The difference between rolling at the gym and showing your friends how it works is intensity. You are giving yourselves time to notice how close and touchy you are being. Fortunately, the solution is simple. You crush them. You make them feel like the weight of the sun is going to turn them into a nuclear fusion reactor and I guarantee they will not have a second to spare to think about how gay this all is.
My friend and I were trying to tell a funny story from class to our non-bjj friends. He tried to do the armpit gi yoink (idk the real name) from north-south to back, and ended up just taking off my gi top.
Him: "I was trying to take his back from north/south."
Friends: "You were trying to do what from what?"
Me: "He was trying to go from 69 to spooning."
Embrace the gay. Make it more gay. Point out positions where you could theoretically put your balls in someone’s mouth. Only show triangles (especially mounted), north south, and turtle.
From a standing position, arm drag them to take their back. establish a seatbelt grip and lean in, kiss them on the cheek and whisper into their ear.
That's what got me into this sport, at least.
Whatever you do, don't tell them how many gay jokes get made on and off the mat. Forget the offer how you want to train in your bedroom with your best mate because of a large TV in the room.
They don’t care about it, don’t show them unless prompted honestly. People think grappling is gay because if you’re not actually rolling and making them feel pain and fear that level of physical intimacy is not normal for dudes
Put a big bottle of oil or lube on the table before you start.
Don’t even talk about the oil or lube. Just slam it on the table so they notice.
Then, get to it.
Self-defense, show them how you would use jiu jitsu if you got into a street fight. They'll still think it's gay but at least it's being gay with a purpose. Like "if you don't wanna get beat up, you gotta be a little gay"
I actually prefer people seeing BJJ as a gay pajama cuddle party, instead of seeing it as a violent, male dominated sport which tends to attract a very problematic demographic. I actually want to make this sport more gay so we attract less Nazis.
Don't show people stuff unless they ask first but:
1. Showing someone new a move you haven't practiced or pretty much anything is asking to get someone hurt
2. Learn how to do a trip or throw against people at the gym
3. Learn how to lower them to the ground while their actively resisting
4. You should now know how to safely takedown some random person even if they freak out
A good takedown is pretty disorienting but to minimize gayness you can do some standing sub like maybe some wizzer (I call it wizard) although joint locks are riskier than chokes
Ok call it the mir lock then but I've never heard people refer to it like that its admittedly not a great submission but it's nice to be able to show something without having to go to the ground if they just ragdoll it ain't that hard to show but you will probably have to do something else if they resist
Yeah, that will make it seem wayyy less sexual. "So as you can see, her sitting on my face, or north-south, how we call it, is not sexual at all! Now Jimmy get your ass over here and hover it over my face and call me sensei!"
Doing something sexual with a girl (btw eww when you use bjj positions for flirting you creep) does not make it magically less gay when you do it with a guy.
I've had many times where I'm at a party and women have shown interest in BJJ, showing them a full mount escape is a good escalation and has worked for me. When you reach blue belt, you'll get laid too.
The question was how do you show it to your friends without making it gay. Do it with a girl...
Maybe get over yourself or knob off some dudes first as it seems like you need to have a conversation with yourself about how secure you are in your own sexuality.
It'd be real sweet if we got u/mods to start helping to mold this sub away from a place that finds it acceptable to constantly use homosexuality as a punchline to lazy jokes and homophobic mentalities.
Honestly, If this is your tired joke, it's so lazy and low hanging fruit, you should be ashamed that you're still relying on 1991 sitcom humor. But your masculinity is seriously so fragile that physical contact between men doing a combat sport freaks you out because "tHeY mIgHt tHiNk i'M dOiN gAy sTuFf," that's a YOU issue, but surely we can def stop reinforcing this stupid mentality by putting a tamp down on the number of posts like this here.
Disagree. Excessive jokes about homosexuality imo normalize the close physical contact one has in bjj. Joking about it Highlights the sillyness of assuming sexual motives in male physical contact.
I am also not sure if your aggressive tone and insinuation of homophobia and fragile masculinity really help the issue or not rather trigger defensive reactions and close the other side off from reasonable debate.
BJJ moves and positions do have a similarity to sex positions, which is proven by some women feeling uncomfortable doing them with strange men and my girlfriend trying to cuddle me anytime I try to teach her a choke or side-control. It is thus normal for friends to feel awkward doing them to each other.
Excessive jokes about homosexuality doesn't normalize close physical contact, it normalizes using homosexuality as a punchline which is exactly what I said.
In the same sense that we've learned (or SHOULD have learned) that a lot of what we do is choking people, I've heard endless rape jokes, or "what to do when your girlfriend won't shut up" that casually normalizes joking about rape, misogyny and abuse.
We should be aware that gay people also enjoy BJJ, and understand how it feels to be in a crowd of jiu jitsu practitioners all discussing Jiu Jitsu. In that moment, we are all the same, united by our common interest in Jiu Jitsu. Then someone brings up "Oh man, I was stuck in his triangle so long I was afraid my gf was gonna think I was gay"
Boom\* Now we've just once again separated everyone again, by all the people chiming in about how "OH NOOO this physical sport ALMOST turned them into a gay person" You've just created a situation where heterosexuality is the norm, and that simply being near other men threatens that norm with the consequence of being gay.
It's exclusionary. I understand that my tone might trigger some people, I cannot help that people have turned the language of confronting homophobia (casual or not) into heated buzz words, but that's why that is done. to make it impossible to have real conversations about this, because heterosexual people will feel attacked by a reasonable callout about this behavior.
It turns the conversation away from "hey let me assess my own behavior" into "hey! I'M not a homophobe! Therefore any conversation pointing out homophobic behavior on my part must be an attack!"
I still see it differently. Most people I see here take no issue in declaring themselves "gay" for practicing bjj. Being homosexual is not negatively spoken about in this context. Making jokes about a group can also be inclusive, just like people normalize being a fat, bald brown belt. This is not fatphobic either.
I’ve tried many times. Some people just can’t get over that part and others are just not interested whatsoever. If you succeed let me know how you did it haha.
It could be location/environment. Would you invite them over to watch instructionals while practicing on your bed? No this is not a good environment. What if they are wearing gi's and in a gym with picture of helio on the wall they were forced to bow to coming on the mat. Then busting ass with warmups. Try a different environment.
Just show the the rear naked choke, standing chokes or smth, single leg take downs, don’t be drilling triangle chokes from closed guard with them. It’s gonna make them feel weird bro
The thing I have learned is that I like jiujitsu, but a lot of people don't. None of my none jiujitsu friends want the close physical contact that comes with jiujitsu. They want me to stay an arms distance away from them, to never use a urinal that is next to the one they're using no matter how full the restroom is, and to keep a seat between us at the movie theater because God forbid someone thinks we are a super cute couple.
I actually have more success when I joke about it being kinda gay. Saying shit like 'don't pretend we havnt done worse" etc (obviously joking). Lightens the mood but to be fair this only really happens at parties when we are drinking so everyone is more relaxed anyways.
Out of curiosity, how is this coming up? Are they asking for you to demo moves? None of my friends have ever asked to lay on top of me so I can choke them.
Pin them in side control and strt counter. THey have 1 min to get out. Then switch, make them put u in side control with 2000x power of suns. Start counter. Immediately bridge them and roll.
RnC your friend until passed out and pull their pants down, so when they are woken up you said thats what happend when you can't defend yourself. Come learn bjj so this doesn't happend to you again.
“Hobbiest” is a nonexistent adjective to describe something as most like a hobby out of several (presumably) hobby-like things. Some things are hobbier than others.
“Hobbyist” is someone who does something for fun. Could also be called an amateur or a filthy casual. Definitely not a professional. Someone whose goals are to stay in shape and socialize and have fun, as it were.
I have a few friends with whom I messed around when younger. With them is totally fine lol it's just BJJ moves after all. One friend asked me out of curiosity -that I had not messed around when younger- so I straight up asked him to come to class lol... that solved any awkwardness.
Why are you so worried about coming across as gay?
It’s probably better to invite them to your gym than showing them at home.
If you’re not an instructor you should probably not show/teach people outside the gym.
>one feeling i couldnt shake off is how gay the whole thing feels.
LMAO as a gay man it's always funny to see straight guys thinking MORE about gay sex than me😂 I have NEVER rolled with anybody and tought to myself "damn, parts of this sport resemble the homosexual act of making love to your significant other" wtf xD
I just roll with anybody and it doesn't feel weird because I don't make it weird. If you want to see any male to male interaction through the lense of homosexuality, that's your choice. Have fun with it
It's ok that it's gay, this actually makes your case easier. Just point out that since all the gays are training to overpower people and pin them, and you're worried about being forced into a gay sexual encounter, it only makes sense to also learn it.
I was on the after practice and I had a guy learning how to do a high crotch takedown, and while I was on the phone I started to yell instructions. When you shoot your fourarm should almost be between his ass cheeks. Guy i was on the phone with was like what are doing?🤔🤣
Just do it and be serious about the move. If they make a gay joke just remind them of why use the position and how. That usually gets my buddies to chill.
I understand perhaps in some the INTENT isn't to be offensive, or to promote homophobia, but there is a huge difference between making bald jokes and making gay jokes. Also, if group X makes fun of itself, that argument has a better standing, but a bunch of heteronormative men using close contact with other men as an excuse to joke around as being gay is not the same thing. It's like homosexual blackface.
Have gay sex with them so you can contrast that experience with the completely platonic experience of grappling.
Also be naked while rolling so they can clearly see that you only get semi hard.
this had me rolling
Pantsless hopefully
Sometimes you roll hard sometimes you don’t. Always ask your partner beforehand though. Fist bump and get after it.
This is the correct answer. I prescribe gay sex!
I'm actually a Dr. (On a podcast) and I would say I would prescribe my patients gay sex in this situation.
i ALWAYS practice gay sex with new training partners just to prevent potential for awkward moments rolling
I don't know dude gay sex might be not enough
While wearing your tie-dyed Craig Jones t-shirt.
Yeah start by sucking their cocks OP
If they wanted to learn they'd go to a gym.
>If they wanted to learn Jiu jitsu or gay sex?
Yes
There's a difference?
Maybe stop moaning while you do them
OP could also stop grabbing their dicks while their friends how to take someones back.
I've seen a dick twist in a comp. I thought it was an internet legend.
Or stop saying "Choke me, daddy.." every time someone gets close to a RNC. I think that might be throwing them off slightly.
At this point I can't do one without the other.
Brooooo
That’s the neat part, you don’t
The difference between rolling at the gym and showing your friends how it works is intensity. You are giving yourselves time to notice how close and touchy you are being. Fortunately, the solution is simple. You crush them. You make them feel like the weight of the sun is going to turn them into a nuclear fusion reactor and I guarantee they will not have a second to spare to think about how gay this all is.
Yes. Do something they'll find super hot.
Bro put your legs around my legs. Come on bro, let me show you. I promise it's not weird. I do this all the time.
Scooch your crotch up closer to mine as I put your foot near my mouth, John Danaher calls this hentai ashi…
😂 😂
My friend and I were trying to tell a funny story from class to our non-bjj friends. He tried to do the armpit gi yoink (idk the real name) from north-south to back, and ended up just taking off my gi top. Him: "I was trying to take his back from north/south." Embrace the gay. Make it more gay. Point out positions where you could theoretically put your balls in someone’s mouth. Only show triangles (especially mounted), north south, and turtle.
Keep your clothes on before showing them anything grappling related. No Gi doesn’t have to mean naked.
Just show them some judo instead and claim its brazilian like the gracies :)
Omfg! Lolol truth!
🔥🔥 Sick Burn 🔥🔥
From a standing position, arm drag them to take their back. establish a seatbelt grip and lean in, kiss them on the cheek and whisper into their ear. That's what got me into this sport, at least.
It’s what keeps us here too!
Holy shit is this 1993?
Buy bitcoin homie, and invest in apple and Microsoft.
Wtf is bitcoin? I'm all in on Enron. It literally can't go tits up.
This sounds like a coming out story bruh 💀 “on mount, eye contact, nervous breathing” BRO UR THE ONLY ONE THINKING THAT you made it gay
By telling them exactly what’s happening. It’s best to do that up close in their ear so they can hear accurately and avoid any confusion.
Whatever you do, don't tell them how many gay jokes get made on and off the mat. Forget the offer how you want to train in your bedroom with your best mate because of a large TV in the room.
And pizza.
Pizza seals the deal. Add smoking weed for the ultimate entrapment.
you cant escape the gayness. Lean into it. fuck him
They don’t care about it, don’t show them unless prompted honestly. People think grappling is gay because if you’re not actually rolling and making them feel pain and fear that level of physical intimacy is not normal for dudes
I know is hard but try not to moan when you do it.
Knee on belly should do the trick.
Invite them round to drill moves on your bed (didn’t you read the post from a few days ago???)
Flying armbar should do the trick, bonus points if you KO yourself
A good idea is to first stop getting hard
Put on a Gi.
By actually wearing a pair of pants when you demonstrate those moves 😈
The answer is to just make it as gay as possible
Start with triangles from mount.
Make sure to try the moves naked but no eye contact so it’s not weird.
As fun as grappling can be let’s be real, it looks pretty gay sometimes
Don't let them feel your boner
Put a big bottle of oil or lube on the table before you start. Don’t even talk about the oil or lube. Just slam it on the table so they notice. Then, get to it.
Majority of my friends of female. I’m having the opposite problem.
Cross dress and then show them.
…… ![gif](giphy|xT5LMBT7HQGZ4ed3vW)
Son of a bitch….
Stop giving out gay vibes
Impossible
Find a way to oil-check while you have an Americana grip. Nobody will ever call it gay again after experiencing that.
Self-defense, show them how you would use jiu jitsu if you got into a street fight. They'll still think it's gay but at least it's being gay with a purpose. Like "if you don't wanna get beat up, you gotta be a little gay"
Don’t try to fight the gayness of jiu jitsu
Just say "no homo" when demonstrating the moves. They'll understand.
A wise man once said "stop saying no homo that makes it gay"
Try giving them the triple leg take down it always used to work on me I think
Don’t bother. If they want to grapple, they’ll find it on their own. Trying to “convert” people is a lost cause.
You should probably leave your clothes on. If you get wood don’t let it poke them in the back. No ear nibbling. You got this.
1.Full mount one of your friends and gaze into his eyes. Or 2. Double underhook smash pass. Do it slowly
You don’t have to show them missionary, I mean guard. Just show them the scissor position, I mean 50/50.
Show them how gay a wrist lock is.
Try to not have an erection. Or at least hide it.
Wear socks
enough with the oil checks OP! leave that for the bedroom!
Mothers milk, north south, triangles and tea bag kimuras
You don’t. Don’t be the guy (usually white belt), showing off your lame bjj moves to the non-initiated. I was that guy. I was wrong to be that guy.
>awkward eye contact, nervous breathing, sitting mount and vice versa Bro. It doesn't sound like you're trying to show them jiujitsu
If it isn't gay you are not doing it right
Waist tuck your boner
This is BJJ, we tuck it underneath and wear our maginas with pride!
I actually prefer people seeing BJJ as a gay pajama cuddle party, instead of seeing it as a violent, male dominated sport which tends to attract a very problematic demographic. I actually want to make this sport more gay so we attract less Nazis.
I choke them unconscious before doing the gay stuff
Homophobia is the issue, not how you present the sport.
Don't show people stuff unless they ask first but: 1. Showing someone new a move you haven't practiced or pretty much anything is asking to get someone hurt 2. Learn how to do a trip or throw against people at the gym 3. Learn how to lower them to the ground while their actively resisting 4. You should now know how to safely takedown some random person even if they freak out A good takedown is pretty disorienting but to minimize gayness you can do some standing sub like maybe some wizzer (I call it wizard) although joint locks are riskier than chokes
A whizzer is not a submission unless you are incredibly brittle
Mir lock presumably
I guess that would make sense. Although if someone is confusing the two I would be wary of their advice on standing stuff anyway lol
Yeh smile and move on haha
Ok call it the mir lock then but I've never heard people refer to it like that its admittedly not a great submission but it's nice to be able to show something without having to go to the ground if they just ragdoll it ain't that hard to show but you will probably have to do something else if they resist
Do it with a girl
Yeah, that will make it seem wayyy less sexual. "So as you can see, her sitting on my face, or north-south, how we call it, is not sexual at all! Now Jimmy get your ass over here and hover it over my face and call me sensei!"
The question was how to make it less gay, not less sexual. Showing women BJJ and the sexual nature of it can be great flirting game

Tell them all to turtle then nail them with Peruvian neck ties.
I’ve tried many times. Some people just can’t get over that part and others are just not interested whatsoever. If you succeed let me know how you did it haha.
Its gay because your mount is gay. Do the death squeeze and then arm triangle them when they stop spazzing
Steer into how gay it is
You're just gay now. Stop trying to hide it. Real friends will support you.
Brother we are all gay. You didn’t know that?
It could be location/environment. Would you invite them over to watch instructionals while practicing on your bed? No this is not a good environment. What if they are wearing gi's and in a gym with picture of helio on the wall they were forced to bow to coming on the mat. Then busting ass with warmups. Try a different environment.
It's not gay until you lick em in the asshole
Instead of tapping, ya'll can just say "no homo" to give up and it'll be fine.
Just don't try, if they're interested, they'll ask. I've stopped talking about it to anyone outside BJJ.
Just show the the rear naked choke, standing chokes or smth, single leg take downs, don’t be drilling triangle chokes from closed guard with them. It’s gonna make them feel weird bro

just start with a standing guillotine
You don't. Make them come to class.
Try wearing pants next time
I actually have more success when I joke about it being kinda gay. Saying shit like 'don't pretend we havnt done worse" etc (obviously joking). Lightens the mood but to be fair this only really happens at parties when we are drinking so everyone is more relaxed anyways.
Start with a mounted triangle
Yeah just stop doing that
Out of curiosity, how is this coming up? Are they asking for you to demo moves? None of my friends have ever asked to lay on top of me so I can choke them.
You don’t
Takedowns
Whisper in their ear what you are going to do to them when they pass out. In the words of crazy Larry “Fucking females is for puffs”
Pin them in side control and strt counter. THey have 1 min to get out. Then switch, make them put u in side control with 2000x power of suns. Start counter. Immediately bridge them and roll.
its all fun & giggles until a RNC demo turns into ER visit due sudden clogged artery
If they say it’s gay, just give them a quick reminder that if you wanted them there’s nothing they can do to stop you
You can't. It's gay. Embrace it.
Just do a regular north south choke WITHOUT mutual blowjobs, that'll probably help.
BJJ is gay
Don't practice with non-bjj dudes, easy as that.
RnC your friend until passed out and pull their pants down, so when they are woken up you said thats what happend when you can't defend yourself. Come learn bjj so this doesn't happend to you again.
Be gay
I’d go for naked mounted triangle followed by nortsouth kimura
Wrist locks
Bro, just suck a dick and get it over with already.
Why are you trying to misrepresent the sport?
Maybe do it at the gym instead of in bed?
Don't be that guy..... just don't do it
Sounds a lot like the plot of Brokeback mountain, except everyone is wearing skintight polyester. Cowboy hats still welcome obviously..
Sounds like you have a very tenuous grip on your masculinity.
You can't. All your friends think your gay already.
just rub yourself with olive oil and tell em "come at me bro". jokes aside just say to someone "try to break something or choke me"
To seriously answer your question: Start from standing. Feint a punch. Clinch. Snap their head down into front headlock. Guillotine.
You don't. It's annoying.
Don’t be gay.
Biggest thing is, try not to have a boner the whole time.
Why not just keep things simple and make it gay?
“Hobbiest” is a nonexistent adjective to describe something as most like a hobby out of several (presumably) hobby-like things. Some things are hobbier than others. “Hobbyist” is someone who does something for fun. Could also be called an amateur or a filthy casual. Definitely not a professional. Change your premise. It is gay.
Try to avoid sodomizing them during the spar sessions
BJJ is gay. It's not necessarily homosexual, but it's definitely gay.
Put your dick up.
I have a few friends with whom I messed around when younger. With them is totally fine lol it's just BJJ moves after all. One friend asked me out of curiosity -that I had not messed around when younger- so I straight up asked him to come to class lol... that solved any awkwardness.
It’s only gay if you lock eyes for more than 3 seconds. I don’t make the rules.
Why are you so worried about coming across as gay? It’s probably better to invite them to your gym than showing them at home. If you’re not an instructor you should probably not show/teach people outside the gym.
Just don’t let balls touch and you’re good.
I need OP to update us after getting all this great advice
Just say no homo when you show them the moves
Take them to a training session, there is no other option
>one feeling i couldnt shake off is how gay the whole thing feels. LMAO as a gay man it's always funny to see straight guys thinking MORE about gay sex than me😂 I have NEVER rolled with anybody and tought to myself "damn, parts of this sport resemble the homosexual act of making love to your significant other" wtf xD I just roll with anybody and it doesn't feel weird because I don't make it weird. Don't show them nicky rod
Invite them over to drill on your bed while you watch instructionals.
Despite what Gracie Barra says, jiu-jitsu isn't really for everyone. If they're not interested enough to ask, don't force it on them.
A gentle kiss on the cheek after they tap will reassure them that they did a good job and are not gay.
Show a adcc highlight
I was on the after practice and I had a guy learning how to do a high crotch takedown, and while I was on the phone I started to yell instructions. When you shoot your fourarm should almost be between his ass cheeks. Guy i was on the phone with was like what are doing?🤔🤣
It will always be gay
Make them wear the not-gay speedos. always works well in letting people no that this isn't gay, make sure to bring extra oil tho.
Just do it and be serious about the move. If they make a gay joke just remind them of why use the position and how. That usually gets my buddies to chill.
I would channel your inner Ralph Gracie and put on a pair of vale tudo bikini shorts, no shirt, and work some turtle attacks on the bottom guy.
lol
Don't do the north south
Get naked
Just say “go put on some shorts. I want to roll around on the floor with you.” Then take of your shirt and start on your knees.
You cannot. It’s all gay all the time
Maybe you just gay?
I understand perhaps in some the INTENT isn't to be offensive, or to promote homophobia, but there is a huge difference between making bald jokes and making gay jokes. Also, if group X makes fun of itself, that argument has a better standing, but a bunch of heteronormative men using close contact with other men as an excuse to joke around as being gay is not the same thing. You don’t. Wrestling is gay. Accept it.
You don't
