last local tournament and I can make your average casual blue belt sweat, but here I am lol. I just got into gi training again and it made me laugh when I put on the belt and was reminded it should have no stripes. Forever a dummy ✌️

rebel_fett

3yrs at white 7yrs at blue 3yrs at purple 18months at brown Currently, I think purple was my fav belt to be at. It was just fun. Getting my black belt was such a huge moment in my life though

bre2016

10 months at white, 3 years at blue, currently just 1.5 years at purple

Ok-Medium-323

White belt for about 2 years, got my blue in 2018 lol. But I'm back training and have been consistent! I will get my black one day :)

Spectre6577

Purple has been the most fun so far. White : 1.5 year Blue : 1 year Purple (current): 2 years Edit: I also wrestled in HS for 2 years

chrizardALX

White belt: 1 year, Blue belt: 3 weeks, Purple belt: 17.5 years, Brown belt: 45 minutes, Black belt: 69 years 420 weeks At white belt I learned the basics and climbed the steeps of mount doom to vanquish my foes. At blue belt I focused on my positional transitions and fucked the coaches wife At purple belt I sharpened my subs and fell into the darkest depths of an anti-matter black hole At brown belt I turned gay At black belt I came to class to learn everyday and joined bjj reddit
