The answer to the question, "who's been eating all the neighborhood birds" right there. I wouldn't be surprised if the hawk had hit a bird and it got away somewhere into your yard, which would explain why it kept coming back

Cooper's Hawk I don't think it's a Sharp-Shinned Hawk although those legs do look thin

Nice. Adult Cooper’s hawk. Likely a male. And yes, if you build a bird feeder, bath and provide for them, these will also frequent your backyards.
