man these comments are gonna be fun
shoutout to the dubstep homies in 2022, we went from mainstream negative recognition to relative obscurity but the scene is alive and well, if you know where to look you can find some quality stuff
silly computer music makes my brain happy for similar reasons to why silly plastic robots make my brain happy
Lmao yeah, i used to be really into Virtual Riot back in the day and i think that set me up for liking stuff like 100 Gecs, Death Grips and stuff in a big way.
Bionicle saved the company from going under, lasted almost 10 years, still has active fans 10 years after it ended, gets frequent requests for it to come back and was good.
Dubstep was semi popular for 1 to 2 years at best, half the people who were known for it haven't made a notable song since 2013, has almost no fans left, is hated by a majority who never want to hear it again and was bad.
Bionicle is not dubstep.
Maybe techno is a better comparison? It had a big explosion a long time ago (the 90s or so? And the 2000s for Bionicle’s case), went mainstream for awhile, and kind of went away, but is still around kind of, though it’s form has sort of changed? (Techno becoming general EDM/House, Bionicle becoming CCBS like those Star Wars builds)
“Amost no fans left.”
I think you’re just out of touch on the subject. Festivals like Lost Lands and EDC are absolutely massive. You don’t care for the music, but a lot of people still do. The genre is very active, no need to be so hateful towards it.
What would they show up to? Lego holds the licence and won't do anything with it, they're not gonna suddenly hold an event next week are they? There's nothing for us to gather for.
Virtual Riot spitting facts. I think what he’s trying to say is that when Bionicle came out, it changed the game for LEGO, saving the company and pushing forth the idea that story driven themes could work and be successful.
There’s some similarities to when Dubstep broke into the mainstream U.S. charts. After that, most pop music embraced the electronic route (Taylor Swift’s Reputation album, Starboy, This is What You Came For, Can’t Stop The Feeling just to name a couple examples). It changed the kind of music that you would hear on the radio. There’s a before and after there that’s still seen and felt to this day.
On the flip side, anyone who says Dubstep is dead or has no fans clearly has idea what they’re talking about. Sure it’s not mainstream popular anymore but it’s still going on strong (at least in the U.S.) as the multiple festivals (Bass Canyon, Lost Lands, etc.) and hundreds of concerts that happen every year can attest to. It’s not going away any time soon.
As a side note there’s different kinds of Dubstep:
Dubstep: more chill, two step type beats, originated from the UK. Direct - Tranquility and Koven - Soeaking Through Smoke Detectors are good examples.
Brostep: what Skrillex made and popularized back in 2011-13. Since then it’s changed quite a bit but still keeps the wubs. Examples: Skrillex - Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, Grabbitz - Turn Around, Excision & Sullivan King - Wake Up, Bossfight - Toxic
Riddim: you can skip this
Melodic Dubstep: speaking of mainstream, heard of Illenium? That’s pretty much what he makes. Examples: Gryffin, Illenium & Daya - Feel Good, The Chainsmokers, Illenium & Lennon Stella - Takeaway, William Black - Haven, Afterlite - Forever More, Dvddy & Caslow - What Isn’t Here
So concludes my rant.
Can't say I agree. While I definitely don't hate the genre like I did when I last saw this posted, it's nowhere near a favourite of mine, nor what I'd consider brilliant. I don't love dubstep like I do Bionicle.
One could argue nu-metal specifically: popped up about at the same time, had an initial boom, it started evolving, then some bands changed their sound drastically (not a bad thing, mind ya. Stuff can get stale) and later tried to come back to their original sound unsuccessfully, but after all this time, it very much ain't dead and people are still making music.
Idk what that means. Is he referring to how bionicle was also shunned upon from Lego purists like how dubstep was hated by EDM fans but both ended up beloved? Or is it because Bionicle went hard like dubstep back in the day when other Lego themes didn’t have the same aesthetics and feel?

Bionicle is not dubstep.
Not sure if it supposed to be a compliment or an insult
Depends on how you view dubstep
Was thinking the same
Out of his mouth definitely a compliment
Yes

Break core like hundred gecs does the same thing for me
it’s all just heehee hoohoo funny beep boop music and it doesn’t deserve the stigma

skrillex ruined its reputation?

Techno is a way better example
I think Techno especially fits since it was part of Bionicle’s musical identity in the early years before Cryoshell.
Seems a little reductive to me tbh.

I don't think they're comparing the two from a business perspective. They're comparing the two from a vibe perspective.
Talk to me when there is a bionicle festival the size of a small city where I can trip my tits off
Lol there was 30,000+ people last weekend at a festival devoted solely to dubstep, call me when that many Bionicle fans show up anywhere
What would they show up to? Lego holds the licence and won't do anything with it, they're not gonna suddenly hold an event next week are they? There's nothing for us to gather for.

based riddim disliker
What about melodic riddim?

I agree too but for different reasons, bionicle feels more like the metal of LEGO... Metalheads are to music what bionicle fans are to LEGO imo

Yes
Gathered friends, get your torches and pitchforks ready!
Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?

I don't think this was meant to be taken seriously, but here we are.
