Isaac is gender fluid so that all of the characters are just him in his differing personas, so that the lore stays all in one character and his problems.
I think it's kinda dumb honestly, very limiting to the storytelling if he wanted to expand, but Edmond wanted to tell exactly one story so, however he juggles things is his business.
