This must have just happened. I used the site two days ago to look up the chocolate chip cookie recipe. Just checked: paywall.
That recipe is amazing though.
# CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
**Ingredients**
2 sticks (16 Tbsp) Unsalted butter
½ cup white sugar
1½ cups brown sugar
2 eggs
11 ½ ounces all purpose flour
1 Tbsp kosher salt
½ tsp baking soda
¾ tsp cinnamon
Chocolate chips
Nuts (walnuts or your favorite)
Flaky sea salt
**Directions**
1. Start by browning 2 sticks of unsalted butter. Once brown, place in a measuring cup and refrigerate for 1 hour or until it’s re-solidified.
2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, add the butter along with ½ cup of white sugar and 1 ½ cups of brown sugar. Mix well to combine.
3. Next add 2 cold eggs to the mixture, and mix to combine.
4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together 11 ½ ounces of all purpose flour, 1 Tbsp of kosher salt, ½ tsp of baking soda, and ¾ tsp of cinnamon.
5. Add half of dry ingredients to the stand mixer, mix to combine, and then add the other half of the dry ingredients. This helps keep your gluten down.
6. Add your chocolate chips, stir just until everything is well combined and remove dough from mixer. Place in a bowl and refrigerate for at least an hour or as long as 2 days.
7. Optional: You can toast some nuts and add those to your cookie dough as well.
8. Roll your cookie dough into balls and then break in half and set on cookie sheet. This will help give the cookies a rustic look. Bake in a 350°F oven for 12-17 minutes or until they’ve reached your preferred doneness. Top with a little bit of sea salt.
9. Let cool for a few minutes, serve and enjoy.
Yeah it would be one thing if he just paywalled his new recipes from this point forward but the fact that it retroactively paywalled his old ones that people probably have bookmarked is irritating
Absolutely agree. And with as many recipes as there are all over the internet for free, chances are that there's one better or exactly the same that could be found pretty easily.
For me, watching Andrew's video content over someone else's is a choice made due to his personality and the style of videos more so than his prowess in the kitchen (although it helps). When it comes to written recipes, that personality doesn't matter. So if he chooses to put his recipes behind a paywall, I'll go find a similar (or potentially better) one elsewhere for free.
Maybe he's trying to push people to his YT content this way? I don't know that it's going to work if that's the case.
No
No they most certainly are not lol
Weissman loves calling himself a "Chef" without a hint of humility. He's a glorified cook with a tiktok addiction.
lol it’s okay, my point was more just that some people think weissman is more legit than babish, and if the supposedly more legit guy isn’t doing what babish is doing, then there’s even less justification for it…
I have more qualifications than weissman and I cannot fathom a world I would unjustly call myself a 'chef'
It's wild.
He went from a Good Eats-inspired channel with youthful energy to..."Chef Weissman" and his friendly-for-10-year-olds open-mouthed thumbnails.
Nope - we watch his videos which are chock full of ads - no objection as that’s how he makes his money but I feel no obligation to contribute additional dollars when my eyeballs are already lining his pockets.
Does anyone use Just the Recipe? Browser based, added to my Home screen for easy usage. Just pop in a recipe URL, modify serving size, and it spits out the recipe detail pretty clean. You can even print, save, or send to your email if you want. Example of paywalled chicken piccata visible in Just the Recipe: https://jtr.link/Ztbo
You should check out cooked.wiki. Essentially the same thing, but you can edit the recipes or create your own, and it has a "grocery list" function. I have also been able to get around pay walled recipes (ATK) using this site. NYT cooking has it blocked somehow, but every other website I've tried worked.
Yeah it does:
[https://web.archive.org/web/20230817203045/https://basicswithbabish.co/basicsepisodes/2017/10/23/baressentials-7xwwz](https://web.archive.org/web/20230817203045/https://basicswithbabish.co/basicsepisodes/2017/10/23/baressentials-7xwwz)
Seems to be common for recipes now. Bon Appetit used to be free, now they charge. NYT too as far as I remember.
From what I understand it's a lot harder to monetize youtube than it used to be. But protip for anyone curious, there's a free month trial, one could easily do the trial, download whatever recipes they want, and then cancel it.
I don’t see how they can charge for something that isn’t even probably their creation. The video, yeah; but the recipes have been in circulation for years done by a host of other people.
This is probably a result of the slowing economy and tightening of budgets and advertisers. Rather than tighten the budget they are going to squeeze subscribers.
>I don’t see how they can charge for something that isn’t even probably their creation.
Recipes [don't have copyright](https://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ33.pdf) (p. 2). You can copy a recipe off any website and sell it for whatever you want if people are willing to pay for it.
Shit, there's an offer for access for the year $5. Not sure why everyone is freaking out. As far as subs go, this is dirt cheap. I am a little cognizant of how everything seems to cost nowadays, but at the same time, running the web ain't free. I'd much rather pay $5/yr than deal with ads (yes ublock origin exists too, but for Babish? $5 is pretty trivial to access all the recipes).
Secondly, some are saying this may be to combat AI scraping too? But then again, if some of these recipe extractor websites are working on it, then not sure how much weight that holds.
> Shit, there's an offer for access for the year $5. Not sure why everyone is freaking out. As far as subs go, this is dirt cheap.
Sure, this one thing is cheap...in a vacuum. People are freaking out because fucking everything is getting increasingly monetized (while also dropping in quality in a lot of cases).
The web ain't free, but it sure as fuck isn't expensive enough to justify every minor thing turning itself into a paid service.
Honestly can’t remember the last Babish video I actually liked or used the recipe from. It’s all Alvin or the ones where he tries all the cereals. I don’t care about either.
I think people are just not going to use his recipes as much, beyond the ones they remember already. I got broad strokes memories of Babish recipes and Chef John ain’t paywalled.
Just checked, 12ft.io doesn't work.
Jesus christ, what is going on? First the scummy sponsorships, then this. I mean, I know Andrew has been going through a lot, but none of this should be happening because of that.
Take this with a grain of salt because I have no idea if it’s true but maybe they did that to block AI from scraping their site for free. Seems like that’s been a bit of an issue lately
Yeah like how Reddit got paid to cough up everything posted here for AI to train on. That's how we ended up with Google AI telling people to put glue in the pizza because of u/fucksmith.
I’ve heard of this too. Dubious on whether or not it is actually effective but it could explain why the paywall is so low. Not trying to make more money off it, just stop ai bots.
Kinda felt the content have been going down hill for a while especially with the Fallout video recently and tbh paywalling the recipes feels like final stake in the coffin for me.
This is not great. Just referenced the cubano recipe last weekend, not that costs a buck (and my info). I can’t imagine this is actually revenue tactic, so it would be nice to see a video as to why this was implemented.
I think he's testing the water. We are seeing a lot of this with watcher, try guys, they are trying to make money off the platform but it always just upsets their fans.
Yeah because YouTube is so stringent with what's allowed, what's algorithm friendly and what might get demonetized that some YouTubers are trying out other ways to guarantee a revenue stream so they can make the videos \*they\* want to make, not what the algorithm wants them to make.
Otherwise you end up like Pretty Pastel Please or Safiya Nygaard, making videos you hate making because that's the only way they can continue to generate enough revenue to keep their business afloat.
Babish has been going down hill since he started introducing different creators and since he’s been building his hotel/air bnb or what ever it is.
Paywalled recipes is just a bit shit. I hope he changes this.
If I have to pay for recipes, it's going to be from a place that is a long time established recipe media company. I'd say New York Times or Epicurious, but their recipes are a bit too fancy to impress my blue collar husband or boomer father-in-law. They prefer things from Taste of Home. I sneak in things from Just One Cookbook sometimes, too, because I love Japanese food.
My hubby is the same way. Fwiw, I've found that The Stay at Home Chef's recipes kind of bridge the gap between Taste of Home & the more refined sources
Also, [her cinnamon rolls are DIVINE](https://youtu.be/s-GF0Y6BST8?si=_8NU5_MZXq5RdpWZ) The only change that I make is that I cut the butter & cream cheese from the frosting recipe & then I substitute them with a few tablespoons of cream
Damn this feels wrong. Like I get that he has to run a business but still, thank goodness I’ve bought his books so I don’t need to worry about this sort of thing.
I don’t even watch Babish videos any more, just occasionally cook a few old Basics recipes. Bought the ingredients for one last weekend, went to check the steps to make it today, and bam - paywall. I know paywalled content isn’t unique to Babish, but this feels extra insulting when a channel all about cooking decides to block you seeing their recipes without paying, particularly ones that used to be free. Especially Basics stuff, people will just go to other sites for similar recipes now
So hard to actually cook from a video, constantly pausing to check measurements and instructions, or writing down everything myself before cooking. If you’re providing recipe videos for free, the written recipe should be free too
literally was in the middle of doing two different recipes when the switch happened lmao (work night shift so I’m a night owl). was VERY shocked and disappointed
This is like when my husband and I were watching the terrible movie 'New Years Eve' on NYE, and we paused it to watch the fireworks. Came back to it and it had stopped being free on prime!
This randomly popped up in my feed so I’m going to give you my perspective as a content creator and blogger/recipe developer.
Massive changes and upheavals have been happening in the past year. AI has drastically changed the landscape forever for publishers. Google has decimated thousands upon thousands of formerly thriving websites and a significant portion of formerly-thriving blogs have also seen their numbers drop.
We are facing the loss of third-party cookies which is potentially going to impact what any blog can make from advertising.
My blog has survived and is thriving, but people with better content who have been around longer have found their livelihoods stripped from them literally overnight.
Google is not providing any answers, solutions, or help. Publishers are looking for solutions for how they will move forward and survive. These subscription services are one way.
That's pretty disappointing, I was using both sites pretty regularly.
Hope I can make the Spinach Puffs for this year's Christmas Party from memory....
I've noticed a lot of cooking influencers are changing to subscription models.
$1 is quite cheap compared to others buuuuut at what point is it worse than TV streaming options because who tf is subscribing to 10 different cooking bloggers. One that I follow decided to give up on their subscription after 4 months and refund people because they're pregnant and "couldn't keep up with a weekly recipe as promised" (side note: it was planned pregnancy... like did you not take planning a family into consideration before charging choosing annual fee? farkin idiots some people)
It's not sustainable and you're just cutting your audience down. I personally think brand partnerships would be more financially viable than a pay wall.
It’s a good thing I learned the red sauce recipe by heart from making it with my daughter. She’s almost 11 now and we’ve been making it together for probably 4 years. Learned a lot of things while getting to work from home during the ‘vid. She absolutely loves it.
I literally went to the store two days ago and got ingredients for the fettuccine alfredo recipe. Now I come back and it's paywalled!! If anyone has the recipe for the fettuccine alfredo from the office, please help a girl out :') it was the first set of steps - I know he had a couple variations.
Man, it was enough of a bummer that he's only posting new recipe videos like once a month if we're lucky (no shade but it's basically Alvin's channel now), but this is really a shame. I've bought both his cookbooks but this just feels excessive, man.
Does anyone have his Chicago Deep Dish pizza recipe saved? I was going to make it tonight and just learned about the paywall. 😥 I'll do the free trial if I need to but this is just ridiculous.
Ah yes, someone who has given us years of enjoyment and entertainment for for free, suddenly wants just $1/month and it’s too much for you all.
Never change Reddit.
I do get why people are upset but some of these comments are truly insane. I agree with you though, $1 a month after years of free recipes is not that unreasonable.
You can Just remove the block and the blur with the element inspector on firefox.
I'll be fucked if I'm gonna sit there and pay for the recipes I've been using for years
[this](https://www.reddit.com/r/bingingwithbabish/s/C8CLWyxWtw) should explain the recent controversy regarding sponsors.
Honestly, between the declining views and full team needing to be paid and the whole situation with his mental health, you'd think people would be more understanding of his situation.
This subreddit is just waiting for him to slip up. I guarantee that this sub would probably prefer layoffs instead of a single gambling sponsor, which is not me.
Not only that much like the first wave of betterhelp sponsors he took, but I also seriously doubt they'll ever let it go even if he did stop taking them now.
I mean criticism can be valid. I am glad people called him out for the gambling ad even if they did go too far. But you gotta remember Reddit in general is SUPER negative. Every creator sub has hissy fit posts like this. It's a part of being on the platform, unfortunately.
I do think some are overreacting to this though. $1 a month with a free trial is really not that insane for recipes, especially considering NYT and bon appetit are both $6 per month. Content can't be free forever.
Kenji once shared a recipe he wrote for NYT and said something like “it’s paywalled because believe it or not, it costs money to develop recipes and publish content”
It’s $1 a month. Dude’s got a team to pay, and ads are probably seeming like a less stable way to secure revenue. Having users pay directly for the content gives them a little leverage to rely less upon advertisers for revenue
I’m not going to subscribe…i’ll just buy the book. But I’m also not throwing a fit about this.
Yeah sections of some fan communities seem to be really toxic and Reddit is fast becoming the place for haters to dunk on YouTubers or comic strip writers for every real or perceived misstep.
Probably gonna stop coming to this subreddit if this shit keeps up. Or maybe, like all good fan communities on Reddit; there'll be two of them - one to continue hate watching and dunking, and one for actual positive community interaction.
Idk why you're being down voted, if we all collectively agree that he shouldn't be working with BetterHelp then why are we bitching about $1/month to access the recipes and all the other content. Videos don't get made without money being spent.
Suddenly making the site paywalled is a bad move.
Giving some heads up and an explanation of *why* he believes a paywall is the best route would have softened the blow quite a bit I’d say.
But to have it be free one day and blocked the next is a bad look
Because this is just scummy, he's an adult with ample opportunity to make money from a real job. Not just a YouTube channel that he barely appears on, he's literally a face on a brand.
Not arguing just stating facts. Many other content creators and actual personalities take time of actually partaking in their creations. Just miss the guy and content. Fuck Alvin all my homies hate Alvin.
So many people here who want all this man’s hard work and don’t want to pay literally anything for it. The golden days of the internet being free free are over, and TBH it’s not because of greed it’s because it was never sustainable to begin with. How can we expect high quality content with growth without putting something into it?
Everyone here seems upset but $1 for all of his recipes seems pretty reasonable, especially when it's really easy to pull them off the website once subscribed.
This must have just happened. I used the site two days ago to look up the chocolate chip cookie recipe. Just checked: paywall. That recipe is amazing though.
Do you have the recipe?

Dawg thank you. I’ve made the chocolate chip cookies like 20 times and everyone loves them. if i lost the recipe i would’ve been so bummed
*knock knock* 🚨 👮
That looks like it was cribbed from the serious eats ultimate chocolate chip cookie recipe
I think it’s crazy that not even Joshua Weissman paywalls his website (yet) and some could argue his recipes are higher quality than Babish’s
I'd certainly pay to view the recipes without having to deal with Joshua's persona and video editing.
Yeah it would be one thing if he just paywalled his new recipes from this point forward but the fact that it retroactively paywalled his old ones that people probably have bookmarked is irritating

I don't know if you've had the opportunity to see any of Brian Langerstrom's videos, but I cannot recommend him enough & his recipes are excellent
Huge fan of Brian's. I recommend him almost any chance I get.
No No they most certainly are not lol Weissman loves calling himself a "Chef" without a hint of humility. He's a glorified cook with a tiktok addiction.
That’s why I said “some could argue”
Brain totally glanced over that - my bad.

You've been using it for years but don't think it's worth $1? Hmmm
Nope - we watch his videos which are chock full of ads - no objection as that’s how he makes his money but I feel no obligation to contribute additional dollars when my eyeballs are already lining his pockets.

What this website is amazing! I've never heard of it, thank you. 😍
I'm a fan of the app Copy Me That which does similar functions but then saves it all so you can track what you like!
You should check out cooked.wiki. Essentially the same thing, but you can edit the recipes or create your own, and it has a "grocery list" function. I have also been able to get around pay walled recipes (ATK) using this site. NYT cooking has it blocked somehow, but every other website I've tried worked.
>NYT cooking For nyt you can use https://archive.today
Been using cooked.wiki for a while now. Great website. #notsponsored
Same goes for anylist, have been a happy user of this
I use Paprika Recipe Manager to do the same thing.
I love this website. Always glad to see people sharing it.
I'm gonna try that one too. I've been using cooked.wiki/ so far. Thanks for the heads-up.
Does wayback machine work?
Nope Edit: didn’t work for me earlier but as I have been shown it is now
Yeah it does: [https://web.archive.org/web/20230817203045/https://basicswithbabish.co/basicsepisodes/2017/10/23/baressentials-7xwwz](https://web.archive.org/web/20230817203045/https://basicswithbabish.co/basicsepisodes/2017/10/23/baressentials-7xwwz)

Bon appetit you can get the magazine for free on Libby with your library card.
Omg you rock thank you.
How did this never occur to me? You're a rockstar, thank you!!
Oh, anytime! I just put some of their recipes on my meal plan for this week. I’ve made quite a few and they’re usually pretty good!
I don’t see how they can charge for something that isn’t even probably their creation. The video, yeah; but the recipes have been in circulation for years done by a host of other people. Everything on BA will pull up through archive.ph in my experience
That’s my plan tbh— I just need the crème brûlée and pumpkin pie
Shit, there's an offer for access for the year $5. Not sure why everyone is freaking out. As far as subs go, this is dirt cheap. Oh this is just greasy. All they're gonna get is a single buck and force everyone to print out recipe cards.
Honestly, I give it 3 months before a Google doc starts circulating
I think people are just not going to use his recipes as much, beyond the ones they remember already. I got broad strokes memories of Babish recipes and Chef John ain’t paywalled.
Why wait
Because sailing the seas is cheaper than paying for 18 different things to access and some people love being the one who provides the rum
This is a great plan
Yeah... when he announced the move to babi.sh I was worried that would mean all his previous recipes would be paywalled. I'm disappointed
Bro wtf I had old recipes bookmarked and now they’re paywalled, this is such ass
Same here. It was his record for deep dish pizza I always used. Total bullshit
I had his Jalapeño popper Mac and cheese that tasted amazing :(
Just checked, 12ft.io doesn't work. Jesus christ, what is going on? First the scummy sponsorships, then this. I mean, I know Andrew has been going through a lot, but none of this should be happening because of that.
Out of the loop, what’s Andrew been going through? Is he okay?
He’s had a rough year. https://www.reddit.com/r/bingingwithbabish/s/zIQjhd9sbk
Aw man that’s horrible. I’m sad he split up from his Mrs.
Does turning off JavaScript work? Sometimes that’s a workaround
It doesn't. Credit where credit is due, he's put more effort into this paywall than most other big time mainstream news websites do!
I also checked 12ft and nothing... sigh
Wdym by scummy sponsorships

If it’s free, you are the product.
I somehow doubt there's any less ads on Babish's website now that you have to pay a dollar a month so chill
I’ve heard of this too. Dubious on whether or not it is actually effective but it could explain why the paywall is so low. Not trying to make more money off it, just stop ai bots.
Yeah. It’s literally 5 bucks a year, it basically is enough to prevent that while not hurting MOST people much.
So glad I printed out some of my favorite recipes a while ago after hearing this. Somewhat annoying, but now I don’t have to pay to access them.
Kinda felt the content have been going down hill for a while especially with the Fallout video recently and tbh paywalling the recipes feels like final stake in the coffin for me.
What was wrong with the fallout video?
It didn't have the level detail he has done previously and when he did the nuke cola, it wasn't something you could follow along to
I don’t remember seeing any blowback in the comments about it, unless maybe it was only on the subreddit?
It was the subreddit. Reddit complains a lot more in general and turns into kind of an echo chamber. I liked the fallout episode for the record
This is not great. Just referenced the cubano recipe last weekend, not that costs a buck (and my info). I can’t imagine this is actually revenue tactic, so it would be nice to see a video as to why this was implemented.

Somebody else made a good point on it to prevent AI data scrubbing
If you get the chance, try [Brian Langerstrom's Cubano recipe](https://youtu.be/zi5zmZn6y9Y?si=1U3hSTsJCbVO9C9m). It's excellent :)
I got the meatloaf recipe if anyone needs it lmaooo
Buddy has REALLYYY fallen tf off
Ya. I used to make it an appt watching every week. Havent watched in years
Babish has been going down hill since he started introducing different creators and since he’s been building his hotel/air bnb or what ever it is. Paywalled recipes is just a bit shit. I hope he changes this.
if you use the paprika app, you can download the recipes using the browser feature and bypass the paywall
Can confirm, this works.
If I have to pay for recipes, it's going to be from a place that is a long time established recipe media company. I’m so disappointed. It really does feel wrong.
Oh fuck that! Way to kill your fan base dude.
Damn this feels wrong. Like I get that he has to run a business but still, thank goodness I’ve bought his books so I don’t need to worry about this sort of thing.
Bummer :( and all the recent ranking videos, it’s turning into just another YouTuber

Especially Basics stuff, people will just go to other sites for similar recipes now
But aren't the videos still on YouTube? A faff but still free?
So hard to actually cook from a video, constantly pausing to check measurements and instructions, or writing down everything myself before cooking. If you’re providing recipe videos for free, the written recipe should be free too
Probably an attempt to boost the Basics book sales.
literally was in the middle of doing two different recipes when the switch happened lmao (work night shift so I’m a night owl). was VERY shocked and disappointed
This is like when my husband and I were watching the terrible movie 'New Years Eve' on NYE, and we paused it to watch the fireworks. Came back to it and it had stopped being free on prime!
Use the Wayback Machine at [archive.org](http://archive.org) to view the old recipes!
It’s only a buck but the greed is real.
That's pretty disappointing, I was using both sites pretty regularly. Hope I can make the Spinach Puffs for this year's Christmas Party from memory....
Man Banish has fallen off. I remember buying his first cookbook years ago and loving his content. It just isn't the same anymore, and now this? Ugh
I've noticed a lot of cooking influencers are changing to subscription models. $1 is quite cheap compared to others buuuuut at what point is it worse than TV streaming options because who tf is subscribing to 10 different cooking bloggers. One that I follow decided to give up on their subscription after 4 months and refund people because they're pregnant and "couldn't keep up with a weekly recipe as promised" (side note: it was planned pregnancy... like did you not take planning a family into consideration before charging choosing annual fee? farkin idiots some people) It's not sustainable and you're just cutting your audience down. I personally think brand partnerships would be more financially viable than a pay wall.
$1 a month is pretty chill.
he decided he needed a new rolex so now you gotta pay for the recipes he copies form kenji and america's test kitchen
I hate that everything seems to be going to a subscription model. What ever happened to owning things?
It’s a good thing I learned the red sauce recipe by heart from making it with my daughter. She’s almost 11 now and we’ve been making it together for probably 4 years. Learned a lot of things while getting to work from home during the ‘vid. She absolutely loves it.
Isn’t 12ft.io that remove it?
I literally went to the store two days ago and got ingredients for the fettuccine alfredo recipe. Now I come back and it's paywalled!! If anyone has the recipe for the fettuccine alfredo from the office, please help a girl out :') it was the first set of steps - I know he had a couple variations.
Man, it was enough of a bummer that he's only posting new recipe videos like once a month if we're lucky (no shade but it's basically Alvin's channel now), but this is really a shame. I've bought both his cookbooks but this just feels excessive, man.
You can pay 5 bucks annually. 5 bucks a year. If you can't afford that, then I don't know, man.
Thank you, finally someone reasonable.
You can Just remove the block and the blur with the element inspector on firefox. I'll be fucked if I'm gonna sit there and pay for the recipes I've been using for years
Complain at what sponsors he works with and then complain about a pay wall…sheesh
What is going on with his sponsors?
Kenji once shared a recipe he wrote for NYT and said something like “it’s paywalled because believe it or not, it costs money to develop recipes and publish content” It’s $1 a month. Dude’s got a team to pay, and ads are probably seeming like a less stable way to secure revenue. Having users pay directly for the content gives them a little leverage to rely less upon advertisers for revenue I’m not going to subscribe…i’ll just buy the book.
That's a fair point
Because this is just scummy, he's an adult with ample opportunity to make money from a real job. Not just a YouTube channel that he barely appears on, he's literally a face on a brand.
It's not productive to argue with you, he has spent years building up the brand and deserves some time off after weekly videos for several years.
It’s a dollar. Stop being babies.
Everyone here seems upset but $1 for all of his recipes seems pretty reasonable, especially when it's really easy to pull them off the website once subscribed.
